Photo backup size not the same as on Mac

I'm trying to remove files from my mac, and have been particularly frustrated by photos. I have 3752 photos, which have been backed up (just copied) onto a WD 'My passport for mac' as 13.11GB, which seems about the right size.
However, when I look at the 'photo' share on my Mac internal HD, they take up 33.15GB. I can't find 20GB of photos, and I could really do with the space! I have emptied my iPhoto trash but cannot seem to find any reason for the space. I know copies are made if you edit photos (which I rarely do other than rotation) but is there any way to delete these? Or should I just delete my entire iPhoto library and start over with the photos I want?
Any help really welcome! Not sure if this image helps, but its what I'm working from. I can answer any other questions if needed. Thank you in advance!

Several things
1 - the display you are showing for your Mac is worthless for your purpose - it counts all images - not just photos
2 - what you are doing will not work - if you make a backup  delete images from your Mac you no longer have a backup - a backup is a second exact copy of your main data and as soon as you delete an image from the Mac it only exists in one place - to do wha ti what you need two drives - one to archive photos to and a second to backup to - and you have to be sure your backing up is backing up the archive drive - by default it will not is you use TimeMachine
3 - how are you making the "backup" copy - the only way to have a backup is to have an exact copy of your iphoto library on a separate drive - generally you use software like TimeMachine to do this so it is always updated

  • The time on my firefox browser is not correct. How do I set the time zone for Firefox? It is not the same as my mac computer setting?

I am using a hotmail acount with bigpond. The time that it says I sent an email is out by 11 hours... can you please tell me how to set my firefox browser to be at the right time? My mac is set at the right time zone...

I was able to do what you suggested, and the time listed in the code field was correct. However, when I sent a test email to myself on the bigpond site, it said it was received at 8:04am when it was actually 18:04. So there is an error of more than half a day. I have a snapshot of the screen if that is helpful. I asked Bigpond about this and they said it was a Firefox problem... Please advise.

Looks like you restored your backup file to her phone. If you didn't back up your wife's phone first, then the data is gone, sorry.

  • In iphoto, how do i save a photo after editing, in the same or higher file size, it's saves in a lower size

in iphoto, how do i save a photo after editing, in the same or higher file size, it's saves in a lower size

It's rather more complicated that this.
iPhoto is a lossless editor. You don't lose any quality on your shot in iPhoto.
The file size you see reported is the size of your iPhoto Preview: this is what gets used if you access the data via a media browser. It's a "good-enough-for-most-uses" version of the shot. Email it, upload to websites, use it in Presentation, Word processing file etc
If you want to set the quality yourself then Export the photo using the File -> Export command.
You can choose to export to Jpeg, Tiff or png. Tiff is lossless but the file sizes are up to 10 times larger. Jpeg allows you to choose different qualities: High, Medium or low. The difference is the amount of compression involved. High quality means very little compression. It's not unusual for photos exported at this setting to have a larger file size than the original.
Which setting you choose depends on the use you intend. Further editing, printing then high is important. Sending to Facebook? Well low will do just fine there as they're going to trash the file anyway.
But the key point: the file size only becomes an issue when you export.

  • IPhone photo stream photos import to macbook Pro but photos in albums on the same phone do not?

iPhone photo stream photos import to macbook Pro but photos in albums on the same phone do not?
When I connected my iPhone to the MB-Pro and imported the photos, all the ones on the phone in "the photo stream" came in fine,
But I have 4 "albums" containing different photos. How do I get those photos into iPhoto ... short of emailing them to myself?

When you connect your iPhone to the computer and import, all photos in the camera roll will be imported, but not the photos in other albums, for example, albums that have been synced to your iPhone. Sp, to import other photos from synced albums, you have to save these photos to the camera roll or use iTunes Photo Sharing.

  • My SWF is not the same size as my Flash document size

My SWF is not the same size as my Flash document size. How can I get it to be the same.
    Thanks

I spent a little time trying to figure out if there's some setting anywhere that might explain this, but couldn't find anything.  That doesn't mean there isn't any--I just don't know of any.
I'm wondering if you could take a screen shot that shows the stage size versus the swf size when it plays?  It will help to make sure the problem is what I think you have it explained it to be.
Does this happen in all files you create or is it occuring just in one particular file?  What version of Flash are you using?  If you can make your file available maybe someone can see if the problem remains when they open it--possibly even track down some cause.  I am unable to open CS4 files (don't have it), but if it's an earlier version I can take a look.
If you are using CS4, have you updated it to the latest release (10.0.2, I believe)?  There were numerous bugs when CS4 was released, though I don't know if this would be one of them.

  • HT201077 Why are my photos on my iphone and ipad not the same?

My camera roll and photo stream on my iphone 4 and ipad 2 are not the same.  I have the same apple id for both and both devices are running ios 7.0.4.
    Any ideas?

The camera roll contains photos actually taken on your device, or saved from text messages, emails, websites, etc.  Because of this you shouldn't expect both devices to have the same photos in the camera roll.
The my photo stream album is also usually differerent on your devices.  This happens because photo stream photos only remain in iCloud for 30 days (even though they stay on your devices longer).  When you enable photo stream on a device, it can only receive photo stream photos still in iCloud, which are those from the last 30 days.  A consequence of this is that unless you enabled photo stream on both devices within 30 days of each other, one is likely to end up with fewer photo stream photos than the other.

Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown asBackups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Reboot and it should go away.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size with the largest at the top. It may take a few minutes for ODS to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • IWeb 08 and Photo Download Size not sticking to Original (Full Quality)

I am using iWeb 08 to post personal webpages and photo galleries but even when I select *"Original (Full Quality)"* under Photo Download Size in the inspector it slips off full size and make smaller pictures. I almost always want to offer full resolution image to my friends and family. Is there a way to make this work more reliably? Is it being fixed?

I found in this iWeb test pertained more to the image pixel dimensions than the jpg compression level of the downloadable file as you found out.
    Happy New Year
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. If you don't have the media, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able toauthorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.

  • How to manage multiple sizes of the same image?

I recently took up LightRoom for all the good things it does. One of the things I need to do, however, is to create and manage multiple sizes of the same image needed for different purposes. I always found this cumbersome. I totally expected that the LR library would offer a solution for this but I looked and I didn't see anything. Sure you can export and resize in the process but then you're on your own. Am I missing something? Isn't there a better way? What does Adobe have in mind for best practices and how do you handle this?

I can't speak for 99jon, but when I need multiple sizes, I export at the desired sizes, and then make use of the exported photos (upload, e-mail, whatever) and then delete the exports. Thus, there's really no need for me to keep track of the photo at this specific size, knowing that if I ever need it again -- unlikely -- I can regenerate it with the export pre-set, so I put no effort (zero!) into keeping track of photos at different sizes.
The idea of adding it back into the catalog doesn't get me excited, and I would advise against it. I don't need this, and I don't see the benefit of keeping this particular size export for the long-term. As I said, I can always recreate it — but maybe you have such a need to keep these exports long-term and recreating it at a later point in time doesn't meet your needs? Can you explain?
By the way, you can't resize a virtual copy, so that won't work here. The only time you can resize is on export.

  • My exported edited image in TIFF-16bit is not the same as my edited RAWfile

Hi! First and foremost my problem is not speed. I have learn to deal with Aperture's slowness while editing or exporting images and not real time brush strokes and occassional crashes. It thought me PATIENCE!
My problem are my exported image from Aperture, The images are not rendered the same exact way as the RAW image I edited (quality-sharpness-saturation-definition-etc.) in Aperture. The rendering is WAY OFF. I even exaggerate in Sharpness and contrast in rendering my RAW images yet my exported (both TIFF -16 bit or JPEG orig. size) are way softer than the one I originally rendered in RAW at Aperture 3.0.2. Even the COLORS are OFF-saturation, luminance, etc. It's not my Monitor or my Eyes, I asked 3 friends to help me validate my concern. After viewing my exported (TIFF or Jpeg) images on an external preview browser, I re-import them to Aperture and put them- (the exported images) in the same Projects where the Original RAW file is located, then I carefully compare them in Full Screen view, I can totally say that they're not the same quality, sharpness, saturation, tonal value!
It's very frustrating to experience this. I work really hard on every single image, I tolerate the sluggishness, the crashes, All I want are my image output render the way I rendered them in RAW file in regards to sharpness, color value and just the overall look that I wanted in my images. BTW I just downloaded the recent March 22, 2011 update. But still it's still having this problem.
Please help me all you good knowledgable, compassionate Aperture experts help an Aperture user in distress.
Thanks for your time. I appreciate any positive feedback and help.
    JC

    Richard,
You are not going crazy, this is a well documented throughout the web
Sorry, but the web is not documentation for Aperture.
I cannot understand why Apple have not resolved this
For one, it takes time to fix a bug, and the have to know about it. Have you told Apple that this is a problem through Aperture feedback? Second, someone at Aperture has to prioritize what their engineers work on. Since this does not seem to be a problem for very many people (including the well-regarded contributors whom you were trying to offend in your other post on this topic), it may turn out that it has a low priority for Apple.
    Please Apple sort this out!
Apple does not contribute to this forum and there's no reason to believe they will read this particular message and make a bug report.
