Gaston.x did not reply, but I would like to change from (xxx) xxx-xxxx to xxx-xxx-xxxx. It has been many years and many versions that I have had it the same but I could have sworn it was an Address Book or Contacts preference and now I cannot find it in Contacts or in iCloud (other than the "automatically format?" setting). That of course is easy to disable and then type things myself, but in any case I wanted the all hyphen format.
I have a feeling it is now gone -- as are some other features in other products -- and now if you choose U.S. you get parentheses and no other choice, and it's all driven by iCloud.

TS2755 Updated to ios 7, contacts that I have texted are all messed up, just get a phone number or part of a phone number listed when I text, no name. Not even sure my texts have gone through, no response from recipient.

I have updated to ios 7 as has my daughter. Now when I send her a text all that shows up is her phone number or part of the number, not her name. I'm not even sure she is getting the texts because she hasn't responded at all. She is usually very prompt. Is this a glitch with the new ios?

Actually you are not texting if she has an iOS device. Is the balloon the typing is in blue? Check your Settings>Messages and see if it is activated. You might want to call your daughter and ask her the same thing. Check her contact in your contacts app and see if the number is correct and everything is still there.
Then go into Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. This will not affect data. After that, if iMessage is activated, then try sending her a message.

Wrong Phone Number Listed when connected to desktop Software (and a few other probs)

I just downloaded the New Desktop Software. When I connect my Tour, it displays the wrong phone number.
I got this phone from a friend. It has been wiped and all. I wonder why it displays her phone number instead of mine. My phone calls out and recieves calls and messages just fine. It aggreavates me though. below is the screenshot of it. please help

TS4268 How do I find what apple ID I listed my phone number to? I do not have my Iphone, but I still have the same number.

My phone got stolen, and instead of getting a new Iphone, I went to droid. After about a week I realized that I wasn't able to recieve texts from anyone with an Iphone due to my Imessage still being "active" on the servers. Heres the hard part.... I do not know what apple ID I listed my phone to becuase my normal apple ID does not have my phone number listed. I still have the same number, so is there any way I can just see what apple ID my phone number is listed to.

IMessage is registered to my e-mails but my phone number is not listed.

I want to enable Text Message Forwarding but my iMessage doesn't have my phone number listed like it has my e-mails. iMessage currently works but I wish to have my text messages forwarded as well. Everything is up to date.

In this Original Post you list only an iPhone.
If it is this device that is not listing the iPhone Number then you need to sort that bit out first.
Remove th Apple ID.
Place in Airplane Mode for two Minutes.
Return to the Settings > Messages and confirm the Number Verifies before proceeding.
If a Mac is involved Send a test iMessages (which will be from the iPhone Number only) to the Apple ID (Mac).
Return the iMessage.
Add the Apple ID to the iPhone.
Restart the Mac version to see the Pop ups saying what the iPhone is Using and Accept them.
The Mac version should now show the iPhone number if that is what you meant.
Set the Send From IDs on both Mac and iPhone.
EDIT to lose a plural that shouldn't have been.

Problem with iMessage contacts being separated by phone number and email

Hi all, sorry if this thread is a duplicate of another, I've seen some that are similar but none seem to match the exact situation I'm having.
Me and 3 other friends have a group iMessages thread where we talk to each other.
We each have several devices: ie. I have a Macbook Air and an iPhone 5S, one has a Macbook, an iPhone 4, and an iPad, etc etc. Essentially we all have a mix of devices which we can use to read the thread, all using the same Apple ID and with our phone number added.
The problem is, every so often and for no discernible reason, someone will send a message and it'll start a new thread: this usually happens on my iPhone but occasionally it happens on my Macbook. Sometimes, what has become 2 threads on my phone will be only one thread on my Macbook, and vice versa. Same applies to my friends. However, sometimes what has become 2 threads for them is still only one thread for someone else, as though some of us have gone "out of sync".
When you compare the contacts in the 2 threads, they are IDENTICAL (can't stress this enough, the contacts themselves have not been duplicated), however when I look at the same contact from one thread, their phone number will be highlighted in blue. In the other thread, their email address will be highlighted in blue.
Therefore the problem seems to be that devices are unable to bring together an iMessage sent from a contact's phone with one sent from their email. If the information for both email and phone number are correctly filled in for a contact, why can Messages/iMessage not realise it is the same person and bring them together?
The problem is, sometimes a message sent from the same device will first be sent from the phone number, then the next will be from the email address (or rather, everyone else's devices are seeing it that way, they're not doing anything different than usual, just typing in the thread and pressing send). Its as though the device is choosing one then the other, seemingly at random, and iMessage doesn't seem to be able to add them to the already existing thread but instead creates a new one as the "source' is different. Is this behaviour intended? Surely it can't be.
Is this something to do with the "You can be reached by iMessage at" setting in iOS. One of us needs to be reached by both his email and phone number so we can't just all turn off the email on our phones/iPads for example.
Is this a known problem? Is there something we can do about it? Is it ever going to be fixed?
We've tried other messaging programs but they're just not as well integrated as Messages, and obviously being able to switch between my phone and my Macbook is hugely convenient.
Any help would be much appreciated, we're now at the stage where we have 2 iMessage threads and a backup LINE group chat for when things are completely unfollowable due to every other message going to the duplicate thread.

When you go to Settings>Messages do you see your Apple ID at the top? Also, when you go to Settings>Messages>Receive At do you see both your email address and your phone number listed?

How do you stop sms messages automatically being sent to an email address instead of a phone number?

I have noticed that sometimes (particularly when sending an sms to multiple people) my iphone 4s will send the message to peoples email addresses. This happens despite there being a phone number listed on the contact. You would have thought that an sms would automatically send to a phone number if there is one available for the contact, but instead it is sending the sms to an email address without warning. This results in me being charged for an mms and the recipient not recieving the text at their phone number. It happens when sending messages to both iphone users and non iphone users.
Does anyone know a way of fixing this?

I think its fixed. I had to sign iMessages in on my Apple ID, but then deselect my email addresses to make it behave the way it should. Now if I could get iMessage to only send response alerts to the last device I used, instead of late night texts going to every device I own in the house and waking everyone up.
For some reason, the free iCloud address I automatically received (when Apple was trying to force people to leave Mac.com) is "hardwired" into iMessage. People were also getting texts from that address even though I was on my phone. I tried to delete it but iOS tells me I can't. I don't use that address, I won't ever use it, too bad I can't make it go away.

If you have iCloud Keychain set up on another device, you can update your SMS number via that other device in order to verify your new device. If you do not have another device available or you do not have an SMS capable number, you will need to contact Apple for identity verification in order to bypass that phone number authentication. See below.

Make sure that your phone number can receive SMS messages. You can do this by asking someone to send you a text message.

My message center in settings shows the wrong phone number, how do I change it

Under settings, messages, send and receive. The phone number listed is my husbands number. How can I change it to mine? It was originally listed under my number.

Go slightly deeper into the settings. You should be looking in Settings>FaceTime>Send and Receive at>You can be reached by iMessages at.
If your phone number is no longer listed as one of the options in that setting, you may have to turn off messages on all of your iOS devices and start all over again in order to make both phone numbers available and accessible for FaceTime and Messages.

When I receive text messages, it displays phone number instead of contact name.

I updated to iOS 5 on my iPhone 4 over the weekend. Since updating to iOS 5, all of my text messages show up with a phone number listed instead of the contacts name. I checked my contact info and all the contact information is listed and the numbers under the contact are correct. Has anyone else had this issue and if so have you discovered any resolutions?

Following a tip from another poster, I was able to fix the issue (temporarily).
This worked for me on Verizon.
I dialed *228 on my Verizon phone. I pressed "1" to activate it over the air. I then went into task manager and killed all the running apps.. Waited a few minutes.
The next text I got displayed the number correctly!.. Until I rebooted, that is.
Ps. PLEASE, call Apple and speak with a senior engineer on this. They can't fix it if they don't know it's a problem! (800) MY-IPHONE

Make sure your iPad is using the same Apple ID as your phone in Settings>Messages>Send & Receive. If it is, and you still don't see your phone number listed under "You can be reached by iMessage At", tap the ID, sign out, then after a minute or so, sign back in.

Using more than one phone number on single iPhone for iMessage?

Is it possible to intentionally have more than one phone number listed under Settings > Messages > Send & Receive? I know I've heard of 'glitches' where more than one phone number is shown accidentally and how that is solved (signing out of iMessage and then back in), but if you want to intentionally have more than one phone number listed there (say, the phone number of your own device and also the phone number of your work-related iPhone), is there a method? I'm leaning toward the answer of 'no', but I'm wanting to double check.
