Photo attachment shows up as "lego" with "?" - no preview

Not sure what I changed, but now when I attach a photo to an email in OS X 10.4.11 no preview shows up and a square, light-blue "lego" with a question mark on its side appears in the body of the email. I have sent one to myself and the photo arrives in my inbox as an attachment. This is weird - and it is new. I looked back in my sent folder and 10 days ago it was working just fine.

Could be many things, perhaps we should start with this...

2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.

Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.

Hidden Photo attaching to ALL emails end with photos attached

Hi. Every time I send an email with photos attached, an additional photo (always the same one) always attaches itself, too. You cannot see it as an attachment at the bottom of the email, however, when the recipient opens the pictures and clicks to view the next photo, etc., this one particular photo always shows up at the end. I can no longer send business related photos, because this personal family photo always attaches itself. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

Can you see this hidden photo in the catalog? Try attaching a tag to this photo and a different tag(Tag2) to the photos you want to send. Search for the 2nd tag(tag 2) and when the results are displayed, select all these photos and send an email to yourself to see if the hidden photo is still getting attached. This should not be happening but please see if the above steps make any difference.

Photos not showing up in Mail

I'm using Mail 4.4. Recently most of the e-mails I receive with embedded photos now show a blue box with a question mark instead of a photo. This has only been happening for a couple of months. Photos added as an attachment can be viewed all right in Quick Look. Does anyone have any idea why or how I can correct it?

This is normally the result of the sender having linked to a photo on a remote server, rather than actually attaching it. Then when it is sent to you, the link does not find the server with image.
More info, please, including analyzing whether the message size could in fact contain the expected image?

Take your screenshot, then reply to this message and click the camera icon in the editing window. Click the "Choose File" button and select the screenshot. If you don't know how to take a screenshot, search for that term in the built-in help.

Why do my photos not show for come projects?

I have an Aperture folder containing 9 projects and about 1500 photos. All photos appear when I click on the folder, but do not appear when I click on 7 of the 9 projects (they used to). Also the Info and Adjustment views are blank The photos appear for each of the 9 projects in iPhoto and the photo count shows the same number (with a few minor differences) in Aperture and iPhoto.
Any help would be appreciated. Would repairing the Library help?

I'm hitting a similar, rather scary bug in Aperture which I expect is behind your issue as well.
*** I've found that as soon as I drag a project in to or out of a folder in the library window, all the photos in that project disappear. ***
Aperture is somehow losing the link to the images when you drag the project somewhere. You can still see the images if you click on the folder (or indeed on the overall "Photos" item at the top of the library list) but not when you select the project itself.
You cannot drag the images from the folder into the old apparently empty project, I guess because Aperture thinks that's where they already are.
I did manage to recover things by creating a new project and dragging the images into there, then deleting the old project. But this bug means that I cannot organise my projects in any useful way - I have to leave them exactly where I created them.
Organising my library is now fraught with danger, so if anyone has found a solution to this I'm keen to hear it.
I'll keep working on it and try and find the cause and/or a fix.
I'm using Aperture 3.5.1 on a Mac Pro 2011 running 10.9.4. Library is stored on an SSD. Images are stored in the library file/package rather than referenced.

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

I fixed the problem somewhat myself by removing the miniSD and manually inserting it. It did not populate automatically. I had to open iPhoto and then it populated only the most recent photos I had taken which fortunately were the only ones I need. No error messages this seems to be a new occurrence.
Is there a way to just turn iPhoto off and download my photos to the folder of my own choosing?

How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM. My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore. Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed. I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc. I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads. Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system. I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system. But are there other options to connect the new TC. Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above. after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working. Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant. I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work. The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network. Are we going backwards?

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??

I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC. the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.

You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

Have your brother create a contact in his phone for himself. Inside his own contact, have him add his phone number and his iCloud address.
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive Have your brother select both his phone number and email addresses where he would like to receive iMessages.

My Photos app works the same on iOS 5 as it did on iOS 4 i.e. I can have a different track for each album. When I select a track for a photo album I then start the slideshow so that it shows the first couple of photos with the track playing - I'm not sure it's necessary to start the slideshow but I always do and it remembers that track for that album.

Are you sure PDF won't work? It should as what you're trying to do is pretty much what it is designed for (PDF - Portable Document Format). On a Mac anywone who receives the file should be able to see it in all its page layout glory by using the app Preview or Adobe Reader. Same on a PC, the file should be viewable as a PDF file using Adobe Reader and probably some other viewer (don't use PCs so not sure what other apps).
What application are you creating the file in and are you sure you're exporting it correctly in PDF format, fonts and images embedded?

My events photo albums have all been renamed with a number followed by IMPRT instead of the date which was how they were originally named. Also the photo now showing on the top of each folder is not actually in that folder. How do I restore?

This happened when I linked to itunes. Any idea how to restore it to how it looked before?

One thing that I find odd is that iTunes used to rebuild the .itl file when you deleted it. It seems as if the newer iTunes somehow broke this old capability. If you delete the .itl file it can't rebuild it- it simple treats this as if this is a fresh installation and completely ignores the fact that the .xml file has all the data in it. I think Apple needs to bring back this old "feature". Of course, the negative with that was that you lost all of the "Date Added" info along with some other stuff but at least it still kept the favorites info etc. (and I think maybe even the path although I don't believe I ever tried that because my account path has never changed until now).
One side note: I can't find where the iTunes Windows SDK is. I was hoping to try to use that to access the .itl "database" and write a utility to fix this situation. Seems like this has moved from its original location...
