Phone call saying they were from Microsoft Windows

I received a phone call today from a man that said he was from Microsoft Windows, & that Microsoft had been receiving notices for several weeks that " something" was wrong with my computer.  Offline he had me do a system check, then said my computer
was corrupted, then put on his floor supervisor who had me get online and do some more system checks and told me that I was corrupted and it would cost $150-$350 to fix. I hung up thinking this might be a scam.  My question is do you have someone who
makes these type phone calls, or was it a scam? If it is corrupted how do I fix it.
Thanks for your help

Hi, I also had a phone call from someone who claimed they were from the microsoft team and were having warnings suggesting that my computer had serious issues.  When I asked which computer they said the one with windows 7.  After a long phone call
and they even went onto my computer remotely without asking for my permission showed me severial files which they classed as hackers trying to get into my information which can be corrected at a cost of £89.  When I told them I was not interested as the
computer was only a cheap note book for the kids to use, I was put onto someone else for them to convince me that now all computers used in the home are now effected.   It came to an end with me hanging up on them.  If anybody out there is interested
into investigating this, the company who is doing this is: BC Repair and Services, and claim to be microsoft authorised services.  Tel number:020390105670.
Hope this can help,
Ian

  • Got a call from someone saying they were from Microsoft but it seemed fishy

Today I got a call from someone with a strong Indian accent claiming they were from microsoft and that my computer was in critical condition. I can't recall microsoft ever calling people personally about this so it automatically seemed like a scam. I told
him I didn't believe it fairly quickly and hung up. So I wanted to know in case there really is something wrong, do microsoft people ever call customers to tell them of errors? Is this just a scam and in which case is there a way for me to report these people?

Its a scam.  A well known and long running one.  Microsoft will never ask for personal details (they already have them) and
will never cold call you.  Nor do they send out anti virus messages
Microsoft does not do that nor do they have partners who do that

Is anyone accountable at verizon? will i ever really get my phone? i've seen people on this forum order later than me and get their phone quicker

I looked in the My Orders section of my Verizon account this morning (12/22),  My SG iPhone 6+ 1228GB is now listed under my Recent Orders and my card was charged yesterday,  So I am thinking it will ship Monday morning.  This is how the process went for my wife's S 64GB 6+ two weeks ago.  This is an interesting turn of events since I was also one to receive the email on Thursday about it being pushed back to 12/12  I'll keep you all posted.
    Also I ordered 10/13.

  • Why do all of my incoming calls on my iPhone 5c say they are from unknown, even though I have the person calling already in my contacts?

Caller ID can also be turned off on some networks e.g. iOS has a setting for UK phones to turn it off. You should try calling from a number you know is not blocked from sending the caller ID.

Hello, try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
[[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
[[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

  • Health rollup to computer object from Microsoft.Windows.ApplicationComponent

    Hi All.
Trying to author a Management Pack in Authoring Console 2007 R2. And can't get rollup to work as I want.
    Here's the long story.
    I've created:
    A discovery MP witch holds:
    - an abstract class inherited from Microsoft.Windows.Computer, named: "AppX.Cmp.Role"
    - a (seed?) class inherited from the above, named: "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server"
    - a class inherited from "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server" named "App.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator"
    - a class inherited from "Microsoft.Windows.ApplicationComponent" named: "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator.Loginstance"
    - a class of type "Microsoft.SystemCenter.InstanceGroup" named: "AppX.Group"
    - a relationship (system.hosting) where source class is "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator" and target class is "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator.Loginstance"
    - a registrydiscovery to discover "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server" targeted at "Windows.Operating.System"
    - a scriptdiscovery to discover "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator" targeted at "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server"
    - a scriptdiscovery to discover "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator.Loginstance" targeted at "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator"
    - a groupdiscovery ("Microsoft.SystemCenter.GroupPopulator") target: "AppX.Group" (Microsoft.Windows.Computer)
    - a dependencymonitor targeted at "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator" and monitor dependency set to "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator.Loginstance", HealthRollup set to "worst state".
A monitoring MP (depending on the discovery MP) witch holds:
    - a processmonitor targeted to "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator" and "replicator.exe"
    - a logfilemonitor targeted to "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator.Loginstance"
    - a stateview targeted to "AppX.Group"
When I kill the "replicator.exe" process the object goes to unhealthy all the way up to "Windows.Computer". But when the logfilemonitor triggers and turns into "unhealthy state" the object in the above view turns RED but not the
"Windows.Computer" object (looking at the default view "Windows Computers").
Is it possible to get the "Windows.Computer" object to reflect the "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator.Loginstance" state?
    How?

Sorry about that - its been a long weekend.
    I was quoting from the following;
    "Use the Microsoft.Windows.LocalApplication as
a base class when your class type represents a local application that shares the resources of the hosting Windows computer with other applications. Unlike theMicrosoft.Windows.ComputerRole class,
    the Microsoft.Windows.LocalApplication class
type does not automatically roll its health up to the hosting computer."
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee533867.aspx
Would you be able to upload the results if you run the Visio MP diagram generator and possibly the health explorer views and this will help me see how it hangs togther?

  • HT2486 I recently updated to Lion, when I accessed my address book I now have duplicates of cards that are in my contacts and groups. When I try to merge it says they come from different accounts. Any suggestions?

I recently updated to Lion, some of my groups lost members and when I add them back in I get duplicate and even more of the same card. I am not allowed to merge the because the msg says they come from different accounts, any suggestions?

You likely have them in both the On My Mac account and the iCloud account. I deleted all from my On My Mac account except the ones I didn't want iClouded. Did the opposite on the iCloud account.

  • The event logging service encountered an error while processing an incoming event published from Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing.

Last night, some of our systems installed updates released on 11/13/2014.
    KB3021674
    KB2901983
    KB3023266
    KB3014029
    KB3022777
    KB3020388
    KB890830
Today, all of the servers running Windows Server 2008 R2 started logging the following error in the Security log over and over:
    Log Name:      Security
    Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Eventlog
    Date:          1/15/2015 11:12:39 AM
    Event ID:      1108
    Task Category: Event processing
    Level:         Error
    Keywords:      Audit Success
    User:          N/A
    Description:
The event logging service encountered an error while processing an incoming event published from Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing.
Servers running Windows Server 2008 that also installed the updates are not experiencing the problem.  It looks like one of the updates may have introduced this problem with Server 2008 R2.

...Did you for sure confirm that:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS15-001
    is the cause?
I did.  I had a VM that was not experiencing the problem.  I took a snapshot and tested the patches one by one.  Installing only KB3023266 immediately caused the issue to occur (after reboot).  A similar process was used to confirm that
    installing KB2675611 resolved the problem.
Note that I found the installation of KB2675611 is usually quick, but it took several hours hours to install on some of our systems.  We had installed this patch a few months ago on a couple of servers and it was always quick to install.  But,
it seems like installing it on a symptomatic system can cause it to take a long time.

I need to know if this is a legitimate call as he asked me to pull the event viewer and it did show warnings and errors, he asked me to delete but they would not delete and then we was asking me to type a url to ping, in the run box, the pc, that's

  • Can you choose to block phone calls but not texts from a number?

So I have searched all over the place and have not found an answer.  I am sure someone has blocked me from calling them because when I try to call them I recieve this message: "Welcome to Verizon Wireless. The number you were trying to reach has calling restrictions which has prevented the completion of your call."However I am wondering if they can still receieve my texts.  I have sent two and they both show that they have been delivered on my phone and they both also show up on my online bill as having been sent from me and recieved to the number that I am pretty sure has blocked me.  Does Verizon allow someone to block just phone calls but not text messages?  Or if you block a number from calling does that mean texting from that same number is automatically blocked as well (or is it two seperate processes)?  I understand it may look like it has been sent on my end, but I am wondering, since I never got a "message failed" indicator or anything else telling me they never got it, if they were able to receive and read the 2 messages?  We both are Verizon customers by the way.  Thanks!!!

That person did block you, and no they cannot receive or read your texts.

  • Hoax phone call, pretending to be from BT vision!

Today I received a call pretending to be from BT, after which I called them back , only to hear a recorded message that it was from The Postcode Lottery!
The guy on the phone said that BT needed to see that my vision box was still working and that they had not had a signal from it, he asked me go to BBC I-player and watch a program (for 30 seconds), whilst he waited on the line. Ater this he told me my surname and initial and first line of my address, he asked  me to tell him my first name and postcode. He had already told me the date I started my contract with BT, so I gave him the information he requested as I thought it was official. He did not ask for anyother information and said goodbye.
I thought the call was a little odd, that is why I checked the number.
Whilst  I can not see that any scam is involved, maybe I get a whole load of junk mail asking me to join their game, this practise seems a bit underhand and one that BT should be aware of!
I have already phone India  and told them what happened.
The number they used to call me on was 08004080817

  • Really bizarre phone call - says I won a free iPhone 5S

So I'm just curious if this has happened to anyone else - on September 19th, I received a phone call from an unknown UK number.
After taking the call - I was informed by a young male caller that I had won an iPhone 5S due to the fact that I had downloaded iOS7 the night before. It was extremely bizarre as the caller went on to claim that this was a giveaway/contest associate with Apple & congratulated me on winning the prize.
I told the guy that I was not interested & he suddenly provided me with my email address & my birth date (and obviously he had my phone number). He went on to say that he did not require any credit card information and would only need me to provide a shipping address (because it was not provided on my iTunes account ... I know this is incorrect because my mailing address is definitely on there). On a whim I provided him with an address I had access to, that was not connected to any of my personal accounts. After hanging up on the guy, I called Apple right away to verify if this was in fact a scam.
Apple confirmed that there are no contests/giveaways of the sort and asked me if I had entered any external "giveaways" recently. The answer is no - I had not. Because I had not given the person any important personal information, I let the situation go and went on with the day and pretty much forgot about it.
Then, a day later, I received a text message from the same individual noting an Apple order number. After calling Apple - it was verified that this was in fact a legitimate order and was being shipped to the address I provided within 2 weeks.
At that point, I decided to just see what happens next.
I called Apple on October 1st to verify if the order still existed (as October is when the iPhone 5s was to ship) and was notified that the order had in fact been terminated. This is when I came to the conclusion that the individual probably wanted my mailing address to either steal credit card information ... or something along the lines. Knowing that I did not provide a real address - I once again tried to forget the situation happened.
This individual just texted me informing me that I had cancelled the order & to confirm if I still wanted the prize.
And now I feel extremely paranoid. This seems to be an insane amount of effort to try and scam information & I want to know if I should advise the person who's address I provided to change all their locks and get an attack dog.
So just wondering if anyone else has experienced this ... ??

I think they must have gotten my info from Facebook. I did post that I got iOS7 up there .. And the rest of my info would be readily available.
I guess Ill see how this plays out - if I do receive a cheque ... I don't know. I may just toss it in the trash lol.
It's just so mean. When I received that text with the apple order confirmation number ... It was actually birthday. I had this joke with the friends that Apple celebrates my date of birth by launching phones on it - which is you know all silly jokes. But the fact that someone would use a day that's so special to you against you ... Well. The world is just messed up! Lol
If you actually get anything from them, in all seriousness, call you Police and let them have it.  Anything that they can potentially use in any way to toss such people into prison is ideal to my mind.  Physical things can often be useful to investigators in ways that most of us would never imagine.

  • I have files that have been on my computer for over a year and all of a sudden they wont open and an error message comes up saying they were improperly downloaded or came in an email attach which is not the case

I have files that have been on my computer for over a year and I have used them several times and all of a sudden they wont open.  I received an error message saying they are improperly downloaded or came as an email attachement which is not the case.  Please advise

They seem to be word files - they will open if I choose "open with" microsoft word, but if I double click they don't open they are appearing as PDF on my screen.  I even opened one and then tried to "save as" making sure I chose .doc and they still appear as PDF
I just created a new document response.doc in word and when I saved to my desktop it appears as a PDF file and I absolutely did not create a PDF or save as PDF it was a simple word
    doc.
The message says "Adobe reader could not open response.doc because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example attached in an email and not properly decoded)
The reader version is I believe the most current, I always update when prompted.  OS is Windows 8
