Photo filenames being changed, due to Photostream?

I have an Eye-Fi card set up to import photos taken with my Canon DSLR to my Photostream.  Other than the occasional image not being imported, which is discussed in other threads already, it seems to be working.  It allows me to view photos taken on my iPad almost immediately and I'm semi-happy with the set-up.  I'd be thrilled if not for the occasional missed photo glitch.
My workaround for the missed photo glitch is to occasionally plug my card into my iMac and check the card with iPhoto.  Anything not already imported is recognized and tehn imported, in other words it "catches up".  Not ideal, but it works.
It's been about 3 months since I've connected my iPhone of iPad to my Mac, but the last iOS update noted that they would need to be connected and wifi sync enabled for wireless syncing, which was what I had before.  This week-end was my first opportunity to do that.
When I did, iPhoto shows that I have about 1900 photos already imported, but about 2500 not imported!  That made no sense since I sync all my photos for my iOS devices through Photostream.  I started comparing photos and they all seem to be in iPhoto, obviously I've not compared all of them and not sure I'd ever have the time to do it.  Not in this lifetime anyway!  They seem to be duplicates in every way except file name.  Exif information is exactly the same, down to the second in both photos, but one is called IMG_7143.jpg, the other IMG_1124.jpg.  Not even close enough to each other to explain a slight similarity, but what could possibly be happening in this workflow that could be creating entirely new file names.  Isn't that created by the camera when the file/photo is created??
I apologize if this has been covered in another topic already but when I tried to do a search for information I just kept finding posts about how to change file names during import, changes, etc.  Nothing about this issue. I'm running latest versions of all software, OS X and iOS on all devices.
Thanks in advance for any information.
Sláinte

I downloaded 4300 photos from my iPad to a desktop folder using Image Capture.  Prior to download, iPad showing in iPhoto, it stated I had 1837 photos already imported, 2463 new photos for import.  After adding all the photos to the new folder iPhoto reported the same results when I selected the folder for import.  I was able to compare some of the photos that I could see "would be" duplicated if I were to run the import and, again, they are exactly the same (Exif) except for the file names.  For example, when I compared 5 photos from 2/23/14 that were the same they are IMG_0268 through 0272 in iPhoto.  In the image capture download folder they are IMG_3729 through 3733.  It seems to me the file names on the iPad are the original names since they are in line with the file numbering on the camera right now.
I'm sure this is a dumb question but I'm going to ask it anyway, could Photostream be renaming files??  It's the only thing that makes sense because the current workflow is take photo -> wifi transfer (Eye Fi) to iPad -> iPad sync with Photostream -> Photostream sync with iPhoto.  Due to the issue with incomplete Photostream syncs I always check to make sure everything on the card is synced with iPhoto before erasing, there's always a few but this always catches them.  The issue is that there are a bunch of photos on the iPad that were taken with the DSLR camera and have already been synced to iPhoto but now have a different name and appear to iPhoto to be new and unique.
Frustrating!!

  • My edited photos are being changed back to the original

    I have edited hundreds of photos in lightroom. I have just gone back in to edit some more and as I am watching, one by one, the photos are being reverted back to the originals. Even the star ratings have been taken away. Why is this happening?

    Exactly what steps are your following that produces this result? What did you do that you say "I have just gone back in to edit some more"? Lots and lots of detail needed here, using Lightroom words and names and not your own wording.

  • Photo time was changed -- due to .Mac?

    I have about 100 photos in iPhoto & a Web Gallery (on .Mac/MobileMe) where the date/time has changed by almost 11 hours. The original pictures time is still right when I "show Photo info", but when I try to change the time to the original time, it only shows the current incorrect time.
    Does anyone know software that will force the right time to the original time on the "show Photo info" page in batch? Also, anyone else experienced the same problem? I believe the problem may have been caused by .Mac since my photos are replicated 5 or 6 times on the Web Gallery.
    Thanks!
    Mike

    Mike:
    If, as you say, the time is correct on the photos in iPhoto, delete the gallery and republish. Before you delete it, however, make sure you have an album with the same photos in it so you can create a new gallery easily.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
    Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Photos Being Changed in External Application: Dropbox?

    I was having an issue where each time I would modify a photo, LR would change the Capture Date to the Modified Date. Upon a quick search, I believe the correct way to stop this from happening is for me to uncheck the auto write to XMP which I did. After correcting the myriad of inadvertent date changes, I selected all the photos I was working with and attempted to save the metadata only to get this warning/question: "One or more of these photos has been changed in an external application. Should Lightroom overwrite the settings on disk?" I searched this and I'm confused because I'm not editing the photos in an external application; the only external app that is even remotely touching these photos is Dropbox, which is where my LR catalog is stored. Does Dropbox have something to do with this message or am I missing something? To overwrite or not to overwrite is the question now, I guess, but I'd like to figure out why this question is being posed so I can fix it from the start.

    If I didn't think my humor and irony would be misinterpreted as being rude, I might say "Why are you such a troublemaker, by asking this question? Don't you know from reading the forum, that there are multiple opinions about how LR works with changes done outside itself?" Ooops, I actually said it.<G>
    But, seriously, I've had many of the same questions, so I've been following the various threads, and still haven't got a clear and relatively simple answer to "how to work with LR images and catalogs using outside applications, and not mess stuff up?"
    So, again, seriously, thanks for asking. Hoping, like you, to get clearer understanding.

  • My iphone photos do not show in my photostream

    hi, in the last few days, when I've taken photos with my iPhone (4S), they show in my camera roll but no longer appear in my photostream, so they are not shared to my iPad or Macbook Pro.  My phone is uptodate and running iOS 6.0.1.  I've not changed any settings anywhere.
    Any advice? Thanks much in advance!
    Michele

    I have also  found something. Try this post:
    Try disabling photo stream on your device (settings > iCloud), restarting your device and then re-enabling photo stream.
    If this doesn't help you may need to reset photo stream. You can do this at icloud.com by clicking on your name in the top right corner and then the advanced settings in the pop-up dialogue box that appears.
    Note: disabling photostream and re-enabling it will result in any photos that are currently in the photostream album on your device, that are older than 30 days old, not being added back.

  • IOS devices don't put shared photos from Camera Roll onto My Photostream

    I have photostream setup and working pretty well. I have 2 iPhones and 2 iPads syching all their photos between them and sharing with others. My phortos are also being automatically saved on my mac mini using My Photostream.
    The problem is when I want to add photos someone esle has shared on a photo stream into My Photostream. I save the photo I want into the Camera Roll of the device. This bit works fine but for somereason the photo isn't then put into My Photostream. It's very strange because if I put images into my Camera Roll through other methods (such as from an email or a screen capture and of course by taking a photo) the image gets into My Photostream. It's just images I imput from shared photostream that don't.
    This is really frustrating because I want to easily have other people's photos that I want in my personal colleciton included in the backup on the mac mini. It's particularly nice how all my photos appear grouped by month in Events in iPhoto.
    Is anyone else having this problem? Any advice on how to fix it? It's occuring with all my iOS devices so it looks like it might be a bug.

    I'd rather not. Besides the hassle of the extra synch process, they'll come in as separate import events mixed in wih all my other photos and not be in the month by month photostream archive I mentioned.

  • HT201077 As of recently any photos I add to a shared photostream will not update for others. Only I can see them. How come others sharing this photo stream are not getting the new photos?

    As of recently any photos I add to a shared photostream will not update for others and I don't see the updated photos on my other devices. Only I can see them from the device that i've posted from. How come others sharing this photostream are no longer getting the new photos? My iphone (the device i'm adding from) shows 20 pictures in this shared photostream and yet 4 other people that I share this photostream album with and my ipad only show 12 photos. For the past week I keep adding photos thinking people will see them but it just won't update the new ones. Any ideas how to fix this?

    You can stop new photos being automatically added to Photostream in iPhoto from iPhoto preferences > Photostream.

  • OH! ...look, my filenames were changed... does it matter?

    Heres something odd i have just noticed...
    using dos the contents of my directories "used" to look like this:
    c:\jEdu\JHTP\chptr3>dir
    Ex3_1 (.java file)
    Ex3_1 (.class file)
    Ex3_2
    Ex3_2
    Ex3_3
    Ex3_3
    Ex3_4
    Ex3_4
    then using explorer i rearranged my dir names & copied my workinto my
    new directory structure...and my filenames were changed...
    c:\jEdu\JHTP\exerc\chptr3>dir
    Ex3_1~1 java
    Ex3_1~1 class
    Ex3_2~1
    Ex3_2~1
    Ex3_3~1
    Ex3_3~1
    Ex3_4~1
    Ex3_4~1
    i know that the ~ means that the filename was too long...
    but as you can see i have short filenames, i deliberately picked short filenames based on chapter & exercise numbers to explicitly avoid this problem... so what has happened that my filenames in dos have ~ added to them? In explorer they do not show the ~, they show the old names like
    Ex3_2 java file (forte)
    ...i dont know.. does it matter?
    have re-installed jdk & still havin trouble executing applets...
    ...trying to work out the bug, lets not go over whats wrong with the applet code... did that stuff all last week.

    What you're seeing is normal. My 98SE uses a "~" in all .java and .class names (even short ones) when viewing the names in DOS. This is due to the truncation of .java to .jav and .class to .cla.
    Examples:
    Long File Name ==> DOS File Name
    AnyLongName.java ==> ANYLON~1.JAV
    OtherLongName.class ==> OTHERL~1.CLA
    Button.java ==> BUTTON~1.JAV
    Actor.class ==> ACTOR~1>CLA
    ABC.java ==> ABC~1.JAV
    A.java ==> A~1.JAV

  • Photo "...changed in external application" when saving metadata in LR2

    I am getting occasional error dialogs saying that one or more photos have been changed in an external application when saving metadata. I'm quite certain the photos have not been touched since the catalog was built--two days ago.
    I built an entirely new catalog after installing LR2. I changed some keywords as I not all images were keyworded in the same way. When I save metadata, either for an entire folder or for all files, I get occasional error dialogs about the image being changed externally. I'm quite certain that I changed nothing.
    Running Win XP Pro SP2 + all updates except SP3, LR2, on Xeon 3070 with 3GGB RAM and lots of hard drive space.

  • Shared photo streams when changing devices

    My daughter and I are swapping iPhone 5's (black & white).  I am curious what will happen to my photo streams and shared photo streams?  I am backing up via iCloud.  Will they be on our new devices after we restore or will we lose all of them.  Would the contents of the restore be any different if I backup/restore with iTunes?

    Welcome to the Apple Community bgl.
    Photos in photo stream...
    You can log into your iCloud account and enable photo stream to see your photo stream photos.
    Photostream in the cloud only keeps photos from the last 30 days (subject to a 1,000 photo limit). When photostream syncs the photos to your device they will stay there (subject to a 1,000 photo limit) until deleted, which means you may well have more photos in your photostream album on your device than there are in photostream in the cloud.
    The consequence of this is that if you turn photostream off and on again on your device (or enable it for the first time), it will only be populated with photos from the last 30 days, which may not be all the photos that were previously in the photostream album on that device.
    Photos in the camera roll...
    If you kept a back up of your device you can use it to restore to a replacement device, this will restore all of the photos in your camera roll and isn't time limited.
    Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

  • I have an an iPad3. Starting yesterday, when I try to attach a photo from my existing camera roll every photo is being rotated sideways. Is anyone else having this problem?

    Is anyone else having this problem? I usually attach photos from my existing camera roll when sending ecards, suddenly starting yesterday, all my photos are being rotated and coming up sideways! I use Blue Mountain.com for my ecards. I called their tech support line, they accessed my account and say they can do it no problem. It is my iPads problem!?? Any help out there. Please no tech speak; basic English only I am a newbie. Thanks for any help provided.

    I had major issues with the iPhone 4s battery, however it’s resolved.
    The tech who set the phone up at the Apple store did so with little training.
    if you have a mobile me account. First go and move all your data to the cloud by going on your computer and logging in at me.com/move. The cloud has replaced mobile me, so there is no need for those two accounts
    Also make sure that for any of your email accounts you set them up to fetch, not push. My tech person set them all to have the email servers push data to the phone. The new iphone4s antenna is extremely strong so it will continually try to access stuff that is pushed–***** a lot of battery life doing this. It makes it worse if you have exchange 2010 accounts. Something about changes made to exchange really suck battery life from devices that access such accounts.
    turning of locator and the push notifications from facebook--they have a lot!

  • Feature request: iPad photo filename retention

    Hello all,
    I'm looking to request a feature for iPad photos, but don't know where to post them.
    What I'd like is for the iPad2 to be able to retain the original filename assigned to the
    photo by my camera.  This would be extremely handy as a photographer, when showing
    photos to clients.  They pick the images they want based on filenames.
    Right now any app I've tried reassigns a new file name to each photo, which becomes
    a huge PITA when trying to find them on my iMac afterwards.
    Thanks for your time!

    There's is a 3rd-party app called Photo Shack Pro that will show and allow you to modify filenames.  It sorts by filename too if you want.  The problem is that iTunes doesn't actually transfer the filename as it appears on your computer when you sync to your iPad.  Instead, the iPad iOS assigns its own surrogate filename to the photo, which has no correlation to the host filename.
    To get around this issue, you need to use a photo metadata utility like EXIFTool to insert your photos' filenames into your photos' metadata.  Then Photo Shack Pro can be told to use this as the photos' filenames.
    Works pretty good.  I am able to transfer all of my Photos Library photos and their albums into Photo Shack Pro, along with their original filenames.  Organize, title, comment, star rate, etc. them how I want.  Then transfer them back to my PC using iTunes File Sharing.  All my changes are permanently stored in the photos' metadata.
