Photo Editing Software for the Intel Mac

I've just gotten a Nikon D50 and am trying to figure out what software to purchase to use on my Intel Imac. Obviously something that runs natively would be ideal, but "good" performance would be enough. I'm just an amateur photographer looking to improve my pictures.
Aperture is pricey and has gotten mixed reviews. Nikon is coming out with new Capture software next month (NX I believe), but it doesn't look like it will run natively on the Intel Mac.
Photoshop Elements might be the ticket, though of course it won't run natively now. It will, I believe, allow for "spot" editing, something that the still-beta Lightroom won't do, and something I think I want to be able to do.
Should I consider Boot Camp and PSE for Windows? Would that be a better experience than running the Mac version on my Intel machine? Looks like there's better pricing on the Windows version (at least on Ebay) than the Mac version, but so far I have resisted Boot Camp...hoping to stay out of the Windows world as much as possible.
Is there something else I should be looking at?
I know I'm all over the map here...I'm kind of confused, and just want to get to work making some of these pictures look better. Thanks.

I have a similar question. I don't think I need all the power of Photoshop CS or GIMP, but is there a photo editing package that can change backgrounds of photos? For example, change a black background to white? Can iPhoto do this? Can Photoshop Elements run on iMac Intel? Can PS Elements do this kind of editing? Thanks.

  • Other photo editing software for the Mac

Couldn't really find a category to put this question, so please bare with me. I have read some stuff about iPhoto (any version?) sometimes giving problems. Was wondering what other kinds of photo editing software is good to use on Tiger. PhotoShop Elements etc.? I have a Sawtooth 400mHz with 620MB of RAM. My Tiger is the original release: 10.4, but plan on updating to a newer version shortly.
    Thanks.

To add to Larry's list: take a look at Pixelmator also.
These are some of the system requirements for iLife 08:
    "System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 processor.
iMovie requires a Mac with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9GHz or faster). iMovie HD 6 can still be used and is preferred by many of us.
iDVD requires a 733MHz or faster processor.
512MB of RAM; 1GB recommended. High-definition video requires at least 1GB of RAM.
Mac OS X v10.4.9 or later.
    3GB of available disk space.
    DVD drive required for installation.
    QuickTime 7.2 or later.
Burning DVDs requires an Apple SuperDrive or compatible third-party DVD burner. "
It doesn't look like your G3 meets the system requirements. You may be able to install some parts of iLife 08 but I'm not sure. Do a search in this forum for "G3 and iPhoto" or other similar search criteria to see if others have been successful.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Hi, I need a video editing software for my Power Mac G5 system. Hunted all over for one! Can anyone help me and point me in the right direction. Everything I come across is for intel based systems. Many thanks in advance.

I have Final Cut Studio V1 - the PPC/Intel V5/5.1 cross-grade version, which would suit your requirements perfectly. (I have it for sale at present down here).
If you keep looking, you're sure to find a similar second hand copy in your area, without the need to upgrade your graphics card.
I'd go for Final Cut Pro as above over any version of Express. FCP has the full version of LiveType - not the truncated version that was released later on.

  • Free photo editing software for Macs & PCs?

    Hi folks!
I am looking for a free photo editing software to use for an upcoming class. I have a MacBook at home, but I will be teaching in a classroom equipped with PCs. I was hoping to find a free software that students could practice on in class and then download free for use at home afterward.
Have been trying to download Gimp 2.8.2, but I can't get it to install on my Mac OS 10.6.8 - It downloads but will not start.
Please let me know any suggestions.
    Thanks in advance!

i guess i want something where you can directly play with the images...cut out a section of the picture.....replace it with something else (like add icon/pictures over top of it)
also, the ability to paint colors over the picture and alter them in other ways, not just image quality or resizing it...
if there are no free programs for this, what are some cheap ones?
i looked at the programs that have been posted alreaedy, and i don't think that they are really what im looking for...
    thank you!

  • What is the best photo editing software for newbies

Would you recommend Photoshop elements for a newbie to Apple platform.
Have editing background but not very proficient in Photoshop.

iPhoto, which actually comes free with your Mac, does some basic, yet powerful things in photo editing.
I recommend Aperture because it does two things very well. First, it's like iPhoto in that it organizes photos, which is a separate App when you enter the Adobe ecosystem.
The second thing is that Aperture is extremely powerful in editing photos. But more than that you can purchase even more powerful plug-ins that have Photoshop counterparts. In other words, you can grow with Aperture from powerful photo editing/organizing tool. And as you need to get into other things like HDR editing, you can buy plug ins from photo software developers like Nik Software.
I'm a huge fan of Aperture, and I've done some cool things with it. There are huge philosophical debates between how Aperture deals with editing imaging and how the Photoshop world does, but you're a "newbie", so Aperture may be your best start in life. It's very Mac-centric. Apple supports it. And frankly, the support community here is probably one of the most vibrant on all of Apple (other than the film editing ones).

  • Best photo editing software for HDR and Blk and white? Thx!

This is my first mac and new to photo editing.. I was wondering what Software I should get for photo editing? I found the HDR function on my iPhone and love the pictures that it takes... I wanted to get more out of my nikons and do some HDR editing and black and whites..In the past I would just print no editing.. I am also not a computer person so please excuse my lack of terminology for this topic. I just found out that i need plug ins for the different programs! Thanks for your time and feedback

    Here's the catch:
I am also not a computer person
But Photo Editing is a very "computery" thing. There are lots and lots of options. Some are very easy to use but not very good. Some require learning and are very good indeed. I suggest you explore Photoshop Elements which you can read about here
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-elements.html
There is a learning curve but there are lots of tutorials and support material at the Adobe Site.
You can also download a free trial there.

  • Netmeeting compatible video conferencing software for the Intel iMac?

I am currently using XMeeting V0.2, but the received video leaves a lot to be desired. The image quality, even at a slow frame rate and on a gigabit LAN, is no where near as good as on a PC running Netmeeting. In contrast, the transmitted video is perfect. I've played with the settings, but nothing seems to help. Anyone using XMeeting? If so, what settings are you using? Any other video conferencing Intel Mac software (free to cheap) I should try?

    The only one listed on
    http://www.applechat.info/
    for Netmeeting is:
    ohphoneX
Don't know if it is Intel Mac compatible.
You may also want to find out if any of the Windows solutions work well on Boot Camp or Parallel's Workstation, or Wintel Mac OS X which offer the ability to run a variety of Windows versions on Intel Macs.

2004 G5 doesn't have Intel, what recommendations for photo editing outside of iPhoto do you suggest?  Adobe Elements 2?

Graphic Converter 6 for your version of OS X.
If you upgrade the OS to OS X10.5 Leopard, Graphic Converter 7
Plus, Adobe has its complete CS2 suite of apps available as a free download, now.

  • Photo recovery software for the 3G?

recently lost all photo files from my iPhone 3G and am looking for any file recovery software that is compatible with it...

If the photos were taken on the phone, did you not transfer them to your computer? They may be in your iTunes backup on your computer, check with MobileSyncBrowser (Google it).
If you're taking about pics in the Photo Library, those were synced from your computer and should stil be on your computer.

  • What is some good video editing software for the Imac?

We just got a Imac for my church but Imovie is not cutting it, I need software that can capture video through a firewire. Can then edit it with adding effects such as fading in and out. Then it needs to be able to/have included software that I can use to put the video onto a dvd. I want to know of the best stuff out there. Thanks!

I need software that can capture video through a firewire.
Here is how I do it (I have tried almost everything).
For maximum quality here is my procedure:  ADVC300 > iMovie 06 > iDVD 11
    http://www.videoguys.com/Item/Grass+Valley+ADVC300/035303230363.aspx
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11, why?
iMovie 09/11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.

  • Best photo editing software for iPad?

    Is Adobe Photoshop the best?

  • Photo editing app for the iPhone 4

  • I am looking for a good photo editing software, only editing, not sharing etc

any recommendation for a good photo editing software for starters, only to enhance picture, play arounf with colours in black and white background etc.

In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    The Gimp (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Pixelmator ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Which Photo Editing Software?

Hey guys first post here...Im looking to buy some photo editing software for personal use and could use some help in choosing the right one.
Im not sure wether to go with PSE, Photoshop, Lightroom etc (other options?). I may get more serious down the road but for now all Im looking for is basic functionality, layering, color swaps, artistic effects and all the basic touch up stuff.
My price range is around $150.
    Any feedback is appreciated, thanks.

Lightroom doesn't do most of those things, and the full Photoshop CS5 is out of your price range, so give PSE a try. Download the 30 day free trial from Adobe and see what you think.
