Photo Backup - 2 places ?

I don't want my Photos backed up, or clouded
After upgrading to ios8 I set up Backups, and shut off "Photos" in the iCloud menu. When it tried to backup this morning, it said not enough space.
I see that it also has a setting in Storage/Manage Storage for "Photo Library", which I also then had to shut off.
What/Why are the 2 of these ???

This is the first time you sync your iPhone with iPhone on you Mac? Because if you had synced before, only new images of your iPhone will be asked to import on iPhoto. Also you can import only photos content taken with the built-in camera or captured on the device. You can't import photos already synced from iTunes.
Like years ago without digital images, most people aren't well organized regarding storing photos, that'w why the are tons of people asking (not talking about you specifically).
The best way to have your images organized it's through iPhoto if you have a Mac. You can have all of your images well organized, from your devices (iPhone, iPad, etc), and also photos from any other source (DSLR camera, shared images, etc).
Some tips:
- Be sure to enable in iPhoto » Preferences » Advanced » and check “Copy items to the iPhoto Library”.
- Delete locally images on your HD after importing to avoid duplicates.
- Always have a Time Machine backup up to date. If you are afraid about an external HDD failure, you can have another TM backup simultaneously (customized just for the folders just to keep important data), like i do.
- Use iTunes to syncronize your iPhoto Library entirely or customized for any the device you want.
- Also you can take advantage of your Home Sharing, Photo Stream and Photo Sharing to save space.
Regarding iCloud Data Centers, all data is encrypted and doesn't remain in just one server. To my knowledge if you live in US your iCloud data resides in US Data Centers. IMO Apple is the most realible in terms of encryption and privacy. You can use Google or other services, but I'm afraid that no data is 100% safe today unless is in your own hands. Are we 100% sure that all of our online Credit Cards, Bank Accounts, Hosting Services, ISP's, etc, meet your understandable requirements? That's why I'm using, aside iCloud, local backups. But it's just my opinion, and I prefer leave that for blogs.

Syncing photos does NOT sync the phone; the camera is considered a separate device from the rest of the iPhone. You sync with iTunes, and should do it often enough so you don't cry if you lose all data on the phone.
At this point you have no choice; there is no way to NOT restore it. If the last backup is not corrupt it should restore the phone as of the time of the last backup.

I have more than one photo backup on my computer now itunes has downloaded three of each photo. How do I remove duplicates?

Wich version of iPhoto do you have? You need iPhoto '09 or '11 to order prints.
Make an album of all photos you want to order in the same order.
Then select all photos at once, when you use Share > order prints.
You should see a panel like this, where you can mark the quantities. The screenshot is from iPhoto 9.6:

  • How do I place photos in specific places in the timeline

I don't want to build my project linearly.  I want to place photos in certain places, but when I try to import any they always go to the start of the timeline.
How do I put these photos where I want them, so they can become my guideposts in the timeline?

    Hey Mark Burgess,
I have an article for you about importing photos into your timeline in iMovie and positioning them correctly in your project:
iMovie '11: Add photos from iPhoto to a project
After you find the photo you want to use, click the photo to see a preview in the viewer. Then do one of the following to add it to your project:
Drag it between clips or between a clip and a transition. As you drag, a vertical green line appears anyplace you can add the photo. When you add a photo, by default it is set to remain onscreen for four seconds, but you can change this duration if you want. Also, the Ken Burns effect is applied to the photo, which makes it appear as though the camera is panning across and zooming in on the image. You can modify this effect if you choose. Refer to the “See also” topics below for more information.
Drag the photo to a video clip; a green Add (+) symbol appears where you can drop it. From the menu that appears, you can choose to replace the video clip with the photo or insert the photo. If Advanced Tools are turned on, you can add the photo as a picture-in-picture clip, and more.

  • Can I delete iPhoto amd iPhoto library once Photos is in place

Can I delete iPhoto amd iPhoto library once Photos is in place, or iPhoto is still useful.

    Yes -  but don't.
Wait until Photos matures.  Both libraries will live side by side.  As will the apps. You can still open your iPhoto library with iPhoto.

Is it possible to tag an individual with their name in a group photo when I place the cursor over the person's face?

    A work around...
Create your text, place it underneath the face, then hide that text layer. Make sure you save to a format that supports layers like psd or tiff.

Comment me débarrasser de cet incident agaçant ?

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. Make no other changes. Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.

  • Permanent photo backup - iCloud, iPad, iPhone

    Hello.
I just purchased 200GB plan on iCloud.
I thought it would be the easiest way to backup the photos on my iPad Air and iPhone 5.
Now while browsing trough some tutorials on the web - every site is saying that iCloud is not a photo backup solution - it only stores 1000 photos and deletes them after 30 days.
Is this true? Then why would anybody need so large iCloud plans?
    Thanks.

What you're referring to is Photo Stream, which only stored 1000 of the most recent photos.   With iCloud Photo Library, you can now permanently store your photos and videos on iCloud and sync them across devices.  It's still in BETA though, so it has some quirks and limitations.  With iOS 8.1, you can go into your iCloud settings and enable it.  If you do that, it will replace your camera roll with the iCloud Photo Library and begin uploading ALL of your photos and videos to iCloud. All of these uploads will count towards your photo storage plan, but they will be permanent, as opposed to Photo Stream.  As well as syncing across devices, you can also view them on the web at iCloud.com.   However, the Mac Photos app will not come out until some time in 2015, so right now there are limitations to what you can do with your photos.

  • ICloud Photo Backup is unbearably slow...

I just signed up to increase my cloud storage plan to 500GB so that I could take advantage of the new iCloud Photo Backup service; however, once I enabled it on my Mac I noticed the upload speed was atrociously slow (like dial-up speed). I have FIOS 75/75 Mbps and it's barely making a dent on my bandwidth when I monitor it through my router. Given my photo library is almost 300GB is there another or better way to get this uploaded for the initial backup?

1 - that depends on what setting you have - MyPhotoStream photos are on the device that posted them and in iCloud and are only saved for 30 days in iCloud - If you have your Mac set to automatically import photos form MyPhotoStream then when iPhoto is running the photos are imported into iPhoto events names for the month they are imported - once a photo is in an event it is saved until you delete it from iPhpoto
2 - Not sure wha you mean by safely delete on the phone
or more iCloud info see https://www.apple.com/support/icloud/
and as to your post title - the iCloud backup of your phone is not involved in any way with PhotoStreams nor is it an archive - it is simply a backup of everything on the phone at a point in time and it totally replaces on th next backup - and there is no ability to selectively restore from it
Basically iphoto and icloud are simple - iPhoto does what you tell it to in the preferences - MyPhotoStream is a short term way of sharing photos  between devices using a single Apple ID - SharedPhotoStreams are for sharing photos on  permanent  basis between  list of selected  people

  • Taking photos in dark places

I am quite often required to take photos in dark places using my iPad Mini, is there an App or a device that i can purchase to add light to the darkened areas?

I would suggest you buy a lamp or a flash device. There isn't a way to add so much light digitally, especially when using an iPad mini camera

  • Photo backup size not the same as on Mac

I'm trying to remove files from my mac, and have been particularly frustrated by photos. I have 3752 photos, which have been backed up (just copied) onto a WD 'My passport for mac' as 13.11GB, which seems about the right size.
However, when I look at the 'photo' share on my Mac internal HD, they take up 33.15GB. I can't find 20GB of photos, and I could really do with the space! I have emptied my iPhoto trash but cannot seem to find any reason for the space. I know copies are made if you edit photos (which I rarely do other than rotation) but is there any way to delete these? Or should I just delete my entire iPhoto library and start over with the photos I want?
Any help really welcome! Not sure if this image helps, but its what I'm working from. I can answer any other questions if needed. Thank you in advance!

    Several things
1 - the display you are showing for your Mac is worthless for your purpose - it counts all images - not just photos
2 - what you are doing will not work - if you make a backup  delete images from your Mac you no longer have a backup - a backup is a second exact copy of your main data and as soon as you delete an image from the Mac it only exists in one place - to do wha ti what you need two drives - one to archive photos to and a second to backup to - and you have to be sure your backing up is backing up the archive drive - by default it will not is you use TimeMachine
3 - how are you making the "backup" copy - the only way to have a backup is to have an exact copy of your iphoto library on a separate drive - generally you use software like TimeMachine to do this so it is always updated

  • Does iCloud photo Library just duplicates my iCloud photos Backup? or uses the same copy?

    Hi,
So i want to enable both iCloud backup AND Photo Library. But, i was wondering, how will it be held?

  • Aperture photo backup on 2 external HD's

    Hello.
I would like to back up some or all of my photos on 2 external hard drives - WD My Book Essential 2TB and a WD My Passport 1TB
I'm using Aperture 2.1.4 and have a library size of 244.48GB.  I'm looking for some advice / guidance on how I should go about performing this back up.  I'm wondering if I have to duplicate the master files in Aperture in order to copy them onto 2 seperate devices, can I select only certain albums/files to be backed up, can I save copies of photobooks I've made or is it only master files that should be copied and saved?...... ect.
I have 2 reasons for wanting to do this - one being the most obvious and having a backup of my photos and the second is that I'm not able to download more photos to Aperture - a message comes up stating I need more space.
On a side note I have noticed my computer slowing down while performing functions & shutting down unexpectedly while working in Aperture.  I've looked into my Actiity Monitor and under Disk Usage it states Space Utilized: 317.54GB & Space Free: 2.19GB.  I'm not sure if this is directly related to my troubles but I think I need more free space to run my computer more efficiently.
Now I'm not a computer expert by far so any help or suggestion I can get would be most appreciated.
    Thanks for your time.
    Susanne

Ultimately what I recommend is to from within Aperture select "Relocate Masters" and move Masters to an external drive. However with only 2 GB hard disk drive (HDD) capacity available Aperture may have difficulty performing the operation. So I suggest:
    • Move any non-image data you can off the internal drive, empty the trash, and restart the Mac.
    • Back up Aperture to a Vault on an external drive.
    • From within Aperture select "Relocate Masters" and move Masters to an external drive. Because your HDD is badly overfilled do this one Project at a time.
The Library on an internal drive with Masters/originals referenced on external drives is preferable for anything other than  a small Library.
In the future original images should be separately backed up prior to import into Aperture or any other images management application. IMO after backing up each batch of original images importing that batch into Aperture as a new Project by reference makes by far the most sense.
I suggest the below workflow for future images. Note that most important is that original images from the camera card are copied to two locations before reformatting the card and before importing into Aperture or any other images management application.
Original images never change, so I prefer to manually copy them to two locations asap after capture: one location is a computer drive and the other is an external backup HD that itself gets backed up off site regularly. That assures me that "the pic is in the can." Until two digital files exist on different media I do not consider the pic in the can.
Then the card is reformatted in-camera, not before.
As noted I recommend that folks put the Library on an internal drive and Masters on external drives. To achieve that, after a folder of originals/"Masters" comprising one Project are on the external HDD where they will live, during the Aperture Import process select "Store Files: in their current location"  before clicking on "import checked"
Otherwise the Library usually grows large enough to at some point become problematic like yours is now.
