Photo editing with glossy screen- As bad as "they" say ???

Here I am all set to replace my 20" G5 iMac with one of the sweet 24" models that just came out today. Only hesitation is that I use it for photo editing-color and density corrections with lab prints (Fuji Frontier) as my final product. Other that the reflection issue are the glossy screens really all that bad for my needs ? Can they be calibrated for accurate color rendition ? If not what was Apple thinking ? Are they trying to force serious photographers into buying the Mac Pro ? Or could I buy the new 20" iMac and just add a quality outboard monitor for my Photoshop and Lightroom work ?

It remains to be seen how useable the new imac screen is. Certainly, on the whole, glossy screens are not at all desirable for any work where color accuracy is important. Most glossy screens have increased saturation and contrast, which makes movies look terrific, but is really **** for getting a decent calibration or doing fine adjustments to images.
It's possible that Apple has figured out a way around this, but I do wonder why it was not mentioned during the presentation if so.
I was all set to get one, but not now.
EDIT, but yes, an external monitor would be a good workaround

  • Laptop monitor choice for photo editing with lightroom and photoshop

    Hi,
i'm going to buy a laptop, mostly for photo editing with lightroom and photoshop use.
I'm in trouble with the display choice.
One laptop has LG LP156WF4 or AUO B156HAN01 display, that should be very similar matte ips display with 55%-60% coverage of AdobeRGB. You can find a review in the "Display" section of these link : http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Clevo-W650SJ-Schenker-M504-Barebones-Notebook.114329.0 .html
The other laptop hasAU Optronics B156HW01 V.4 Matte 95%, that is a TN matte display with  95% coverage of AdobeRGB. You can find a review in these link (the display should be the green bar): http://www.anandtech.com/show/4649/mythlogic-pollux-1400-clevos-w150hr-tested/6
My question is: which one is better for photo editing with photoshop and lightroom?
Someone says that ips is better because of the fidelity of color reproduction, view angles and contrast.
Someone, on the other side, says that the TN 95% is better because of the gamut%.
    Can you help me?
    Thanks,
    Marco Grechi

Macbook pro is out of budget
Hp assistance said that in italy they don't sell laptop with dreamcolor (i'll call again tomorrow to be sure ) but i think that it would be out of budget (max 2000 euro).
They said that the best solution for me is the zbook 15 g2 (2300 euro), but they DON'T know brand and model of the display and if i can have SSD + HD inside the zbook 15 g2.
The laptop with the lg panel costs 1500 euro. the question is; "i know that the lg display is not the best, but is it almost sufficient for my use?". In this way i may save 500/800 to buy a separated display later.
I have read that dell xps 15 and dell precision m3800 have great display, but they are glossy and very reflective. Is it a big handicap?
    Do you know the 3k 15,6" display Panasonic VVX16T020G00 ? It should be a 8-bit display with 72%NTSC gamut ( http://www.panelook.com/VVX16T020G00_Panasonic_15.5_LCM_parameter_22014.html )
Do you sugget me a 3k display for photo editing?
    Thanks

Thanks Larry. That certainly gives me some understanding. Can't imagine I'm the only Aperture user with that concern, so I certainly hope Adobe and others will fill the void. Without that feature, Photos is pretty much a non-started for me.

  • IPhone Photos edited with iOS 7 losing adjustments in Aperture

I shot a few photos with iOS 7 this weekend while at the cottage and was importing them into Aperture (which I use to manage my rather large collection). I noticed that for some reason some of the adjustments were now missing. Yes my crops and auto enchancements were there but the colour effects I applied were not.
Just curious if anyone knows how to work around this? I figured I could always open the edited photos in another app like Camera+ and save them out again but that seems to be poor form as it'd result in generation loss.
    Any suggestions?

Could you give more details please, so we can compare notes?
How are you editing and transfering your photos - editing directly in the Camera.app, the Photos.app, iPhoto IOS?
And what kind of IOS device? iPad, iPod, iPhone?
And how have the photos been transferred to your Mac? Photo Stream? Import by connecting the device?
I just made a test on my iPad with IOS 7 and all edits transferred:
Taking the pictures with the Camera.app
Editing them in the Camera.app and saving the edited version to the camera roll.
The edited version with all edits appeared in the Photo Stream (a few hours later ) and all edits were there.
But if you edited in the Photos.app and not in the Camera.app, it is harder to get the edited version to the Camera Roll. I use iPhoto to save an edited copy of the photo to the camera Roll (from the "Share" menu in iPhoto). That adds them to the Photo Stream as well.
But the biggest problem with this is, that saving back to the Camera Roll after editing in iPhoto appears to be changing all dates and the lens information anad Camera Make is now missing from the EXIF..
The photo I took yesterday should show the dates like this:  Sept. 23,
But it is showing Sept. 24 for all dates:
So my suggestion would be to do basic edits in the Camera.app before the photos will be saved to the Camera Roll for the first time, and to postpone all further edits, until the photos are in Aperture. Or, to keep both versions in the camera roll, the original and the edited version.

  • MacBook pro photo editing with LaCie thunder bolt 2

Bought LaCie little big Thunderbolt 2 for my wife's raw photo editing she uses Mac book pro a lot of the time but the loading time for each photo is unexceptable.  We thought with this purchase based on how fast it is suppose to be we must be doing Something wrong can anyone help with this?

Can you be more specific? What app is she using to open the files? Which version of OS X? Did you format the drive or just take it out of the box and start using it? How long is too long?

  • Can't transfer any photo edited with Auto Enhance.

Ok...I have a TOTAL love/hate relationship with my iphone 4s.  I love the Auto Enhance feature, but once I have enhanced a photo, I am unable to transfer the EDITIED photo to the cloud or to my PC!  Why Not?  This totally seems to be against the Apple advertising which states "you can edit something here, and it appears There" and so on and so forth.   That's just not happening. Apple has tricked us, I'm afraid!!!  I spend a bunch of time cropping and editing photos and then the only place I can view them is in my iPhone?  I'm so frustrated! I've been looking for weeks on end online for a solution, even local iphone experts don't have an answer!  come on !!! HELP!  I'm using a Windows PC with Vista.  If you can give me the right answer, you will be the smartest person I know!  Unbelievable!!!

For your laptop, a lot of computers don’t provide enough power to their USB ports to charge the iPad at a sufficient rate - it may still be charging slowly, and should be a bit quicker if the iPad's screen is off (if you leave it for a while and then disconnect it from your computer you may find that it's battery percentage has gone up). The wall charger is usually the most efficient way to charge the iPad.
If your iPad's wall charger is also not charging it then have you tried a soft-reset to see if it charges after the iPad has restarted ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
If not then have you tried a different charger and/or cable ? Do you know anybody else with an iPad so that you can try their charger and cable and they can try yours ?

  • Photos edited with Photoshop and saved to iPhoto don't show up in album?

When I edit photos in PSCS4, rename them, and save them to the original iPhoto album, they do not reappear. When I use the "finder", I can see that they are saved to the modified folder within iPhoto with their new filename. Is there a way to save them so that they will reappear in the original album?
    Rick

    FWIW:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: iPhoto 8's new option in it's rebuild library window, "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" may make this tip obsolete. We'll know when users have occasion to use it and see if that's the case.

  • How can I import photos edited with Photos on iPad to iPhoto on Mac, including all edits??

During a long vakantion trip, I took many pictures and imported them in Photos on my iPad. And during the trip I edited many photos: croppig, changing colors and brightness, etc.
Now back home, I would like to import all these photos into iPhoto on my Mac, including all the edits of course.
I imported a few hundred and saw at once that the edits were not imported completely and not correctly (probably most is not imported).
Can anyone please advise how this should be done.
    Thank you very much,
    Frans

Making a trip, I import, select and edit pictures, as I have the time to do so. So, when I come back home, I expect importing to the Mac and reviewing only.
You are caught in the transit.  If you still had iOS 7, that would have been no problem. Your edits in iPhoto on the iPad would have transferred to the  Mac, and you would even have been able to undo the Camera filters. Unfortunately, iOS 8 is ahead of the photo applications on the Mac.  The sidecar files with the edits transfer to the mac, but no software that I know of can read them. It will be better in a few month.
Do you know of any other application which can be used on both, iOS and OS X, to edit photos??
Right now, the only app I know is Pixelmator.
Pixelmator on the iPad can save and open files on iCloud Drive. But you would need to upgrade your Mac to Yosemite to use the new Pixelmator for Mac and to be able to access iCloud Drive from the Mac.

  • Not able to see photos edited with photoshop

Is there an issue with editing a photo with photoshop that has been imported into iphoto and then being able to see the "saved as" version in iPhoto?
I have done just this: right-click the thumbnail in iphoto/select "show file"/open with/Photoshop, edit the photo and save as the same file name + ".1" in the same location as the original file, looking in iPhoto the new "saved as" version does not display.
If I try to import the photo, it is difficult to access the directory where iPhoto stores the files--I did eventually figure out how to do it, and when I did, the import failed, the dialogue box saying that it could not import because the file was already in the iPhoto library.
Does anyone know how to solve this issue?
    Thanks,
    HM

  • PSE 5.0 photo 'Edit With" Phososhop

My operating system is Vista SP-1 and my difficulty has occurred without, and now with SP-1, with both Photoshop CS2 and CS3, and with a few thousand photos in PSE and now with 18,000+. I like using PSE for organizing my photos, although I much prefer using Photoshop CS3 for nearly all editing. When I use CTRL H to transfer an image to PSE 5.0 all works properly. When I close out of the image in Photoshop, and have it save the file, when I come back the Elements I am often returned back to the beginning of my 18,000 photographs! Finding my place again is very frustrating and a waste of time.
I have even had PSE at times, when using the "Auto Smart Fix", do the same thing when the editing was complete.
I have looked through the forums and apparently I am the only one with this issue, so I hope someone can help me find a solution for this frustrating problem. I am quite computer savvy if it takes that.

  • Mulitple Photo Editing with PS Elements as iPhoto 6 Editor

Currently I am using PS Elements 4 as my iPhoto editor. When I 'select all' within an Album and select 'Edit' PS Elements only opens 4 photos regardless of how many I selected within iPhoto.
Even if a manually select more than 4 photos in iPhoto, PS Elements still only opens 4 for editing.
Does anyone know who I can have PS Elements open all the selected items I have selected within iPhoto?
    Hope this makes sense.

    MV:
Just can't be done. To get more than 4 open in PE you have to go 4 at a time. It's just the nature of the beast. You can submit a feature request at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html

  • IMac Glossy Screen: Photo/Design Professionals

Would be interested to hear thoughts from photography and design professionals who have purchased the new, specifically, 24" iMac with glossy screen and are using it for their work.
I am a photographer and designer, and have mine on order for the 28th, however having read much about the displeasure with glass screen from many users, I am beginning to have reservations about my soon-to-arrive purchase.
I am using the older 20's at the work studio and found them very sufficient for my needs and therefore wanted a similar/better convention at home studio, hence the new machine.
    Thank you.

I have to agree in that some of my own stuff looked good on the new glossy screen. It was vivid but the color was not accurate. Generally, glossy screens do not cut it for accuracy and calibration. Possibly this screen is different but then there is this:
    http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1017&message=24321625
Obviously, someone else may have a different experience or dpreview could revise theirs in time.
When I have discussed the new iMac w/ staff at the Apple Store they steer me to the Mac Pro and 17" MacBook Pro. One went so far as to say using the new iMac would be frustrating because while photos displayed on the 24" screen may look good they would look different when printed. Another solution is to add a 23" or 30" Apple Cinema Display. Seems to defeat the idea of the "all-in-one" iMac though.
It was also pointed out in one of these other threads, that the graphics card in the new iMac does not appear on the list of recommended cards for use w/ Aperture. Possibly this is an oversight and that part of Apple's website has not been updated.
It depends on your market and your own preferences. If you have demanding clients and have to be able to reproduce a particular shade of a color, that is say, a specific corporate color, like Coca-Cola Red, a glossy screen is probably not a good solution. If you are selling images to the general public, then maybe a glossy screen could work fine. If you are in certain markets you will probably need a SWOP-certified screen and so far the new iMac's is not one.
Good luck, I think Apple has forced some difficult choices upon those on a tight budget.

  • Glossy Screen bad for eyes?

Well, I am planning to get a macbook pro very soon. And I know a friend who can get a small discount off it and I asked him for a macbook pro with glossy screen and he just emailed me saying that glossy screen is bad for your eyes in the long run due to the glare from it. He knows this because his wife works at a LCD company or something. Are they correct? Because I know glossy screen makes the color and images sharper.

Well, I'm no expert in the field of LCD screens. I prefer the matte screen for one reason alone: antiglare. I never know where I will be using the laptop, so I prefer a screen that will help block glare. The glossy screens artificially enhance the image, so any graphics work may be slightly off. I've noticed that this matte screen is a bit different from matte screens of the past. It seems to be more of a luster (cross between glossy and matte).
But, it truly is a matter of personal preference. Stop by an Apple Store and look at both. Some college campuses have their own versions of Apple Stores, if there is one near you, go to the bookstore and see if they have both on display.
    Good Luck!

  • Photo orientation with AppleTV

    Hello all
I have been having some problems with photo orientation in AppleTV screen saver and in viewing the iPhoto library on AppleTV. I did all the usual things, restarted the Apple TV, restarted computer, etc. What was really strange was the photos I had changed rotation in iPhoto were all good. It was AppleTV which wasn't seeing them as 'corrected' images. What AppleTV was doing, was seeing the original photos, rather than the edited versions (the correctly oriented photos).
What I had to do was go to the original source of the photo. So I had to click on the photo, then go to File, see original file. The original file was still in the incorrect position. Once I opened this in preview and corrected it, it seemed to work. Will keep you posted. What is also interesting to note is that AppleTV was having problems with the original picture files of photos taken with a camera, rather than with the iPhone. There seems to be a bug here about how the AppleTV sees original and corrected files when the photos are taken with a digital camera.
Keen to know what others have found.
    Happy AppleTV travels everyone.

Updating the information regarding photo orientation with AppleTV screen saver.
Clear instructions: Click on photo in iPhoto, then go to File, choose 'Reveal in Finder', select 'Original File'. A window opens up where the original photo file is held. Open the photo in Preview. Rotate photo as needed. Close and save. You are done. Restart your AppleTV and turn your photos on and off to share in iTunes. Ta Da, it all works and it's very easy.
    Hope this is helpful.
