Photo Downloader Freezes Up

Hi to all Bridge Macintosh users,
I've posted this same thing to the Adobe:Camera Raw forum, but it is probably more relevant to Bridge Macintosh forum users. That is the photo downloader freeze-up problem when you click "choose" to select a folder. It happens if you install the latest Camera Raw plug-in. You can take Adobe's advice and do an elaborate work-around that involves putting all your photos into a pre-selected folder and simply not using the "choose" button (I find that ridiculous, personally, but if you have a camera that is only supported by the newest version of ACR, you have no other choice), or you can use Time Machine to go back and find your copy of ACR 4.6.1. Once restored to its place in the Root directory:Library:Application Support:Adobe:Plug-ins folder, Photo Downloader will be restored to normal functionality. Don't bother deleting "plist" files as suggested by some forum participants. That simply doesn't work. Hopefully Adobe will have a fix soon for users with the new cameras covered by ACR 6.5. Thank you.

Somehow, I hadn't caught this:

Gary,
Oh, that is soooooo wrong!
One should ALWAYS run the LATEST release of ACR, no exceptions.  Each new release brings unheralded, unannounced and sometimes even unacknowledged bug fixes and improvements, beyond support for newer cameras.
Staying with an older version just because your camera is already supported by it is a very <euphemism>unwise</euphemism> decision.

Adobe BRIDGE CS 5 PHOTO DOWNLOADER freezes and/or stops working during download after 2 years of use. I have uninstalled/re installed twice, cleaned system, adjusted Bridge settings with no change. And I have found no helpful troublshooting tips in forum or on web.

Does it freeze with other type of cards.  Have seem some post that suggest an imbedded CODEC on the flash card can cause file corruption in Bridge and Mac Finder.
To access the crash log it is officially called the event log.  To access us OS Help.

  • Bridge CS6 photo downloader freezes and will not allow import.

    Hello,
I'm running Windows 8 and CS6.  Whenever I try and import images from an photo card, Photo Downloader freezes.  Only way to get out of dialogue box is to X out.   I cannot import or set up default folders, file names, etc..  This never happened to me on earlier versions of Bridge.  Any ideas?  Happy to provide more specifics if helpful or relevant.

Do you have another reader?  USB dedicated to specific size is most reliable.
If not you can try from camera, although this is the most error prone.
Also, it is recommended by many that you do not delete and format card in computer, but this should be done in camera each time.

  • Bridge CS6 Photo downloader freezes on .mov files

Bridge CS 6 photo downloader freezes on .mov files from a T4i.  To get the video files I've had to use Bridge CS5 photo downloader.
I have PS CS5, PrPro & AE CS6 if this makes a difference.  Photos are no problem downloading.
    Any ideas?  Thanks.

I shoot both.  I use Bridge & ACR CS6 to view and edit Raw files.  CS5 doesn't recognise the Raw files (had to convert to dng before I got Bridge CS6).   CS6 will download both Raw & Jpeg files.  It hangs up on the .mov files.
I use a card reader on my Epson printer.  I've cleared the cache in Bridge. How do I resfresh the prefs in Bridge?

  • Photo Downloader freezes when loading device list

I'm using Bridge 2.1.1.9 on a Mac running 10.5.4. Recently, when I connect a Nikon camera to transfer photos, the Adobe Photo Downloader freezes after displaying a "Loading device list" message. I have to Force Quit the Photo Downloader to get out of this situation. I tried unchecking the Bridge Preference for "When a Camera is connected, launch Adobe Photo Downloader", and manually choosing File > Get Photos from Camera, but Photo Downloader still freezes.
This process used to work perfectly. I don't know what has changed to cause it to break. When the camera is connected to the Mac, the Mac does recognize the camera and presents its disk image on the Desktop.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

    Andrew:
    >Here's hoping Apple and/or Adobe fixes this issue someday soon, though
It is not an Apple or Adobe issue, it can happen with every platform in every application. It is more an issue that the camera picks up something that it should not or it hesitates due to power malfunction or you name it ...
There are a lot of types in camera's and even each brand has a different software version for a newer type. The card reader route is safer and also faster as Andy already pointed out.
Also after backing up raw files and converting to DNG check if the previews are working good in Bridge and after that you should format the CF card each time in the camera itself instead of deleting all or format in the computer.
And changing your workflow is also a good thing to try, every upgrade for an application has newer functions that require a new approach. I can assure you that a new approach for an old habit can be very productive :-)

  • Photo Downloader freezes randomly during download

    Hi all,
I've used Bridge without trouble since CS5 was first released, but this week, it froze during a routine download of about 30 Gb from my Canon 7D.  [I do lots of time-lapse photography.]  When I retried the operation, it failed again, but at a different file.  I launched Task Manager and noted almost no CPU usage, either from PhotoDownloader or any other programs.  I retried again, downloading just one day at a time.  That worked fine (though not fun selecting the files and prone to human error).  Then, I connected my GoPro Hero 4 - also no history of probems - and after a few files downloaded successfully, it failed too, but this time with an error message about failing to communicate with the device.  And this time, I also noticed that all of my external hard disks spun up just prior to failure.  [This might've happened during the prior failures too but I didn't notice.]  Again, I downloaded in batches, day-by-day, and it worked fine.
As such, it appears that Photo Downloader is freezing or failing randomly - the fewer files I download at once, the less likely I am to have a problem.  I have a hunch that another program might be accessing all of the disks on my system and, consequently, temporarily blocking communications between Photo Downloader and the USB-attached camera, but haven't seen any processes spike in Task Manager.  [It may be a hidden Windows thing.]  I wonder if there's a time-out value in Bridge I can increase?
I'm using Adobe Bridge CS5 (4.0.5.11) on Windows.
    Any ideas?

    Bad idea.
This excerpt is from a long-gone post by author Bruce Fraser:
Bruce Fraser - 4:17pm Jun 14, 04 PST (#5 of 21) Opening files directly from the camera is a bad idea for a variety of reasons*, and it most certainly isn't faster than using a FireWire or USB2 card reader.         •
            • Drains the camera battery
            • Runs the risk of the software you're using to open the images writing to the card and destroying the format
            • Runs a small but significant risk of USB power frying the camera
            • Slowest method known to mankind of getting images off a CF or SD card

  • Photo Downloader freezes while Devicelist is loading

    Hi there,
on my iMac (OSX 10.5.8) the Photo Downloader works well when the system is "freshly started". At any uncertain point in time, when I launch Bridge and the Photo Downloader, the window "Device list is loading" (actually "Geräteliste wird geladen") is shown and ... nothing happens anymore. When I kill Downloader an restart the wohle system, next time Downloader works well. Until the problem reoccurs after quiting and relaunching Bridge/Downloader.
    Any idea?

When I kill Downloader an restart the wohle system, next time Downloader works well. Until the problem reoccurs after quiting and relaunching Bridge/Downloader.
You could try to quit Bridge and Photodownloader and then from the user library  Preferences folder find and manual delete the plist file for Photodownloader (com.adobe.photodownloader.plist) This will be recreated with a default one after having started Bridge and Photodownloader. So you will have to choose your own customized settings once to get t back to what you like.
If the problem persist also check your system maintenance. Have you already tried to check and repair your permissions? Use Apple Disk Utility for this (in the utilities folder in Applications)

  • PSE9 Photo Downloader freezes

I have PSE9 that I run on an I-mac quad core with 8mg of ram. Anytime I load a media card and try to use photo downloader the program frezzes when I try to change the location that I want to save the photo to. I've read a few forum threads that suggest download Camera Raw 6.6 update. I have done this but when I use Adobe Patch installer a window pops up saying " Update is not applicable" This seems to be a know issues that dates back for alest 6 months. Does anyone know if Adobe has solved this issue?

Okay, the simple way is to go here and download the update:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=40&platform=Macintosh
Then double click the DMG file to mount it. Double click Payloads, then double click this dmg file:
Double click Universal, and then you'll see the camera raw plugin.
Now go to your hard drive>library>application support>adobe>Plugins>Elements 9>File Formats and remove the existing camera raw plug in from there and replace it with the new one.

  • IPhoto download freezes after 7,224 photos?

I'm trying to download about 25,000 iPhotos to a folder on my iMac external drive using Snow Leopard.
But having tried three times now, each time the download freezes around 7,224 photos with an error message saying the volume won't connect (or something).
WHY is this happening? Any clues? I read it's best to download the photos from the one machine (iMac) and then upload them from the other machine (Mac Pro). I thought I'd accomplish this using the external drive.
    Thanks for any clues...
    :0)

The same is happening to me. After downloading all but 123 of 1,600+ photos from my wife's iPhone to my MacBook Pro, a file error bombs out the whole download. Files actually show up in All Movies and All Image in the Finder, then they disappear after the error message pops.
I can understand if the corrupt file doesn't download, but why would Apple want to create all of this frustration by having one file (or a few files) kill the whole job. Just isolate the corrupt files and work around them.
If anyone has an automated solution to this other than manual one-by-one downloading, please advise.
    Thank you.

  • Photo Downloader APD hangs freezes in Photoshop Elements 9 when camera or iphone 4S selected

I can't get any new images downloaded off my devices.  I usually do this with Photo Downloader in the Photoshop Elements 9 Organiser ... I go into Get Photos > from camera or card reader, then select the relevant device (iphone 4S or Canon 40D).  As expected it asks to select a device, whcih I do, but then it gets stuck on "connecting to devlce, please wait".  I first noticed this problem with my iphone 4S but have since not been able to download from camera either.
I am running Windows 7 with Photoshop Elements 9, using iphone 4S with latest version of software and latest itunes.
    I have tried:
I have updated the software from within elements (detected camera raw 6.5 needs updating; done) and the problem persists.
I have optimised/ repaired the catalog
There seem to be threads relating to hanging when you try to change the location in downloader.  That is not my problem.  Camera raw 6.5 seemed to cause the problem in that case.  Today I have just updated my elements software (it detected camera raw 6.5 required installation so I suppose I must have been running the previous version of camera raw).  Hence camera raw 6.5 not the problem in this case?  If it's relevant, a hard drive search detects camera raw.8bi 16 Sept 2011 19012kb in c:\programfiles\commonfiles\adobe\plugins\elements9 as well as camera raw.8BI with 8 Sept 2010 10179kb in c:\program files\adobe\adobe premiere elements 9\apd\photo downloader\plugins
This happened around the time I upgraded the iphone 4S software (friday 24 August 2012) to the latest version.
    Thanks for reading
    Kimberley

To check that the update installed correctly go to the Editor menu and click:
    Help >> About Plug-in >> Camera Raw
You should see a pop up with the version number.
    Press Esc to close.

  • Photo Downloader doesn't retain previous settings (again)

Please see previous post because this issue involves Photo Downloader and ACR.
    I'm using 10.6.8, CS5.1 and Bridge 4.1.0.54
I have just reloaded Camera Raw 6.4.1 due to the bug in ACR 6.5 that prevents selecting a destination folder in Photo Downloader and causing  Bridge to freeze.
6.4.1 solves the freeze problem, but now it's back to the problem that none of the settings in Advanced Dialog are retained, nor does Photo Downloader default to Advanced Dialog anymore.  I've added the CS5 folder as before (User/Library/Application Support/Adobe) alongside the existing CS5.1 folder, but it hasn't solved the problem.  Is there a new solution to this yet?
6.4.1 works fine on my MBP using the above workaround (CS5 folder added).  Because I now have a dozen new student iMacs to set up, my three-part second question is: has ACR 6.6 been tested for these two bugs; should I wait before setting up the iMacs; how long before ACR 6.6 is officially released?

Thanks Omke.  I¹ll try that next time I¹m in the lab.  However, on my
MacBook Pro I checked the CS5.1 folder, and there is no ³APDPreferences.xml²
in that location (it is there in CS5 folder but I couldn¹t open it).  On the
iMacs, I¹m only running CS5.1.  Is there a different location for it in
    CS5.1?
I¹m wondering if I¹m the only one running Mac OS 10.6.8, Bridge 4.1.0.54 and
ACR 6.5 who¹s having this problem?

      It¹s baffling,
That is to put it mildly you mean, can't imagine that is the only word that
came to your mind...   Have you tried to repair permissions for OSX
again? I don't have the 5.5 installed so can't compare but if one system
does work, another not and you have compared both files and folders
existence in the two systems  it does seem to be OS related to me? There is
    also a file called "APDPreferences.xml" (user/library/Application Support/
Adobe/Bridge CS5) Can you open the files on both systems and compare the
content, it contains the settings made in advanced dialog.

  • Bridge CS4 & photo downloader 64 bit

Since updating to CS4, I can no longer use the Adobe photo downloader,  The pop up screen says "Loading devices list" and freezes that way forever. What can I do to make this work again?

Seems like I have seen posts where the autoload does not work correctly when you plug in a usb device  with 64 bit systems.  This is Windows Os thing.  Might google this to check for solutions.

  • Photos app freezes when I try to use share-message

This has been going on with iPhoto since one of its updates about 6 months ago.  And now with the new Photos app on my MacBook Pro same thing: when I try to share a photo by sending an iMessage the app freezes.  I can maybe get a recipient name entered in, but the little pop up box is totally grayed out and it freezes and the whole Photos app freezes.  I have to quit then app in order to get out of the mess.  Can anyone offer some help?  Thanks.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD

  • Adobe Bridge Photo Downloader Results without using Photo Downloader

I always used the Photo Downloader to download files, rename them and organize them into folders named by date.
I recently upgraded to a Network Attached Storage device that has a USB Port directly on the front of it and allows me to dump all my camera files straight onto the external hard drive. However, it does not rename them - so it uses the raw file names that the camera assigns them and doesn't organize them in any way.
This is really handy for me as I don't have to copy 16gb of photos across a wireless network when I want to clear out a memory card. However, I haven't found a way to organize the files after the fact.
Is there any way to have Adobe Bridge (or any other Mac software!) go through those files and move/rename them the same way that Photo Downloader always did directly from the camera? How?
    Thanks!

If you are sure your files have the metadata, in other words you can place your memory card into a reader and the information is there,
next step, is a total Bridge Preferences reset
Start Adobe Bridge and immediately press Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS) until the Reset Settings dialog box appears. Select all three options--Reset Preferences, Reset Standard Workspaces, and Purge Entire Thumbnail Cache--and then click OK.
