Photo backup questions and choice of media

I recently bought an external 400GB harddrive connected to my Powerbook via Firewire intended for video-editing. But for now I've used it as a temporary organizing area for all my photos in iPhoto. I have several separate libraries (made possible with the help of "iPhoto buddy") and the biggest libraries are sized at around 10GB, 24GB and a massive 96GB RAW library. The smaller libraries are just sized at a couple of GB each, so they would be easy to transfer to DVD-Rs.
I'm done organizing my photos, so the next step will be to find a suitable way to store and back them all up safely.
1) What would be a good and permanent storage solution for my iPhoto libraries?
The 400GB will be reserved for my video editing, and the internal 80GB drive is too small for all my photos.
An additional external drive is an option, but although drives aren't expensive, the addition of an external enclosure doesn't exactly make it cheap. besides I've read that experts don't recommend hard drives as a means of backup as they're not reliable enough for that.
My powerbook has a dual layer Superdrive which helps, but Dual-Layer DVD-Rs are hard to come by and expensive, and with regular 4.7GB DVD-Rs I would need more than 20 of those for backing up my RAW library (40 DVD-Rs if you consider a second backup for added safety). Doable, but a lot of work.
Other, better suggestions?
It would also be nice to gain regular access to those photos, but as I've pointed out, the internal 80GB drive is too small. The RAW photos only need to be accessible whenever I need to edit something, but the 24GB library consists of all my regular JPG photos.
2) I've read about iPhoto's ability to back up your entire library to DVD, but haven't found answers to the following:
a) Does this procedure just locate all your photos inside the maze of iPhoto folders and dump them to DVDs, or does it actually make a complete backup with the entire structure intact? I've spent considerable time creating albums, smart albums, Keywords, added comments etc. and don't want to loose that.
b) Once a library has been backed up to one or several DVDs (depending on the size of the library), how do I build a new library from those DVDs, hopefully including all the structural information like comments, albums, Keywords etc?

I noticed this post and I am currently experiencing the same issue. I am new to Iphoto and I just 'came back' to MAC after 2 decades away. Do you have any isight or advice here?
Thanks

The back up is supposed to be a rolling back up and therefore may still contain data from previous back ups. To free up space you may wish to delete the back up and start again.

  • I had a windows laptop, and I save files like photos, documents, videos and other things on an external hard drive, and now I want to move those files to the Mac book Pro, and then move those files again to another external hard drive 1T. My question is:

I had a windows laptop, and I save files like photos, documents, videos and other things on an external hard drive, and now I want tomove those files to the Mac book Pro, and then move those files again toanother external hard drive 1T. My question is: Is it possible? Doing this willnot affect the files that I had in windows? No information is lost? or how cani do it?

Connect the external drive to your Mac and drag the files from it to your Mac's internal drive. Then dismount and disconnect the external drive, connect the 1TB external drive, and drag the files from the internal drive onto the external. Nothing will have been deleted from any of the drives up to this point; the files will only have been copied. Verify that the files are readable. There's no reason they shouldn't be; this is just a precaution.
Now if you wish to delete the files from any of the drives, drag them to the Trash, and Empty the Trash while the drive from which they came is still connected. If you disconnect the drive before emptying the Trash, the files you were trying to remove from it won't be deleted. They'll remain in the Trash and continue to take up space on the drive.
Note that if your external drives are in NTFS format, you won't be able to write anything to them or delete anything from them, though you will be able to read and copy the files they contain. The NTFS disk format is read-only to the Mac OS, unless you have a third-party NTFS driver installed. To make your drives cross-platform readable and writable, you must reformat them in the FAT32 or ExFAT format.

If you don't know your rescue email address (you won't be able to view/change/add a rescue email address until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset you can then use the steps half-way down this page to view/change/add a rescue email address for potential future use : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312

  • My iPhone 4S deleted all my text messages  and it said u can retrieve them back if u do backup resort and I did and it completely wiped out all my messages and I just want my text messages and photos back

Someone please help me get back my text messages from my boyfriend that have a lot meaning and my heart is shattered cuz I lost all those text messages.. Please help me get back my messages from him!!

You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore.  When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them.  What program did you use to import them?  Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

  • Lenovo EZ Media & Backup Center and SRT subtitle

When playing movies using the built in DLNA feature, will it be compatible with srt (or any other kind) subtitle?
In other words, if I store a movie with any kind of subtitle inside Lenovo EZ Media & Backup Center, and use a smart tv to play this movie by DLNA, will the subtitles be played?

    Hello all,
When adding new .srt files to the Lifeline device running twonky,  please be sure that the file name matches the video's file name except for the extension.
If the subtitles are not detected, try running a Twonky database repair from the lifeline web interface
(All Features> Media Server > Settings > "Repair Database")  This is mentioned in past official twonky release notes for .srt files.

  • I forgot my security questions and my backup email that it sends the reset to isn't working! Help

I do not know my security questions and my backup email that it sends the reset to isn't working. Help!

If you don't have access to, or don't have, a rescue email account (and you won't be able to change it until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support or Apple to get them reset.
e.g. you can try contacting iTunes Support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Account Management , and then 'Forgotten Apple ID security questions'
or try ringing Apple in your country and ask to talk to the Accounts Security Team : http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
When they've been reset you can then use the steps half-way down this page to change/add a rescue email address for potential future use : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312 . Or you could change to 2-step verification : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5570

  • How to transfer edited photos to PC? Question AND some solutions!

I make photos with my 5s. I Love HDR and Volume Trigger, so I use apple camera app.
I hate 4:3 Ratio, so I edit the photo using the apple photo app (or directly after shooting the photo) to 16:9 and it looks great.
Once a Week I sync with itunes and get my photos to PC (Win7) BUT only the Original Photos appear on PC.
I already read in apple help that the editing is "non-destructive" so only applied in meta data, which will be read correctly on a MAC ...
But I want my edited photos?
Is there an easy way to get them?
I already know follings workaround which I dont really like.
    1. Email the Photos (too time consuming for me)
    2. Use another Photoeditor App and save either lokal in app then transfer only from that app instead of apple photos app. (I love the stock app, especially red eye fix)
    3. Use another camera app which CAN directy save 16:9 photos, so nothing to edit.(here also I love the stock app and didnt find anything compareable, I already own procamera 7 and camera+)
    4. edit photos on PC and s**t on apple (actual my favorite)
    5. Use Dropbox (auto upload function will only upload originals). On the other hand if I choose in dropbox manually photos to be uploaded the edited ones will be there (my favorite #2)
I included the solutions for other ppl. with same problem to let em know.
    Any other solutions?

Have you tried after editing the photo, and it is in full view, do a screen shot? The saved screen shot should appear as a new photo.

  • I backup my phone to my mac and heaps of my old photos came back and now i can't delete them HELP?!

i can't delete my photos after contacting to my mac

Do you mean, you connected the iPhone to your mac and imported the photos to iPhoto or the Photos.app?  And the import panel does not let you delete the photos from your device after importing?
Then you have probably iCloud Photo Library Beta enabled on the phone. In that case you have to delete the photos directly on the device and cannot delete them from the import panel.
