Phone needs restoring, but how do I transfer important files before?

iTunes cannot recognize my phone and says that it needs to be restored. The problem is that I have important iTalk recordings on my phone that will be erased if I restore it (I think). The files are too big to be emailed/dropboxed to my computer. Is there any way I can get them on my computer if my phone does not show up on iTunes??

When I plug it in, it usually says Jennifer's iPhone and all of my data (apps/music/contents of the phone show up). When I plug it in now, it says Jennifer's iPhone for a few seconds, then a message pops up that iTunes cannot recognize the phone, and the phone becomes "iPhone" instead of "Jennifer's iPhone." The only "iPhone" options are restore, and summary screen. No other tabs are available to peruse.
I am trying to sync with the computer that I ususally sync with. Itunes understands that there is a phone plugged in, but my phone cannot communicate with itunes......

You need to put all of your info on your computer and then sync it to iphone.

Previous versions let me drag file in Itunes to Ipad and files appeared under Ibook and then I could move them to an appropriate collection title. The interface appears to have changed in the latest ITunes version and I am not sure what the proper procedure is.

King_Penguin - Thanks it worked perfectly. I had my pdf files copied into ITunes on my PC but when I clicked on a pdf file to copy it I thought the sidebar would appear with my IPAD name and then I would drag it over. I didn't realize that I needed to click-and start dragging it towards the left-hand side for the sidebar to appear. It worked like a charm - THANKYOU!!!

Restore from old iPhone backup can past all data including messages to your new iPhone. Or you can resfer to this iPhone 4/4S SMS to iPhone 5 transfer tutorial. It shows you how to transfer messages only.

My phone went completely dead and will not turn back on. The only pic it is showing is the USB cable and the itunes logo above. Upon going to itunes, it tells me my phone needs restored. However, I'm going to lose all my pictures of my children. I am literally sick about this! I have Icloud but don't believe anything was ever backed up since I was rarely around Wifi. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Sorry, but the only way to get back into the device is to restore it.
If you do have an iCloud backup (or iTunes backup), you can restore from it once you have the device active again. Without a backup, yes, you are going to loose what is on the device - this sort of unexpected error is exactly why backups are so important and need to be done regularly.

I have a similar problem: I used to transfer .pdf files between a WinXP laptop and a WM6.1 Samsung Omnia i900, and the converter worked OK. I read the files on the mobile device with Adobe Reader for PPC 2.0 without problems, with correct resizing of the screen . Now I changed my Laptop to a Win7 64bit T410, the files are tranferred with no conversion and the screen reading is messy and very, very somall, with no way to resize it to fit the screen.
