Photo counts in Library Tab of Inspector Pane

I run Aperture 3.1 on a home and work computer. Home runs Snow Leopard. Work runs Leopard. On my home computer there is a photo count shown along the right edge of the library tab across from each Project name. On the work computer, there is none. I have searched every command, menu, FAQ, forum, and friend for an answer and have come up blank. Is this just the difference in OS 10.5 vs. OS 10.6? Does anyone have an idea?

see Appearance tab in Preference,
There is checkbox show version count in projects and albums.

  • Any way to re-arrange items in Library tab in Inspector?

The sections in the Library tab in the Inspector are ordered
    LIBRARY
    RECENT
    PROJECTS
    ALBUMS
Is there any way to change this? I'd prefer ALBUMS to be between RECENT and PROJECTS.
    The sections can't be dragged.

Agree 100% about the new design.  Is this a carry-over from iOS (designed for much smaller screens)?
    leonieDF wrote:
Kirby, I am not yet sure, if I really like these new sections. Up to now I had related items in one folder, when working with new image - the folder contained: The projects,  the book I am creating, the webpages, the slideshow, the screensaver, the smart albums with the searches. Very easy to drag and drop from one item to another. Now there are long distances between related items and sections to open to reveal them. Maybe this is a question of my workflow, but for me it is not relevant to have easy access to other books when I am working at a book, I need easy access to the containers of the images that I want to add to the book.
I'm still thinking this through.  My work has never lent itself to a direct corespondance between Projects (shoots) and projects (things I make).  (Do you have multiple "screensaver" albums -- one in each Folder containing "the projects,  the book I am creating, the webpages, the slideshow, the screensaver, the smart albums"?)
Conceptually, it makes sense to me:  I have always advocating creating separate storage (the mis-named "Projects") and access/retrieval/output (Albums in their many glories) structures.  In all my "real" Libraries, prior to 3.3, I kept a top-level Folder for Projects (that stored my photos by shoot) and a top-level Folder for Folders of Albums (that held my output projects {small p projects}, such as "Sony World Photography 2012 Submission" and "My Pittsburgh -- sketching with a camera").  I also kept another top-level Folder for global Smart Albums.  The (forced) addition of grouping-by-container-type in 3.3 parallels the separation I'd already been doing.  I'm not sure it's a good match, however.  (As you know, I had a very hard time getting one big Library through the 3.3 needle, and am just now adjusting its set-up to the changes in the GUI-scape.)
    Functionally, it is clumsy.
Preliminarily, I like the idea but not the execution.  We see lots of indications here in our little clearing in the orchard that Aperture _very much_ needs a better container Browser -- the Library tab of the Inspector is not up to the task.  I see this as a great challenge -- and opportunity -- for Aperture 4's designers.
My first piece of advice would be to not talk with the designers of Apple's file browser.
    What would you do?
I'd investigate making Projects View fully functional (note that we can at least edit Project names in place now, with 3.3), and look into expanding it to a kind of all-containers view, moving past the limited and fixed "one tree" structure present on the Library tab of the Inspector.

  • Where is the photo count in the Library Filter of Lightroom?

    Look at this screenshot.
This is from an online tutorial and is a typical view of the Library Filter. Notice that there are photo counts to the right of each of the search criteria. For example, All (2 Cameras) - 487 photos. Canon EOS 5D - 404 photos, etc.
Now notice a screen shot from my iMac with Lightroom 5.2 on OX 10.9 Mavericks.
Notice that there are no photo counts after the search criteria. WHERE DID THEY GO? Or for that matter, were they ever there in this iteration of LR? I think they were but I'm not sure. Incidentally, I am aware the count will appear in the filmstrip (see the next photo) but that is not nearly as useful.
If anyone can help me get this to work as I suppose it should, please let me know.
    Thanks a bunch,
    Craig

    Thanks Rich.
Would be helpful to all if Adobe would acknowledge such known bugs on their 10.9 Mavericks compatibility page.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/mac-os-mavericks-compatability.html
The white sliders are mentioned but not the missing photo count (which was obviously reported in the beta phase). I'm sure there are more.

  • Strange ... Projects opened from Projects View are no longer (3.3) selected on the Library tab of the Inspector.

Strange goings on here with my Libraries: Projects opened from Projects View are no longer (3.3) selected on the Library tab of the Inspector.  When, in Projects View, I double-click a Project, that Project's contents are shown in the Browser, but the selection shown on the Library tab of the Inspector remains on "Projects" near the top of the tab.
This is, imho, _very very very bad_.  Can someone confirm this behavior on their machine?  Is this announced or expected?
    Thanks.

    Hi Kirby,
    I never noticed!
Can someone confirm this behavior on their machine?
    Confirmed! (on MBP und iMac)
    Is this announced or expected?
Don't know - it does not follow from the release notes, as far as I understand them.

I believe you will find you can again sync Photos if you delete the "iPod Photo Cache", but predict that any subsequent attempt will fail.  In my case, the enxt sync removes all the photos again - I've seen other reports of error messages upon sync.  Mine just fails silently. :-)

  • How do i allocate more memory to my iphoto application? i am unable to add more photos to my library  i keep getting a pop up saying not enough memory in my application

how do i allocate more memory from my hd to my iphoto application? i have over 80 gb on my hard drive, but only 1.7 gb allocated to my iphoto application & i am unable to add more photos to my library.  i keep getting a popup that says not enough application memory.

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks.") The procedure may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, remove the software. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the  leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • Book no longer visible in Projects tab of Inspector - How do I get it back?

Something happened in a Time Machine backup and although the project I was working on is still visible in the "project tab" of Inspector, the book I designed and printed two days ago is no longer visible. I also had a folder with the photos I was using for the book and it's icon is also gone.
After searching in finder, using the right click and "show package contents," the book is still in the Aperture Library.... it just doesn't show up in the PROJECT TAB of Inspector.
Any suggestions on how to get it to be visible once again? Thanks for any help.

    Hi Petria,
Firefox is a web browser. It displays the content of existing sites. Things like email or page contents come from the content provider. Who is the calendar provider? It sounds like this might even be a desktop application and not a web based calendar? You'll probably have better luck consulting their help documentation.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • N8 start photo count @3000

    Hi
I am new to this forum and I was wondering if there is a way to reset the the photo count to start at 3,000.
For example photo 000001.jpg would be 0003001.jpg and count up from there.
Or maybe an app that might do this.
    Thanks!

    Gerlof:
Since iPhoto has lost track of roughly 2000 photos you may have to create a new library and import the Originals folder from the old library. But first try using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild it library. It copies the necessary files and data from the old library and does not modify the old library. Here's how:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: It can take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.
    Good luck.
    Do you Twango?
P.S. if you have to start over and reimport the Originals folders check out Tutorial #1 as a way to keep the keywords of the files that iPhoto can see.

  • Delete photo from iPhoto library and HDD

Hopefully I'm not repeating a previous thread...
Not being an expert, am I correct in saying that iPhoto only changes its version of the photo when editing it?
Also, if you delete the photo by moving it to the trash can, it doesn't physically delete it from the HDD? (When you empty the trash can)
This causes a problem for a few reasons.
I have just loaded Medialink PS3 which allows the iMac to serve the PS3. (BTW - Good product)
If you point Medialink to the original HDD folder then this still includes photos I thought I had deleted.
Also If I want to burn a cd with the photo folder external to iPhoto , the "deleted" photos are also burnt.
I copied all of the photos from a windows PC, and Picasa allowed you to physically delet from its own folder as well as the HDD.
    Doesn't iPhoto 09 allow this?
What would iPhoto do if I went through and cleaned up the external folder and deleted jpgs or edited using Canon editing software? If using the external editor, would iPhoto reflect the changes?
    Sorry if this is verbose.
    regards,

You might want to have a llook at the iPhoto tutorials. They cover a lot of these basics.
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#iphoto-hero
And the version of iPhoto you are using?
I'm not at all sure that a Referenced Library is what you want. In fact I strongly recommend against it. But however:
    *How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
    *What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
    *Some things to consider:*
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
    My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    +Some Other Comments+
iPhoto will not touch any file outside its library. Period.
It will copy files on import and leave existing files untouched,
It will delete files within the Library but not outside the Library.
When you choose to go with a Referenced Library you are deciding that You want to manage the Files. You want to import them from the camera, you want to sort them however you want and you want to delete them yourself. That's the point of a referenced Library.
I just did a test by editing a photo using Canon Professional and the changes were not reflected in iPhoto. And vise versa.
The point of iPhoto is that you interface with your Photos via the Application. Like Addressbook for your contacts, iTunes for your Music, it's the go-to app for your Photos.
So, you want to edit Photos, you go to iPhoto and use the External Editor:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
    Regards

How do you know the library was modified with iPhoto 9 (11)?  If you've never had iPhoto 9 on your Mac it could'nt have.  It sounds like a damaged library. Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Lightroom Photo Count

    Hello,
I've just begun importing photos into LR. I'm doing it by folder. I'm not certain how this happened, but at this point LR is telling me that I have 2244 photos in my library. But when I take the option to display all photos, it tells me it is displaying 2240 of 2244 and it shows me 2240.
I've gone back to each folder and checked for missing photos and folders and come up with nothing. I don't recall having an abend during an update...but I'm still a new with this SW, so maybe I missed something. Is there an option to validate my library, or the database, or reconnect missing files... to see if that's my problem?
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Claudia

Concerning these numbers. For the past few days I have been working at completely reorganising my folder structure so that now I have one master folder with multiple sub folders some of which are divided further still. Then I cleaned out all the dng files from the folders that had both dng and the original raw files. Following this I deleted the current database (after saving a copy for emergencies) which had the result of clearing out all used keywords. I then deleted all unused keywords. The result was a clean start with LR.
I then did an 'Import' and selected only the "Master" folder which brought in 'X' number of images. What was strange was that although LR brought in ALL the images (shown as All Photographs) it then showed X minus Y under the 'Last Import' dialogue which in fact was 4 less then the total 'Import' of 'X'.
I physically counted all the images in their respective folders and this tallied with that shown under 'All Photographs' in LR.
I still haven't found a reason why the 'Last Import' figure was showing 4 images less when I have only done one (1) Import. I found that shutting down LR and then restarting it cleared the problem but the fact that this problem showed in the first place illustrates that there must be some sort of problem with LR's counting mechanism. As this was almost a fresh install because a New db was created there were obviously no flags/filters etc set. Um!!

  • Photo count incorrect

Guys I'm having an issue with the photo count on my iOS devices. I'm using photo stream (NO iCloud Photo Library (Beta)!!) on my iPhone 5 and iPad mini retina.
I wanted to clear space after importing the photos to my mac. The photos are now gone from my device (as in camera role on the iPhone & Photo Stream).
But both iPhone and iPad show more than 500 photos in the photos count under General-About. The issue is that under iTunes it is also showing (as on the device) that it is taking up that physical space (several GB). There are no photos in the recently deleted part.
I have to say that I do NOT want to reset the device (reason: corporate apps [good for enterprise] - big issue setting with company). Strangely enough iCloud Photos web shows a Album I can't delete but it is empty.
Does anybody know how to correct this? Please?

    Hi rstark18,
What does the iPhone say? Tap Settings> General> About.
Did you start to sync photos and disconnect the iPhone during the sync?
Make sure iTunes and the iPhone are both updated.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/
If the iPhone continues to show the incorrect information, you can restore it. This article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305744 will walk you through restoring the iPhone.

  • Weird Photo Count...

I just downloaded a compact flash card into my computer and edited some of the images. When I attempted to burn the photos to a DVD by clicking the key photo and using the Share ===>Burn command I got a Disk Is Full message along with a new photo count of 454. I assume that this increase in images is due to duplicates made in the process of doing the rough edits? In an attempt to reduce the number of photos to fit available space on the DVD I next clicked on images near the end of the roll while holding down the command key. While the images were deselected as I did this the photo count remained at 454 and the Disk Is Full error message remained unchanged. Next I deselected all the images and began hand selecting images using the shift key. When I had reached the end of the roll with all images selected there was still plenty of disk space remaining on the DVD. Clearly there is something going on behind the scenes here of which I am unaware. Anybody know what it is?
    Thanks,
    Win

When you use the Share->Burn menu option you are burning a mini library to the disc. That mini library will be larger than just the size of the photos alone as it will include the original, thumbnail, modified versions along with the various database files in the library. This screenshot is of one of those libraries burned with an older version of iPhoto.
If you want burn just the edited version of the photos select them and use the File->Export->File Export menu option. Select format = JPEG, Quality high or max, size=full and export to a folder on the Desktop. Then burn that folder to the disc. You can check the size of that folder before burning to disc in the Finder.
