Photo editing - isolation of single subject and removal of background

While watching a demo of your slide show software, and the enhancements of photos in that software, the demo showed a way to highlight or isolate one section of a photo, and effectively back out / hide / delete all other components of the photo. IE, a photo of a baseball player during a play could be reduced to just the player. It appeared relatively simple in the iworks software. Is the same opportunity possible in IPHOTO, if so, how?
Thanks

No it isn't.
You'll need an external editor for that: In order of price here are some suggestions:
Seashore (free)
_[The Gimp|http://www.gimp.org/macintosh>_ also free
Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
Acorn ($50 approx)
[Pixelmator|http://www.pixelmator.com> ($60 approx.)
Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
btw:
While watching a demo of your slide show software,

Thanks Larry. That certainly gives me some understanding. Can't imagine I'm the only Aperture user with that concern, so I certainly hope Adobe and others will fill the void. Without that feature, Photos is pretty much a non-started for me.

How to? Please...I cut and paste items, it is removed from iphoto for a few seconds then they appear again.

The photos that are appearing on the mini - are they photos taken with an iPhone or iPad? If so, open System Preferences on both computers and select the iCloud tab. On the mini, click the Photos checkmark off and on the MBP click the Photos checkmark on (if it isn't already), then start iPhoto and select Preferences. Select the Photo Stream tab and make sure Photo Stream is on.

  • What photo editing software is everyone using and why?

I am trying to find a good photo editing software to use and before spending any money on it would like to hear everyones opinion on what they use and why? Originally I intended on purchasing aperture ... but I am under the impression that aperture is being discontinued so now I am searching again ... thanks for everyones input in advance....

If after trying out iPhoto's editing capabilities for a while you find you want more capability give Adobe Photoshop Elements for Mac a try.  It's reasonably priced and can do about 75% or so of what the full Photoshop can do like these:
There's a free, open source application that's a lot like the full Photoshop: GIMP for Mac.  Another full featured editor along these same lines is Pixelmator.
Some Image Editors That Support layers:
    Photoshop Elements 11 for Mac - $79
    Pixelmator - $60
    GIMP for Mac - Free
So there are a lot of choices out there to investigate.

  • Photo/Edit-In CS6. psd image does not show in LR after save/close.

Whenever I edit (a copy) of an image in Photoshop CS6 from Lightroom 4.3 (Photo/Edit-In), after I save and close the image in CS6 the new psd image does not show in Lightroom. In order to see the image in Lightroom, I need to close Lightroom and then reopen Lightroom. It is almost like Lightroom needs to "refresh". Does anyone have a solution that does not require me to close Lightroom? I have tried to use View/Sort by extension, filename, edit time, etc. with no effect.

This should not be so. I'm assuming that you do a <save> in CS6 - as opposed to <save as>. Only with <save> the image file will automatically be imported in Lr while <save as> creates a new file that Lr "knows" nothing about until you import it (for instance via "Synchronize folder").
If the behavior you describe follows a <save> in CS6 it is not normal.
This could be due to a corrupt Preference File. This file can go "funny" and is then responsible for all kinds of strange behavior of Lr. The remedy is replacing the Preference File.
BTW: Re-installing Lr does not replace the Pref. File since it is designed to "survive" upgrades.
See here for where to find the Preference file for your OS: http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroo m-4.html

  • Freeware Photo Editing Software?

    Hi,
Does anyone know of a Freeware application that provides for easy photo editing, such as cropping, superimposing, and adding simple effects? I don't want to do anything fancy here, just something that can spruce up a photo for me.
I know that Preview can crop photos, but I am looking for more of the effects category.
    Thanks.
    ~Christoph

You can try Gimp. It's a freeware application that has alot of similar functions as Photoshop. I'm not sure how well it works, but from what I hear it's pretty good.

  • Which Photo Editing Software?

Hey guys first post here...Im looking to buy some photo editing software for personal use and could use some help in choosing the right one.
Im not sure wether to go with PSE, Photoshop, Lightroom etc (other options?). I may get more serious down the road but for now all Im looking for is basic functionality, layering, color swaps, artistic effects and all the basic touch up stuff.
My price range is around $150.
    Any feedback is appreciated, thanks.

Lightroom doesn't do most of those things, and the full Photoshop CS5 is out of your price range, so give PSE a try. Download the 30 day free trial from Adobe and see what you think.

First off it would be good to learn how to use iPhoto - editing is one of the most basic operations - what version of iPhoto do you have? Have you watched the videos and looked in Help?
In general you select the photo can click edit - to straighten you use the "Straighten tool" - to remove areas around the photo you use the "crop tool"

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Moving photos from photostream to your library just imports them, it doesn't remove it from photostream, therefore photostream won't disappear.
Photos in photostream can't be edited, you can only edit photos that have been imported from photostream.

  • If I set Firefox to refrain from loading images automatically, how can I view a single image, or a single page's images, without having to enter the site in the Exceptions list, only to go back and remove it when I'm done?

I was hoping for a hotkey option or button on the toolbar to load images for a single page for a single session at a time. Turning off images really saves bandwidth and speeds load time on websites, but sometimes I'd like to view the images on a page, but only for this session. Is that possible, or do I have to go to the Exceptions page and allow a specific domain or page to load images and then go back and remove that domain or page when I'm done?

  • Is it legal to sell photos edited in trial and beta verisons of Photoshop?

I recently downloaded the new CS6 beta version of photoshop and since I am interested in stock photography I was wondering if it's legal and not againts Adobe's rules to sell photos edited in trial and beta versions of Photoshop? I mean, since you haven't bought them and just trying them out.
I really haven't found info about it, yet. Adobe terms and policy are little overwhelming
    Thanks.
p.s. I hope I asked the question on the right place

The last time that I read the EULA, the only restriction on commercial or production work was on beta/pre-release software. So you could use the CS5 trial but not the CS6 beta.

  • How do I put photos in an album and remove them from the camera roll?

I would like to be able to move photos into an album and remove them from the camera roll. Is this possible?
I take many photos of mundane things that I simply want to remember, such as serial number of products. I would like to save these photos for viewing, but I don't want them to appear in my camera roll, where I have to continuously scroll through many such photos to get to the ones that I want to view there.
I know that Apple has a "hide" feature, but it doesn't actually do anything. When I press-and-hold on individual photos, the photos stay in the camera roll: they aren't hidden at all. It's not clear what the purpose of this function is at all.

You don't do this, as the photos are in the camera roll.  That is where they live.  When you make an album you are simply making a list of pointer to your photos in camera roll.
If you remove them from the camera roll, then they are gone.
Photos in albums are not in two places.  They are in only one place, the camera roll.  The album merely contains pointers to those pics, so that you can categorize them however you like.
You should be importing these pics to your computer.  I find it far easier to organize my photos on my computer, then sync them to the iPhone.

  • Need to backup and remove photo library form my iphone.  This library was previously backup on a hard drive that crashed.  So these photos are only in the photo library and not in the camera roll.  If I do a full backup, it only takes the camera roll.

Need to backup and remove photo library from my iphone.  This library was previously backup on a hard drive that crashed.  So these photos are only in the photo library and not in the camera roll.  If I do a full backup, it only takes the camera roll.
So this is a 2 part question:
    1) how to I backup the Photo Library to my new hard drive (as the last one was unrecoverable but previously backed up)
    2) how do I remove the Photo Library form my phone (preferably after backup in item 1)
    Thanks, Janis

Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
Let this be a very important lesson learned.
    Best.
