Photo file numbers - duplicates

Hi,
My digital camera can take 9999 photos. I have just this week taken more than that this year and the camera started over with numbering the files (0001, 0002 etc.) When I put these into iphoto will it over write the photo files I took earlier in the year that now have the same file numbers?
Thanks

wojopaul:
No, they won't be overwritten. iPhoto will put them into folders based on the date to correspond to the Events preferences you've set up. If two photos are added to the same event iPhoto will append a "_2" to the file name as it moves it to the folder.
However, you can run into problems if you try to export a number of photos that end up having the same file name (but not in the same event). In those cases you should rename the photos with the Batch Change option and export with the option to use the title instead of the file name.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Photo file numbering system oddity

First time poster, long time lurker. I have over 1000 photos on my iPhone and I love it as a tool. But one thing I noticed, that is maybe a bug - or maybe a feature but I doubt it:
The photo file numbering system - when you get past IMG_0999 and surpass 1000, it will go back to numbering the files from IMG_0001. That creates a huge issue when I try to sync the newly created files back onto any computer as it will attempt to overwrite any file with an identical file name as the new one, or vis versa.

this is kind of discouraging for me.. as now I'll have to create multiple folders to hold my iphone pix.. i guess one for every month? I just went over the 1000 mark and now i cant back up my photos without putting them somewhere else... this is going to make finding pictures very difficult.
why have a filename of IMG_XXXX if you only change 3 digits of it? they could support up to 10K pictures if they used all 4 digits!
anyone have anymore info on this?

Photos can display the titles of the photos below the thumbnails. But while iPhoto used the filenames with the file numbers as titles as a default title, if no title had been assigned, Photos does not do that.  Filenames are only shown in the Info panel for a photo. You have to copy the filename to the title filed manually.
A posted an AppleScript to help with this task as a user tip, see this link:  Photos for Mac: Batch Changing the Titles to the Filename

  • Duplicate photo files  being created in Bridge

I have a Mac Book pro with sno leopard and use CS5 and am having weird issues with photos from my canon 5d mk II and 7 d. Bridge is creating duplicate photo files after I download them. Sure adobe told me to purge my cache , ok, that works but it just starts re creating them again?

You can set up a scan when you create a new device in System Preferences:
go to System Preferences --> FCSVR Pref pane --> Devices Pane and then choose create new device ("+" sign and the Device Assistant will appear. You choose the type and then you can set up a Full or Add only Scan here.)
Other option is to set up a Scan via the Administration window in the Java Client:
This is not as easy since there is no Device Assistant.
go to Admin window in Java Client --> Response and then create a new 'Scan' response on the device you want to scan. 'Scan Productions' is something different, maybe you want that instead, I don't know. Depending on how you set it up, it can create a Production in FCSVR catalogue for each folder or subfolder and that media will be scanned and placed into that Production in FCSVR catalogue.
Anyways, once you create the Scan Response, go to Admin pane --> Schedule. Create a new schedule and add the 'Scan' response you just created to the "Response List" section. Don't forget to check "Enabled"...can't tell you how many times I created the response but then forgot to enable it.
Once you scan the assets, they are in the FCSVR catalogue with clip proxies, thumbnails and posterframes. If you have existing FCP projects that use this media, you will want to make sure the media in the FCP project is connected to that same media that was scanned. When you upload the FCP project, it will not dup the assets, just add the FCP project to it, unless you didn't set the EIP device correctly. If you look in Search All Jobs, the only thing that should be generated at this point it Edit Proxies (if you enabled them) and Elements.
Now my question to you is the same as Chris' question here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9147105#9147105. How did you set things up so far? What is your workflow? Where is your media?

I have one album named "iPad". I don't recall how it got there, where it is there by default or if I created it. Nothing in this album shows a trash can in either full or thumbnail view - I can only edit or share or add to.
In full view mode, when I click on "edit" the upper left shows "cancel". The other greyed out options next to "cancel" are "undo" and "revert to original".  The bottom shows the usual photo editing tools, but no "edit". Most of the other pictures show the trash can, which is located on the bottom right corner in camera roll in full view mode. In thumbnail mode when I click "select" on the upper right corner and choose a photo the trash can appears on the upper left corner". This all seems normal. However, the "iPad" album behaves different.

  • How can I get iPhoto to display ONLY file numbers of pictures and not document titles when displayed as thumbnails?

I am a pro photographer and I've never used iPhoto. I use a combination of Adobe's Bridge, Lightroom & Photoshop programmes.  I've sent a disk of images to a client and they cannot see the file numbers of the images.  Their version of iPhoto only displays the document title that I have embedded in the metadata when importing the images into Bridge.
When I ran a test and imported the same images into my version of iPhoto(7.1.5, since you ask) some of the thumbnails displayed the file number while others displayed the document title.  Why does this happen?  Can I make it stop?  How do I make iPhoto display just the file number in thumbnail mode and not the document title?
When I view the images in Bridge, all I see is the file number but I can't convince the client to use the programme even though they have it.  Any help/guidance will be very gratefuly received.
    Many thanks,
    Adam.

In every version prior to iPhoto 11:
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File...
    In iPhoto 11:
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original...

  • Photo File Size and Photoshop processing

On  previous discussion, Steve Grisetti noted that problems with burning are sometimes associated with photo file size.  The post stated that Photoshop Elements has a batch processing selection that can resize photos all at once.  I when to Photoshop, selected process multiple file, selected source, save in same as source, and resize images 1000.  When I viewed my photos after, about 50 of my photos were now duplicates of other photos For example, I put all my pictures in timeline order prior to doing my video.  If I found a NEW photo after I had already scanned and named the photos, I would place the NEW photo in the picture folder by adjusting accordingly:  1.jpg, 2.jpg 3.1.jpg 3.jpg The 3.1.jpg would be the NEW photo.  Photoshop replaced 3.1jpg with the picture in 3jpg.  Does anyone know how to restore my photos back to the original "3.1jpg"?  The backup is not accessible at this time.

If I understand you correctly you have been using the renaming feature and the parameters you used caused file1 to be renamed to a pre-existing filename (file2). If this is so then you probably have lost the original file2. An undelete utility may help (try Piriform Recuva).
For the future when using batch conversion it is good practice to select a new folder for the outputted files.
It is also good practice to burn all image originals to a CD or DVD immediately after importing from your camera. This way you can always recover originals.
Here are a couple of screenshots, the first from Elements Organizer and the second from Photoshop Elements. Which one did you use and what parameters did you enter?

  • Photo file issues with iWeb and Aperture....also too much duplicating!!

A little background, before I get into my iWeb issue.....
Years ago I tried iPhoto, but I didn't like how it duplicated all my photo files and I wasn't very fond of the file structure it created. Years later (last month) I got Aperture. Aperture (still has a long way to go) also duplicates all your files and places them in their own file structure. If I can get along with Aperture (and if it will get along with my other programs), I won't mind putting all my files into the file structure it creates. But for now, I still have my original files in the original file structure I have had for many years as a back up.
On to my issue with iWeb and Aperture....
To add photos to iWeb, you can either go into the iWeb media center or you can drag and drop photos from other locations.
    1st: iWeb media center
To get my photos into the media center, I would have to load them into iPhoto (iP 6 does allow you to keep your original file structure, but it still creates .jpg files, which fills up your hard-drive. More duplicates I don't need or want). So that is out for me. iP6 will let you view and use your Raw files.
Another way is to drag and drop your file structure directly into the media center window. I don't think this duplicates any files (at least I haven't been able to find any), but it takes an awfully long time to thumbnail all your photos (several hours and still waiting for 22K + files). Also, it won't show any Raw files. Again, out for me.
Aperture won't let you drag and drop its library into the media center at all. So if I was to move all my files into the Aperture Library, I wouldn't be able to access them for iWeb at all.....Out for me.
    2nd: Drag and Drop
I was able to drag and drop Raw files directly into iWeb from C1 Pro, Adobe Bridge and Adobe Lightroom.
As I said before, I am trying to move over to Aperture. However, Aperture won't let me drag and drop photos. What is the deal here??? These are both Apple programs and they won't play nice with each other. Very annoying.
Anyway, I put a link below to my iWeb test webpage I made. All the photos were Raw files that I did a drag and drop from C1 Pro, Adobe Bridge and Lightroom. There were no problems with the publishing.
    http://web.mac.com/phil_navarro/iWeb/Site%202/Drag%20and%20Drop%20test.html
So, does anyone know if they can get photos from Aperture to work?? Thanks for any responses.
    Phil

    Jedi,
    Perhaps you are right.
I am not a web developer and I will never be. I don't feel like spending countless hours learning how to use Dreamweaver or some other Pro web app. iWeb looked like a way to start making websites of my photos for my friends and family (much easier and better than Home Page on .Mac). All I was asking was for a way to drag and drop my photos (especially Raw files) with Aperture. Which I can do with Lightroom, Adobe Bridge and C1 Pro, and without using iPhoto.
I am not a Pro photographer either, but I purchased Aperture based on what was advertised on the Apple website. From that ad, Aperture fit my photo needs almost to a tee. I am looking to adjust Raw files, Crop, Archive and keep my use of Hard Disk space down to a minimum. I can use Photoshop for the other 5% of things I do. However, Aperture has some issues (if you own it, then you already know. If you don't, you can read the Aperture Forum) This is one of the reasons I never went to iPhoto for archiving. I didn't like the way it duplicated all my files, taking up more disk space and its file structure. So even though Aperture won't play nice with other programs, I was surprised that it wouldn't play nice with any Apple programs.
After reading your post and based on what you are saying, everyone either needs to have/learn/use Pro apps only or have/learn/use iApps only. Don't Cross the Streams!!
I guess that means Apple will need to fix DVD Studio Pro. It uses photos that are in your iPhoto library and music from iTunes (iApps in a Pro app??....for shame...."it was never intended"). Also, DVD SP won't read the Aperture library. Does that mean there are 3 platforms? Pro, iApp and Mediocre??
    Now I have 2 questions:
    1. Can someone please tell me which apps are Pro and iApp, or if there is Mediocre? I don't want to mix them up and "Cross the Streams".
    2. Again....is there anyway to use Aperture with iWeb?
    TIA,
    Narvon

I am trying to load photo files onto my new 5th generation ipod but they don't load as the logical 1 to 2 to 3..... file numbers as I have organised in itunes photo folder. No, the Nano has no WiFi capability. Try the app Senuti.

  • Huge photo file

I duplicated a photo file in iPhoto (5.0.4), and then did a little editing on the duplicate image- I cropped it so that I could use the image in the contact info on my iPhone.
Today, I was preparing to update to iLife '08 and noticed that in the Finder my iPhoto Library had ballooned to 60 GB!!! It had been around 20 GB a month ago and is still noted as such within iPhoto. I searched around in the Finder and found that the duplicate file was now a 32.57 GB jpg file.
iPhoto reported this as a 2 MB file, I put it in the trash anyway, and then emptied the trash. So the file is no longer displayed in iPhoto, but that huge file still lurks in the iPhoto Library folder.
I understand that iPhoto does not like to have its files mucked around in the Finder, but it appears that is the only way to get rid of this file- especially since it no longer appears in iPhoto. Can anyone give me an answer on how to deal with this?
    Thanks. Joel.

Yes, it was iPhoto's trash. And your answer is how I guessed it would work, but it is good to have someone else's input.
It's funny, I do have plenty of space, but I didn't want to back it up. I'll just go ahead and do it. ::grin::
Have you ever heard of a 32 GB jpg file? I was very surprised to see that, especially as it started life as at 2 MB, I didn't make that many changes to it.
    Thanks for your help. Joel.
