Phone lost power after thunder storm in Seattle area

I was shopping in Fred Meyer when the power in the store went out, right after a thunderstorm. I figured I'd use the Flashlight app on my iPhone (Edge/2.0), but noticed an odd icon on the phone with a thin slice of red in the battery:
power plug + arrow + lightning bolt
My phone had lost all power right after the thunderstorm. Has anyone else experienced this? I spoke to a friend who said he had to recharge his phone yesterday, but he doesn't remember the time. For me, it was around 11:32 am.
The phone was not plugged into anything, it was in my pocket. (And know, I didn't go any further and try to see if the Flashlight app would work).

It doesn't take a direct lightning strike to fry delicate electronics like a computer or phones.   And surge protectors do not provide any protection against lightning whatsoever.
The lightning strike could have been miles away, it would not have to be right at your building.  There could even have been a ground strike in your neighborhood that has no physical evidence you could see.  And it wouldn't even have to be a ground strike - cloud-to-cloud strikes can generate as much EMP or EMI as a ground strike.
The EMP/EMI induced by lighning could also have come in via your phone line or internet connection, not just the power line.  Even the ground line can end up being a conductor.

I bought an iphone 5 in Sept at Best Buy, after a few hours it lost power, so I returned it. Even the new one lost power after a few hours if left on. I do not have bluetooth on. I must always have it shut off now until I go to use it. Any suggestions? Is this normal?

  • Fail to boot after thunder storm

Early yesterday morning a sever thunder and lightening storm came through.  My iMac was off and attached to a surge protector.  today, i went to boot the iMac up and found that it would not boot.  I also noticed that my panasonic phone system was not working properly (digitial phones are not functional).
the building was NOT hit by lightening nor can I find any nearby location that was, but we did lose power for several hours while the power company sorted it out.
i brought the iMac to the local Mac store and tech support tere says it is getting power, but fails to continue the boot cycle which they think is either the logic board or video card, but will not know more until tomorrow.
Has anyone ever heard of a "none" lightening strike fried a computer?

  • MBP Frozen on Startup-Was reinstalling OS, lost power during a storm :(

    Hey everyone,
I have a 2007 Macbook Pro that's giving me some trouble.
    BACKGROUND
    1. The battery on this thing is dead—in fact, it became bloated and no longer fit into the casing. Before this issue, I was using it without a battery and simply plugging it in.
    2. As a result, when the power source was removed (kicked out, etc). the laptop would simply shut down.
    3. As far as I know, it was running the most updated version of software prior to this incident.
    ISSUE
    Here's what happened:
I was updating the computer to iOS 10.5 (Snow Leopard—I bought the OS as soon as it came out, so it's an early version). It was plugged into a wall, and was about 97% finished (I kid you not) and the power went out suddenly.
Since then, it's been stuck on the grey bootup screen. I hear the bootup sound, screen goes to grey, up pops an Apple logo, the loading circle, and then...it stays there. The loading circle just chases its tail. I've tried letting it sit there for at least four hours—no change.
And to make things more interesting, the Snow Leopard CD is stuck in the optical drive.
    FIXES
Here's what I've tried so far:
    Fix attempt 1 (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=151364)
    • Restart your Mac holding down "Command(the Apple key)+S" key to enter 'Single user mode'.
    • Type "fsck -f", and hit return.
    • Once complete type "reboot" and hit return to reboot you Mac back in to OS X as normal.
RESULT: None that I can see. Still sits on startup screen.
    *OTHER INFORMATION*
I have external firewire drives, but don't have the OS installed on them for two reasons.
One, I use them as photography archives and am unsure if I would need to reformat the drive completely in order to install the OS.
Two, the CD is stuck inside the Macbook Pro.
    *MY QUESTIONS*
    1. What are some other fixes I can try? Please post links to pertinent threads or write below. Thanks.
    2. I would like to try booting from an external hard drive. Can somebody tell me how to do this without wiping my external drives?
    3. Is there a way to remove the OS install disk, like holding down a certain key combination or entering in code from Single User Mode?
    Thanks everybody.

First, try booting while holding down the option key. If no luck, see below.

10.6, Snow Leopard. It's from the installation disc
The optical drive was working prior to this, because it was installing the OS just fine. It was just about finished, only 1-3% to go and that's when the power went out.
That's what I was wondering. Ok, normally I wouldn't think an SMC reset would be relevant here, but I wonder if something is different due to no battery.
    Try this:
    Shut down
Disconnect the power adapter from the computer
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds
    Release the power button
    Reconnect the power adapter
Press the power button to turn on the computer and see if it boots
If not, repeat the process, but this time hold down the c key while booting
If not, repeat the process, but this time hold down the option key while booting

  • Why won't my airport express turn on after thunder storm ?

Why won't my airport express turn on?

There are three Airport resets, soft, hard and factory default.  It would probably be beneficial if you tried each one in sequence.  Actually, you could jump to the factory default reset if you don't mind reconfiguring from scratch.
If none of the above helps, you may well have a harware problem.

Is there any app for phone auto start after swithced off??

Are you looking for an app which will startup the Z10 at a specified time?
I don't know of one. I have a feeling once OS 10.2 is available you'll see apps such as this.

As we were instructed I attempted to download the new Adobe Cloud to replace Adobe CS6 as it is about to expire.  It had been downloading for about an hour when I lost power due to a storm. It was only off 20 minutes. When it came back up it had stopped because my internet of course was also off. Now I have tried to do it again and it tells me “that number has already been approved and uploaded” However, it has not because I do not have the cloud programs yet. I still have my CS6 but I am not sure what to do from here. Can you assist with this please?

After admittedly only a quick read the one thing you don't say is how you are trying to make this move.  Most people with moving library issues do it the wrong way.  Plenty of web sites tell you how to do it the wrong way.
If the iTunes application is started before the drive with the library is fully mounted and awake iTunes will revert back to the internal drive.

  • I can not get my phone to sign in to my wi fi. I used to, then I lost power to the internet and now it won't. Al other devices will.

I can not get my phone to sign in to my wi fi. I used to, then I lost power to the internet and now it won't. All other devices will.

Try forgetting the Wi-Fi network and then joining it again, just tap Settings >  Wi-Fi > the arrow next to your network > Forget this Network, then join the network again.
If that doesn't do it, take a look at this Apple doc -> iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections

    Hi Krisunita,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Try using these steps to stop Lost Mode from iCloud.com:
Stop Lost Mode or change your contact info
Sign in to icloud.com/#find with your Apple ID (the one you use with iCloud). If you’re using another iCloud app, click the app’s name at the top of the iCloud.com window, then click Find My iPhone.
Click All Devices, then select the device that’s in Lost Mode.
Click Lost Mode, then change the information or click Stop Lost Mode.

My I phone is restart after some time. Some times find out its off then if I press Home + Power button then again re-start. Some time after coming apple logo it take auto restart ...display become blue color. I have restored through I tunes and got I cloud backup. But stll have same problem.

Try once again to restore using iTunes, but this time without using a backup, to make sure that this is not software related.
If the phone still restarts on it's own, get it checked, this might then be hardware related after all.

After updating my I phone to io7 my phones battery power instantly halfed I have switched off all back ups etc etc and reset my entire phone but no difference any iseas

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then was new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

hi i had the same problem today when i updated my itunes to latest version. however, i have just found my songs in the 'itunes media' folder. this was accessed through 'my music'  then keep clicking through until you find itunes media and all my library songs were in there and i then just added these files to my library and all were restored however, i have lost all my playlists but at least my 700 songs are back. very dissapointed with apple that they have let this happen with their latest update, the previous version was miles better than this one . hope you find them. stevo

  • HT202157 I brought a new apple TV after it was going thru its update, it lost power?  I tried the reboot with the down arrow and menu button, but no love. Is this unit busted?

I brought a new apple tv.  I tried to update it. When it finished, it lost power.  I tried to reset it with the down arrow key and the menu button, but no love. Does this mean that i should take it back to the store?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)
