Photo downloader puts everything in One Directory

A problem I have been unable to solve - help!
My daughter has a Nikon P50. I load her photos onto my HomeServer whenever required just like I do with my Nikon D40, however there is one difference I cannot resolve.
When I use Photo downloader with my D40 (and also my previous camera) it very usefully creates a folder for each date and puts the photos taken on that date in there. This is a setting in the downloader option and it has always worked perfectly....... until I used it with the P50. Everyhing is set up identically except downloader stores all the photos, no matter when they were taken, in a single directory with todays date - how annoying!
I have contacted Nikon as I thought there must be a fault with the camera but they have thoroughly checked it out. Every picture is storing the correct information.
What could possibly cause this too happen.
A toughy people - can you help me!
Thanks
Mark

Hi
Thanks for replying......yes this is weird!
The metadata contains 3 dates:
Date Time - this appears to be the 'upload' time
Date Time Original - this is the date the photo was taken and is correct
Date Time Digitizes - this is the again the date teh photo was taken and is correct
This is the same as my Nikon D40 which uploads perfectly. Very weird!
Any thoughts about why would be appreciated!
Thanks again
Mark

Sorting Bookmarks in the Library window (Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks) is for temporary display. The Bookmarks are not permanently sorted.
To permanently sort, open the Bookmarks Sidebar (Ctrl+B opens or closes the Bookmarks Sidebar ---- Cmd+B in OSX), right-click (Cmd+click in OSX) the "Bookmarks Menu" folder and choose "Sort by Name".

  • Aperture = iPhoto + Bridge Photo Downloader + Photoshop?

I am considering to use Aperture to streamline my workflow but I wonder about its file management capability. Let me explain the details:
I love iPhoto to browse, find and preview photos. It provides the most intuitive, easy and fast way for that. The interface is also nice. The photo-editing capability is negligible for me as I use Photoshop for this.
But I really hate the way it manages imported photos as Rolls and keep everything hidden under the 'Package'. So instead, I use Adobe's Bridge Photo Downloader from Photoshop to download photos from my cameras/iPhone and I set it to organize the files into folders: year/year-month/date-time of the photos taken. Then I'd import them to iPhoto - but without copying the originals. So basically I create a Reference Library for my iPhoto. I then tag/assigning Keywords the photos accordingly (I have plenty of keywords assigned). I sometimes create Events or Albums too - especially great for showing photos on my computer to friends and family.
Photoshop is set as the external app to edit photos so from iPhoto I can open the file in Photoshop (which I have been using for all my photo editing needs including RAW).
From what I gathered so far, Aperture seems to be a more efficient alternative to process RAW photos, and I've been wanting to find an alternative to the iPhoto-Bridge-Photoshop method above. Basically I need a Photo App that can do all the following:
    1. Import original photos from cameras/iPhone and then automatically organize them chronologically (in folders of year/year-month/date-time of the photo taken) a la Bridge's Photo Downloader
    2. Tag/Keywords, create Events and Albums, and to Preview photos quickly a la iPhoto
    3. Edit RAW files without harming the original files a la Photoshop
I wonder whether Aperture is suitable for the usage I described above?
Thanks in advance for any inputs!

    Hi freefire,
So Aperture can import photosfrom cameras/iPhone and automatically organize, rename and save them into folders outside of Aperture Library?
You can rename files on each import. However, saving files is not Aperture's job. If you put the files wherever you want, and then import them into Aperture as referenced images, they stay where they are.
Alternately, and this would be much more tedious, you could import them all into Aperture as managed photos, and then use Aperture to "relocate masters" to somewhere else. That's sort of like two steps where one (my first paragraph) would suffice.
If you want to organize photos by year, that is the job of Aperture. However, that is the job of Aperture *within the confines of Aperture*. Aperture is built primary to help you organize your photos within its database. You can make smart albums to show you every photo from 2010, for instance. That smart album is meaningless in Finder because it is not a primary function of Aperture to help you organize outside of Aperture. Basically, if you want to use Aperture to make directory structures for Finder, you aren't using Aperture in the most effective way.
When I edit a RAW file in Photoshop, Photoshop keeps the new setting within the RAW file itself without creating new file and I can go back and make further changes or revert back to original state - all in the file itself.
Are you sure about that? I thought Photoshop used the sidecar XMP files for that sort of thing. I'm no expert, but there's generally no provision in the file formats (including RAW files) for "this is how you undo something." I don't use Photoshop like that, but it sounds fishy that Photoshop will choose to write new data to a RAW file, as RAW files are proprietary and will never be produced by anything but a camera. It sounds doubly fishy that it will also write *undo data* to a RAW file. Again, I'm no expert at Photoshop, but I am an expert at software engineering, and it sounds pretty strange and error-prone.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3359633
Now, when I do that with Aperture, will Aperture then make a new copy of the RAW file to be kept in Aperture Library?
Aperture will not make a new copy of a master (RAW or not) unless you explicitly duplicate it (and that is not what you are asking about). Aperture, being a Digital Asset Manager, will never modify your masters. (Except if you change the date/time and choose to modify the master.) This is unlike photo editors like Photoshop, which may manipulate their input files and save those changes to the same files. Aperture makes a version, which is a recipe for changing the appearance of your master.

  • Photo Downloader Freezes Up

Hi to all Bridge Macintosh users,
I've posted this same thing to the Adobe:Camera Raw forum, but it is probably more relevant to Bridge Macintosh forum users. That is the photo downloader freeze-up problem when you click "choose" to select a folder. It happens if you install the latest Camera Raw plug-in. You can take Adobe's advice and do an elaborate work-around that involves putting all your photos into a pre-selected folder and simply not using the "choose" button (I find that ridiculous, personally, but if you have a camera that is only supported by the newest version of ACR, you have no other choice), or you can use Time Machine to go back and find your copy of ACR 4.6.1. Once restored to its place in the Root directory:Library:Application Support:Adobe:Plug-ins folder, Photo Downloader will be restored to normal functionality. Don't bother deleting "plist" files as suggested by some forum participants. That simply doesn't work. Hopefully Adobe will have a fix soon for users with the new cameras covered by ACR 6.5. Thank you.

    Somehow, I hadn't caught this:
    Gary Niemeier wrote:
…Personally, I didn't grab this release candidate, as my aging Nikon D90 is well-covered by ACR 4.6.1. But for anyone who has a newer camera or lenses, Adobe now has you covered.
    Gary,
    Oh, that is soooooo wrong!
One should ALWAYS run the LATEST release of ACR, no exceptions.  Each new release brings unheralded, unannounced and sometimes even unacknowledged bug fixes and improvements, beyond support for newer cameras.
Staying with an older version just because your camera is already supported by it is a very <euphemism>unwise</euphemism> decision.

  • Can i transfer everything from one ipad to another so both have exactly the same things

Can i transfer everything from one ipad to another so both have exactly the same things?

Yes. Copy your apps and other iTunes purchases/downloads to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases if you have iTunes 11 on your computer), then backup up the first iPad and restore that backup onto the second iPad.
    Backups and restores : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4079
Things that aren't included in a backup include the contents of the Music and Videos apps (but they should be on your computer's iTunes) and photos that were synced from a computer. Also you will need to enter your passwords (email, wifi, website) on the second iPad - they won't be restored onto a different device, only back onto the device that the backup came from.

  • Adobe Bridge CS3 photo downloader won't auto-open.

    Hi,
    This is my mystery:
I can open Bridge/File/Get Photos From Camera/, and select my cf card drive. But the Photo Downloader box USED to pop up when I first put my card in the reader. This does not happen any more - and I can't figure out why, or how to reset it.
    Any ideas?
    Bridge 2.1.1.9
    Windows XP Pro 64-bit
    Thanks,
    Karl G

This may add Bridge to your list of "Open XXX with" programs.
    1) Using Windows Explorer, browse to any of the photographs on your system - not necessarily on your camera card. It's helpful if all of your photographs are JPGs or TIFs, but not necessary.
    2) Right-click one of the photo files and select "Properties".
    3) Near the top of that dialog is "Open with <program name>", and there should be a "Change..." button to the right of that. Click the Change button.
    4) On the "Open With" dialog, click the "Browse..." button and browse to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Bridge CS3\Bridge.exe and click OK.
    5) Now, still on the "Open With" dialog, make sure the "Always use the selected program..." check-box is turned OFF. (If you can't turn it off, that shouldn't be a problem.
    6) Click OK and then close your Windows Explorer.
At this point, you should be able to complete step 6) from my previous post. (Of course you'll have to follow all of those steps from my previous post.)

  • Photo Downloader doesn't retain previous settings (again)

Please see previous post because this issue involves Photo Downloader and ACR.
    I'm using 10.6.8, CS5.1 and Bridge 4.1.0.54
I have just reloaded Camera Raw 6.4.1 due to the bug in ACR 6.5 that prevents selecting a destination folder in Photo Downloader and causing  Bridge to freeze.
6.4.1 solves the freeze problem, but now it's back to the problem that none of the settings in Advanced Dialog are retained, nor does Photo Downloader default to Advanced Dialog anymore.  I've added the CS5 folder as before (User/Library/Application Support/Adobe) alongside the existing CS5.1 folder, but it hasn't solved the problem.  Is there a new solution to this yet?
6.4.1 works fine on my MBP using the above workaround (CS5 folder added).  Because I now have a dozen new student iMacs to set up, my three-part second question is: has ACR 6.6 been tested for these two bugs; should I wait before setting up the iMacs; how long before ACR 6.6 is officially released?

Thanks Omke.  I¹ll try that next time I¹m in the lab.  However, on my
MacBook Pro I checked the CS5.1 folder, and there is no ³APDPreferences.xml²
in that location (it is there in CS5 folder but I couldn¹t open it).  On the
iMacs, I¹m only running CS5.1.  Is there a different location for it in
    CS5.1?
I¹m wondering if I¹m the only one running Mac OS 10.6.8, Bridge 4.1.0.54 and
ACR 6.5 who¹s having this problem?

      It¹s baffling,
That is to put it mildly you mean, can't imagine that is the only word that
came to your mind...   Have you tried to repair permissions for OSX
again? I don't have the 5.5 installed so can't compare but if one system
does work, another not and you have compared both files and folders
existence in the two systems  it does seem to be OS related to me? There is
    also a file called "APDPreferences.xml" (user/library/Application Support/
Adobe/Bridge CS5) Can you open the files on both systems and compare the
content, it contains the settings made in advanced dialog.

  • Photo Downloader - delete files from camera results in device is not connected or busy

    Hi,
My user use Adobe Bridge CS6 since a few weeks. They also made a transition from Windows XP to Windows 7 (32 bit). All my users have the issue in Photo Downloader. They can download the pictures into their network folders, and when the import is completed Photo Downloader asks if the user wants to delete those pictures from the device or card reader. When the user clicks on Yes, it results in the (some what) following error: Device is not attached/connected or busy. Since we use the Dutch language it is a free translation ;-). Now my first thought was that maybe Windows sees the device as a Read Only device and that is why he can't delete those pictures. If so, I have to search for the solution in our policy's and USB/device management. But I am not familiar with Adobe Bridge.
    Thanks!

    EJEskes wrote:

Sorry to be the messenger with bad news.
This is the boilerplate text often used in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406793.html
Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.   It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

  • Bridge CS4 Photo Downloader Date Created

Quick question. When using the Adobe Bridge CS4 Photo Downloader to download pictures from a camera, how do I keep the original shot dates (date created) to show up in the Finder Info. Seems like it's just putting the date modified (downloaded date and time) into the date created.
    Is this a known bug?

    Thanks, John.
I did do a search before posting but didn't find an answer.  My alternate way of doing this is in Unix with a shell script and DCRAW, but in trying to create a standard workflow, I realized this was one place that complicates things.
Again, thanks for taking the time to reply.

  • Photo Downloader Adobe Bridge CS5

    Hi
I wonder how i can save the import settings in photo downloader to always have same settings when extracting images?
It always adjust it self back to default and i need to find my location again. Any suggestins?
Also. When working in CS5, and i want to apply e.g sharpening i go to filters and the slide appears, moving down to sharpen the new "window" appears on the left side and not the right.
    What button have a touch???
    Please help
    Thanks!

    Simon

There was a bug in CS5.1 is this the version you are using?  If so here is a solution from a past thread.
If you want to maintain the Downloader dialog preferences (advanced dialog, metadata, etc.) the answer is in the thread referenced previously, but from what I've found, here's a little clarification.
N.B. This is for Windows 7 x64 (Home premium, but probably the same for Pro/Ultimate). This may work for macs too (change directory of course)
    1) Create a new folder called "Bridge CS5" (leave the Bridge CS5.1 folder at least for now. you may want to redirect your cache)
              EX: C:\Users\[Your USER NAME HERE]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS5
    2) Copy the "APDPreferences.xml" file -  if you have one - from the Bridge CS5.1 folder to the new "Bridge CS5" folder you just created (should be the only required file  in the folder). It's OK to leave the folder empty too.
    3) Make your changes to the downloader dialog, save a file or two, exit normally.
When you open it again, it should return to the defaults you just set up.

  • Image order in Bridge photo downloader

In Photoshop Elements 3 for the PC, when I used the organizer to download photos, the photos always opened up in the order in which they were taken. This made it very easy to separate shoots in different locations on the same day, or the same location on different days.
I have just found out that the photo downloader that is launched in Photoshop Elements 6 for the Mac does not do this. There is a very strange kind of grouping going on that will put a group of photos from day 2 ahead of photos from day 1. This is a major pain.
Does anyone know what the rhyme or reason is to this, and is it possible to get those photos to all open up in chronological order.
    Many thanks,
    Joe H.

Thanks Barbara. You will have to bear with me...I"m new to the Mac and I am upgrading from PSE3 to PSE 6, two very big jumps.
Okay, I found Image capture, and that did indeed keep the images in the correct order in the folder I downloaded to (but transfer is MUCH slower than in Bridge!). And I got it to launch automatically BUT... there is no provision to rename the files like there is in the Adobe downloader or bridge. Sigh.
Image Capture does not have the control that the downloader in PSE3 or PSE6 has. In Photoshop I can look at all the images and select which ones to download and give them new names at the same time.
I just don't understand why the good ol' Photoshop downloader that has behaved quite well all these years has this quirk of downloading out of order. Is that a quirk of the Photoshop/Bridge software or is it Mac thing?
I'm finding that I have to go back to my PC for file management, and I may have to resort to the same for this operation as well.
If anyone has any suggestions other than a dual system I would be eager to hear them.

Camera 1: Cannon Power Shot SX120 with a sanDisk 2GB SD card
Camera 2: Nikon D5000 with a Toshiba 32 GB SDHC card
OK I have been using the Adobe Photo Downloader ever since PSE 8 (I think) and never had a problem until now.
This is going to be a long post so please read the whole thing before replying.
Scenario: Took SD card from camera 1 and inserted it into the card reader slot on my laptop. Downloaded jpeg files into PSE11 without any problems. Removed SD card from reader and put it back into camera 1.
Tood SD card from camera 2 and inserted it into the same card reader slot on my laptop. Adobe Downloader opened and started to show the thumb nails of the pictures on the card (Raw format). After a few seconds I got the following message:
Adobe Photo Downloader has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    Error Code: c0000005
    Address: 76f73ac3
I clicked on the OK button and the downloader closed.
I then tried to download from the organizer. I got the same error. Before clicking on ok I was able to get te downloader as the current window and noticed that the 4 AVI files I had on the SD card had the hour glass symbol on them and not a picture as other times.
I then moved these 4 AVI files to a holding folder on my hard drive with windows explorer.
I then tried to download the pictures from the SD card one more time, it worked just fine.
I guess I have several questions:
Q1: I did a search on this error code (c0000005) and there seems to be a workaround but no solutions, why is this? I ask that because this problem seems to be years and years old, going back to at least 2005 (do the math that is 8 years).
Q2: I have downloaded AVI files taken with Camera 2 before without any problems, why am I getting this error all of a sudden? Before you ask the only difference is the version of PSE, I do not think I have downloaded any AVI files since installing PSE11.
Q3: I guess I do not have a third question, but if I think of one I will post it here.
Any help will be appreciated. Again I apologize for the long post.

  • Unable to open maps in Photo Downloader

    Good afternoon,
I'm using Adobe Bridge 4.0.5.11. When a camera is connected Adobe Bridge CS5 - Photo Downloader is opened.
As one of the save options I can change the map. When I want to change the map, I'm not able to select any maps and have to "force quit". The opened screen doesn't react to any inputs.
Anyone who has an idea what can be wrong?
    I've allready reinstalled CS5.
In the past I had no problems selecting the maps.
    Thanks!
    Joost

    Hi Joost,
We are still looking into the core issue on this. We have a temporary workaround which allows you to keep CR 6.5 and it is posted here:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/920/cpsid_92046.html (I'm just providing the link in case updates to that document happen)
The gist is a way to set your destination folder outside the Photodownloader UI. Selecting the 'Choose' button leads to the hang, so just avoid that for now. This workaround works best if you always save to a single directory (since you only need to update the .xml file once). If your typical method is to use the choose destinatin folder often, then for the interim, create a way station for your files and point the .xml to that path. Then move your DNGs using Bridge after their conversion to the final directory that you want them to reside.
We're very sorry for the inconvenience and are working to understand where and how to provide a full solution.
    regards,
    steve

  • Album photos do not appear on one of my albums

I have several photo albums. When opening one of my albums, there appears only white boxes (with dotted lines surrounding) for each photo. If I double-click on any of the white boxes, the image opens and I am able to edit, e-mail, print, etc.
I can not see the images on the page that usually shows the thumbnails.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Randy

    Randy:
Is the background for your photos in the thumbnail mode set to white?
Try the following: download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
    See if that will help.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
