Phone will play sound with headphones only?

My iPhone 4S will not play sound except on headphones. When I push the up or down button for volume adjustment it doesn't change on the screen at all ( like bars going up / down?)

1. Remove the headphone.
    If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
    in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
    Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.

Do the Music and Videos app still play through the iPad's speakers ? If so then have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the Music and Videos apps and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. I had problems with poor reception and people telling me that I kept cutting in and out, or that I sounded like I was talking underwater. Happened only after I upgraded my 16g 2g from 1.1.4 to 2.1. Husband has a 3g on 2.1 and has no problems, so area and external factors were not the cause. I took it in to an Apple Genius. He extracted the software, which he believed was somehow corrupted, and reinstalled it. I set it up as a new phone and have not had that problem since.
Only problem I am still having is that every once in a while when I turn my phone off, when I turn it back on I get the planet & USB cord with the chilling screen that my phone will work for emergency use only. A hard reset will return it to a normally functioning phone. Anyone else out there experiencing this? (This happened even after the Apple Genius extracted & reinstalled 2.1.) Anyone know what causes this?

Are you using the iPhone with any accessories? Does this seem to happen after being used with the accessory?
When the iPhone was restored, was it restored from backup or setup as a new iPhone? You can try restoring the iPhone and setting it up as a new phone, if you haven't already. From there you can test it without any accessories.
If it was already restored and setup as a new phone and is not being used with any accessories, the iPhone may need hardware repair. Just call AppleCare or make another reservation to have a Genius at a local Apple store take a look at it.

Sound with headphones & notifications only

Can only get sound with headphones and notifications. Speaker not working. HELP! Going nuts.

You really should stick one discussion or the other one. You have created two discussions now and it may get confusing.
You can try plugging and unplugging the headphones a few times. There may be something loose in the headphone connection. However, this issue has been reported before, so it has happened to others.
You can also try restoring from a backup - if you have a recent backup. If you restore from a backup - everything in that backup will be restored to the iPad. So if your last backup is one month old - you will restore the iPad to the condition it was in one month again and you will lose any app data and device settings that you had on the device since then.
You said you "reset" the iPad. To me that means you rebooted the iPad with the home and power buttons. If you mean that you restored the iOS software that's something else. If you haven't restored the iOS software, that might be your next option.
You can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your app preferences and device settings again.

Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. Anti-virus that will play nicely with VMWare Fusion

I am using VMWare to run my Boot Camp installation of Windows 7 (64-bit). I want to install anti-virus software that will play nicely with my Boot Camp installation and the same installation when run from within VMWare. I am thinking of Symantec or McAfee (which comes with VMWare). Any recommendations?

You should not have an issues with removing accounts and messing with others users backup. As long as you are not removing the main account that is yours that you use for back up, everything will be fine.
