Phone interference

I have a new aluminum MacBook Pro. I notice that if I'm on the phone with a headset and also trying to take down information on my Mac, I get a loud humming tone through my phone's earpiece. Obviously the aluminum is to blame for this, but is there a way to shield the phone from this interference?

Weird! Is the headset cordless or corded? I was thinking in terms of interference from the Wi-Fi radio - you could test that by turning off Airport on the MBP. But, sounds more like a power issue. Have you tried using the grounded plug (the 3-prong cord that can be attached to the AC adapter, versus the 2-prong 'duckhead' plug that connects the whole brick to the outlet)?

How do I detect 2.4Ghz phone interference on a airopeek scan or AP debug/log? What do I look for?

Generally speaking, the captured frame screen will identify corrupted frames as you scroll through. Though not all corrupted frames are caused by interference, most are.
Something like NetStumbler (www.netstumbler.com) or, better yet, Kismet (*nix only) should give you a good reading of local utilization and interfering signals.
Kismet will even identify (in some cases) the nature of the interference.
I also use CommView from TamoSoft (www.tamosoft.com). It's a fairly full-featured wireless "sniffer"-type program, and comparitively speaking, inexpensive (~US$500, with some deals available, and a crippled demo also available). I like it; it has quite a few features for the price, it works well, and supports a pretty good variety of wireless NICs (Atheros chipset preferred, I believe).
Check 'em out and let us know if it fits the need.

  • WRT54GS and wireless phone interference

Up until a few days ago, I had a 2.4 GHz wireless phone system in the house but was getting constant "clicks and taps" on the phone. Since the wired phones operated fine and had no intereference, I figured it was the router. Changing the channels didn't help. Then I read and also was told that I should convert to a DECT 6.0 (1.9GHz) wireless phone system because wireless router signals wouldn't interfere with it. Fortunately the phones are not that expensive and I did that this morning...problem is, the interference is still there. I've upgraded my firmware to the latest via suggestion from a helpful gentleman in Live Chat, and changed the channel to the highest in the range but am still getting the interference.....any ideas?

    1)  This is very odd.  Do you have a DSL or ADSL system?  Or do you use cable or satellite?
    2)  Also, does the problem stop if you unplug the router?
If you have a DSL or ADSL system, then you need "line filters" on all your telephones, fax machines, etc.   All telephone lines need a filter, except the line that goes to the modem.  Your ISP should have supplied you with these line filters.

  • Intermittent broadband, phone interference - and t...

Hi, i have constant problems with my phone and a broadband connection that comes and goes. BT say broadband is picking up interference from my phones. There is no underground cable connection to my house. My phone and broadband come via overhead telephone wire. I have one computer connected via ethernet cable to hub. My hub and hubphone are connected to a dsl filter which is plugged in to socket on wall in living room. I also have one phone connected to dsl filter and plugged into socket in bedroom. I have a third phone connected to socket in study, this does not have a dsl filter. Tried unplugging this one so now study socket no longer in use but same problems still persist. What I can't seem to make anyone at BT understand is that I have three main sockets, I'm sure this is part of the problem.
When I moved here 7 yrs ago there was one main socket (in study). I asked for an engineer to fit broadband. He replaced cable to house with thicker cable. I also asked for extensions to be fitted in living room for PC and bedroom for phone. Instead of running cables inside house from main socket in study, he fitted two new cables to box under the eaves on outside wall of house. These two extra cables run down the outside wall, one goes to bedroom window, thru window frame into bedroom and into a main socket on bedroom wall. the other goes down outside wall of house to living room window, thru window frame into living room and into a main socket on living room wall.
Could having three main sockets be cause of problems? Have put up with this for 7 years now, its getting worse each year, at peak times I lose my connection every few minutes, or I cannot get connected at all. If the phone rings when I'm on the computer I am guaranteed to lose either my broadband connection or the phone will go dead. It can't cope with both!
    Any suggestions?

  • Phone Interference Recording Audio

    Hello Everyone:
I've been recording music with my current setup over a year now and had no problems. Suddenly I now can hear voices (sounds like phone conversation) during my vocal recordings. I thought it might be the mic so I tried it in on an amp in the same area as the Macbook. No voices were heard. Also, when I have my guitar plugged into the mic port on the Macbook I have a weird humming interference. I have to suspect that this relates to the Macbook. Should I bring it in as it is under warranty? It seems as though it is intercepting phone signals. If not should I be calling the FCC to report some haywire electronics from the neighbors?
    Thanks,
    GrandPrix132

I've tried two sets of guitar wires and had the same result. I've also tried both cords in an amp and everything sounded prefect. As for the voices, I have to suspect that something is intercepting a phone call. I can actually hear the person talking. What is weird is if I put my hand on the mic the voices get louder and more clear (as if I'm functioning as an antenna). I have to suspect this has to do with the Macbook. Everything else has worked properly in everything except for my Macbook. The only thing I question is the converter which takes the mic/guitar plug and converts it into the small mic port. Could this really be intercepting the signals? I have to this chance is slim.

  • Hub4 and phone interference

Have been using Hub 4 for about two weeks and our wireless phones have been working ok. Today there is interference on the phone and when I use it it disconnects the Hub. I've read that Hub can use two frequencies my guess is these have been switched hence the phone problem. Can I manually select the Hub frequency and if so how?

Have you tried moving your phone base unit further away from the homehub?
See this link about turning off wireless on the homehub.

  • Best way to eliminate or at least lessen a cell phone interference noise in a video

We shot an interview the other day and even though we normally remember to tell people to turn off their cell phones, we forgot that day. Right in the middle of a good response we hear the annoying sound that cell phones cause with wireless mics. It only lasts a few seconds, but really takes away from what the interviewee is saying. Is there a way to lessen that noise or even get rid of it altogether?
    Thanks.

This might work for you, depending on how intrusive the interference sound is, and what the other frequencies in the audio file are doing.

  • Mobile phone interference when I watch some channe...

I am starting to get really frustrated with the amount of interference I get from my mobile phone being used either texting or phoning when sky sports and some other channels are being watched. Every household must have a mobile but I dont see many others complaining only about the reception they get on sky sports. It does happen at other times but can only imagine its our next door neighbours on their phone as the interference lasts about 10mins at a time when they are there. I have checked signal strength and it is high and there is no problem with transmitter signal as I have checked that with Sandy Heath too. I only have my Bt box dvd player and hub by the tv. Anyone got any ideas??????

Try covering the cables to your BT Vision box with tin foil (Aerial, Scart/ HDMI & Ethernet) which should radiate some of the interference.
Maybe it's something to do with something in your property?

  • Fax and phone interference

The fax test says "not using cord supplied with printer,"  but I am using that cord as directed.
Problem--incoming phone calls are triggering the fax signal, and we can't hear the voice when we pick up after two rings.   How to separate the voice calls and the fax trigger?
    Thanks!

Hi @Daadjim , and welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're having issues with your fax cable. I would like to help!
I have a couple of questions before we start:
Are you using an analog line, or a VoIP phone line?
    Who is your phone provider?
Is the fax cable plugged direct to a wall jack, or into a modem or router?
I would recommend removing the fax cable, and starting with a power reset on the printer. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I would then suggest updating your firmware:
HP Officejet Pro 8610/8615 Firmware Update
After the update, reconnect your fax line.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • Main/hub-phone interference?

I set up BT Broadband a year ago and it works perfectly.
Recently I decided to activate the additional phone line, and plugged a phone into the hub socket. Again, it works perfectly,
    BUT
all incoming calls on the main phone also cause the hub phone to ring. As long as no one picks up the hub phone, the main phone works exactly as normally. The hub phone otherwise works as intended - I can dial out, and it receives incoming calls without ringing the main phone.
I had intended using the additional line as an independent phone in the granny annexe, but this is obviously going to be useless because of this interaction between the two lines.
I have tried several different phones, all modern, and it makes no difference. I have also tried several different filters, both the one that came with the kit, and others.

Try here it should let you set up what rings when but I find the hub still shows main calls as missed even though it dont ring and the main may ring with the hub all seems a bit daft to me

  • Airport Express and phone interference

When my home phone rings or we make a call, our wireless internet connection (airport express) disconnects. Has someone already had this issue? if yes, is there any solution to resolve it?

The best solution is to get rid of your 2.4 GHz cordless phones. They operate at the same frequency as the wireless network created by the AirPort Express (AX).
Another possible solution is to set the AX to use another channel. Try changing the channel until you find a channel that works or you run out of channels.

    Hello Al,
I have a feeling it's going to be too difficult, perhaps even for Sound Soap. I think Sound Soap learns a frequency level of the noise you want cut, and it suppresses that.
I've been able to manually do this using FCE's parametric equaliser (with a bit of frequency calculation) for general background hum (like 50Hz electricity hum), but I fear the mobile phone interference contains too many frequencies.
Anyway, worth a shot at posting this query in this forum.
    cheers,

  • A USB internet connection

I know everyone is having the same problem, with airport virtually dropping the internet unless you are in the same exact room as the router. I've dealt with this for the past 8 months, but I"m really tired of it.
Is there a USB connectability i can use? I went to Best Buy and they said there was nothing compatible. I just REALLY want to not have to think about how close I have to be to a router. I use my laptop in a few different locations, so I don't want to have to think about what kind of router it is.
    Thanks!

+Maybe your 2007 model is fine, but the 2006s are not.+
Hmmm, that's strange, as I know a 15-year old whose MacBook also recently went out of AppleCare, it's been used really really hard, it's always connected to the internet only via wireless, yet it's never had a network problem - but of course the Tiger OS X version software was kept up to date and a password protected network used at home (although I don't know what kind of wireless networks are used away from home, other than a school wireless system).
For sake of comparison, 15-year olds don't usually have any authority to access and administer networks, so those home and school networks tend to be very stable, although many home networks are not particularly powerful. In addition, in this instance there is little potential interference from wireless phones, which may well be an issue where a lot of people live.
I had some portable phone interference problem from close neighbors myself, and the only thing I could do to combat it was to change the channel on which my network was broadcasting. I had to change it several times until one particular neighbor moved, plus finally I upgraded my wireless network's router to the new "n" speed which gives me more channels. Now, instead of choosing my channel, this router is setup to automatically use the best channel.
I've never had an interference problem when I've used public networks, such as those at restaurants, cafes, motels, stores or offices. Some of them I've used have been password protected, or I'd have to log-on, but mostly the ones I use just allow anyone to connect.
