Photo Files Losing Color when placing in INDD...

Hi, using INDD CS6,I am noticing my jpg files are losing some of their color information when I link them into INDD, I am doing a photo book, and the colors really need to be preserved. It's almost like they are being compressed a little in INDD similar to what we see on compressed PDF output.  I have check my color spaces, etc, all seem to be good and consistent between the apps. I am attaching a screen shot where I overlaid the same jpg displayed in preview next to the same file linked to in INDD.
Thank you.

A few things at play here, I think.  First, do you see the the little red dot with the question mark in the upper left of the frame in ID? That means the link is missing. ID can't do a proper preview if it can't find the link.  Second, ID is color managed. As far as I know, Preview is not. A more accurate check would be against the image in Photoshop.  Third, you've got a drop shadow. I suspect the Image is RGB and the transparency blend space is set to CMYK.  Fourth, you are, indeed, looking at a compressed preview, not the actual pixels. The quality of the preview depends on the settings (display quality) and the size/resolution ratio at which the image was saved.

  • Losing color when uploading to lab

I have been using aperture for a 1 year. I just recently noticed that when I upload my photo to a pro lab my photo loses the color adjustments in my photos. It picks up some of the adjustment made in color efx, but vibrancy etc is lost. I have check my ICC profiles and what my export setting. Does anyone have a reason for this?

Let me ask this another way - how did you make the file you are selecting to upload within Aperture ?
Where did the file come from? Did you export it from Aperture? What export setting did you use?
first of all, thanks again for your reply and time.
    * Canon 40D, images are take in RAW format (very large files)
    * i then do any post processing that is necessary
    * Costco does not accept RAW files
I export the file from aperture 2 folder ( i do not use any other software for photography)
My next experiment is to create a CD/DVD of the images I wish to print - omit the online process, go to the lab and use their computer to upload the files.
RB, i just don't understand they I am losing quality in the prints.
As i shared earlier, the lab is aware that there is a problem (has been a problem) with Aperture 2 and print quality. I am just hoping that there is a solution. In the past, the Costco printing lab has been really good and cost effective.
    thank again

  • In elements 6, certain edited files lose color when transfered to Photomail or Online Gallery. Why is this happening?

Using Elements 6- when editing files in certain applications such as Portrait Proffesional, the edited versions lose their color when transfered to Photomail or Online Gallery. Also, when I use elements 6 e- mail attatchment to e-mail a single file, I get a message that says too much has been taken up. Anyone have any suggestions?

Well here's my workflow. I'm using Firewire external HD for storing Aperture library.
    1. Creating Folder with client's name
    2. Creating New project with shooting name in the clients folder.
    3. importing all RAW files into project. During that process i'm adding all keywords, time adjustment, credits etc....
    4. sorting photos, adding ratings (1 - for delete, 4 and 5 - to keep).
    5. making smart albums (according to ratings). Deleting all 1 star files.
    6. Editing all 5 stars (the one i'll give to the clients). If i'll need to edit it with photoshop, i'll use open in external editor. And keep the final psd file also in the Aperture library.
    7. Adding "final version" keyword to all files ready to be send to the client.
    8. Making a new smart folder (sorting by "final" keyword)
    9. Using internal web publishing - i'm publish them on my .Mac account. Sending the link to the client
    10. Using presets exporting tiffs and jpg versions and burning them on DVD for my client.
    11. Also - i'll print them using Aperture.
    12. Backing up the project - both on DVD and Aperture Vault (using external HD).
    13. I'm also backing up Aperture library using TimeMachine (using 3rd external drive).

  • Cut out a photo in Photoshop, and when placing into Illustrator and InDesign it changes it.

We have photos that another employee cut out in photoshop, saved as a TIFF and tried to place into Illustrator. When he went to place it, the photo looks like it created a clipping mask but the image is flat.
this is what the tiff looks like in preview and photoshop.
and this is how it shows up when placed in Illustrator. It does the same thing in indesign.
I also tried saving it as a pdf and opening it in Acrobat, and it turns into the butterfly there as well. Does anyone have any clue as to what the problem would be?

    Solution found:
The problem originated in photoshop. In the Paths panel, somehow a path of the butterfly was created(still haven't figured out how) and we deleted the path and the problem was fixed.

  • Photo not correct color when opened on one machine.

Photos are viewed correctly when I open them in MS Photo Editor. However, when I open them with Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 on my main computer (Windows XP)on my network, any photo that I open is much darker than the photo actually is.
If opened on any other network computer, the photo appears the same in Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 as it does in MS Photo Editor. It has not always been this way but has recently started doing this.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program and there is no change. How can I get the photo to display correctly on my main computer so that I can use all the wonderful tools that are in Photoshop 4.0? Right now I have to go to one of the other computers to do any work on them.
    Any help would be appreciated.

In your color settings for PSE select 'Always optimize colors for computer screen', this will display your image in sRGB color space.
If this does not make any difference then maybe your image does not have a good color profile associated with it. Since PSE reads embedded color profile for image unlike a few other editors, set the color setting of the PSE to 'No Color Management'.
You can also try experimenting with different color profiles under Image -> Convert Color Profile, and see if it helps.

  • Cannot upload my photos to a selling site. They are in my photo file, but disappear when going to upload. Help!

Hello: I have been posting my work to Etsy for a long time. All of a sudden, the pictures are not available when I try to upload them Etsy. When I look in the photo file, they are there. Nothing has changed in my photographing or posting procedure. Help!
    Thank you

Sorry, I will try to clarify. I use iphoto. I did not upgrade. Usually I take the photos, download them into my computer, edit them. I use the iphoto edit. Then I go to etsy to post them. It usually is very simple. You click on the prompt, it takes you to your iphoto files. I just type in the number of the jpg, and it shows me the picture I am looking for. I click on it and it uploads to Etsy. That is how it used to work. Now, I do all of the song and dance, but when I click on  the "upload your image" prompt, it shows me pictures, but the ones I want (the newest jpgs) are not there. If I exit Etsy and go to the files the pictures are there. By the way, there are other people having the same problem but nobody has posted a solution.....????
    Thank you for trying.

  • Photos look different (bad) when placed in InDesign CS4

I'm having a problem in that my photos look bad when viewed in InDesign. I labor on my photos until they're looking perfect in Photoshop -- with just the right color balance and tonalities -- but when I place them in ID, they look much darker and redder, or oversaturated. Then I look at them again in Photoshop, and they look fine. What gives? Which program is showing the real state of the photo? Btw, the photos are using the same color profile in both programs and the monitor is unchanged b/w viewings.
I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and what I can do about this? It makes me very nervous to see my photos looking so bad in InDesign, where I prepare my layouts for offset printing. Will they print as I see them in Photoshop or will they print as I see them in InDesign (which would be dreadful)? At this point I'm hesitant to make further adjustments and hoping it's the Photoshop view that's correct.
But why is this happening in the first place? Is there some setting I should be fixing? Or is there a color issue or incompatiblity b/w Photoshop and InDesign that I'm unaware of?
I'm using ID and Photoshop CS4 on Mac OSX 10.4.11
Hope someone out there can help me with this issue.
    Thanks in advance!
    Scarlett

There's a discrepancy in the way Photoshop and ID display images on the screen. I wasn't aware of this before.
If your display performance is set at High Quality there's no significant difference in the way color is displayed between PS and ID. The screen capture linked below shows a CMYK file with no profile assigned, side by side in ID and PS. The ID file has no profile assigned and the CMYK Working Spaces are the same for both programs:
    http://www.zenodesign.com/scripts/IDPS.png
You can check the RGB values of the screen capture in Photoshop and there is virtually no difference—I could only find an occasional 1 gray level in 1 channel shift.
If you are seeing a color change with a High Quality display setting then chances are you have a color management issue.
Syncing your Color Settings doesn't guarantee matching color between the programs because you are just syncing the program's Working Spaces, and they don't necessarily color manage the documents (assigned profiles override the Working Space). If you are assigning profiles in PS, the assigned profiles need to match your ID doc's assigned profile (which could be different then the ID Working Space)

  • Large H.264 files causing freeze when placed on Timeline

This is in reference to Encore CS5.1 that came in my CS5.5 production suite.
I have BD project that I am using x264 output files for.  I have three timelines.  One is 1 minute long (some credits), another is about 5.5 minutes long and the main timeline is about 94 minutes long.  I use the same settings for all three .264 files.  When I open and import the files into Encore it takes notable time to index the files, but does read them all in.  I can play each .264 file in the preview window above the asset tray.  I have timelines working and playing for the 1 minute piece and also the 5.5 minute piece.  When I create a timeline for the long piece, I place my AC3 file on it, no problem.  When I try to place the large .264 asset into it, I get a cycle of CPU and RAM usage that seems to run about 20-30 seconds with one thread of the CPU very active and the RAM usage climbs about 1.5GB.  So, I am not sure how to finish this project up.  I have been at it for a few days trying to get this to place into a timeline.
    Details:
Machine : Win7 with all updates, i& 3960X Hexacore (12-thread capable), 64GB RAM, Video workspace drive 8TB RAID10 G-Speed esPro via ATTO R680 miniSAS raid controller.  Matrox MX02 LE external via PCIe card (not really used in this contect) Machine is dedicated to video/audio work.  Primarily have Adobe CS5.5 Creative - Production Premium on it.  I also have TMPGENc Video Mastering Works 5.
File details:  Using THMGENc VMW5, I have access to CUDA supported encoding as VBR 1-pass, or they implement the x264 engine with BluRay certified wrapper settings.  I have tried using VBR 1-pass output via CUDA encode, x264 output set as 2-pass VBR and also CBR.   The encode rate is set to 23000 with a max at 29500 for the VBR modes.  The files are coming about about 16.5GB-17GB.   The GOP is set to 30, and I have tried both open and closed GOP.   The material is 1080i 29.97fps NTSC.
I could try the Mainconcept based AME compression, but I have never wanted to wait THAT long.  The x264 runs about 4 hours on my machine, and the CUDA based compression runs about 30 minutes (faster than my Matrox MXO2 !!).
I have used this same setup (both VBR 1-pass with CUDA and also VBR 2-pass with x264) on numerous projects, but they all seem to be no larger than about 30 minutes per piece.
This long piece is a graduation ceremony and there really isn't a very good place to cut the timeline into sections.  I would prefer to figure out what the problem is and fix it rather than dance around it.
Is this a known issue with Encore CS5.1?  Is there any workaround or changes I can make to get this done in one piece?   Or should I just give in and make it multiple 30 minute pieces?

I found a work around that I am surprised worked.  In place of my normally used pre-encoded H.264 file, I imported the 850GB 10-bit AVI file and used that on the timeline with the pre-encoded AC3 file.  It was much snappier and I was able to place proper chapter marks as such.  When I was ready to build the output folder, I selected the AVI asset and right clicked to "Locate Transcoded File".  I selected my original 2-pass VBR x264 derived file that I had been trying to import and use.  Encore went off and looked the .264 file over and came back as happy.  So, I built the output folder and it did not attempt to transcode anything and the resulting BluRay works just fine on my standalone player.
I really think this is not a "solution", but rather a work around.  What seemed to be happening in the process viewer was Encore (obviously a 32-bit application) was settled with a memory charge at about 1GB.  As it was doing it's thing, about every 20-seconds, for about 20-seconds, the memory charge would climb from 1GB up to about 3.1GB or 3.2GB and then the NT Kernel would pop up as active and then the memory charge for Encore would be back to 1GB again and no CPU activity for a 20-second cycle.  It would just keep doing this.  I watched this happen for a few hours before killing it.  The CPU loading each time it was active was a full 1-threads worth.  So, perhaps there is something in my Win7 x64 environment causing a problem, but I have tons of RAM and hard drive space and my processor is no slouch.
Just why Encore was happier with the massive uncompressed file than the compressed on is beyond me.  I mean, placing 850GB on the timeline took just a handful of seconds.

  • My PSD file is larger when placed in InDesign both documents are the same dimensions.

My 300dpi PSD file and InDesign CC file are the same dimensions (14.625 x 11)...
I have drawn guides in both files in the same place but when I place the PSD file the image appears larger and the guides do not align even though InDesign indicates that the PSD file is placed at 100%.

Did you double check that both the holding frame and the image are at 100%? It's possible to have a scaled frame with the image at 100% like this:

  • Photo aspect ratio incorrect when "placing" into Muse

    Hello all,
I'm attempting to place an image into an Adobe Muse page I'm building but when I go to File > Place, select my image and click where I want it on the page, the image places at a ratio much smaller than what I originally exported as.  When I stretch it to the original aspect ratio I exported it as, Muse tells me I need to resample it because I've stretched it larger than the original.  What am I doing wrong?!
    1. I export my image from Photoshop using the "Save for Web" and export the jpeg at my desired ratio: 670 x 290.
    2. I go to File > Place in Adobe Muse and click on the page but the image places at 335 x 145?
You'll notice the wireframe box on the page.  That's the size I want the picture to be and when I select the wireframe box, Muse says it's 670 x 290.  That's how I originally figured out what ratio I wanted to use for my image.
This seems to happen with any image I "place" into Muse.  Thanks in advance for any help you all can offer!

When you create a new site, you can choose the HiDPI option for high resolution output. This causes, that all images are placed in half of their size in order to obtain an adequate resolution on high res monitors. If you scale these images to their original size, they don't meet the requirements of HiDPI any more and you get the upsample warning. You can control this behaviour in "site properties". Just look here:
Adobe Muse Help | Creating High Resolution websites
Edit: A look at your screenshots confirms, that you have switched on the HiDPI option: Behind the assets you can see the label "2x".

  • Vector file turning transparent when placing into ps

    Hi,
am hoping someone can help me. I have a vector image that I am trying to place into a PS document. For some reason as soon as I click to accept the placement, the vector image becomes transparent.
It is only happening (thankfully) with this particular file so I am assuming it must be some setting in Illustrator that I am not aware of. I purchased the file from a stock image site. (sadly I am not clever enough to create my own lol).
    Any ideas?

    hi Manish
thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately, I can't share the file. it would be against the TOS of the stock photo site from where I purchased it.
The only way I can prevent other layers from showing through this particular file is by duplicating it. So I'm guessing that the opacity is somehow being reduced. But no idea why, and when I click on the layer it says it is at full opacity, and normal blending. The ppacity remains at full when in Illustrator, so if I put another image behind this particular file then there is no problem. It is only when moving this file into PS that it becomes see through.
Adding a couple of preview screenshots so you can see what I mean.

  • Illustrator file losing quality when opened in photoshop...please help!

Hello, If anyone could help me I would be so grateful, i really am struggling to the point of tears here!!
I have simple line drawings in illustrator (outlines of clothes) that I wish to open in photoshop to add colour and effects to.
When i have tried to copy and paste (as normal paste, smart object, pixels, path and shape layer) the quality is lost.
I have also tried to open or place the file in photoshop as a .psd, .ai , .pfd and still the quality is lost.
I have saved with different resolution settings too, but it always loses quality when it is opened in photoshop.
Is there any way for me to have a clear line drawing like it is in illustrator in photoshop? And how should I go about it?
Thank You so much to anyone who can help, I really am at my wits end with this!

Come on, Chris, I'm not buttoned up the back.
You told me last month when I complained about the poor quality of "paste as pixels" that Photoshop uses the raster in the clipboard so the raster must be poor and not Photoshop's rasterizing of vectors.
Re: Ps CS6 Problem: Incorrect rendering of pasted Adobe Illustrator vector objects
Now you say that Photoshop does not use the raster in the clipboard and does rasterize the vectors when "paste as pixels" is performed.
You can't have it both ways.
You've just confirmed what I said last month: Photoshop rasterizes the vectors even when pixels are present in the clipboard and "paste as pixels" is requested. Thank you.

  • Encoding video - keep getting error message when placing into indd?

    Hi,
I have some video which I need to drop into an article, and I can't work out why I keep getting an error: Cannot preview the media: not connected to the Internet or the file is not on the server.
It 'places' but nothing shows up in the frame or when uploaded or previewed in the ACV. The media panel brings up the same error when the panel is opened. The overlay panel recognises it as a video though.
Which has me perplexed. I'm sure I've done this before. I'm using Adobe Media Encoder and using H264/mp4 format. I've tried various presets (iPad, iPhone etc) to no avail. And I can't find any reference to this error anywhere so if nothing else a reply on here might help other in the future.
    Thanks in advance, as always,
    Simon.

Tried restarting workstation and InDesign, reinstall the DPS tools (can't uninstall since I'm using CS6, so not sure how to do this really) to no avail.
I've done this recently on the same project but not sure why it's not working now. Other details if relevant Win 7, CS Master collection.
Getting a bit worried why I can't get this to work for a presentation tomorrow.
    Simon.
EDIT: It looks like something to do with InDesign and not DPS necessarily. I get this message:
    when opening the document.
Could it be related to the fact I bought a Quicktime Pro licence and set that as the default program (Win 7) to open .mp4 files? There is only an MP4 file in the InDesign document, no .flv files.
