Photo Duplication

Hi,
We have a MacMini 2.5Ghz Intel Core i5, 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
We have a bit of an issue with duplicate photographs.
When we first bought the computer we uploaded all our saved images/music/files etc from an external hard drive, which we hd salvaged following a motherboard fail on our previous laptop.
Howeever, unbeknown to us, there was many many duplicate files on that drive, specifically p[hotographs. Backing up iPods/IPads/IPhones led to even more duplicates.
The extent of the issue wasn't clear until we had launched iPhoto, when all the duplicates became visible. It has been a painstaking job, using numerous duplicate remover apps, and a lot of time and effort, but seemingly we have deleted most of the duplicates from within iPhoto itself.
However, we have not, it seems, deleted the actual physical files. The amount of our hard drive that our photos are taking up is not reducing. We desperately want to get this to a manageable level, to allow some sort of cloud storage back up, but it is still in excess of 50GB, with the majority of that duplicates.
So my questions are:
a) Where on my Mac can I find the actual physical photo files? I only seem to be able to find my iPhoto library file
b) Is there an easy way of removing duplicates within this, or if not easy, at least a method that would work? Or a really solid app that would do this.
Just to add complexity- I am not sure all the duplicates will have exactly the same name.
Any help gratefully received.
Thanks

These applications will help identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported the library.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates:  PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

  • Newbie still struggling - photo duplication

Ok,so my understanding is there's meant to be a dialogue box that pops up when/if you're trying to import a photo that is already there.
This is not working for me.  I purposely tried to import a duplicate picture and it let me - with no dialogue box .  It created a new event with the one photo in it...
How do I 'turn on' duplicate detection on importing?
Kind of completely stuck now as I don't want to continue importing if it's not picking up duplicates.
    Any help appreciated.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Photo duplication recognition software

After moving around file structures, I lost all my photos in iPhoto 6. The great people at Apple were able to fish them out of the trash and cyber world, and for that I am so thankful...BUT
It seems that every photo has been duplicated - that means I have over 20,000 photo's, half are duplicates. They are all on an external hard drive, and after spending about 4 hours trying to sort through them and delete the duplicates (not getting far), I figure there must be another option.
So does anyone know of GOOD software that works on Mac OS 10.4.11 with iPhoto 6 that will recognize duplicate photo's and delete one of them? I'm looking for anything, a download, something to purchase, but I really want something good - ie - run it, and let it do all the work!
    Any suggestions?

  • Preventing photo duplication?

Can someone please tell me how I can insert photos into a site in CS4 but make it so nobody can copy and paste the photo elsewhere?  I am starting a photography web site and want to ensure the photos can't be duplicated.  Thanks for your time.

If it shows in a browser - it can be captured. So forget about preventing any and all image downloads becuase that's how the web works - a browser sends a request to a server, the server sends back the HTML/CSS/images and other media, the browser puts it together and renders it to the user and thus the images are actually downloaded to that machine!
But there are some things that you can do to leave your mark on your work:
Photoshop a watermark on all your photos - relatively easy to do, can be difficult to remove, may mar your pretty photos.
Use Flash to present your photos - harder to do, can build in features like super high resolution images with zoom capabilities, screen captures only get a screen-resolution quality image, however Flash movies can be decompiled...
Just live with the fact that this is the way the web works, enjoy your creative life and make great photos (this can work with either option 1 or 2 or even by itself)
Of course there's the perfectly fine option of not showing your work online...

  • IPhone Photo Duplications

    Hey all!
So for a while now while importing my photos and videos from my iPhone (specifically) into Aperture I am LOST as to which to import and which have already been imported.  Obviously I do manual selection because some things I want to save into my library and others are just fun to have on my phone.  This USED to be an easy feat with the "Do not import duplicates" check box enabled.  However, those days are long gone.  I'm SURE that the problem stems from having SO MANY photos on my iPhone that they have cycled through the numbering system so if the "Duplicates" feature within Aperture ONLY recognizes file names/numbering hierarchy then it's thinking that I've already got photos that I actually don't.  So, you'd think it would be as easy as going to my last imported photo/video that appears in my library and select from that point on my iPhone... Well, you'd be WRONG.  The numbering system that Aperture is reading from my system must be JUST THAT, reading by numbers.  Because it CLEARLY is NOT going by date when in import mode.  I have to scroll way back to find new photos/videos and figure things out on the fly.  Being as I don't want to miss anything I'd LOVE it if there were a way to figure out how to get what I want, without dupliecates AND without this headache of sifting EVERY LITTLE THING.
Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Just some ideas -
When I am importing from my IOS devices, I primarily use the Photo Stream - that will always show the most recent images at the end of the stream and easy to locate.
Also I keep the camera roll empty as empty as possible and delete everything from the camera roll after importing it - a nearly empty camera roll makes importing much quicker. All images that I want on my iDevices are organized in Aperture albums, and I sync the albums back using iTunes. This way, I have a backup on my mac and can use Aperture to browse and edit them.
I see, that you want to keep photos on your iPhone, that you do not want on your mac, but if you like these photos on your phone, they should be worth to be backed up on your Mac as well.

  • Photo duplication in Elements 6 and 12.

I have used Elements 6 for some years but recently it has started to duplicate, triplicate and sometimes quadruply some photographs in the Organiser. These have been manually deleted but the fault re-occurs in other photographs. I have just installed Elements 12 but the same thing is happening. What can I do to eradicate this fault?

    Hi,
There is an option in Edit -> Preferences -> Camera or Card Reader to Copy New Files Only but I think there is a bug there so it doesn't always work.
I have found that using the Advanced options when importing and specifying something in the Owner or Copyright field seems to mess up the "already copied" test. I find it better to clear the card once I have downloaded the images ready for the next shoot.
I would be interested to know if you are adding information on import.
The normal test for duplicates is based on file name, date and size.
Do you leave images that have been imported on the card so that they could get read during the next import?
You may have more than one problem but I think it would be best to start by looking at the import workflow.

  • Duplication Issues with Photo Sync via iTunes/iPhoto and Photo Stream/iCloud (Detailed Scenario Given)

    Hi Everyone,
I'd like to share an issue I am having with photo syncing between my iDevices.
Here is how I USED to sync my Photos between my iDevices (no issues with photo duplication)
Note: In this scenario, I use iTunes and iPhoto on my Mac. iCloud and Photo stream have NOT been activated in this case.
    1. Take photos via iPhone that saves in Camera Roll
    2. After a month or so, I will connect my iPhone to my Mac.
    3. Import my Photos in iPhoto and arrange  Events and Photos in monthly sections and add some of them in a separate Albums (ex. Written Notes Photos) for easy access.
    4. Once the import is done, iPhoto prompts an option to delete photos in my Camera Roll which I do as I like to start a fresh month with empty Camera Roll in my iPhone.
    5. In order to access the Photos I have imported in iPhoto in my iPhone, I go to iTunes and sync all my photos to my iPhone. This syncs my events, photos, faces, albums as they have been arranged in iPhoto in my Mac. (I cant delete them in my iPhone once they are synced. I have to delete in my iPhoto and sync again to have similar setup in my iPhone which isn't a problem).
NOW I decided I don't want to manually go through all this process and went on to enable the Photo Stream ON in my iPhone and iPhoto with iCloud.
THIS IS WHERE THE PROBLEM ENSUES.
    1. I  Take photos with my iPhone that saves in Camera Roll
    2. This automatically syncs with my Mac due to Photo Stream which a really convenient.
    3. It syncs automatically to Photo Stream, Events, Photos, Faces section in the iPhoto and I put put some of them (notes) in a separate album.
    THE PROBLEM:
The Photos does not show up in the Album, Events and Photos Folder in my iPhone. They are only shown in Camera Roll. So I thought to sync using iTunes so the new Photos will be arranged in their appropriate folder like it used to with my prior process of syncing. This worked, HOWEVER the photos in my iPhone started showing DUPLICATES! Apparently, one comes from Photo Stream (which, if I delete on my phone also deletes in all my iDevices) and the other duplicate is from the iTunes sync (this sets up my photos as arranged in iPhoto which is what i WANT to happen as Photo Stream does not sync them accordingly).
SOLUTION I AM IN SEARCH FOR:
I want to be able to take photos with my iPhone that automatically syncs in iCloud AND iPHOTO AS ARRANGED IN MY MAC (Albums, Events etc) WITHOUT PROBLEM OF PHOTO DUPLICATES.

Other folks have resolved similar issues by trashing  the iPod Photo Cache.

  • I've downloaded Mavericks and now I cannot duplicate photos in iPhoto.  I highlight the photo and Photo Duplicate and nothing happens.  How can I duplicate?

Has anyone had the same problem of photo duplication in iPhoto with the new Mavericks OS?  All my stuff is updated and now, with Mavericks, I cannot duplicate my photos in iPhoto.

    Works here.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Merging_Catalogs

  • Duplication of Photos between iPhoto & Aperture / Memory Issues

Is there a way for iPhoto & Aperture to share the same photos, so that there is not a duplication of photos and too greatly reduce memory space for those of us with large libraries????

iPhoto only imports the files from your card, in exactly the same condition as they exist on the card. It does not duplicate. It does not reduce quality or lose pixels. Check your camera's manual. The most likely cause of the duplication is that your camera gives you a simultaneous RAW and jpeg (or tiff) file for each photo you shoot. Your camera probably has a control where you can turn this feature off.
You can check your camera card. Click on the Finder's icon in the dock. Your card should be listed as an external drive in the left column of the Finder window, somewhere below your Macintosh HD. Set the Finder window to column view and click on your card to display its contents. My bet is that you will see the duplication there, before you ever import to your library. Click on a file to see its information in the next column; you can check the pixel dimensions if they are reported there with the Preview.
I import from a card reader as well. You can ignore the initial iPhoto "Importing" screen and click back on Library in the Source Pane. Choose File > Import to Library, then navigate to the camera card. You can preview the files on the card, select only the ones you wish to import, and import directly into the iPhoto library. This gives you complete control over your imports and prevents you from importing duplicates.

  • Duplication of photos

I use a freestanding SanDisk multi-purpose memory reader in perfect working order. Plugged directly into my USB port...been there nearly a year.
I recently purchased a Nikon D80 that uses SD cards.
I shoot everything in RAW/standard with my 10.2 mega pixel camera. I placed the Memory Card into the SanDisk Reader and opened iPhoto. To my amazement iPhoto said I had twice the images I shot? When I checked after the download it Duplicated each image. i.e. I shot 125 images on one card it gave me 250 in the Album.
    Two questions:
    1. Eliminate the duplication on the initial Download - keep in mind it does not ask to eliminate duplications on the first download only the 2nd and thereafter.
    2. Is there anyway to check the Quality of the downloaded images to make sure all the pixels shot are being placed on the computer. In-other-words first generation quality.
    thanks

  • How to stop duplications in iMovie so you can add and see new added photos

How can i stop duplications and where can I find a way to stop and add more photos onto an iMovie project?
I like the app but that doesn't help me being creative if I can't add more photos and only duplicates the last photos that was added before. How can I avoid duplication and see my new added photos in my created iMovie project????

You'll know if QT pro is not installed because the majority of menus will have 'get pro' annoyingly stamped on to them. QT pro predominantly releases the ability to export.
For what you need you would probably be better off taking your movies in to iTunes, under the playback prefs choose 'playback video in artwork viewer'. You can then drag the screen to increase the size of the artwork viewer.
