i have a folder of images which opens in lightroom, all of the changes are apparent...but there are questions marks on all of the images. evidently by renaming in bridge? i screwed up the relationship to the files. if i sync i'll lose all work i've done. if i choose find file i have no idea which file is which...and there are 1300 files. i can't export even though i can see the images as i want them...any ideas? i don't want to have to rework an entire wedding. i tried swapping to a slightly older catalog but then i lost all kinds of changes to other work. so now i'm back with the current catalog and problem.

You can fix them one by one. But the best way is as I described - use Bridge to return the filename to what it was before. If that's not working, I wonder if you renamed the files more than once in Bridge. Another thought is that each time you do a batch rename, the preserve option means that the current filename becomes the preserved filename, while the old preserved filename becomes the real filename - ie they swap over. Maybe that's confusing you and giving you a mix of current and preserved?
Think of it like this. The LR catalogue is like the computer at a bookstore. By changing the names outside LR, it's like someone has sneaked into the bookstore overnight and changed round all the dust jackets. So how is the sales assistant going to be able to find the right books?
That said, I do think LR should do a better job and help out much more. Instead of merely matching on filenames, it should be much more intelligent and use images' EXIF data to try to recognize images whose filenames the user has screwed up. People keep getting caught out by this - but they soon learn.

I receive the following message when I try to play a song from my library in Itunes:
This song could not be used because the origional file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?
The songs that were purchased from Itunes play with no problem but all the others have this message. There are thousands of songs stored and it would be impossible to do this for every song. Any reason why this happed and any suggestions on how to get these songs to play without locating every file?

Apps wanting to access my location when not in use (and not giving the option to turn it off)

For most apps, I can choose to share my location 1) not at all; 2) when the app is in use (my favourite); 3) always (even when not in use).
Why do some apps not offer the second option?
For instance, I want to use an app that locates the nearest automatic external defibrillator (if someone has a cardiac arrest) but I can only use the app when I allow the app to access my location all the time. Given the fact that I will use this app perhaps only once every 15 years, I see no point in giving them my location for the next 15 years! That's just a waste of battery power and also a breach of my privacy.
Second example: Apple's own weather app. I check the weather maybe once every month. I do not want the app to locate me all the time. But I can only choose between option 1) and 3) above.
Is there a technical reason apps work like this? Or are they just sneakily trying to get as much information about me as possible?

everything rudegar said is right on. Still, 10% overnight is more than you would expect - so something is still running. try-
double click the home button, and see what apps are listed as recent. one or more of them might be still churning away. it is a good idea to close those out fully every night. Any of those apps with notifications or location services may be checking in every now and then and using your power.
you mentioned airplane mode is 'off'. this may be a terminolgy thing - but having airplane mode 'off', means that the radios are on. WiFi, and 3 G if you have it. turning airplane mode "on" turns off the radios.
with everything off on mine - (except I leave the wifi on) - i use 2 or 3% overnight.
But if you really want it off - do what rudegar says.

Songs in Itunes not playing - No Original File found

For some reason my ITUNES wont play my songs located on my computer. It has a pop up that says the Original file could not be found.

Is there anyway to give my wife access to my Aperture photos if she only uses iPhoto (not Aperture)?

If we share a wifi network..how can she get access to copy some of my Aperture photos (she only has iPhoto). It seems all my Aperture photos are stored inside the Aperture Library (on my MBP). But she can't really go in there over the wifi I'm guessing..since she doesn't have Aperture...

If you use the workflow I recommend your wife can access the backups of your originals from before they were entered into Aperture (store the backups in a location accessible to her). Of course, those originals will not have any edits performed in Aperture.
Suggested workflow steps:
• Use a FW card reader or MBP slot to copy to a file folder on the SSD or hard drive. With fast camera cards copy times are quick, but cheap slow cards can slow this step down a lot.
• Eject and physically disconnect the card reader.
• Back up that file folder on external drive(s).
• Only after backup is complete and verified, reformat the camera card in-camera.
• Import images into Aperture from the file folder on the SSD or hard drive.
IMO backing up images prior to import into Aperture or any other images app is an essential step for a competent workflow.

Fan running at high when cpu not being used, Macbook not responding - Help!

Please help!
Quite often now when I leave my macbook for an a few hours (the screen goes to sleep but not the computer), I come back to the fan running at full speed and then when I touch the trackpad, I can move the mouse around, but nothing responds (i.e. when I move the mouse over the dock, the dock doesn't pop up...and I can't click anything on the desktop). So I have to hold down the power button to shut it off and then restart the computer. Then it works fine, but if I leave it for a while and come back, half the time I come back I encounter this problem again.
Any help?

Check your activity monitor. Sounds like you have a program running in the back ground your not aware of.
You might also try to reset the SMC and/or PRAM.

How to tell which Indexes are not being used?

We are a large development shop and have many customers. Our database design is very generic so that it works for all of our customers. Each night we use an SSIS ETL process to bring down large amounts of data from the iSeries into SQL. One
particularily large customer takes a very long time and we are looking for ways to speed up thier data import and transformation. I would like to see which indexes he does not use and possibly remove them. Each night we fully repopulate hundreds of staging
and ods tables and incrementally delete and repopulate the days work for a handful of history type tables. Removing some indexes off of the large tables could make a big impact.
How can i tell which indexes the customer does not use?

My macbook overheats when not in use, has anyone else had this problem?

Over the last nine months, I have had 5 different Macbook pros. The problem always seems to be the same. it starts to overheat and then will not turn on. It begins getting hot whilst not being used and not being left on or on charge.
I have had enough of this, they cannot tell me what is wrong and just offer to change the machine. This last machine is only about 4 months old.
I am not sure what to do about this.

On some of my files there is a ! in front of it, if I try to play the song, I get an error message; "The song "_____" could not be used, because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" Then when I click "Locate", I get nothing.

I get a menu with folders that say "catroot" and other folders which names I cannot remember, but I scroll PAST the file folders, & it's just a bunch of ".DLL" files.....I don't understand what any of the names of the folders mean...it's frustr8ing-coz this is my 2nd iTouch, my 1st one got stolen & I can't afford2buy my music back at this time & i NEVER before had a single problem with losing song file locations.

I was not complete clear.
Since you never changed the settings in the advanced section of iTunes preferecnes, you have to chech that your music is really in the location setted in the folders reported in the advanced section. If not you have 2 ways: reset the position of this folders or in the actual disk organisation or in the pointing on the preferences.
If you press the reset button you just give to itunes its default setting as for the position of the music files: probably this will be a good choice if you have never changed any default preference.
But before I would check the folders and see if the songs are really there

Well what happened is the pathname to the song has changed slightly.
For instance if the song was located say c\:Windows\User\Mary\Music\iTunesFolder
and now it's c:\Windows\User\MaryXray\Music\iTunesFolder
I'm assuming here your music was replaced in the Music folder like on the old hard drive, that iTunesFolder was simply copied over in whole.
So to fix things, you go into the iTunes Folder in your Music Folder and look for a iTunes Music Library .XML file and open it in a Text Program that has "find and replace" ability.
You find the partial pathname of the old drive and you replace ALL instances of it with the new pathname.
so \Windows\User\Mary would be changed to
\Windows\User\MaryXray
Save the file and reopen iTunes.

I moved my iTunes library to my external hard drive some time ago and I followed the directions listed here on the apple support page. It did copy my library and now is on my hard drive... I can open iTunes and use it to sync all of my devices but I would like to play my music... I can see all of my music files but can not play them if I click on an album or song it says the following: "(file name) could not be used because the original file cannot be found. Would you like to locate it?" I click locate but do not know where to go from there? I need a way to access all files and not to hunt down one at a time on my hard drive... I am pretty sure I deleted the original library to make space on my internal drive which was the reason for moving it. See Make a split library portable. Move all of the bits of the library together in the the correct shape and it should work. Or undo exactly what you did and then start over.
If you're a former Windows user don't try merging two folders together that have the same name by dropping one into the same folders as the other, as that goes badly on a Mac.

Library Lost - Please HeIp I tried updating my old ipod & now all 10,000 songs in my library have an ! next to them and I get the error message "song " " could not be used because the original file could not be found" on every song I try to play

Please help - this morning I tried updating one of my old ipods for my wife (this ipod hasn't been updated in 2-3 years). I plugged it into my pc, it was recognized and the software updated. I created a new playlist and tied to sync the ipod. This ipod had never been used on this pc/itunes since the pc is only 2 years old. When I tried to sync the ipod it stated that it would have to erase all the old songs on the ipod prior to syncing. I clicked ok and it proceeded to wipe out the old ipod and sync the new playlist (~1000 songs). When the sync was complete there were only 6 songs from the new playlist (all purchased this morning from itunes) on the ipod and to my horror all ~10,000 song on my pc in itunes now have a ! next to them. Only my recent purchases from itunes do not. When I click on a song with the ! I get the error message "the song " " could not be used because the original file could not be found." How do I correct this issue - I am scared to hook my ipads or other ipods to my pc for fear of losing everything?!?!? I spent 100s of hours burning the 10,000 songs from my cd collection and do not want to have to do it again.

This "original file cannot be found" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

Because the location for each song in your library is on your hard drive. If the hard drive isn't there, how can iTunes play it?
You'll have to move/copy the music from your hard drive to your computer's hard drive.
Basically, EASIEST way to do all this, if you don't care about your play counts, etc...
-Delete EVERYTHING from iTunes, so that your library is now empty.
-Go to "Advanced" inside of the "Preferences" window, found in the "Edit" drop-down. You can also access Preferences by pressing Ctrl+, (Press Ctrl and the comma key)
-Change your iTunes Media Folder Location to something simple, but on your computer. I use C:/iTunes. Make sure "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and "Copy files to...." are both checked. You can close Preferences now.
-Now, drag and drop your music from your hard drive into your iTunes library. iTunes will automatically add the music to your library, as you would expect, and also creates a copy of each file to place into that iTunes Media Folder you just created.
Shouldn't have any more problems...

When tracks in iTunes display a it means the file cannot be located; it may have been moved or deleted. You'll have to locate the file manually if it is still available. For more information refer to the following article:

First, I would try the following suggested steps for when you don't see content in iTunes after updating:
Quit iTunes.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes.
Use the Finder (Mac) or Windows Explorer (Windows) to go to the iTunes folder that contains the iTunes library files:
Mac OS X
/Users/username/Music/iTunes/
Microsoft Windows Windows XP and Windows 2000
\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
Microsoft Windows Windows Vista and Windows 7
\Users\username\Music\iTunes\
Drag the iTunes Library file from the above location to the Desktop.
Open the Previous iTunes Libraries folder in the iTunes folder.
Locate the file named iTunes Library YYYY-MM-DD where YYYY-MM-DD is the date you upgraded iTunes (Year-Month-Day).
Drag this file to the iTunes folder (the enclosing folder).
Rename this file to iTunes Library.
Open iTunes.
You should now see your missing content in iTunes.
