Photo Booth ignores external iSight

Hello people
Ever since my upgrade to Leopard, Photo Booth no longer uses my external firewire iSight camera.
Previously, Photo Booth would use the external iSight camera, when the built-in was unavailable because the notebook lid was closed. Now it just says the camera is off.
Both iMovie and iChat AV will happily use the external iSight camera. If I try to use a Video Input in a Quartz Composition, the external iSight is ignored just as it is in Photo Booth.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Best regards,
Anders Borum

two things to try:
(1) With Photo Booth (v2) running, unplug your external iSight, wait about 5 seconds, and reconnect.
(2) If you still do not see the camera view, turn external iSight off (rotate the front of the lens barrel), wait about 5 seconds, and turn iSight on again.
Although I am not using an iNtel Mac, the first one got me a dark image, and the second one got my external iSight working correctly.

  • Photo Booth issue with isight

    Hi:
I'm running OS X (10.4.11) on my personal MacBook Pro. When I open Photo Booth, I just get a black screen but I'm not able to take any pictures/videos. The iSight in not turning on (all options are grayed out). However the cam does work when I use iChat or Skype video chat. That eliminates the hardware factor.
I have followed some of the suggestions here, such as creating a new user, deleting some of the .plist files, repair permissions, etc.; but still no success.
Are there any other suggestions to fix this problem and get Photo Booth back to work??
    Thanks
    Marcos

    Hello Eric,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It is not likely that anyone has tested Photo Booth on an older Mac equiped with an iSight, but as soon as someone does, I am sure you will read about it here.
As explained in the "The Apple PhotoBooth, how do you get it?" thread, Photo Booth is only available bundled with

Has anyone tested the Photo Booth on an older Mac equiped with an iSight? Does it work or is it tied to the new iMac? Are there any Preferences where you can choose your input device?

  • Photo Booth acting weird/iSight goes black in Skype

When I open Photo Booth and if I don't take a picture for a few minutes, it creates a still image and I can't get out of it.. If I try to take a picture, the still image shows up in the tray no matter what. The image doesn't go away until I close Photo Booth and reopen it, but it does it again and again.
Also, in Skype when I'm in a video chat with someone, every few seconds, my webcam goes black for a few seconds and then returns to normal, but it keeps doing that.

Some things you can try in any order you like:
    (1) If you can make a video but it does not play back correctly when you click the black one in the Photo Booth tray, try restarting Mac and test again.
    (2) Restart Mac.  Then use your MBP's Disk Utility to repair permissions.
    (3) Restart Mac.  Then use your MBP's Disk Utility to verify the disk.  If DU says you need to repair your disk, you can use Lion Recovery's Disk Utility to repair your boot (startup) disk.
    (4) If you have not already done so, use the http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 suggestions to verify that this is not a user-specific issue.  Don't use a "Guest" account for this test.  If your Mac only has one account, create a new user account for testing.
Also test more than one app and more than one user generated backdrop.
    (5) It the problem is specific ONLY to one particular user-generated backdrop in EVERY user account you test. the backdrop may have been damaged somehow.
In such case, I would delete the user-generated backdrop and replace it with the version from the original or a known-working backup.  If you did not keep the original you used to create the problem backdrop, and if you have no working backup, recreate it.
Note: if someone suggests that you reset your Photo Booth preferences, understand that doing so will delete all your user-generated backdrops.  You will need to add them back to Photo Booth in order to use then.  Therefore, if you have concerns about the item (5) suggestion to replace your user-generated backdrop, be aware that resetting Photo Booth preferences may result in the same concern.

  • Isight or photo booth trouble....

When using photo booth via my isight, one of the filters is not longer working correctly. The "pop art" filter used to display four pics in four different colours. Now it only displays one picture in one colour.
Has anyone ever heard of this befor?

  • Brand new MBP, iSight works for Photo Booth, but not iChat

Hello. I just transferred all my stuff to my new MBP. When I try to video chat in iChat, I get the 'camera in use by another application.'
I opened Photo Booth and the iSight works fine.
I deleted the iChat prefs files, but it did not solve the issue.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Photo Booth will not open

I just tried to use Photo Booth for the first time in about a month. I get a message telling me that the isight camera is being used by another application. There are no applications open except photo booth.
    Any ideas.

    HI Bernie,
    Try here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=291550
Photo Booth requires an iSight camera (built-in or external), USB video class (UVC) camera, or FireWire DV camcorder; and an Intel or PowerPC G5 processor. Backdrop effects require an Intel Core Duo or faster processor. Backdrop effects when using a DV camcorder require fixed focus, exposure, and white balance. <--- <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/

  • Use Canon Powershot G6 with Photo Booth?

I have a brand new Mac Pro running OS 10.5.7 with photo booth, but no isight camera. I'd like to use my Canon Powershot G6 with Photo Booth, but when I plug in my camera, via USB cable, and launch Photo Booth, there is just a blank picture window.
I'd be very grateful for any suggestions of how to make this work (if possible) or where I might look for a solution.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Z

    Hi,
In Many apps that can access cameras it is about the resolution the software that the app restricts the camera to, rather than the abilities of the camera.
You may find that some cameras such as those that connect by Firewire may produce a more pleasing picture rather than being at a different resolution.
There is not much difference in External USB cameras over the Internal one on those Macs that have Internal iSights.
iGlasses is cheap and works for a7 day trial before you have to commit yourself and can access some features and tweak the video from Web cams in various Apps

  • External iSight not recognized by Photo Booth, MBP, lid closed

When there is an external iSight and an external screen is attached to my MacBook Pro (where the lid is closed), Photo Booth does not seem to recognize it. I can use the camera with iChat, though.
Any ideas for a trick to make it work?

    Hello Rainer Joswig

  • External iSight, Photo Booth

My external iSight works just fine with iChat. But in Photo Booth, it shows only a black screen.
Photo Booth help says it will work with an external camera.
I am trying to use it on my G4 with Tiger. Is that the problem?

In that case go to you Home Folder > Library > Preferences and delete the com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist and try Photo Booth again
If that deoes not work use this FAQ http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1486891&tstart=0
It is about Reinstalling iChat but Use the Hard Way and the PAcifist option to Install Photo Booth from the Install DIsk.
Also note the last paragraph and install the Combo Installer for the OS level you are at to Update Photo Booth.

Last week i got photo booth from an intel imac and i will like to know if photo booth works with an external iSight. When i open the application it says that it cannot open beacuse there is no camera attached, if you conect an iSight will it work?

    Victor:

  • ISight not showing when Photo Booth is open? Help :S?

Hey guys, when I open Photo Booth, my iSight doesn't even respond to it, and doesn't even turn on. There is no green light or anything. It works when I use iChat or any other application that uses the iSight but not photo booth. I have done all the trouble shooting and reseting but still nothing. In the system profiler it shows that my iSight is recognized and that it is there and working, but why not photo booth? It has worked before too.
    Help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a lot in advance
    D2LMD

    You're welcome, D2LMD
I have tried all of the things you just listed and still no go...
Because your iSight works in every user account you try with every application (except Photo Booth), the problem is definitely in your software. Having reinstalled the application itself, the software problem must lie in some of the system or QuickTime ancillary files that Photo Booth uses.
To remedy this problem, I can offer three choices for your consideration:
    (1) Backup your important files and then reinstall all of your Mac software using the "reinstall" or "restore" disk that came with your Mac. After that is done, repair permissions and then use your Mac's Software Update... to be sure you are using the latest version of your Apple software. Finish with another permission repair after the updates are done, and then test to see if Photo Booth is working.
    (2) Ignore your non-working Photo Booth. Instead, use some other app to capture images:
    • If you do not need Photo Booth's "effects", some alternative apps that can
capture snapshots and movie/video clips are included in this list.
    • Apps that have with "effects" similar to those in Photo Booth include
Funny Photographer, Freak Show, and WebcamTweaker.
    (3) If nothing else works for you, follow Apple's ultimate suggestion from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 and contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

  • Photo Booth does not turn on iSight

iChat and iMovie will both turn it on, so I know it's not a hardware problem, but I can't get Photo Booth to turn it on. If i press the button to snap a picture, it goes through the motions, "Flashes", and I get a black picture since the iSight never turned on.
Things I have tried so far
    repair permissions
    full restart
deleted PH's .plist file in my home directory
    reinstalled from the original DVD
and finally, logged in as a new user, where it still failed, so I know it's not a problem in my Home directory.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else I can try?
Oh, and yes, it used to work fine, but I haven't had a need for PH in several months.
Thanks in advance for any help, or suggestions on what might be a better forum to pose this in if this wasn't the best choice for a software problem!

    Welcome, J Coffle
I think you are in a good place, but I imagine you will only think it is the right place if you get your problem solved. At any rate, if I can think of a better place, I will let you know.
First, what is "PH"? Assuming you mean "Photo Booth", I will offer a couple of suggestions for your consideration. If I am wrong, stop here and post back the correct meaning.
You have tried several good things. Here are a few more you can consider.
    (1) Disconnect all peripherals while you do your testing to rule out possible conflicts.
    (2) Check for any running applications, Login Items, or widgets that can use your iSight. (It is easy to forget widgets like Mirror in your Dashboard.) As explained in Apple's iSight "Your camera is in use by another application" message, iSight can be used by one application at a time.
    (3) Try every relevant Built-in iSight suggestion in How to Troubleshoot iSight.
    (4) If resetting or the other troubleshooting suggestions do correct your problem, try the following:
    - Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    - Repair permissions.
    - Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update (PPC).
    - Perform another Permissions Repair.
    - Then check Photo Booth again with no other iSight apps running.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying the latest Combo Updates.
If you can recall anything significant that might have changed since Photo Booth last worked, what changed would be helpful to know if you must post back for more ideas.

Not user account specific, tried different account and the same problem persists

    Welcome to Discussions, Stanley Chung
Sorry you are still having problems even after trying the good suggestions from Ralph and Boomer.
I did not see specifically from your posts that your iSight worked before upgrading to Snow Leopard, but I am inferring from your topic's title that it did. If your iMac came with Snow Leopard installed, please post and tell us whether you erased the disk and reinstalled all your iMac's software before you started using it. If you upgraded your iMac to Snow Leopard, consider the following.
    (1) Until you get iSight working, do all your testing while no peripherals other than keyboard/mouse are attached to your iMac. To eliminate all possibility of any conflict external to your Mac, be sure you also disconnect any wireless devices (iPod, printer, etc) connected to your system.
    (2) If you still have problems with all you have tried, it seems to me that you must have a software issue. You might try uninstalling Skype and VMWare and testing again to see if those installations are causing a conflict.
    (3) Check the support sites for all of your third party software to be sure there are no known Snow Leopard issues and that you are using the latest compatible versions.
    (4) If the problem still exists and you have not already tried this, reinstall Snow Leopard, repairing permissions immediately before and after the reinstall.
    (5) If your problem remains and System Profiler still shows your inbuilt iSight as a USB device, I suggest you backup all important files, erase your disk, reinstall all Apple software, and test to see if iSight works properly. Once it does, you can install any necessary peripherals and third-party apps one-at-a-time, testing after each addition to see if one of them is causing problems.

  • Isight works with photo booth but not in ichat or google talk or skype?

isight works with photo booth but not in ichat or google talk or skype?

    Hi
Is this an Internal or External iSight ?
In iChat, in the Video Menu (This is to the right of Buddies and may read Audio) is Camera Enabled Ticked ?
If it reads Audio open the Connection Doctor from that same menu.
In the connection Doctor open the Capabilities tab
Does it say your Internet Connection is too slow ?
At this point I would need to know which iChat Version.
However also look in the View Menu.
Is Show VIdeo Status ticked ?  (this shows green Icons next to your Buddy Pic and those of your Buddies
Next go to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Video Section
Do you see a preview here ?
    Re: GoogleTalk
Have you enabled TALK on your Google Account Settings ?
You need to have a Google Mail ID (Not any other sort of Google ID)
Have you downloaded the Intel only Web Browser Plug-in to do Video in a  Web Browser.
