Phone will not backup in order to perform iOS 5 update

I have been trying dice 1pm EST today to update my iPhone and it will not complete backup. It started once and set for over an hour and then just stopped and it has currently been on the " backing up iPhone" screen for almost 2 hours and it's not even a fourth of the way complete. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do?!?

This was what fixed it for me:
In windows 7, click on your start menu, go to accessories, right click on the command prompt icon and choose "run as administrator".  Once it opens, type in the following command...
netsh winsock reset
hit enter and it should say something like winsock reset successful now reboot your computer.

    Unfortunately yes, though technology would never move on if it kept to older standards and did not strive to do more.
    The app store always gives you the option to use a previous version of the app IF it is available for your device.
    Sorry but you are stuck without new hardware.

    Did you try to delete the mail account, restart the phone and add the mail account again?

    If you get the error "Backup not successful" and you've tried deleting the last backup and trying to back up manually without luck, try the following test:   Go to...
    Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap your device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options.  Turn off all apps from backup and then do a manual backup.  If that doesn't work, then this post will not help.  If the backup works, then go back to the app list and turn some on and try another backup.  If successful, keep repeating these steps.  If it fails at some point, then try to zero in on the one app that seems to make the backup fail.  (I had this problem and found one app failing, probably due to a corrupt data file.)
    This process will take time, but if a backup works with no app data being used but clearly fails with the original settings, then somewhere in the mix of apps is a "bad" one.

    Additional things to try.
    Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

    Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

    I keep getting a warning that my phone has not backed up and that it needs to be plugged in, locked and connected to wifi to back up. I have tried many times, with all these conditions being met, but nothing.  Help!?!

    This may be caused by a corrupt existing backup that needs to be deleted, or by data on your device that is causing the backup to fail.  To troubleshoot these, try deleting your last iCloud backup (if you have one) by turning off iCloud Backup in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage, tap your device under Backups, then tap Delete Backup.  Then go back and turn iCloud Backup back on and try backing up again.
    If it still won't back up, you may have an app or something in your camera roll that is causing the backup to fail.  To locate which one, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of your device under Backups, under Backup Options tap Show All Apps, then turn them all to Off (including camera roll) and try backing up again.  If the backup is successful, then the camera roll and/or one of your apps is causing the backup to fail and you'll have to located by process of elimination. Turn the camera roll On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, turn some of your apps to On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds again, turn some more apps to On then try again; repeat this process until it fails.  Eventually you'll be able to locate the problem app and exclude it from your backup.

    Go back to the previous page.  If there's no available wireless networks listed except "Other" which is manually putting the wireless network information, see if you have "activate using cellular" or "connect to iTunes" option.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
    Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

    We restored her new iphone 5s from a backup on icloud from her previous iphone 5. it was restoring for two weeks! we called apple and eventually reset and started over. verizon had us do this again a week and a half later. still, now, its been over two and a half weeks and the phone will not restore from her icloud backup. she has alot of our pictures from the recent past holidays and pictures in icloud that we dont want to loose. along with all her itunes purchases.she is starting to get really upset. i know her backup was a fairly big one but if icloud sold her the storage to do the backup. why cant we get her phone to restore from this icloud backup? Is it the device? is that covered under our apple care? or under our phone warranty? Is it the size of the backup? im so lost and want to help her.
