Phones with free mobile hotspot

Are there any phones (besides the WebOS Palm Pre Plus) that you can use as a mobile hotspot or tether for free?
I don't really like my Palm Pre and I would like to get a Droid or Iphone, but my main use for my phone is a mobile hotspot. I know that you can add it as a feature to other phones for an extra $20-$30 per month, but I don't want to pay more than I already am. If that were the case, I would switch to another provider we have in town that would be much cheaper (but not as good coverage).
Thanks in advance for your help!!

Cisco WLC 5508 with 3702APs - mobile hotspot for 2000 Guest users
I've been given a fantastic "opportunity" by my boss to use our existing wireless infrastructure to provide internet access to potentially upto 2000 VIP guests arriving with BYOD devices, in a very densely populated area for a 3 day event. We are talking an area of approx 200m x 15m. Think of it as an awards ceremony/concert. The solution will also be mobile so we will be using internet breakout from different telcos as it will move to approx 20 countries. The area is also incredibly densely populated with other wifi APs. I did a brief site survey and AirMagnet could detect over 2500 other 'rogue' APs from where I was stood! I hope CleanAir works!
We need a simple authentication method for them to connect with zero admin from our side. We don't want to just offer up a rolling daily PSK as that's a bit amateur and we don't really want the VIP guests sharing the PSK with others during their stay. Ideally they could self-provision by providing an email address.
I know the WLC can handle webauth for local users but I don't think it scales very well. ie I don't think I can offer the account to several hundred people.
Cisco ISE looks a very expansive (and expensive) product but I don't think we need all it's capabilities (do I?). It would be nice to just ask a potential user for their email address and grant them access and email them next year. I've seen Cisco NAC but that looks over the top too for just guest users who will only be accessing a shared internet connection.
I've seen 3rd party supposed software solutions from Kiosk Antamedia etc do they work with Cisco Enterprise WLC solutions?
We'd like to limit users to a certain (low) bandwidth and block (say) torrent traffic to keep the general user experience worthwhile.
Does anybody have any case study documents or experience of such a project? As well as the authentication it's how well the APs will handle the dense potential number of clients trying to connect in such a confined space.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated from the knowledgeable community.
    Cheers,
    Mike

    Hi Rasika,
We are having WLC 5508 model with software version running 7.4.121.0. AP Models are AIR-CAP2602I.
Normally our WAN links are good even while the issue pertains. We are connected to remote offices over ipsec site to site vpn for WAN. The link latency in WLC between the AP and the controller shows  <1ms.
currently the Guest network is using WPA2-PSK auth given in the controller. we are trying to find a option to make the Guest wireless auth local to the office, and see if this solves the problem.
    any suggestions,
    Thank you,
    Arjun

  • Will the airport devices and time capsule work with telstras mobile hotspot (Sierra Wireless AirCard 753S Mobile Hotspot)??

will the airport devices and time capsule work with telstras mobile hotspot (Sierra Wireless AirCard® 753S Mobile Hotspot)??

Yes. There are 2 ways you could use these devices:
Wirelessly 'join' the network. This would be slower and doesn't offer extending functionality.
Use an Ethernet cable (through Powerline if you can't run a cable). This is faster and offers extending functionality. I would recommend using Bridge Mode if possible.

  • Using a Google Nexus phone with BT Mobile sim card

For my birthday, my son has given me a 'google nexus' phone. Whilst I was in Sweden, visiting him, we put my BT sim card in and he 'set it up' to work via his hub (obviously I was conscious of the cost if I had been using anything else) Now I am 'back home' how can I fix it so that I receive the 'internet etc' as I have an unlimited bundle, well as far as unlimited means!
Everything is fine when it is 'connected' to my home hub but when I venture outside I need to connect up to a 'hot zone' or 'fon' which is a bit limiting. How can I get onto the internet when ever I want.
I'm afraid I'm more of a 'pug in and play' person so struggle with all of the technical terms.
In a nutshell ... can I get on to the internet to use all the apps etc on the 'Nexus Google phone' with my BT Anywhere package and sim?
    Thanks in anticipation
    Ritchie

  • Using unlocked Iphone 2G phone with t-mobile - non emergency calls

Hello - I have gotten a used Iphone 2G phone. There is firmware installed into it and I am currently on t-mobile. The phone is unlocked. I have my t-mobile sim card in the phone....and I can dial out, and receive calls and (text messages) and that is about it. When I make a call it says 'non emergency calls only" but I can still dial out. from what I was told (from a local wireless company) the phone just can't get past the activation so if I can get past that it will work...please help me if at all possible. and will be more then happy to provide additional details with the issue....thank you in advance!

The phone was purchased unlocked (paid high price).  But I guess there is a chance I got ripped off... If so, why does it work with different carriers in Sweden with different SIM cards?

  • What can IT do to my phone with Zenprise Mobile Client

My company has just announced that for continued access to company email from personal mobile devices such iPhones, that employees must install Zenprise mobile client.  I can't find very specific information on what capabilities this software provides IT, and my IT group is ignoring my questions.  What I can find out seems to indicate that my iPhone can be totallly wiped if they want, and that the software reports back what apps I have installed, and it allows the administrator to collect "personal data".
I don't mind company policies requiring that I secure my device, and I don't mind them wiping just the company email if they think my phone is not secure or lost, but this application seems to go far beyond those points, giving them total control and me no privacy on my iPhone.  Does anyone have any more information on Zeprise?

As KiltedTim said, if you have a corporate Exchange account on your iPhone, IT likely already has the ability to wipe the whole thing. With Zenprise, though, they will have the added ability to wipe corporate data and apps while leaving your personal stuff alone.
Yes, Zenprise will allow greater visibility into your iPhone.  It will identify apps, tell them if the device is jailbroken, report on usage, etc.  It can block certain apps they deem undesirable, though I don't believe the current version can actually delete a specific app unless it is INSIDE the Zenprise "container".  No telling about the next release.  It can provide access to just about anything on the device.
I would recommend you go through your boss and\or HR department to find out if there is an internal policy for what IT (Zenprise) will be allowed to do and not do.  Is IT restricted in any way by corporate policy or will they be able to exercise all of Zenprise's features as they see fit?  I'm an IT guy and we have employees sign a document which spells out exactly what they are accepting when we put corporate stuff on a privately-owned device.
Once a company allows corporate data (email, documents, etc.) on a device, IT has a responsibility to keep it safe.  It may end up that the policy is "there is no expectation of privacy if corporate data is on the device and we reserve the right to do anything we want".  More likely, there may be no written policy, which is basically the same thing.
The bottom line, though, is that IT will have the ability to do a lot of stuff using Zenprise (just like IT has the ability to see any photos, browser history, etc. on your corporate PC).  You will need to weigh whether you're satisfied with the company's policy covering your privacy or if it isn't worth having corporate email on your iPhone.

  • How to track your phone with free text

is there any way  that i can track my stolen i pod touch but i dont have i cloud  but i have free text aand i need my ipod back so is there anyway i can  track it down with out icloud ???

    Here is Apple article:
Reporting a lost or stolen Apple product
While Apple might be able to get information when the iPod is connected to iTunes, there would be privacy issues with revealing it to anybody who claimed it was stolen. Just think what would happen if you sold the iPod and later claimed it was stolen or lost.

  • I Phone with Windows Mobile

At first my english isn't very well..
    Now to my question
What do you think about if apple write a software program like bootcamp for the I Phone? So that everybody can use Windows Mobile on his I Phone too.
I Think apple would to sell more I Phones than now. Isn't it so?
That's speaks in Apple, because much more volume of sales and a lot of Windows Mobile Users would to be glad, and buy this mobile phone.

Some dude from Finland already did write an iPhone bootcamp, but only for hacked iPhones.

  • Problems with T-Mobile Hotspots?

I am having trouble with Mail at some T-M hotspots. After logging in I can successfully search the Web. But when I launch mail it just spins and cannot send or receive mail (POP and IMAP, secure and not). Without changing anything when I start my VPN I can get and send mail from all of my accounts.
I believe the problem is at T-M since it is intermittent and differs at different of their sites. But I could be wrong.
Has anyone else had this problem or do you have any feedback and suggestions?
    Thanks
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I had this problem recently in a hotel. If you enter the debug menu and select MSIE 6.0 for Windows as the user agent it works fine. I only have Safari and Firefox installed and neither would let me access the hotspot page.
To get the DeBug Menu in Safari:
Open HD->Applications->Terminal; at the cursor, a gray block, type the following:
    defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

  • Telus email settings for phone with T-Mobile SIM

    Hello,
I have a Q10 that is normally on the Telus network.  Spending time in TX I've unlocked the Q10 and installed a T-Mobile SIM.  Great.  Got a TX phone number and BBM and web browsing work perfectly.
But.  Although my Telus email accounts make all incoming email available on the handheld, I cannot send email through the Telus accounts.
For reference the accounts are setup as:
(These are the default settings inserted automatically when I setup the Q10.)
      Username:  [email protected]
      Email Addresss:  [email protected]
      Server Address: imap.telus.net
      Port: 143
      Encription: Off
      IMAP Path Prefix:  [blank]
      SMTP Username: [blank]
      SMTP Server Addresss: smtp.telus.net
      SMTP Port: 587
In searching for a solution I found this (outdated?) KB article KB33691 which notes at the bottom that the settings only allow outgoing mail when connected to a Telus network.
What settings do I use to allow incoming and outgoing Telus email when connected to a non-Telus network?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello FYIP.
Okay, I thought there must be some sort of magic or secret setting.  I called Telus as you suggested and within 10 minutes the tech support guy solved the problem.  He looked on some list and confirmed that the standard settings should work fine for T-Mobile.  He then advised me to delete the affected Telus email accounts on the Q10 and recreate them again.  All defaults were accepted.   Exception was fields where a password was required and auto-populated he told me to erase and retype the password.
Voila!  All is good.  Outgoing and incoming mail work just fine.
Way to go Telus.  Count me as another satisfied customer.

  • Mobile hotspot free for both accounts?

    Hi,
I have a family plan with 2 palm pixis and the primary has the mobile hotspot app for free.  before i use the app on the 2nd phone, i would like to know if the service is free for the 2nd phone as well.  can anybody help?
    -Mike

The free mobile hotspot feature applies to ALL lines that have a Palm Pre/Pixi activated. So both of your lines get it for free.

  • Can I buy an iPad which can be used as a Mobile Hotspot and used to make Phone Calls?

Can I use the new iPad as a phone and a mobile hotspot?

Yes, it can be used as a mobile hotspot if your carrier supports it. iPads can only make calls using Voice Over IP apps such as Skype or FaceTime.

  • VZAM/USB551L vs. LG Enlighten as Mobile Hotspot

This has been bugging me for awhile now so I'm going to throw this out and see if anyone has or can found the answer.  I connect my Windows 8 HP Laptop to the internet using VZ Access Manager and the USB551L OR I can use  my LG Enlighten cell phone as a mobile hotspot.  Using my cell phone, I have NO ISSUES whatsoever.  Full bars of service.  Never lose connectivity.  Never drops service.  Web pages load quickly and correctly.  But, if I'm using the VZAM & USB551L I consistently lose connectivity, get "no service" messages, am lucky to get even 1 bar of service, repeatedly see DNS and DHCP errors in my event viewer and also IPv4 errors (IPv4 connection failed after 3 attempt) and since updating to Version 7.9, Facebook pages will not load at all.
Why is using my phone as a mobile hotspot "troublefree" vs. the VZAM/USB551L combo that was purchased SPECIFICALLY for the internet and is one problem after another?  I appreciate any advice on this someone has.  Thank you.

Its hard to say exactly what is different between a smartphone hotspot service and a USB modem.  A better comparison would be between a USB modem and a MiFi or mobile hotspot device.
My best guess is that the hardware used for your smartphone is better than that used on the USB modem, thus your performance is better.
Another good explanation would be that your USB551L is damaged and unable to maintain a consistent connection.  It is very common for USB modems to suffer from accidental damage while plugging and unplugging from computers.  The USB connection itself tends to wiggle lose and in many cases breaks or bends to the point where it is unusable.  Cant tell you how many of those we had to replace for that same issue when we relied on USB modems instead of MiFi's.
If your USB551L is still covered under the warranty then I would start by calling the VZW hotline and asking to speak with Technical support.  The best time to call them would be when you are at your normal enviornment and when the problem is happening.  That way VZW can go through the normal troubleshooting steps and see if a replacement is necessary or not.
There really isnt much troubleshooting or configuration settings that can be changed on a USB modem.  Either they work or they dont in most cases and the only course of action is swapping it out.
