Phantom restarts

My mac pro has recently started re-booting itself when I am away from it for a few hours or so. It's a random action and the error mesage says : "Your computer has restarted because of a problem."
I have a 2012 mac pro running 10.9.2. Below is the error log. Would someone kindly take a  look at the log and let me know if there that would be causing this?
Thanks

Phantom restarts / crashes with Maverick. Under restore Disk Utility, disk can't be repaired says "live system repair is not supported" Is there a fix yet? Or is Maverick "FREE" because Apple no longer offers free phone support?

Get onto the integrated iOS + Mac OS and end support for "legacy" Mac 10.8 and earlier.
Force older hardware users like me to upgrade to new hardware which is where $$ are.
Make apps work across tablets, phone, and computer with similar (though not the "same" app, but able to read and use the same file format).
    Simplify.
I don't think anyone incl. Microsoft knew Windows 8.1 was going to be a free upgrade, I didn't and read that it would be more like $30.
No OS is ready for everyone on the day it is launched. iOS 7 is now 7.04 and climbing, Mac OS tends to really not be ready until the last patch and version is out, often a year or more after it was first issued. Ship it, then plan to fix the bugs left in or that surface.
www.macperformanceguide.com is saying "No" to Maverick for now. Of course there will be no "No" on new Mac Pro 2013 6,1 when those ship (Late Jan? )

  • Strange phantom restarts on MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR

Just wanted to see if I could get opinions on this. My MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR mobo runs real nice now, but still, on occasion, very rare and intermittently, it will just restart. Not likely a heat issue, as the temps are nice and low. Also, not just happenning when I'm playing a game or anything strenuous. Did it once while checking email, once during install of an MS Office program, and once during a game. Could it be my old Gforce 2 MX 200 video card, as the picture sometimes gets wavy (like fine waves on an ocean), and the old computer it was in did similar things, or is it common with this mobo.
    MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR
    Athlon XP 2500+ Barton
1026 MB Kingston DDR RAM (2x512 Dual)
    Gforce 2 MX 200 AGP 4x
    WD 60 GB 7200 RPM

I had errors on test 4 not 5 with Winbond 2-512 Dual Channel called Hardcore Cooling and they said that getting errors with memtest86 may not mean that the ram is defective, it may not be compatible with the memory comtrol and they had me RMA it back. I also was not able to run the ram stable at there advertized rate of 6 2 2 2 it was only stable at 8 3 3 2.5
I replaced it with OCZ after talking to there Tech support people about compatiblety problems with the Nvidia chipset. Sense I installed the OCZ I only had one ram reboot and when I checked I was running the voltage at 2.5 and OCZ said that I should be running at 2.6. They also said that I could run it up to 2.8 with no worry.
Look on manufactor web site to see what ram timing yours should be running at and what voltage, Auto setting in Bios is not always the best setting.
If it still not stable at manufactor spec than I'd talk to who ever you bought it from about replacing it or refund and buy something thats on the Nvidia compatible list.
Most ram manufactors have a list of motherboards that there ram will work on but sometimes the newer boards like K7N2 or not listed yet as still working that out.

  • How can I erase all phantom iCal data from my iPhone/Flat Panel Mac?

Tried many ideas and Apple Genius could not even help me. Here is the scoop...
I created an iCloud account then synched my iPhone to my Flat Panel. Suddenly my iPhone showed up to six duplicates of iCal events (often a week or two later than the actual event). My Flat Panel iCal showed no such events. I erased all data and settings from the iPhone, restarted it from scratch (both from a back-up and as a new iPhone). As soon as I synch it to the Flat Panel the multiple events reappear on the iPhone but still not on the Flat Panel. I checked the "replace all calendar info" box in iTunes before synching. I deleted my iCloud account. I tried synching my old 1st gen iPod to teh Flat Panel, and the iCal info there is correct. I erased the iPhone and started over by starting it up/synching with my Macbook Air. The iCal info is now correct on my iPhone. How can I go back to synching on my Flat Panel? Where is the phantom info hiding on the Flat Panel?
Thanks for helping me with this strange problem!
    John

    Ohnj,
I presume that you are no longer trying to use iCloud for syncing with the "Flat Panel." It will not work since you are using OS X 10.5.8.
Quit iCal, go to your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars folder and remove any/all files with "Cache" as a part of the file name. Then log out/in or restart and see what happens.

  • Phantom music that won't go away.

Alright, for at least a month now I have had "phantom" unexplained music playing on my MacBook. I don't know where it came from or where it's coming from. It is there most of the time, but some times it will stop and then start again. Does ANYONE have any idea where to start with this? I am so lost / confused. Anything that I could try to do myself would be great, otherwise I'll have to make a trek to the Apple Store. Thanks!

For reference, here is what I have open in my Activity Monitor:
    Safari (of course)
    Finder
    SystemUIServer
    iChat
    All my Dashboard widgets
    Activity Monitor (of course)
    Dock
    smcFanControl
    loginwindow
    ATSServer
    iChatAgent
    UniversalAccessApp
    SyncServer
    mdimport
    AppleSpell
    pbs
I'm guessing that other than Safari, iChat, smcFanControl, and Activity Monitor, these are the standard programs used for the OS. Do you see anything else (other than the apps you know are open) that you don't recognize? If so, try quitting them.
Or you can try pasting this list to TextEdit or whatever, quitting every app open (except for Activity Monitor and TextEdit) and seeing if there's anything running that's not on this list. If so, try quitting them and see if the sound stops.
You should also look in your Login Items and see if there's anything there besides iTunes Helper and any other programs you want started when you turn on your computer. If there are, you should delete them and restart to see if the music is gone.

  • Phantom wireless network!

Hi. I'm not really sure what piece of hardware or software is causing this problem, so this may not be the right place to ask, but here's the deal:
I have a wireless network consisting of a Linksys WRT54G (The one pretty much everyone has), a PowerBook, a Dell laptop and a wired iMac G4. A month or so ago, the wirelessly connected computers lost their ability to connect to the internet. I ended up reseting the router and starting a new network with a new name. After I reset the router, however, I noticed something puzzling. The old network was still showing up!
Even with the router unplugged, the old network shows up in the list of wireless networks on both the Macs and the PC. This persists even after restarting the computers or turning wireless off and on. I'm able to connect to it, and it shows full signal, but will not connect to the internet. It appears side by side with the 'real' network, which works fine.
I can only think of two explanations for this, either I somehow accidentally set up a computer-to-computer network on one of the computers, under the same name as the old network (which I find quite unlikely), or that a third party is spoofing my old network.
The phantom network isn't causing too much of a problem, although my PowerBook keeps connecting to it by default instead of the working one, but it does have me pretty confused, so I was wondering if anyone had a clue as to what was going on.
    Thanks,
    Zweben

"There's a way to get your book to choose the preferred network... did you highlight that old one and hit the minus button?"
Where is the area you're talking about?
"Did you remove it from your Keychain?"
    It's not in my keychain.
"Did you change Passwords along with the name?"
The new network has a new password.
Is there any utility that can give me some more information about the network, to help me figure out where it's coming from?

  • Phantom library won't go away

My iPhoto library is on an external firewire drive; and while in iPhoto, I accidentally pulled the cable slightly, which was enough to disconnect it. As a result, all my thumbnails became empty frames with no associated photos; but all my albums were still shown. When I quit and restarted iPhoto, the albums were still there with empty thumbnails. It did not matter whether my firewire drive was attached or not. I did a SpotLight search for an iPhoto Library folder on my internal hard drive to delete, but could not find one. All my iPhoto files are still accessible on my external drive, but I can't get iPhoto to load them. There is some phantom library that has all my albums and empty thumbnails with the right names and sizes, but I don't know where it is.

Beverly Maneatis in a thread on different subject provided the answer. She should get some points for this, but I don't know how to give her credit. Sorry.

  • Phantom messages appear in search results

Hello. When I search for a message in Mail, the search results often include three instances of the same message. One is the correct message. The other two, however, are phantoms. There is no mailbox listed for these phantoms, and if I click on a phantom in the search results window, nothing in the message pane, just a "show in mailbox" link. If I click on "show in mailbox" link for these phantoms, Mail does nothing.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
I'm using IMAP to a server at my university, so perhaps could this be a problem with the mail server?
    Any advice is appreciated.

How long has this been going on? Are these "phantoms" messages that you deleted before and still showing up, or are they all the same message, with the same date and time?
Have you tried rebuilding your Mail index? It could be corrupted. To do that:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Mail and remove (do not delete) the Envelope Index file(s) to your Desktop.
    3. Restart Mail and allow it to import your existing messages. When that's finished, try searching for those same messages again and see if the phantoms still show up; you can also delete the Envelope Index file on your Desktop.
    Post back with results.

  • Duplicate / Phantom Messages

We have recently upgraded to Exchange2013 and Office365 on-premise.  We have roughly a 1000 user network and we have about a dozen users experiencing an odd issue with Outlook.
At random times these users will get a new message or new messages into their Inbox and they will receive what appears to be several copies of the message.  However there is truly only one valid message and the other are phantoms or ghost messages that
you can't click on or do anything with.  These message will sit in their Inbox for a while and then as the user get another new random message all of the phantom messages will suddenly be removed.  They are also removed when we Remote Assist into
their PC to help them with the issue.
It appears that it may be a screen refresh issue since they randomly get removed each time you use remote assist or when new messages come in.
Have done the following to troubleshoot:  Repair the Outlook Profile,   Delete and Create a new Profile,   Switch from Cached mode to OnLine mode,    ran a repair on Office365.  Still experiencing the issue.
Please share if you have any experience or help on this!
    Thanks,
    Brian

    Hi Brian,
Can you see duplicated items from OWA?
Did you installed any security programs in your environment? If so, please temporarily turn off them to check the result.
In addition, we can try to create a new .ost file to test the issue. Just rename the Outlook data files to .old and restart Outlook to check result.
If the problem persists, please use MFCMAPI tool to check if you can find and delete the duplicate messages. You can refer to the following article:
    http://www.slipstick.com/how-to-outlook/delete-stuck-read-receipts/
Please let me know the result. Hope it helps.

  • Phantom Usage When In Standby

I started a thread when the OS was at 2.0 about phantom usage:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8136179
Thought it would go away in 2.1... but it hasn't:
    http://gallery.me.com/wsuschmitt#100019/IMG_0001&bgcolor=black
I believe that the iPhone 3G has a flaw in the OS that doesn't shut off the processor and drains the battery through what I'm calling "phantom usage"; that is, accumulated usage time on the iPhone 3G even when not using it.
I understand a bit of time will be used under "push" conditions, but if you take a look at the screenshot in the gallery link above, you'll see that of the 18 hours of being off the charger, there is 10 to 11 hours of usage. Problem is, 8 of those 18 hours was spent by me sleeping, and another 8 hours was spent at work. I know I'm not using the iPhone while sleeping and I don't have time to use the phone constantly while at work.
So, of the 18 hours of being off the charger, I can probably account for MAYBE 2 hours of use. Where did the other 8 to 9 hours (for a total of 10h 52 min) of usage come from? This phantom usage is killing me, as I have to charge the phone 1-2 times a day to get any real use out of it.
Anyone else still have phantom usage on their phones after upgrading to 2.1?
Anyone know how to kill the phantom usage? Again, there were lots of suggestions in the thread above, but none of them worked for me.
The phantom usage is there even when push is turned off, WiFi is off, there are no additional applications, and the phone is set to auto-lock after 3 minutes.
    This is my second iPhone.
The phantom usage seems to disappear after a fresh restore without a backup of the iPhone for about a day, but then the battery life disappears and the phantom usage starts up again after a couple of days.

This reply is from a NEW user that has only had my IP 3G for 3 weeks.
Since we don't have a process explorer, that I know of, to verify this...I read that most of the apps you open continue to run if you hit the home button. The ONLY way to stop the apps from continuing to run is when you quit an app is to hold the home button for up to 10 seconds until the screen goes blank and then release to return to the home page. This will shut down the app completely.
The other option is (and it seems to be true by the response above) is to shut off the device with the power switch to stop all applications and restart. The user I read about says he does it a least once per day.
I would suggest we try both ways to verify the results by
    - complete app shut down with the extra long home button hold
    - OR shutting off main power once per day
    then compare the results.
I know I myself have tried both and they seem to help but I haven't monitored the usage data figures.
I will start to take note of these and see if either option helps.

  • Duplicate/phantom folders in Bridge

I'm having a little trouble believing this is a Bridge problem, but its the only place these show up, so...
    Windows 7, 64-bit, CS6 13.0.1, LR4, Bridge 5.0.2.4
I do my organizing in Lightroom 4.  And recently, I've reorganized some files in folders, and RENAMED folders in Lightroom.  If you use Lightroom you're probably aware of how bothersome it is to resync everything, so it's easier just to do the fiddling and renaming there.
BUT, I still use Bridge for a variety of things.
Recently in Bridge (within the last couple days is the first time I've seen it), I'm getting sort-of duplicate folders in bridge.  My image structure looks like
IMG_024_20070331 - so it's the 24th folder of images, and the date of the LAST image is 3/31/2007
If I reorganize and move files, I may rename the folder IMG_024_20070413 so it's STILL the 24th folder and the last image is now from 4/13/2007
Its a simple system and it makes it easy to find things when I'm searching 'cause I usually know the date or approximate date...
BUT, even though Windows Explorer KNOWS there's only 1 folder - IMG_024_20070413, as does Lightroom, xplorer2, and as near as I can tell, every other piece of software on the system,
Bridge, still shows IMG_024_20070331 as well as IMG_024_20070413...
I have a half dozen of these folders where Bridge is still showing the old folder as well as the renamed one...........
I've compacted cache.  I've FLUSHED cache.  I've rebooted and completely DELETED the entire fold structure on the partition that holds nothing BUT cache.
I've shutdown and restarted Bridge and pretty much everything else I can think of.
Is there somewhere that Bridge keeps additional information I need to delete?  Is there something I need to refresh?  And I've been renaming these folders intermittently for the last couple months.  WHY is it only showing up now and only with the last few folders?  The update checker SAYS I'm current at 5.0.2.4, but I don't know when it got updated...
    What am I missing?

Workflow...  A couple weeks ago I decided it was time to reload from scratch, so I re-installed Windows 7.  Which meant re-installing Photoshop and all that stuff.  Which meant it did all the updates.
I've been doing other stuff, so I'm not sure I've been in Bridge where I'd have noticed the problem in the last week or so, which is about how long I've had all the new installs up and running...
So, it's a brute force "fix", but I opened Bridge and dithe "reset your preferences" thing.  Then immediately un-installed all the Photoshop stuff and re-installed all the Photoshop stuff.  When I restarted Bridge I pointed the cache at a different partition......
I have NO idea WHICH thing fixed it, but no more phantom folders...  Curt, your idea about workflow finally got me thinking WHY was I only seeing recent folders as phantoms rather than ALL the ones I'd fiddled with...  And the ones I WAS seeing were all recent - in the last week or so.  So WHY it'd make any difference I don't know, but it appears to be happy again.  I'll try fiddling with stuff in Lightroom, make sure no new phantom folders show up, then if it's good I"ll point things back to the "cache" partition...
    Thanks for your help...

  • Unread phantom emails

I would love some input from anyone who has figured out how to get rid of the phantom unread emails in Apple Mail for Mac. They ONLY show up on my work PC; not at home, or on my phone. Didn't start getting them until I downloaded to Mavericks, but I don't know if that's the issue or not.
I have been through every e-mail in every folder; I definitely do not have any unread e-mails.

    This worked perfectly!!!
Thank you for the response and the accurate assistance!
"I had the same problem. What i did was:
    Shut down Mail
In Finder, go to "~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/" (just do CMD+Shift+G and paste the path)
Move all "Enevelope" files to another place (like desktop)
Restart Mail and let it convert/reindex your mailboxes
Your Mail should be OK now and teh phantom messages should also appear
If this did work out, you can trash the Envelope Files you moved earlier.
I did try to simply re-build my Mailboxes, but it dident work out. The approach above did the trick.
    Hope it helps

  • Stumped over "phantom" hidden file...

Anyone taking the time to answer, thank you in advance for your effort. It's much appreciated.
I'm using FCS 7.0.3 running on SL 10.6.8
I went to output an FCP movie (not a QT conversion) at current settings (ProRes 422, HD 1080p30, A/V, self contained, etc.). Stupidly, I set my desktop as the target disk for the output, started the process and walked away for a minute. When I came back, I got the "out of disk space" error so I figured I'd navigate to the desktop, delete the partial file, if any, and reset my target to try again. However, there was no partial file or any file with the name I had given to be found anywhere on my Mac but it ate up a substantial amount of my sytem disk space which, no matter what I do - trash prefs, restart, etc. - I cannot seem to recover. I'm thinking it could be a matter of "phantom" render files or something like that; I've had similar situations in the past where, after an FCS or full system restart or both, the supposedly used disk space is restored but not this time. I can't figure it out.
Now, after having trashed FCS prefs a couple of times, FCS fails to load.
    Frustration level = Olympic
Again, any help is greatly appreciated and thank you for taking the time.

Hi, Detlef. Thank you for responding.
I checked that folder already, emptied the trash, fixed system disk permissions, et al.
One note: the project I'm working on was cut on and migrated from another workstation. Also (and I just saw this this morning), I'm getting an error message about effects not loading and that they won't be applied to the final output. I'm assuming it's because my system doesn't have the plugs the original one does and, therefore, cannot finish the output... but where did the unfinished file go???
    Very perplexing.

  • "Phantom" Clips in Bins

Something weird is happening with my Bins. A few have developed phantom duplicates of all clips. So there are two listed for every file. But - for the most part - only one of each of these is able to be dragged or opened. And if I change the one file - like rename it - the other file gets renamed, too. And when I drag the one file, it has a [ +1 ] underneath it.
I've tried quitting and restarting. Trashed my prefs - but I don't know what this is. Is this some "feature" that I have turned on? See the below attached screen-capture to get an idea of what I'm dealing with.

  • Outlook shows SOME deleted messages even after restart

I'm having a problem with deleting messages on Exchange (IMAP). This problem falls somewhere between javamail, Exchange, and Outlook. I do something like this:
        folder = store.getFolder(folderPath);
        folder.open(Folder.READ_WRITE);
        Message[] msgs = folder.getMessages();
        // do processing
        for ( Message m : msgs )
            m.setFlag( javax.mail.Flags.Flag.DELETED, true );
folder.close(true); //  Expunge all messages w/DELETED flagThis works MOST of the time. For some reason, Outlook 2003 continues to show SOME of the deleted messages in the folder, even if I click on "Send/Receive", and even if I restart Outlook. No exceptions occur during the processing.
I also wrote a simple program to get all messages in the folder. This program shows that there are 0 messages in the folder, but they continue to show up in Outlook. Anyone know why Outlook still displays these "phantom" messages!?
    TIA,
    Vick

Here's a debug session sample where the folder shows 2 messages in Outlook, but none in JavaMail. The two messages in Outlook can be opened and viewed. They remain even after "Send/Receive" and restart of Outlook. These two "phantom" messages were deleted with JavaMail in a previous pass using code shown in previous post.
