Phonon 4.4.4

Hi all,
I just updated phonon to 4.4.4 in [testing].
With this release phonon devs splitted out the backends from phonon tarball and there is some major change.
I tested it with KDE 4.6 and everything works, I'd like to know if this version works with KDE 4.5 too, so I can move phonon and the backends in [extra].
Thank you!

The fun part is that gstreamer is recommend again and they put even pulse audio in:
Please note that the xine backend is no longer actively maintained and
we strongly advise you to not deploy it as default choice any longer,
but rather switch to gstreamer or vlc.
Also it is highly recommended to ship Phonon in combination with
PulseAudio as it improves user experience WRT default device
selection, per-application volume control in KMix and other
lovelyness.
As result of those 2 the xine backend will not work all that well
without PA on KDE 4.6. In particular I have been told that it will try
to get exclusive device access for one reason or another.

I have same error except that i get it even when my phone is not connected.

  • Phonon, amarok2 and backend

Standardly in arch phonon is built without gstreamer support, only with xine. Amarok2 is freezing (playing is freezing) after few minutes (maybe only I have this problem I don;t know, but even if only I have it is important (: ) When I edited a phonon's PKGBUILD (delete a -DWITH_GStreamer=OFF), built phonon, install it, change phonon backend to gstreamer, all is fine.
I think You mainteance phonon without gst because of dependencies, but maybe 'phonon-gstreamer' or something  like that is a good idea?

I replyed to this thread a few weeks ago, but unfortunately Pierre never answered to give any valid reason to not allow anyone to use gstreamer:

  • [phonon-qt4-gstreamer] Why pulseaudio is a mandatory dependency ?

I discover that pulseaudio is now a mandatory dependency for the 4.8.0.1 version of phonon-qt4-gstreamer package,
    https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extr … gstreamer/
but I don't want to use pulseaudio, I use alsa for the sound, the previous version of phonon-qt4-gstreamer doesn't need pulseaudio,
    so why this change ?
is it a mistake from the maintener ?
the other phonon backend ( phonon-qt4-vlc ) doesn't need of pulseaudio, so it should be the same for phonon-qt4-gstreamer,
some people have problems with pulseaudio ( bugs ), so this change will bring problems if pulseaudio is installed when we want to install phonon-qt4-gstreamer 4.8.0.1

If you want to, try installing it while ignoring the pulseaudio dependency, but leave libpulse in place.

  • Replace Phonon-Gstreamer by Phonon-VLC [SOLVED]

    Hi,
i'm quite new to GNU/Linux and this is one of the thing i don't understand. By reading the archwiki article about phonon which makes you independent on any multimedia framework like gstreamer I switched to phonon-vlc backend since i use vlc and as i understand it, it should use vlc codecs in any multimedia app in kde. Obeying the simple arch approach i tried to remove gstreamer and its plugins because i don't want to double the task. But it surprised me that pacman wanted to remove half of my system along with some packages like truecrypt. Why? Whole my life i lived in this illusion that truerypt is a encryption SW, i never used it for playing multimedia!:) Anyway, what's the deal with gstreamer? Thanks.

I'm sorry, i meant the "-d" option to skip dependency checks.
But anyway, if i run just bauerbill (pacman) -R gstreamer0.10-plugins it refuses to execute because of "farsight2". If i run bauerbill -R gstreamer0.10-plugins farsight2 it refuses because of libpurple and telepathy-farsight2 and so on... if i run -Rs the same thing happens
so if i run -Rc it wants to remove kdenetwork-krdc spicebird telepathy-qt4 telepathy-farsight libpurple farsight2.
I tried the -Rc option and then re-downloaded spicebird and the other stuff but it wanted gstreamer0.10-base-plugins. Now i have these leftovers:
    gstreamer0.10
    gstreamer0.10-base
    gstreamer0.10-base-plugins
    gstreamer0.10-good
    gstreamer0.10-python
    gstreamer0.10-ugly

  • [SOLVED]Sound works only in phonon

    Good evening,
I'd like to know why I can hear nothing. I've tried lots of solutions, but none has worked fine. But strangely the tests in Phonon work.
    My sound cards are:
card 0: MID [HDA Intel MID], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: MID [HDA Intel MID], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC892 Analog [ALC892 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 1: ALC892 Digital [ALC892 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
And the one that should work is the 1,0; I can tell you that because it works in Phonon.
    - I've checked out both alsamixer and Kmix and the channels were unmuted.
    - I've tried to set the default sound card using a global asound.conf.
    - I've checked whether all modules have been loaded correctly
    - Trying to play something with aplay, the device is busy
    - In the UEFI, the audio is enabled
The issue is always the same:
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -2, No such file or directory
    I think I've written everything, I'm sorry if I haven't.

I just had an issue with no sound after recent updates.  Not sure it's the same problem you are having.
I found I had to open Audio Mixer, select Sound card: HDA Intel PCH (Alsa mixer), Select Controls, check box for Speaker and check box for Headphones.  After doing this I found the Speaker volume was set at minimum (although Master and PCM were already set at maximum).  Adjusted Speaker volume up and I finally had sound again.

  • [SOLVED] Phonon and libkhtml

    Hello,
Due to delay in hardware repair, I did not update my Arch box since early september.
Now I have the machine back and updated my installation.
All seems well, except for one problem that I don't understand:
Since the updates were installed, I get the following error message from various KDE applications:
symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libkhtml.so.5: undefined symbol: _ZN6Phonon19AbstractMediaStream8needDataEx
The message is thrown by Konqueror, but also by many other applications at startup (most important: Kile, which I really need for work).
Except for Konqueror this leads to non-starting applications.
I have installed the phonon-gstreamer backend as well as the phonon-mplayer-git backend. I also tried installing the phonon-vlc backend.
Can somebody point me to the reason of the error?

Thanks for the answer, help is very appreciated.
Didn't notice any errors during the update process.
    Here's the installed versions:
    pacman -Q | grep -i phonon
    phonon 1:4.5.1-1
    phonon-gstreamer 4.5.1-1
    phonon-mplayer-git 20111025-1
    Also kdelibs:
    pacman -Q | grep -i kdelibs
    kdelibs 4.7.2-2

  • Phonon settings reset each login.

This might not be a big deal, but it's really annoying.
Each time I log into KDE, I have to go to the "Audio Hardware Setup" tab and set it to use my sound card instead of my graphics card.
I don't even know why my graphics card is there.
Is there a way to save phonon's settings?

Further on this, the latest login today resulted in the mouse scroll setting being retained but not anything else.
Also I didn't get the Apple ID prompt.
    Not sure what this means.

  • [SOLVED] No sound with phonon-vlc

I have recently installed Arch Linux and everything's going pretty nice (awesome documentation btw) except for the sound.
I am using the VLC backend for Phonon.
    I have two sound cards:
    -Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
    -Integrated on ATI Radeon HD-4850
I'm using the former. The settings for Phonon detect lists a lot of Audigy2 devices.
When I booted up and logged in, sometimes sound worked, sometimes it didn't.
Everytime I logged in Phonon said an audio device has been removed (lie) and asked me if it can forget it. I once clicked yes. Now there's never any sound.
I have looked at the troubleshooting page in the wiki and there was a solution for the first problem ("Random Lack of Sound on Startup"), I followed the instructions and created /etc/asound.conf and put this in it:
    ctl.dmixer {
    type hw
    card Audigy2
    It didn't do much good.
    When I run speaker-test, I get this:
    speaker-test 1.0.24.2
    Playback device is default
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory
    Any help is much appreciated.
EDIT: The problem was not with Phonon. The problem was that ALSA sometimes chose the wrong sound card as default.

I'm having the same problem (after upgrading), but your trick doesn't help. I only have one device anyway:
    # cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [Audigy2 ]: Audigy2 - SB Audigy 2 Platinum [SB0240P]
    SB Audigy 2 Platinum [SB0240P] (rev.4, serial:0x10021102) at 0x9000, irq 19
Also, I do have sound in a TTY console, but applications started in KDE (either in Konsole or graphically) don't have sound. When I start audacious, it says:
ALSA error: snd_mixer_attach failed: No such file or directory.
ALSA error: snd_pcm_open failed: No such file or directory.

file ~/.mplayer/config is exist and available for reading (and even writing).
    any ideas?
    p.s when I start command
    "mplayer" "-noquiet -slave -identify -msglevel demux=6 -framedrop -nokeepaspect -zoom -colorkey 0x020202 -monitorpixelaspect 1 -contrast 0 -brightness 0 -hue 0 -saturation 0 -volume 100 -prefer-ipv4 -ass -embeddedfonts -nomouseinput -sub-fuzziness 1 -input nodefault-bindings:conf=/dev/null -include ~/.mplayer/config /usr/share/sounds/KDE-Sys-Log-In.ogg"
    without any quotes It play!

I found the source of the missing entries. Somehow with quick-init alsa-oss sequence doesn't exit ( /dev/snd/snq) reloading the module snd_pcm_oss with rmmod and modprobe restores the missing entries like HDAudio ALC888 Analog in phonon-xine and make my capture device entry reappear.
Now to find why when quick init loads snd_pcm_oss, the snd_seq_oss module isn't loaded alongside.
Update : While snd_seq_oss isn't loaded, just adding it in my rc.conf doesn't cut it, I have now Alsa default device, oss default device, jack, and esd listed by phonon xine instead of HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog), HDA Intel (ALC888 Digital SPDIF IEC958) HDA Intel (NVIDIA HDMI), jack and esd. Audio capture device is not back either.
I suspect this has to do with the way qinit load modules, maybe it's because they are loaded before udev. back to some testing.
Update2 : As suspected moving the starting of udev before the module loading is the solution. Looks like modules are configured when loaded only and if udev is not available rules like : /lib/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-alsa.rules will not be applied until module reload. i lose some boot time but well whatever let's go shopping for ssd.

  • [SOLVED] Possible to switch phonon backend?

During my first Arch installation, I used all the defaults. I had distorted sound in my headphones. Then, because of some problems with dual-booting, I had to reinstall Arch from scratch. Thinking it might make a difference, instead of gstreamer I chose xine this time around. (It made do difference.)
Anyway, I've since learned that "xine is unmaintained and will not see updates", so I'm wondering if it is possible to switch from xine to either gstreamer or vlc backend without having to reinstall from scratch.

do you know you have a systemsettings in kde? go to system settings > hardware > multimedia > phonon > backend.
personally I use the vlc backend for now, seems like the gstreamer backend is using some CPU..
choose from phonon-gstreamer, phonon-vlc, phonon-xine from extra and phonon-mplayer-git from aur.
