Phone carrier unlock.

Very simply am travelling and arrived at my first country. To save on phone charges I bought a local SIM but it doesn't work. I've been told my phone needs to be unlocked. Its an iphone 4, first time used overseas.

Ethmoid, thanks for your reply. Problem has been solved. For those interested, the solution was yes contact the carrier. The call center said I should sync my phone and all will be done. And it was....I synced the phone in the country I'm travelling and it worked. Aparently the "locking" of the phone comes from Apple's side as they don't want open access to the data base....I'm lost what this all means. But I'm happy.

It will be locked to mobily telecom, and according to Apple's list of supported carriers and their features (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937) they do not offer unlocking. Since only the carrier it is locked to can unlock it, you have bought a useless phone.

yes, when you bought the code, telenor tell you wait a few days, they offer to apple and unlock for your iphone, after a few days, you can check in the web, your imei Unlocked and you must restore your iphone with iturn, and conratulation your phone has been unlocked...

You need to swap the SIM.
The SIM is stored in a little pop-out tray on the top (IIRC) of the iPhone.
There was a 'SIM Removal Tool' inside the box your iPhone came in but you may be like 99% of the rest of the population who discarded or otherwise lost the tool, in which case a pin or paperclip might be an alternative.
Pop out the tray (using either the Tool or a pin), swap the SIM and re-insert the tray and you should be good to go.

Reset your network settings
remove your sim and insert it back in
switch it off and try it again
If none of these work i suggest you call up your network operator

I contacted AT&T to unlock my phone (which they did on their end). I then backedup and restored my phone per apple's instructions. How can I tell if it is unlocked? I misssed the screen saying the phone is now unlocked. AT&T said to call apple and give them the IMEI number, but I can not seem to find a way to do this without paying money.
I leave for a trip to the UK in a week and I want the option to use a local SIM over there. I would like to figure out if my phone is unlocked as I will not have access to a computer over there. THoughts?

Try a SIM from any other carrier (borrow one from a friend).
Contact Apple support and ask them.
Restore the device again.

to cut a long story short. I was interested in an i-phone... got the details..checked them all.. on the phone and with the provider, VODAPHONE... told unlocked, not stolen etc etc. proceeded to buy the phone...new sim topped up £10 only to find it wouldn't work...

As you can imagine I am really peeved by the whole thing as I actually carried out all the necessary checks, and whilst the phone was not bought directly from vodaphone, I went to them as the provider, to find otu about unlocking etc as it is always advised to do so..and it was them that gave me the wrong information but they still will not resolve the issue. I have even sent them phone records to confirm when I rung and the name of the invalid who told me the phone was unlocked in the first place. The iPhone HAS to be active making calls on the UK carrier network for the carrier to identify as "theirs" and therefore eligible for the Carrier to unlock
The way to achieve this is to use a PAYG sim making and receiving calls to establish a customer relationship with the Carrier and then follow the Carrier's process to unlock
With a PAYG it usually means adding a specified (by the carrier ) amount usually £15 /£20 depending on the carrier

The only official sources for iPhones, in Argentina, are either Claro, Movistar, or Personal. All three carriers offer official unlocking for the iPhone.

I am in Thailand trying to activate my iphone 4S with Thailand SIM card.
but the phone message says below.
This iPhone is not currently setup to work with carrier you're attempting to use. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked.
so my question is how do I know whether my phone is unlocked one or not, before I go and try get new SIM card.

If your phone will not work with another sim card, then it is likely to be locked to the original carrier.
The only way to get your phone unlocked is to contact that phone company/carrier that the phone is locked to and hope that they offer unlocking. Apple cannot unlock a phone for you, only the phone company that your phone is locked to can do that. Some offer unlocking and some don't, so if the phone company does not offer unlocking, then you are out of luck and you'll either have to buy a new phone or use a sim card of the comapny - take out a contract with the compnay that the phone is locked to.
Anyway - contact Apple to see whether your phone is locked conclusively and if you talk to them they can tell you what they need.

iphone 5 will use nanosim instead of microsim so that one won't work
you could check you with carrier to see if they will give you another sim though but I dunno if the ATT 5 will have the right data bands so you might not get LTE or w/e

ASk your friend who unlock the phone for him/her.
ONly the carrier that the phone is locked to is authorized to unlock it.
bAse on your description, it sounds like your friend had his/her phone hacked to unlock it from the original carrier.

If it's a genuine factory unlocked phone from Apple you should have no problems. I have had two, a 3GS and now a 4S, and they update and handle just like the locked phones. If it has been hacked in any way, though, all bets are off.

Cannot activate after carrier unlock

Cannot activate iphone after carrier unlock. Device says Apple's activation servers are unavailable and iTunes says no sim card in the device I am trying to activate.
The original carrier is AT&T, I live in Canada therefore I am not able to insert an AT&T sim card in the device.
I have restored and updated through itunes as instructed. Restored as new many times in fact.

Well there's nothing we here in this forum can do for you. It's between you, the person who sold you the phone, and the carrier. You'll need to somehow work it out amongst yourselves.
Nothing we users nor Apple can do at this point. Either the person is lying to you and telling you the phone was unlocked, or the phones was unlocked improperly.
