Photo Books and Sharpening

I'm unsure about how to approach sharpening of individual photos for my photo books. Here's the workflow I follow to print books at Shared Ink:
Import RAW images into Lightroom 2.
Color Correct/Sharpen images within the Develop Module
Export RAW images as Tiffs at max res and import into an InDesign template created by me. Inside of InDesign I resize photos to the desired size.
Create a PDF of the book and then convert PDFs to JPGS to be uploaded to Shared Ink. (They only accept JPGS from a program like InDesign.)
Here are my questions:
In step 3, when I export RAW images as Tiffs to place into InDesgin, what sort of Export Sharpening should I be using? LR has matte and Glossy, and then 3 strengths of sharpening. I generally print on matte paper so I know I could use matte.
When I finally decide on the size of my images within InDesign, do I need to re-export each image from Lightroom at the correct size? I normally include 100s of images in my books and it would take quite a while to do this.
Thanks, any advice is much appreciated!

When I export from LR2 and apply sharpening, do you recommend exporting at the full size and then sizing down in InDesign? Or would you recommend saving each image at the correct size from LR2 at the outset?
For the test, I would do a page or two each way.  I think you will find that you can't tell a material difference and thus you can quit thinking about how time consuming it would be (and it would be horrendous in my opinion).  So maybe your test is on 12x12 pages with a background image and three small images on top, one greater than original, one at original and one smaller than original.  Then make a separate page for the following samples:
1.     Export the 4 images from LR with no output sharpening at original size.
2.     Export the 4 images from LR with Matt, Standard output sharpening at original  size.
3.     Export the 4 images from LR with Matt, Low output  sharpening at original  size.
4.     Export the 4 images from LR with no output sharpening at approximately the sizes for the sample page (then use them at exactly the exported size).
5.     Export the 4 images from LR with Matt,  Standard output sharpening at approximately the sizes for the sample page (then use them at exactly  the exported size).
6.     Export the 4 images from LR with Matt, Low output  sharpening at approximately the sizes for the sample page (then use them at exactly  the exported size).
This should give you a good idea as to whether output sharpening has a material impact on books printed from SharedInk.  It may not be a good test for other printing but that's OK.  The idea is to find out what is best for this particular book process for YOU.
Keep me posted.

  • I have created 2 photo books and would like to merge them into one. How can I do this?

I have created 2 photo books and would like to merge them together.  How can i do this?

You can't just merge them. You will have to add the photos of Book B to Book A and add new pages to A to duplicate those in B.
NOthing was said about copying and pasting - you add the photos from book B to book a, add pages to bbok a and recreate teh pages in book a
Another way would be to print book B to PDF sending the PDF to iPhoto and then placing the pages as full page images in book A

  • How to publish a photo book and slideshow in iWeb

Is it possible to (or how do you) publish a photo book and slideshow in iWeb created either in Aperture or iPhoto?

Here's an example of E Books. They're created in iWork and loaded into iWeb as a compressed PDF for download. The photo of the front cover is used for the link.

For a larger file, you can upload it to a folder on your server and create a link to it from your website.

  • HELP!!!!  All my photo books and slideshows are GONE!!!!!

Ran iPhoto 6 on my iMac, and to my horror, found that all my photo books and slide shows (I had tens of them, almost as many as I had albums) are gone!!!! No, I didn't backup my iPhoto library.
Is there any way on God's green earth to restore these? I worked hundreds of hours on them!!!!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
First try launching iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options, ignoring the one regarding orphaned photos.
If that doesn't work you'll have to start over with a fresh library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
Once this is completed you can delete the Originals folder from the desktop and the iPhoto Llibrary folder. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
In the future I recommend you make a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto file after each import and after doing a lot of editing and organizing in the library. Then if you experience a similar crash all you need to do is replace the damaged database file with the backup copy and you'll be back to the same place in the library as when you make the backup. See the Tip at the end of my signature.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How do I take my Photoshop Elements 11 photo book and get it printed at Shutterfly or similar?

I have just spend 40 hours working on a beautiful photo book and I cannot find how to send it to Shutterfly for printing.  I selected the Shutterfly option when i started the book, and thought there would be a simple "upload and print" command somewhere.  I can't find any help for this on line.

While you are in the edit mode of your photobook, you should see three buttons along the bottom: Order, Save, and Close. Clicking Order will send the book to Shutterfly for printing.

I have now recently downloaded 10.0.2 which is confusing in itself, as, as far as I can ascertain that is actually version 11, but I'm not even sure about that.
Version 10.0.2 is the newest version and the successor to GarageBand '11 (version 6.0.5).
The '11 is referring to the iLife '11 suit of multimedia application - the older GarageBand was a part of this bundle.
Have a look at Edgar's graphical enhanced manuals, the explain very detailed how things work and why. You can buy them as iBooks from the iBook store or directly from the page:

  • Creating a photo book and photo in RIGHT side pane are not in order. Making it hard to make my book

I am trying to make a Book. I have alot of photos and i dont like how iphoto is not putting them all in. So i created my own book and added alot of pages with 4-11 pic. average per page. however, when i try to add my photos from the right side panel they are not in order. i can not figure out for the life of me how to get them into order and why that are out of order in the first place

With '11 the photo in the book pane are in data order - the only suggestion I've seen is to put them in an album and order them the way you want and use the batrch change time and date to make the date order the way you want to see them
I've not messed with this and am not sure how you get back to the correct dates after you are done
I consider this a bug and suggest reporting to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback

  • Help!! How can I again purchase my photo books and calendars?

Puchase of calendars and photo books is no longer possible from my computer. I have an iMAC, Tiger 10.4.11. !!!!! It seems incredibly stupid to me that I can no longer purchase my own iphoto books and calendars and that Apple, has never warned me or offered me a solution... I asked in the local apple store, and they said my computer is too old (5years) - but I think that is just bad customer's service! I need to solve my problem... anyone?

It's got nothing to do with the age of your Mac, it's the version of your software.
And of course you can purchase your own books etc, just not from Apple.

Have you tried returning a photo book that has a binding problem? I just ordered 2 large hardcover photobooks and one arrived with the inside binding messed up. Do you know how this can get corrected? They were over $80 and it seems they should not be flawed. I would appreciate any tips. lindajenkins

    Karen:
Regarding the dpi prefs that Ricktoronto mentioned download and run Pref Setter. Bring up the iPhoto preference file in it and the do a search for dpi in the search field at the top. The three settings you want to change to 300 are BookTargetImageDPI, BookTargetImageMediumDPI and BookTargetImageSmallDPI. After changing the current values to 300 do a save and quit Pref Setter. That's all you need to do.
You might want to think about these numbers. If you want an 1 page picture in a book it will be about 8 x 10.6. At 300 dpi you should have 2400 x 3200 pixels. To get a 4x6 scanned image so it will be close to 300 dpi if enlarged to the 8x10.6 (Apple uses 4:3 ratio and that would make it 8 x 10.6 or so) you'd need to scan it at 3200/6 or about 530 dpi.
All of my books have been made with digital images from my camera that ranged from 1600 x 1200 to 2272 x 1704 and all of the photos came out very good. All of my books have been in the Story Book theme.
