Phone sockets in other rooms

Please can you advise the what cost is to have two extra sockets in two other rooms in my home.  I do not want another line.

I think BT charge £127.99 for the engineer to visit and £90 (ish) per extension socket they install.
You can always ask a local electrician or telecoms engineer (look in the phonebook for some close to you) and you may be able to 'haggle' a better price, or as suggested try a DIY kit from a local building supllier (B&Q etc) or by a cordless phone with mulitple handsets.
I run a twin set of phones from 1 sockets and have no problems. I just use 2 electric sockets to power them ;-)

  • Using phone extensions or more than 1 phone socket...

    Dear All,
Your help would be much appreciated.
I am currently with o2 broadband and am looking to go with infinity but I need the following question answered:
My master socket is in the living room which the infinity router and modem will be installed. I have a satellite receiver in the living room which needs Internet connection through an Ethernet cable. Now I have my PS3 upstairs in my room which has no phone line socket so I am using a telephone extension lead from another room next to mine which has a phone socket into my room, to connect my PS3 hard wired to the modem which I bring upstairs to my room to play my PS3 on, how would this work with the set up of infinity router and modem?
BT say they can only enable one phone socket in the house which is the master socket. So the ps3 will have to be connected wireless but for online gaming wireless connections are not that good.
Is it possible to have more than 1 phone socket enabled? Master socket and the upstaires bed room socket with a phone extention to my room?
Or can I get a new phone line socket installed into my room?

If you are not using the telephone extension for any telephone appliances eg for just the PS3, why not use a long ethernet cable (or Homeplugs/Wireline adaptors) from one of the routers ethernet sockets instead?
For instance you can find such cables here.

  • Can you get multiple phone socket working with BT ...

    Hi,
So I recently had a BT engineer visit, he connected the phone line on the main socket then left. A week later they turned my BT infinity on.
It works great but the main socket is in a different room to my office. I have a phone socket in my office right next ot my pc. But when i plug my router into this socket it fails to produce an internet connection.
Is there a way to get multiple phone sockets working? I would like to move my hub so it is in my office but the socket isnt giving off internet.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks.

You need to identify the cables connected to the removable faceplate beside the red arrow - these are the extension cables to other sockets in the house.
Connected from here you will get voice only - not data.
If there is more than 1 cable you need to identify the one to your office, remove it and fit the cables to the yellow arrow connections.
You only need to connect the cables connected to 2 & 5 (there may be more connected to the faceplate)
guide on this link  although it does not tell you the 2/5 connection order - I don't think polarity matters - but someone with more knowledge can advise.
A potential problem you may have is if there are other extension sockets connected to your office socket you use (and not the faceplate) as these then are not suitable  for phone - only data.
With DECT phones and the need for just one basestaion not really a probem nowadays but you need to know where each socket in your house is connected from, and what you want to use it for.
If you have any BB problems, BT will also insits you plug the router/modem back into the master socket for all testing.
EDited to add - a krone insertion tool is best for inserting the cables to the socket and has a nice pick to disconnect also. They are easy to use - search you tube for a video.

  • Multi room dvr not working in other rooms

My mr dvr is not working in any of my other rooms. It has never worked. I just don't have the time to sit on the phone with tech support.
I have 3 other sd stb in other rooms and I have programs recorded on the dvr that are not in H. So shouldn't i be able to watch these in the other rooms?
When I look at my Fios TV info online it states this "Your STB record cannot be found."
    any help would be appreciated
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It is listed on my bill under TV additional services. " home media dvr- high definition" is this just for the actual DVR unit? Do I have to pay for the unit and then pay an additional amount for special programing? If so why wouldn't I have opted for the regular DVR instead of the Multi room dvr? I guess I will be spending most of my night on the phone with verizon!!!!
    thanks for your help.

  • Windows 8.1 finds printer in the other room but I have all sharing disabled.

I have everything I can see disabled for sharing. Everything in:
    -Start > PC settings
-When I go to Start and type in 'homegroup', 'Network', 'workgroup', etc.
    -This Computer > Network
-All file explorer folders and drives.
I think W8.1 installed like this.
I have a printer that's like 15 years old and worked fine in XP but couldn't get it to work with W8.1. I made a thread and we tried basically everything but I gave up and am getting a new printer. I'm waiting from the manufacturer if there's a universal
driver or if it definitely can't be used with W8.
But anyway, when I tried to print, Windows couldn't find the 15 year old printer and asked to 'install a printer?" When I hit yes, it tries to install the printer on a computer in the other room (I know because of the printer name). That printer IS
on a workgroup and can be printed from other computers here and most likely without a password or anything (but never printed from my PC using XP that I noticed).
I have "sharing and the ability to see other computers and devices on this network" turned off, so how did I
find the device? Is it because the device is set to share without a password and windows thinks it's doing me a favor by allowing me to see it despite it saying I have even seeing other devices blocked?
I don't want to share anything at all to the network/workgroup/homegroup. I installed W8.1 about a week ago and haven't retreived my XP data from my external because of possible unaware sharing.
And, I'm pretty sure the workgroup here is called WORKGROUP, and even though I don't think I'm sharing on it, it says I'm on WORKGROUP under my 'System', so I also changed that to random jumbled letters. Is that an extra step to insure no sharing or actually
prone to more accidental sharing, or it doesn't matter?
    Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I might have figured it out sorta.
I could never get my Dell XPS 630 motherboard's onboard NIC to work with XP. Instead, I plugged my internet wire into a SMC1211TX add-on card that has a built-in driver and always worked.
In device manager, SMC1211TX is called "Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC". Device Manager shows the onboard NIC as "NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller" and it works with Windows 8.1.
I'm %98 sure that both cards don't have wireless capabilities. Although this site calls the SMC1211TX a wireless card and I read people installing drivers to make it wireless but I'm not sure if that requires additional hardware: [link]
All I can search out is people trying to add wireless to the Dell XPS 630's NVIDIA NIC and people saying that it does not come with wireless. I can't seem to find an exact model # for the onboard NVIDIA NIC to see if it has Ethernet, but according to this,
    it has Ethernet [link]
Someone mentioned "Is the printer on Ethernet, or is it connected directly to a PC? If it's on Ethernet, anything on the local network can see it."
The printer has a fax line from the wall phone jack, power cords, and the data cable's USB'd to the computer in the other room. The printer has Wireless enabled. The computer that the printer's plugged into might have an Ethernet card (I checked network
controllers in Device Manager etc on that PC and didn't see the word Ethernet, but it might be). So, I turned off the computer in the other room that the printer's connected to, but I still found the printer when I tried to print when using my Realtek RTL8139/810x
Family Fast Ethernet NIC. So I'm thinking that maybe since that NIC has Ethernet that I'm also getting wireless by being connected to a wireless router and it picks up the wireless printer? And that this still doesn't breach me sharing anything from my computer
    because everything's private right?
I also plugged into the onboard NVIDIA NIC. I tried to print and see if the onboard card would find the printer in the other room and it did; however, when I tried a few more times, it wouldn't find the printer anymore, so I thought maybe this card doesn't
have Ethernet and that's why I could still find the printer with the other Ethernet card. But then even after rebooting a few times, I could still find the printer with the NVIDIA NIC with the computer in the other room turned off, so I'm thinking that maybe
the NVIDIA NIC also has Ethernet? Or that maybe it doesn't and it only tried to install the printer because the info was cached from using the Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC?
Also worth mentioning that the first thing I did after installing 8.1 was download drivers (chipset first then BIOS then one or two others). The only chipset driver from Dell was for XP so I tried it anyway but it didn't install. The BIOS flash seemed to work.
I tried their automated assistant to find and install drivers but it just showed the same XP drivers.

  • How to identify the master phone socket

I am having a wireless broadband hub installed this week. Bt informed me the connection will be to the master phone socket but I am not sure which one this is. Where the phone line enters the house it goes into a junction box and then appears to split but it is difficult to trace the wiring. Is there an easy way to identify the "master" socket?

If Bt engineer coming to fit hub then he will have no problem locating the master socket - that's he job
Is it infinity that you are getting?

  • PHONE SOCKET NEEDS TO BE MOVED

I would like to have one of my phone sockets moved or a replacement put in as I can't reach the socket where it is at the moment if I need to change my phone etc.  What would the engineer charge to do this and how much, how do you order as all that is mentioned on the BT site is ordering a new phone line!

Welcome to the forum. If it's the master socket it has to be done by Openreach; call 0800 800 150 and get it done for about £130, roughly the same hourly rate as Bill Gates. If it's an extension you can use Yellow Pages.

  • No Master Phone Socket.

Setting up the new router when I noticed there is no master phone socket instead there is a extension socket which then connects to very old looking cream coloured oval plastic box which then connects to the main BT phone wire. Since I believe this oval box belong to the property of BT , I need EE to contact BT Open reach to send engineer to fit a master phone socket as I'm concerned over the safety of this very old oval plastic box and the wiring within it has become fragile, as such I believe this will negatively impact the effectiveness and efficency of the broadband whilst also being a potential risk and as such EE and BT have a duty of care for it customers. I've attempted many times over phone and by email to resolve this issue without any resolution.

How do know the single phone socket is not a master? All houses are fitted with 1 master socket and 0 or more extensions. Can you post a picture of its internals? The oval box is just a Block Terminal connecting the external to the internal wiring and is BT's property as you say. They are fairly reliable.
Is this for ADSL BB or Fibre?

  • Which phone socket will the BT engineer upgrade?

I have two phone sockets in my house one is an extension which connects to the router. Will the engineer upgrade the one which connects to the router or the one which connects to the socket that connects to the router?

HE can convert either one you want. My main socket is downstairs but I had my upstairs socket made to the master socket with the VDSL front plate.

  • Connecting router to phone socket

    Hi,
I recently ordered BT broadband. I also had to order a phone line, even though I don't use one. While ordering I indicated that I would like to use my own router.
Today my line was activated and I was expecting a package from BT with everything but the router (e.g. all other necessary cables, a modem, etc.).
However, I got nothing, except for my own router, my own ethernet cables and a BT Openreach wall socket. That's it. Now I have trouble connecting the two.
I've called support and after a maze of menus I finally spoke to a semi-tech person who wanted to send me ethernet cables. I have plenty of my own ethernet cables! But they don't fit into BT socket.
Can anyone advise what to do, how to connect the router (a regular cisco home router) and the phone socket. I'm completely frustrated, I have been waiting about 2 weeks for my internet, and now I'm paying for something I can't use
I'm currently connected to a neigbour's open wifi with hardly any signal.
    I'll appreciate any help
    thanks
    Matt

If its normal ADSL broadband that you have, then you need an ADSL modem or an ADSL modem/router combination, like the BT Home hub.
A standard router with a WAN (Ethernet) connection is no good.

  • Moving the master phone socket

I want to move the master phone socket from downstairs to upstairs. The phone cable on the outside wall runs from upstairs, so I figure this shouldn't be too much of a problem, but is there anywhere I can find more information about this? (like how much it might cost, how long it would take, etc.)
    Thanks.
    Solved!

you would need to contact bt sales and get them to
place the order to move the master socket they should be able to give you a date for the work to be done the cost will be around £130.00

Yes, you can use the old iPhone as an iPod touch.

  • Sometimes when I am trying to make a call, I can't hear the connecting tone in my phone, but the other party's phone is ringing. It happens every now and then (not everytime), I wonder if you guys face this problem too.

sometimes when I try to make a call to someone, I can't hear the connecting tone im my phone, but the other party's phone is ringing.  I have to end the call again and make another attempt.  The connecting tone could only be heard after I made a redial.  I have checked with many friends on different telcos, and they told me they also face this kind of problems.  Can this problem be rectified?

I went back to the service provider twice and they reactivated my phone the first time and the second time the tech rebooted the phone and told me how to tell if it was on my end or the other person's end.  Of course it didn't happen at the store, but right after I left I called a family member (on my plan) and the phone did this problem. It can be frustrating.  The cell towers are strong in my area, so it can't be that.  My next stop is to an Apple store but I am waiting until after Christmas.  I can't deal with the shopping crowds!!!
