PHD Login Sync

I have a problem with Portable Home Directories. Our setup consists of 10.4.9 clients, a 10.4 server and AD in a Golden Trinagle setup. Everything works fine except for one little hitch. The login sync does not happen. It does when you login a new account (i.e. an account that has not logged in to the machine before) but every other login does not cause a sync. Background and logout syncs work fine. So, when you login, the login sync doesn't happen but if you wait a couple of minutes the background sync happens and then everything works as expected. I've set the log level of MirrorAgent to 4 and turned printTrees on. However the login sync entry still looks quite sparse.

I thought it might be our groups so I created a plain group with the vanilla sync and created a new user and home directory. Same deal. Our SOE might have been the issue (we have some customised scripts) so I installed a vanilla 10.4.7 client and bound it to AD and OD. Authentication and initial sync worked without issue but again, subsequent login syncs did not happen.
Before I lose my marbles, I'd like to ask three questions. One, is this SUPPOSED to happen? In other words, is this the default behaviour and I just never noticed? Two, has anyone had this issue before? Three, does anyone have any idea why it might be doing this? Please keep in mind that every time we tested a new scenario (i.e. changed the parameters of the test), we cleared the home directory on the server (fully. all hidden files included) and we removed the cached account from the client and removed references from NetInfo).
Any ideas, suggestions or anecdotes would be highly appreciated.

No, I'm not using Active Directory. By my understanding, the key that enables PHD to work is the fact that a Kerberos ticket is in place after the login window so that the connection to the file server hosting the home folder can happen without intervention. I know that automounting is not required as I have machines no longer connecting to my Open Directory that still happily PHD sync at login, background and logout.
Perhaps you can test manually connecting the shared location of the PHD right after login to see if it can happen without intervention. The ability for background sync to work would indicate that this would happen. It might be something to do with the timing of the login, ticket granting, hosted share connection. I'm sorry I can't offer more. Good luck.

  • Does PHD Login Sync Work at All?

Am I expecting too much? But does the login sync even work for anyone? After I setup a user in no instances zero have I got login sync to work as described after an initial sync not even 1 time!!!!!!!
I've got brand new 10.5.8 server/client nothing configured for PHD except mobile preferences for PHD and it never works. Followed multiple guides just not happening.
This would be a great feature for us but as of now I'm giving up and moving on to something else because my experience is not a good one I wouldn't consider using any part of the Mobility prefs as it seems to work NEVER.

PHD setup is a bit ridiculous in that it doesn't quite seem to do what you expect. At least for my district's setup we had to enable both login / logout sync and background sync for login sync to work. Your best bet is to do all you configuration in the com.apple.homesync preference found under Preferences Details tab in WGM, do some exploring in there you get a lot more granular control and discover the settings make a lot more sense.

  • SQL Server AlwaysON- Login Sync Utility/Script

    Team,
We have a synchronous Always ON AG configured in our environment. I was looking for the best practices to have the logins sync if there are any additions. Also the way the application is configured is they have the ability to perform the db additions and
sync them to AoAG group. However the challenge here is orphaned users.
Can we make these databases contained databases on AlwaysON? If so please do recommend the best practices.
    Thanks for your assist.
    Best Regards,
    Sharath

  • PHD not syncing

    We are running osx server 10.4.8 o9n 2 xserve, G5 and G4.
All teachers, around 100 of them, have PHD on iMacs G5 also running 10.4.7 and 10.4.8.
An Apple engineer configured the server and imported the users.
We set the computer list to mobile, syncing at login/logout only their desktop, Document folders and the Safari bookmarks.
When the user logs in for the first time, it asks if they want to create a PHD and after clicking yes, creates the account but never syncs. At log out or log in, nothing.
We tested by saving a document and then loging out and checking in the server where the directory home folder for the user is and the document is not there.
    Have we missed something?
The Apple engineer wants to delete all users and do the configuration again but I am not happy about that because the users will lose everything they have created since they created their accounts and they probably won't be able to log in in that day. Any ideas?

First off, get set syncing working with one user, a test account. Then apply the change to the other users.
I'd suggest looking in the sync log in ~/Library/Logs/MirrorAgent.log. If there are errors try deleting the users ~/Libary/Mirrors/* when not logged in as that user (use Terminal and sudo from another user's login).
If there's nothing current the mirror log, then probably the user's home is not mounting. Look in the system log to see if there's mount failures. Also try to connect to the server using the Finder's Connect To... command from the test user's comptuer.
If all else fails, you can delete the user record only, not the home directory in th e Terminal with
    sudo dscl . -destroy /Users/username
When you login as the user again, it will create the mobile account and preserve the home.

  • Phd stopped syncing

I have a user using a macbook which stopped syncing. I have tried this macbook with a new user and it syncs back to the server without any problem so the problem seems to be with the user account and not the laptop.

I enabled server side file tracking for mobile home sync and the user which was not syncing started to sync properly. I don't understand why this should make a difference but it worked for me.

  • PHD and AirPort

I have been using Portable Home Directories with 10.5 server since the start of the year, and everything works quite well. Recently we have moved our MacBooks from a wired network to wireless and are using a RADIUS system.
The portable clients were set up under System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > 802.1x > + > Login Window Profile to allow authentication to the RADIUS system, and then allow network logon. At the login window clients read "Network Access Requires Logon".
The PHD clients sync as expected when connected to the wireless network, but now when the wireless network is unavailable (e.g. a user takes their MacBook home) the mobile account is unable to log in to the computer. I have removed the Login Window Profile and the client is working again as the wireless network is stored under the preferred networks and they are prompted to enter their password twice to authenticate to RADIUS.
I can't understand why it doesn't work in the first instance. This way is a much nicer and simpler way for the user to access the system, and allows other users to logon to the MacBook. Has anybody had experience with this (I hope I have described my problem without too much babble!).

In 'System Preferences>Network>Network Configuration' uncheck everything except 'Ethernet' and 'Airport'. Then click-and-drag the 'Ethernet' connection to the top of the list above the 'Airport' connection. Configure the 'Ethernet' connection to 'DHCP', then save the changes. Instruct your users to connect their Macbooks at home using a wired connection. When the Macbook starts up, it will check the 'Ethernet' connection first and then the 'Airport' connection and it will use the first connected interface, in this case 'Ethernet', because the preferred wireless network is unavailable. They should not have any issues at login as the PHD stores their log-in info on the client for disconnected operation.

  • Portable Home Directories and Login Hooks

We recently switched from Network Home Directories to Portable Home Directories. We used to use login hooks to do all kinds of nifty things to a user's home folder at login, but now it's complicated. I can't figure out at what point in the login+sync process the login hook executes.
If the login hook executes before syncing, then I need to modify the network copy of the home folder, i.e. Network/Servers/servername/.../username. If the login hook executes after syncing, then I need to modify the local copy of the home folder, i.e. /Users/username. Unless I'm mistaken, you can't just use the tilde (~) in the script to denote the path the home folder, so you have to list the path explicitly.
My testing seemed to result in inconsistent behavior. Can anyone give me some guidance?
(Keywords: Loginhook Logouthook Login Script Logout Script Mobility Mobile PHD)

Thank you for the advice, Syth, but I'm already aware of the basics of writing and implementing login and logout hooks. I wrote a lot of them when we were using Network Home Directories. The root of my question has to do with Portable Home Directories and login hooks.
This is a computer lab environment where every user has their own account, network home folder, and "Mobility" preferences set in Workgroup Manager. When a user logs into a lab computer, syncing kicks in and they work from a local copy of their home folder which then syncs to the server at login and logout.
So the core question is: Do login and logout hooks execute before or after login/logout home syncing occurs?
For example, if a user with a brand new network account, i.e. who doesn't even have a network home yet, logs into a computer, what's the order of events? I would hope it would be:
    1) server creates network home
    2) computer creates local home, i.e. syncs
    3) login hook executes
But my testing has been inconsistent. Anyone have any experience or insights to share?

User 2 (c) wanted like a particular cd on his phone and it synced onto iphone ok from the itunes library, also has never used the laptop before to sync normally uses icloud.
User 1(b) later downloaded 5 cds onto itunes and wanted to sync onto iphone but now cannot get the sync to work, however when you ask what is actually on the phone those cds do feature via itunes but are shown in grey on the screen whereas all the other music on the phone is in black.
    FACTs
I only have one laptop and one login on the laptop
All three phones have their own icloud
User 3(K) just uses icloud and doesn't use itunes on the laptop but occasionally buys tracks straight from itunes on her iphone
    QUESTION
Does this mean only one user can login/sync to itunes?
What is the solution to this problem so that all 3 users will be able to log on to itunes with the same login on the laptop to sync cds onto iphones?
    Would Home Sharing help?
    Thanks

You are going to need to change the email address you use with your old ID. Once you have got access to your old account you will then log into both accounts at the same time on your Mac and transfer your data to a single account. We can do this later, but need you to get access to your old account first.

  • Mobile Home Sync Issues

I just setup a 10.5 Server and 10.5 client - Home sync is working, however my login sync is set to do ONLY ~/Library - it seems to search the entire home folder, and syncs what ever has changed - I've tried reseting this and haven't had any luck. It seems to happen on any of the 3 accounts I've created so far. Anyone else having this issue? I'm in the learning process, but have to roll out a similar setup for a client pretty soon - I can't have my login/logout times this long .
    Homes are setup via AFP
    G5 1.8 Dual 4GB Ram 1x 75GB Raptor (Boot) 1x External 1TB HD
Clean Install no upgrade (this is a test machine)
    10.5 Server Running:
    OD
    DNS
    DHCP
    AFP
    SMB
    PRINT
    iCAL
    WEB
    10.5 Client (PBG4 1.67, 2GB RAM, 80GB)
    - Clean install - 1 admin account - other accounts via OD/Mobile Homes

There's a bucketload of new preference keys in com.apple.HomeSync.plist that affect what syncs when:
    <key>syncBackgroundSetAtLogin</key>
    <string>dontSync</string>
    <key>syncBackgroundSetAtLogout</key>
    <string>dontSync</string>
    <key>syncPreferencesAtLogin</key>
    <string>sync</string>
    <key>syncPreferencesAtLogout</key>
    <string>sync</string>
    <key>syncPreferencesAtSyncNow</key>
    <string>sync</string>
    <key>syncPreferencesInBackground</key>
    <string>dontSync</string>
I think that you want to set syncBackgroundSetAtLogin and syncBackgroundSetAtLogout to dontSync.

  • Portable Home Syncing corrupts iPhoto Library

    Server setup:
Snow Leopard Server 10.6.2 (clean install)
Everything setup according to spec; works great.
    Client setup:
    Snow Leopard 10.6.2 (clean install)
    iLife '09
Portable syncing rule set to sync the Pictures folder ONLY at login and logout. At no other time is it sync.
    Bug:
Everytime it syncs; the entire iPhoto Library gets corrupted and I get a 'There was a problem syncing this file'
When I check the file, the iPhoto Library is a generic white icon with a size of a few megs versus the original 5GB. (yes I have a backup).
Any idea what may be causing this?
I cannot deploy Snow Leopard Server for my clients because of this silly bug.

    Hi all.
I'm also having serious problems concerning "Home Syncing".
So far those are my conclusions:
    • Home Syncing cannot understand when a file is locked. It will simply replace the "archived" file on the server with a corrupted and incomplete one. (Time Machine, for instance, delays the syncing of that file until it is no longer being used):
    • Because of the last problem it's impossible to use the syncing interval on the System Preferences. It's simply begging for havoc and chaos.
    • Home Syncing (again on direct opposition to Time Machine) does not understand the concept of bundles (or packages, whatever is the correct expression in English... English that I'm not a native nor a fluent speaker, sorry about that
Not being able to understand those wonderful "folders as a single file" concept makes it try to copy my full Aperture library, even if I just open and close the thing.
So it's guaranteed fun for almost half an hour every time that I do some logout sync.
    • Even using only login / logout sync, Aperture library will get eventually corrupted, as will pretty much every other item that I try to sync that happens to be a bundle (That God for 1Password automatically backup of it's own library, otherwise I would have lost all my logins passwords and Software serial numbers).
    • Every so often files that were deleted on a machine on the last day, simply find their way back at login syncing.
And the opposite also happens. Changes made in a user folder on one of the machines, simply don't replicate when a user logs in onto another one.
    • If a folder or file name is changed, Home Syncing will not understand that as a change.
Instead it will get from the server the old file/folder while keeping the new one.
Since it will copy the full content of the folder, just changing the name back to the old one, you better pray that there's not that much info inside otherwise it's time to grab a coffee and the daily newspaper.
    • Copying is slow. Painfully slow!
In a full Gigabit Ethernet connection, whose transfer while using AFP are extremely fast, Home Syncing can take 10x the amount of time to copy a similar folder.
Home Syncing seems pretty much as a 2nd class citizen on the Server package.
It's copy capabilities are way bellow of the expected, showing basic errors that were quickly fixed on Time Machine but that still remain here since (at least) Mac OS X Server 10.5.
I like this concept... actually I like it a lot.
As long as you have access to a Mac OS X Server, you can basically create your own cloud.
Even without having to sync the full home folder, just a specific "cloud" folder (something like a dropbox folder).
That connected with a Time Machine backup to allow you to retrieve older version of a file (whenever necessary) and you would have a great and safe working environment... something that I would love to do, if only Home Syncing wasn't just a big disaster.
Let's hope that Apple can figure out what's happening and release an update to fix this.

  • Trouble syncing Wi-Fi network passwords via Keychain

I'm having a few issues getting my iPhone, iPad and my MacBook Pro to correctly sync Wi-Fi network passwords via iCloud Keychain – it's sporadic at the best of times.
I've had this happen in the past and sometimes resetting the keychain (as well as the saved networks on my devices) fixes the issue. However, at present, I do not wish to force a reset as I do not think it should be necessary for the functionality to work.
I recently joined a friend's Wi-Fi network at his home on my iPhone.  Hours later, my iPad (a cellular model) hadn't connected to the network; I had to manually re-enter the details.  Additionally, when I got home, I noticed my MacBook Pro didn't list the network in Keychain Access or the Network pref pane.  All the devices run the either OS X 10.10.2 or iOS 8.1.3.  iCloud Keychain is correctly setup on all three devices, and I can confirm credit card information and logins sync fine – I've just created a new login, and a fake credit card and this propogated to the other two devices.  Deleting it on another correctly removed it from the original on which it was created.
Any ideas here? Can't work out why Safari data syncs, but not Wi-Fi information.

    Hello Brianquery,
I do not know of a Smartprint line of products. Are you referring to the Photosmart or Officejet 5510?
You could use this link to find your printer:
    http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html
If you locate the product you're using just type airprint in the search field. If it is not found or it is not compatible you should also check for ePrint capabilities.
    I work with HP.

  • Disabling LDAP sync

    Hi All
I tried to disable LDAP sync and here are my issues
1 - I tried to put all the Boolean values in /db/ldapMetadata/EventHandlers.xml to "FALSE" but I ended that the user get "initiated status" although I am using autoapprover workflow. I expected that I'll get the registration is "complete" and see the user in the USR table in OIM schema but this didn't happen.
2 - I deleted /db/ldapMetadata/EventHandlers.xml from MDS and ended having the following error in my log
cid: 0000JNZ4ezG4IvVRy2f9D01FLBdO00000p,0] [APP: oim#11.1.1.3.0] An error occurred while creating the user in LDAP.[[
oracle.iam.platform.kernel.EventFailedException: Could not retrieve the user id of the reserved user.
    Did I miss anything here
    Thanks

The following should illustrate the WGM settings that should make this work for you:
    *Account Creation:*
Uncheck the 'Require confirmation before creating mobile account' and 'Show "Don't ask me again" checkbox' if you wish to disable those choices.
    *Login/Logout sync:*
This will sync only the folders indicated at login/logout only on the first login/logout cycle. Change this to add other user folders to preserve files as you see fit.
    *Background Sync:*
These settings will sync the entire user folder twenty minutes after first login and will sync every twenty minutes while the user is logged in. On subsequent logins syncing will take place twenty minutes after login. Adjust the time as you see fit as indicated below.

  • Slow Guest Login

I just posted another thread about slow PHD login issues, but this is separate (I think). I have modified the guest accounts on our work computers to include some customizations such as a set of calendar subscriptions, a reduced set on the Dock, and some custom Safari preferences like home page and bookmarks. When I try to log in as a guest, there is a pause at the login screen for somewhere between 30 seconds and 10 minutes. The guest icon looks like it has been pressed, but the screen is unresponsive and does not yet show the login process. Eventually, it successfully logs in.
Is there anything I can do to speed this up? People often think that it isn't working, and try clicking Guest over and over again. And even if you do understand that it is slow, it seems ridiculous that one should have to wait for minutes on end just to log in.
It looks like the total size of the /System/Library/User Template folder is about 280MB - 125MB of ~Library/Application Support, 50B of ~Library/Calendars, and around 80MB of ~/Library/Fonts. Is this what's causing the slowdown? I imagine that I could move some of the fonts (probably from Microsoft Office) to /Library/Fonts, but I don't know how much I could reduce the sizes of the others.
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Greg

It looks like the total size of the /System/Library/User Template folder is about 280MB - 125MB of ~Library/Application Support, 50B of ~Library/Calendars, and around 80MB of ~/Library/Fonts. Is this what's causing the slowdown?
Your customized User Template folder is definitely part of the problem, if not all of the problem. The normal size of that is 6.7 MB. Every time one logs into the guest account, the entire contents of User Template is being copied to ~guest. That can take quite a while if you have grown it to 280MB.
Hacking the System Folder is not a good way to customize the guest account. Set the User Template back to the OS X default. Move the fonts and app support files into /Library/Fonts and /Library/Application Support, where they will be accessible to all users. Use Workgroup Manager (part of the Leopard Server Admin Tools free download) to customize the Dock.

  • Sync missing files in ~/Documents only

    Here goes.
    – Login on client1 (not a first time login)
    – create a file in ~Documents, get's synced to server in background or at logout (checked on the server so it's there alright).
    – Logout
    – Login on client2 (not a first time login)
    – Sync at login or in background doesn't matter, sometimes the new files won't get synced from the server in ~/Documents, all the other ~ folders sync nicely thu.
…however if I create a new file in ~/Documents on client2, and force a sync or logout for sync to occur; that new file get's moved to the server – and the new files from client 1 get's synced to client2.
Thinking about scripting a touch on some file in ~/Documents, so it always get changed at login, so the sync occur there aswell on all files.

    Hi,
    Please check if it's hidden:
Control Panel, Folder Options, View Tab, Check mark Show Hidden Files & Folders, Uncheck Hide protected Operating System Files and check show hidden files, folders and drivers.
If it still disappear, it should be permanently deleted. You need to ask for some professional recovery company to get the data.
