Photo Array Question

I have a bit of a silly question about the photo array Apple uses in many of their publications, including the idea behind "CoverFlow". Check this link to see what I mean: http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/mac-os-x-10-5.ars/2. (Bottom photo)
Is there a way to achieve this? What software accomplishes this? I am a webmaster using iWeb.
I have something similar on the page I have created, but the difference is my photos are straight as they descend, whereas Apple's are straight, yet not square, they seem to be turned, like in this top image of Ubuntu: http://www.taimila.com/?q=node/3. The photos are not rotated, but turned.
Any software ideas?
Any ideas at all?

Resizing is a different issue altogether from format.
It's safe to scale the image in ID regardless of the format. If you look in the info panel with the image selected you'll see two resolution numbers listed, actual and effective. Actual is just the resolution at the dimensions the image was saved and is essentially irrelevant. Effective resolution is what you have at the dimensions you are currently using, and that's the number that counts. If that number is in the range that is acceptable for the type of output you are using, there is no need to resize the image in Photoshop at all.
If you MUST resize the image, then yes, convert to something besides jpeg if that's what it is to start. And keep in mind that up-sampling won't improve image quality in general, and downsampling more than 20% or so can cause you to lose fine details (but so will scaling down).

  • Photo Storage Question

    Hi:  When I take a photo with my C3 and designate it be stored on the microSD Disk is the photo also stored temporarily on the phone's internal memory?
    Thanks, Chato

  • Photo stream questions, sharing, etc.

    Shared photo stream questions
    Camera Roll (CR), Photo Stream (PS)
    If I create a shared PS and share it with a friend, is this temporary like the main PS (most recent 1000 images)?
    For example, if I put one photo in a shared PS and then take 1000 new photos (but I don't add it to the shared PS), presumably it will disappear from my main PS, but will the original photo disappear from the shared PS, too?
    I noticed that each month I have a new monthly event titled, for example, "August photo stream", etc. Are these temporary, too? If I take 1000 photos in September, will the August PS event start to lose images, or will this only occur in the main PS section?
    Apple's web site says "iCloud stores new photos for 30 days, so you have plenty of time to connect your iOS device to Wi-Fi and make sure you always have your most recent shots handy." What does this mean? If I take a photo on iPhone it's permanently in CR (until I sync with iTunes on OS X and then iPhoto offers to remove them from CR), but they're also in PS, which is temporary, right? If so, as long as CR is permanent, how big an issue is the 30 day rule?
    Here's where I'm (further) confused...
    On iPad, my PS section (the tab on bottom) only has 30, relatively recent photos. Each photo was taken with iPhone.
    However, on iPhone, my PS section has 547 images. Some of these were taken as screen shots from iPad (even though they're not on iPad's PS??) Some of the images were "Save As... "  image files from OS X, some were photos imported to desktop iPhoto from a camera. Many of the images were taken years ago. On desktop iPhoto, I have over 3000 images, but the images on iPhone's PS do not appear to be the most recent 1000 images imported to iPhoto.
    So why did iPad's screen shots disappear from iPads PS yet appear on iPhone's PS?
    Why aren't the two iOS device's PS sections the same?
    Is this confusing to everyone, or am I just dense?
    Thanks!

    You are most likely using the same apple id under settings>iCloud. If you just want to stop the photo sharing you can open settings>iCloud and turn off photostream. If you want to keep using photostream and still not share you need to set up an alternate apple id to use under settings>icloud

  • Photo album questions

    Hi, I have put several hours into trying to solve these
    problems myself, but I am stuck. The page in question is:
    http://www.georgeglazer.com/maps/newyorkmaps/hydeli/hydeliinv.html
    1. Detailregion area does not display when page opens. It's
    just a skinny gray box on the right. Once you click a thumbnail,
    however, it displays fine, and will display all the images as you
    click on them. Thinking maybe the non-working slide show buttons
    were the problem, I tried replacing the <div id="controls">
    area with the identical one from another page I have that works
    just fine:
    Why does THIS work:
    http://www.georgeglazer.com/prints/aanda/fashion/kuhninv/kuhninv.html
    BUT NOT THIS:
    http://www.georgeglazer.com/maps/newyorkmaps/hydeli/hydeliinvquicktest.html
    I've made several pages like hydeliinvquicktest.html that all
    function properly, so I'm baffled.
    2. How do I get a simple slide show going?
    The Spry Photo Album Demo shows how powerful Spry can be, but
    I don't need all that complexity, and I'm having trouble narrowing
    it down to what I need -- no multiple databases, no growing and
    shrinking thumbnails. All I want is to be able to put a bunch of
    images and one XML dataset in a folder and have the ability to have
    people click on "Previous," "Next," or "Play/Pause" in addition to
    being able to click on a specific image.
    One of the problems with the demo for me is the dataset names
    used in the demo get confusing -- I'm having trouble following the
    distinction between and relationship between when you use
    dsGallery, dsGalleries, dsPhotos, and photo, not to mention, why it
    is ultimately unnecessary to make any reference to "china" and and
    the other folder names. And since I know next to nothing about
    Javascript, I can't figure out what substitutions to make to the
    gallery.js code, which is designed to work with these multiple
    databases, and also can't figure out which pieces I need and
    whether the pieces I don't need would get in the way if I left them
    in the js doc or if everything extraneous has to be eliminated.
    3. One of the problems with implementing more Spry pages is
    the tedious work involved to make a little thumbnail for every
    single image in a set, and then make sure they're all exactly the
    same size, which is what I've done so far. I have figured out what
    to do when the main image size varies, and Spry handles that well.
    But here are my problems:
    a. What if the thumbnails vary in size? For instance, this
    hydeliinv.html page has four maps that are part of a set, but are
    all different proportions, and four details I'd like to show that
    represent what they look like close up, all of which are in
    different proportions as well.
    b. And can I have Spry call on the same image file and
    display that full size for the main image, and reduced for the
    thumbnail?
    You'll see right now in
    http://www.georgeglazer.com/maps/newyorkmaps/hydeli/hydeliinv.html
    I've set the height and width in the spry: repeat tag for the
    thumbnails to 100px. I tried just setting the height to that, and
    width to auto; I tried just setting the height to that, and
    omitting the width. In both cases, no thumbnails display at all. I
    see in the Spry Photo Album Demo the use of "path" designations in
    photos.xml. Could I do something with an XML doc that looks like
    this to address both (a) and (b)?:
    <hydeli>
    <inv_item id="1">
    <title>First Map</title>
    <dimensions1>36.5 x 34 inches</dimensions1>
    <dimensions2>37.5 x 36.25 inches</dimensions2>
    <photo
    path="hydeli1.jpg" width="390" height="400"
    thumbpath="hydeli1.jpg" thumbwidth="98"
    thumbheight="100">
    </photo>
    </inv_item>
    <inv_item id="2">
    <title>Second Map</title>
    <dimensions1>36.5 x 34 inches</dimensions1>
    <dimensions2>37.5 x 36.25 inches</dimensions2>
    <photo
    path="hydeli2.jpg" width="379" height="400"
    thumbpath="hydeli2.jpg" thumbwidth="95"
    thumbheight="100">
    </photo>
    </inv_item>
    </hydeli>
    I tried to figure this out, too, but to no avail.
    Thanks for any help you can give me!
    --Helen

    I understand the challenge and worked out some answers that
    support our photo gallery for the ski club. I wanted something
    simple that would support a gallery of up to 100 pictures reliably.
    Also, I wanted it to extract information from the image metadata
    such as names or descriptions.
    The image processing is done using photoshop macros which
    create the appropriate sized image and thumbnail.
    After trial and error I realized current CSS technology is
    NOT capable of vast quantities of demands from more than 20
    thumbnails. That's when I settled on hard formatting the thumbnails
    png files with a nice black border. The thumbnails load up quite
    nicely with NO style formatting. I used PNG files for the
    transparency support.
    The XML data is created using a program I wrote to parse the
    metadata from the image files. Now that all the photoshop macros
    and the XML parser is written, I can load up a large gallery in
    less than thirty minutes. (Not including photo editing.)
    Hope this helps.

  • Trying to send multiple types in a byte array -- questions?

    Hi,
    I have a question which I would really appreciate any help on.
    I am trying to send a byte array, that contains multiple types using a UDP app. and then receive it on the other end.
    So far I have been able to do this using the following code. Please note that I create a new String, Float or Double object to be able to correctly send and receive. Here is the code:
    //this is on the client side...
    String mymessage ="Here is your stuff from your client" ;
    int nbr = 22; Double nbr2 = new Double(1232.11223);
    Float nbr3 = new Float(8098098.809808);
    ByteArrayOutputStream baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
    ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream(baos);
    oos.writeObject(mymessage);
    oos.writeInt(nbr);
    oos.writeObject(nbr2);
    oos.writeObject(nbr3);
    oos.close();
    byte[] buffer = baos.toByteArray();
    socket.send(packet);
    //this is on the server side...
    byte [] buffer = new byte [5000];
    String mymessage = null; int nbr = 0; Double nbr2 = null;
    Float nbr3 = null;
    mymessage = (String)ois.readObject();
    nbr = ois.readInt();
    nbr2 = (Double) ois.readObject();
    nbr3 = (Float) ois.readObject();
    My main question here is that I have to create a new Float and Double object to be able to send and receive this byte array correctly. However, I would like to be able to have to only create 1object, stuff it with the String, int, Float and Double, send it and then correctly receive it on the other end.
    So I tried creating another class, and then creating an obj of this class and stuffing it with the 4 types:
    public class O_struct{
    //the indiv. objects to be sent...
    public String mymessage; public int nbr; public Double nbr2;
    public Float nbr3;
    //construct...
    public O_struct(String mymessage_c, int nbr_c, double nbr2_c, float nbr3_c){
    my_message = my_message_c;
    nbr = nbr_c;
    nbr2 = new Double(nbr2_c);
    nbr3 = new Float(nbr3_c);
    Then in main, using this new class:
    in main():
    O_struct some_obj_client = new O_struct("Here is your stuff from your client", 22, 1232.1234, 890980980.798);
    oos.writeObject(some_obj_client);
    oos.close();
    send code....according to UDP
    However on the receiving side, I am not sure how to be able to correctly retrieve the 4 types. Before I was explicitely creating those objects for sending, then I was casting them again on the receiving side to retrieve then and it does work.
    But if I create a O_struct object and cast it as I did before with the indiv objects on the receiving end, I can't get the correct retrievals.
    My code, on the server side:
    O_struct some_obj_server = new O_struct(null, null, null. null);
    some_obj_server = (O_struct)ois.readObject();
    My main goal is to be able to send 4 types in a byte array, but the way I have written this code, I have to create a Float and Double obj to be able to send and receive correctly. I would rather not have to directly create these objects, but instead be able to stuff all 4 types into a byte array and then send it and correctly be able to retrieve all the info on the receiver's side.
    I might be making this more complicated than needed, but this was the only way I could figure out how to do this and any help will be greatly appreciated.
    If there an easier way to do I certainly will appreciate that advise as well.
    Thanks.

    public class O_struct implements Serializable {
    // writing
    ObjectOutputStream oos = ...;
    O_struct struct = ...;
    oos.writeObject(struct);
    // reading
    ObjectInputStream ois = ...;
    O_struct struct = (O_struct)ois.readObject();
    I will be sending 1000s of these byte arrays, and I'm sure having to create a new Double or Float on both ends will hinder this.
    I am worried that having to create new objs every time it is sending a byte array will affect my application.
    That's the wrong way to approach this. You're talking about adding complexity to your code and fuglifying it because you think it might improve performance. But you don't know if it will, or by how much, or even if it needs to be improved.
    Personally, I'd guess that the I/O will have a much bigger affect on performance than object creation (which, contrary to popular belief, is generally quite fast now: http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-jtp01274.html)
    If you think object creation is going to be a problem, then before you go and cock up your real code to work around it, create some tests that measure how fast it is one way vs. the other. Then only use the cock-up if the normal, easier to write and maintain way is too slow AND the cock-up is significantly faster.

  • Database array questions

    Disclaimer: I am new to DB's.
    I'm looking at creating a MySQL database to hold tests done on DUTs (each with a specific serial). In theory, each DUT undergoes 3 tests. Each test produces a 401x9 2D array of DBLs. I am not concerned with the write speed to the DB, but I do want to optimize the read of the DB (potentially may need to retrieve 1000+ of these 2D arrays as fast as possible). I have the DB Toolkit; using LV 8.5. Questions:
    1. I have seen two different ways to save a 2D array in a DB mentioned: first, writing one row at a time with the DB Insert vi, resulting in a 2D array in a table (which is slow writing) or second, changing the 2D array to a variant and using the DB Insert vi, resulting in a single cell in a table. I know I can use other methods (parameterized vi, sql commands, user defined functions on the DB server, please do comment if you have found drastic performance increase with these methods), but of the two ways of storing a 2D array, can I read a 2D array from a table faster than reading a 2D array from a single cell? Whenever I need this data, I will read it all (i.e. I will never have to search for certain data within these individual 2D arrays)
    2. I may have installed the 8.2.1 DB toolkit, because the Database Variant to Data vi/function does not drop onto the Block Diagram when I drag it from the palette, and the Help has ???. I assume this is because it just points to the normal Variant to Data, which in 8.5 is in a subpalette as compared to 8.2.1. Any quick way to fix this?
    3. Any other general suggestions for a DB newbie? I've been trying to derive best practices from KB aritcles, this forum, and the web, but there is so much information and so many varying opinions I find it hard to narrow down best practices.
    Michael

    Hi Miguel,
    It looks like you are embarking on a very interesting project. Although you probably have seen many of the following documents, I've linked a few to get you started.
    Discussion forum using LabVIEW to read from tables
    Developer Zone article about developing a test system
    Knowledgebase article about imitations of speed with database toolset
    As far as your first question, I would suggest trying out both methods with simple code and testing with a small amount of values to determine  which one will be the fastest.
    Good luck with your project!

  • Array questions

    Hi, everyone.
    I'm writing a lab program which counts the number of occurances of English letters in a line of English text.
    The program has the following requirements
    Assume that we input only lowercase English text
    The program should be able to count the number of occurances of English letters in a text and print out both the number of occurances and the letters. Don't print out letters that don't exist in the text.
    I write my code as following:
    import java.util.*;
    public class Translator
    public static void main(String[]args)
         Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in);
         System.out.println("Please enter text:");
         String text = sc.nextLine();
         char[] input = text.toCharArray();
        public static void countLetters(char [] input)
            System.out.println("Letter           Number of occurances");
            int[] alphabet = new int[26];
            for (int i=0; i<input.length; i++)
                if (input=='a')
    alphabet[0] += 1;
    else if(input[i]=='b')
    alphabet[1] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='c')
    alphabet[2] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='d')
    alphabet[3] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='e')
    alphabet[4] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='f')
    alphabet[5] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='g')
    alphabet[6] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='h')
    alphabet[7] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='i')
    alphabet[8] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='j')
    alphabet[9] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='k')
    alphabet[10] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='l')
    alphabet[11] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='m')
    alphabet[12] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='n')
    alphabet[13] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='o')
    alphabet[14] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='p')
    alphabet[15] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='q')
    alphabet[16] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='r')
    alphabet[17] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='s')
    alphabet[18] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='t')
    alphabet[19] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='u')
    alphabet[20] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='v')
    alphabet[21] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='w')
    alphabet[22] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='x')
    alphabet[23] += 1;
    else if (input[i]=='y')
    alphabet[24] += 1;
    else alphabet[25] +=1;
    System.out.println("a");
    for(int i=0; i<input.length; i++)
    if (alphabet[i] > 0)
    System.out.println(input[i] +" "+alphabet[i]);
    Though having gotten no syntext error complain from the compiler, no matter what I input, the program returns nothing. At first I assumed that it's the first for loop's problem, so that I typed in some System.out.println() methods at the end of some elseif statements. But I still got nothing after this trial. So that I guess it's the char[] input = text.toCharArray();'s problem.
    Have the input[i] elements really stored any character (I tried to convert the input string into char array) after I typed char[] input = text.toCharArray();'s problem. ?
    My another question is: since the input[i] stores character, when I am trying to print out the letters that exist in the text through the last System.out.println() method in my code, I can use input[i] to represent the letter which I want to print. I figure out now that the problem is caused by the last for loop. I modify it as following:
    for(i=0; i<26; i++)
                if (alphabet[i] > 0)
                System.out.println('a'+i +"          "+alphabet);
    }After the modification, now I can get the right answer. The only problem I have now is trying to convert the interger number produced by 'a'+i back into character. I tried to replace 'a'+i with toChar('a'+i), but it doesn't work. Can you give me some explanation? Thank you very much!

  • Spry photo gallery question:

    Hi,
    thanks to mr. Booth's tutorial I was able to implement a nice Spry gallery into our website. Now I want to change one simple thing: the pictures that make up the galleries are to be moved to our ftp server (as opposed to our webserver). The logical thing to to seemed to edit the base parameter in the relevant photo.xml file to something like this: base=ftp://user:[email protected]/directory/ but no dice. So the question is: how do I point the xml file to an external ftp location for the actual photos?
    Thanks in advance for any help!

    you can't do cross domain requests with AJAX. going to a ftp:// would count as other domain.
    So that is not possible. Unless you create a server side proxy that reads the data from your ftp server and about puts the results.

  • IWeb Google Maps and Photo Gallery Question

    I have a Website I started to create a while back. Is there a way to insert a google map and some type of photo gallery
    into my site, now that MobileMe is gone???  I really liked the simplicity of iWeb. Is there anything else out there?
    Thanks, Eric U

    You can still insert Google maps into your site - you just need to do it as you did before the Google maps widget arrived.
    Go to Google maps and create the map you want and then copy and paste the code and place it in an ordinary html snippet and then click on Apply and the map will appear.
    Also, another tip - you could have found all the answers that you were looking for before even posting your question by searching this forum and there have been literally hundreds of posts on the same topics of Google maps and slide shows.
    Suggest you search the forum and look for posts by Old Toad and Roddy, who have found alternatives.
    You don't need to stop using iWeb - if you have it use it, but just upload to another host/server.
    There are plenty of alternative out there - again a forum search would have given you answers.
    Take a look at RapidWeaver, Sandvox, Freeway Pro/Express and Flux 4.  You can download free trials of all of these and most are available for purcahse from the Mac App Store.

  • Flash Photo Gallery Question

    Hello,
    I am a photographer interested in designing a photo gallery
    website.My question is how are the special effects created in Flash
    for when a thumbnail is clicked and the photo downloads into the
    picture viewer? (such as the photo fading in , the photo is
    assembled from small blocks, the photo downloads from left to
    right, the photo downloads after a flash of light) Is there a name
    for these effects? Thank you so much, Wendy

    These are some complex components/files you can get free off
    the net:
    http://www.sephiroth.it/file_detail.php?id=139
    ImageGallery 3
    http://www.sephiroth.it/file_detail.php?id=135
    Photo Album
    http://www.sephiroth.it/file_detail.php?id=124
    Image Fader
    This particular sample is the closets to what you are looking
    for. It is XML
    driven so all the files information can be edited w/o
    changing the Flash movie.
    You can define 9 transitions along the image name and the
    rest happens automatically.
    There are many more samples online, search for stuff like
    "flash photo gallery"
    or "flash gallery", some free some shareware but definitely
    plenty.
    Best Regards

  • Photo Frame Question

    I know that this is not an Apple Question but I haven't found a forum for this and I was curios if anyone else had run into this issue:
    I have a Sylvania 10" Digital photo frame (I do not recommend this frame to anyone. Support on it is lousy to non-existant and I am still waiting for a replacement remote control for it which I ordered in March. I am using my harmony remote to control it right now.) which displays photos pretty well. It's resolution is 1024 x 600. The issue that I am seeing that I wonder if anyone else has seen on their digital photo frame, is that when I transfer photos from the mac to the photo frame and then view them with the quick view progam, the images are corrupted. Even Disk Verify shows that the jpg images are corrupted yet the photo frame has no problem displaying them. They look normal with no corruption at all. The files on my hard drive are fine with no corruption at all. Since I won't be using the frame as a backup for my photos anyway, its not an end of the world issue but I am curious if this happens with other digital photo frames. Interestingly enough, the disk utility sees the frame as having an unknown or unspecified partition with an MS-DOS Fat 32 format on it.
    Thanks,
    Patrick

    Hello tweetybird53,
    Thanks very much for purchasing the HP Digital Photo Frame.  I regret that you are having some product and support challenges.  Please email me with your HP case number or your product number, serial number and contact information so that we can get your issue resolved quickly.
    The answer to the question, "Is there an HP service depot near where you live that you can take it there?" is no.  Currently, customers can not drop off products at an HP service center.  There is a process to follow that entails mailing in the product if it is coded for repair.  In some cases, the defective product is simply replaced.
    I look forward to assisting tweetybird53.
    Regards,

  • Photo streaming question

    I'm not sure where this question ought to be posted, so I apologize if its the wrong section.
    In anycase, I wish to know how to erase a photo on photo streaming.
    Thanks!

    To get the photos on another devices you either have to share them or both have to be using the same iCloud account.
    What do you think share means?
