Phone doesn't work - broadband does
Hi,
Odd problem I'm having with my phone line, which has very recently (end of august) been installed as I'm living in a new house and it was wired for the first time. Broadband works fine, and I recall when the guy came to install it he said he get a dialtone. I cannot get a dialtone off any phone (admittedly I don't have a cordless phone, but I've got two cordless ones and neither work, one I literally brought yesterday so I see it very unlikely that they're both faulty.). The strange thing is that when I phone my number from say my mobile, it rings!
There's only one socket in the house and I've tried unplugging the broadband, not using the microfilter and plugging straight into the socket. Also tried into the inside socket bit of the master socket.
I don't want to get an engineer out if it is the phones, but really, two phones not working? Neither of them working on just the socket? Internet working perfectly, AND the phone ringing (which I think is the strangest thing)? Seems a little too odd to just be 'oh, your equipment is faulty'.
But, hey, I'm a programmer, not an engineer, and you guys are the experts, hence asking you! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi If you have connected a phone to the test socket and the dial tone is not there then the responsibility of repair is that of BT thee ring tone is generated at the exchange and infact broadband will function although not at its best speed with only one wire of the pair connected so it does need openreach intervention to resole

The process did not go without a glitch - it took a few attempts to get the app's to sync but after detecting the ones causing an issue and deleting them it works - so far! I have had issues about 50% of the numerous times a new OS is uploaded to this phone and always take the new OS with trepidation. But at least you know there is a 3GS with 6.1 working OK.
I suggest you do a fresh restart to the phone several times - without it being connected to the computer - to see if it gets its act together and starts. I think it will. Hold down the top 'power' button and front round control button until it shuts down - goes blank and dead. Then press the top power button to re-activate - reboot - it.
If that does not work then plug into your itunes computer, navigate in iTunes to see your iPhone and hopefully you will be able to sync it or at least 'restore iPhone' from the 'summary' tab.
If you can not get onto the iphone perhaps you will still be able to sync if in iTunes by going - 'file' - 'devices' - 'sync iphone' or failing that try transfer purchases' and ultimately 'restore from back-up'.
I had technical problems with my old 3GS (suffered a failed wireless antenna) so I took it to an Apple Store and they issued me with a service-replacement/reconditioned phone for a very modest charge. So if worst come to the worst get a new phone that way! -
My iphone 5 went into search mode and I can't place or receive calls or use the internet but my text messages work. Sprint had me do a master reset and my phone doesn't work at all now I can't get it past the activation. Will I have to pay for repairs in store because I didnt get the Apple care plan when I purchased it. Sprint said it may be a phone problem not sure if I should take it to Sprint or Apple...I just need my phone

My iPod nano 3rd generation headphone jack isn't working anymore, when i put my headphones in , the left earphone doesn't work. Does anyone know if this can be fixed ?

The headphones don't work
If your iPod's headphones don't work or have static or garbled audio, try connecting them to any other 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack, like the one on your computer. If the issue with the headphones persists, replace them. For an iPod under warranty, you can order a replacement online. Otherwise, check out the cool headphones at the Apple Online Store. If the issue appears to be with the iPod, try resetting it. If that doesn't work, then restore iPod with the latest iPod software using iTunes 7 or later.

I've installed the iPhone update and now my phone doesn't work. I even chose the restore function. It went through all that and it still just shows the graphic of the usb and an arrow and the itunes icon. Help!
Yes, I connected the phone to my iMac which is the original computer it is backed up on. From iTunes I had no option except to restore, which I did. Still no luck. Still just see the graphic. :-(

Just installed the new modem you say I have to have. Went through the activate scenario and now my phone doesn't work....no dial tone, no nothing. How will you fix that? And, it's the only phone I have!!!

Always start troubleshooting by resetting your gateway or telephony model by pressing the indented reset button on the panel where the cables attach. Plug in a known good wired phone to the L1/L2 jack to bypass the inside wiring and all telephone equipment. If it still doesn't work, then contact Comcast support. -

I used mactheripper to rid my DVDs so I could store them on my mac. Since upgrading to lion x os mactheripper doesn't work. Does anyone know of a free alternative that works with lion x os? Thanks

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always. -
Updated to OS4 and now my phone doesn't work!!
Updated my phone to the new OS4 and now my phone doesn't work. It says I have to do a system restore for it to work. If I do a system restore won't that erase all of my photos? Is there anything I can do so I won't lose any of my infomation? I have tons of photos on my phone. If anyone could help me out, I would be grateful.
When I turn the phone on it shows a picture of the usb cable and the itunes logo. I don't want to do a system restore if I don't have to. I don't want to lose my pictures. HELP Please!!That is one lesson we all have to learn. Backup. Did you backup your iphone regularly? If you did, your photos will backup with it and the restore will put it back on the phone. If you didn't, I am sorry to say that there is probably no way to get those precious moments back. I found that out the hard way years ago. I now learned to backup my computer and iphones at least once a month.

I have just created this account to tell you that nothing would change if you restored your phone.
The first NO SIM nuisance happened just a week ago. Nothing had been done to the phone before that. I pressed HOME + POWER buttons to restart the phone and SIM card was successfully recognized as if nothing had happened. Then I had a lucky week, not reminded of this issue at all.
Today, however, the same problem keeps annoying me. I've used the same method to heal the phone but all I have done seems more like a placebo. So I tried the ultimate solution, restroing it in iTunes.
Ridicuously, the moment I finished basic setup on the newly restored phone, the same NO SIM CARD INSTALLED message poped up.
So IMO, it's not what you should do to erase and restore your phone.
Plus, I called my native carrier and they said no such problems have been submitted. And since my nano SIM card is quite new (three months old), I'm not going to replace it.
I googled this problem and found something on a Hong Kong webpage. The author of that thread points out that there is a flaw in the SIM card tray that prevents the phone from successfully recognizing SIM cards.
And I really hope Apple could probe into this issue and give official solutions other than restarting / restoring the phone like an idiot. -
My iphone 4s has no sound. Music doesn't play and phone doesn't ring. The speaker phone doesn't work either. It only vibrates. Can anyone help? I have tried all possible ways of trying to fix this issue. Someone mentioned that the speaker is bad.

There are two places where vibrations can be set.
One is the Settings > Sounds
The other area is Settings > Notifications

I upgraded to IOS 5.1 and the phone doesn't work right
I upgraded my phone to IOS 5.1 and the phone functionality doesn't work right. If I make a call, once connected I go back to the main menu and can't get to the phone controls (including the ones to hang up). If I receive a call, the wheel comes up, the phone does not ring and I can't answer it. I tried restoring the phone, but that did not work. Does anyone have any ideas?

That definitely seems odd. Since it works fine with Entourage, that would indicate the server is working properly. Additionally, I've tested the SMTP server from here (on a Mac) and am able to connect. I do not have a valid user to send email with, but I can try it if you want to provide me with the one you are trying, temporarily.

Your server only supports CRAM-MD5 and PLAIN authentication. You will need to use plain text authentication. I have never configured mac mail so I do not know how to configure this, you may want to speak with someone a apple support if you have trouble.

I updated Itunes to v 10.5. Mistake!!!! Then updated iOS 5 to my iPhone 4 now my iPhone doesn't work as the applications freezes when trying to restore the phone. Same thing happens with my iPad 2, so now I have two pieces of equipment that are completely non-functional. Can any please tell me what to do? How can I reinstall the previous versions of iTunes, or iOS which were working on my iPhone and on my iPad? I hate iTunes and this has been the last drop that messed up my equipment. Please help me.
