Photo Formatting

I do some photography on the side and I want to try a new printing company. In order to submit test prints they have to be a specific format. As for software all I use is iphoto, I am thinking about getting Lightroom vs Apeture.
Question #1: How do I change my photos through iphoto to size 8x10 at 300 PPI, in any embedded color space and saved as a baseline standard, level 10 JPEG.
Question #2: Can the above question even be done in iphoto, or does Apeture have that option? I know that lightroom has the capibilities to get to the format I need, or so I have been told.
Question #3: What do you recommend, Apeture or Lightroom? What is your favorite and why?
Thank you for your help.
Brandi

That spec pretty much assumes a Photoshop-based workflow - it doesn't need to but that's what it assumes.
iPhoto is not geared at the Pro shooter. It's aimed squarely at the consumer market - the folks with a point and shoot or a phone - it will do more, but that's what it's optimised for.

300 ppi is meaningless until you print. As you're printing at 10 x 8 then you'll need an image that's a minimum of 8x300 by 10x300. That's 2400 x 3000 pixels or 6.5 megapixels. iPhoto won't assign a colour space but you can do that in Preview. Baseline standard level 10 is a pure photoshop measurement. I'd guess that exporting at High Quality would get you close.
The export options on Aperture are much broader. You can download the Aperture manual here
http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/
and of course, ask on the Aperture forum for more. I'm reasonably sure it'll do it, though some of the terminology might be different.
Personally I use Aperture for two reasons: OS integration, which LR has none, and the User interface which is less confusing and modal, for me. YMMV

  • How do I create a photo in jpg or other photo format from a frame within iMovie11.  The suggestion I have found from earlier versions of iMovie does not create a jpg file that can be revealed in Finder. Help please.

How do I create a photo in jpg or other photo format from a frame in iMovie. The previous suggestions on here do not create a jpg file when you chose reveal in finder when using iMovie11 and OS X

First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. (google MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5)
    Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iMovie, select the clip you need. Then, right-click/Reveal in Finder.
Drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip
In MPEG Streamclip, move the playhead to the frame you want.
In MPEG Streamclip, click FILE/EXPORT FRAME.
Choose JPEG, TIFF, or PNG and give it a name.
You can then drag this photo into iPhoto.
Here is a video I made that steps through this...
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

How can I sort photos within an event? When I follow the Help instructions, I can sort manually in Photo format, but when I return to Event format, the original order is restored.

Events are organisation for those who can't really be bothered. They are automatic - based entirely on Date and Time the camera records the photos as taken.
You can move photos between Events, you can Merge Events, you can Rename them and sort them in various ways except one: You cannot manually sort in an Event as Events are all automated.
If you want to manually sort in an Event then you've outgrown Events as an organising tool. Now it's time to look at albums (Where you can manually sort) which are much more flexible than Events as an organising tool.

  • Adobe Tools - Best Photo Format for Web Content

    Hi,
We have recently redesigned our website at http://www.aljoufilaw.com/ar/ and inserted photos in the homepage and its sub-pages.
Our concern is that we want to have the photos in the best quality and with high resolution. What is the best photo format to achieve this? We had converted our photos in Photoshop to JPEG and PNG.
Does increasing the resolution in Photoshop by going to image>image size>resolution, helps the quality of the photo in the website?
We appreciate your expert advice and opinion on this.

No.  Resolution is a print concept which has no real meaning on the web.  What matters on the web is height & width in pixels (500 x 325).
Even if you save images at 300 dpi for print, they will be displayed in web browsers at 72 ppi (or slightly higher in HiDef displays).
Higher bandwidth (file size) just makes your images load very slowly with no significant gain in quality.
In Photoshop, use File | Save for Web  & use the 4-up tab to compare file size with image quality.  Rule of thumb on the web is to use optimized JPGs for photos and select the smallest file size you can get away with, then back off a tad.
    See screenshot from Photoshop.

  • Photo formats for export to Premiere Elements

What photo format , Jpeg, Tiff, etc should I use after editing it in Photoshop Elements to use it in a video in Premeire Elements 11?  I just used a photograph formated in Jpeg 5 and used it in a video I made with Premeire Elements and it isn't as sharp as the original.  Do I need to change the photo format?

The photo format won't make much difference. But you should rez down your photo's resolution to more like 2000x1500.
But also remember that video is video resolution. It's never going to look as clear or as detailed as a photo.
This article gives you more details.

I have upgraded Mac to the new i-Photo format.  When I try to associate a picture to a contact on iCloud Contacts the new format is not accepted.  How can I now use these pictures with the contact list?

If you use iTunes now, you may well end up with duplicates. However if there is no other way, duplicates can be deleted, and this may be your only option.
What exactly is the state of play, are contacts on your iPod in your contacts at iCloud.com

  • How can i create a photobook with a layout that respect standard photo format?

I used iphoto to create a photobook but there is serious problem, i can use only fixed layout and this layouts are problems.
I can't put my shoot in standard photographic format, so i need to zoom and move my photo to fit well in your fixed layout.
I can't change the composition of all my shoots to fit in wrong layout.
There is a way to disable layout and put manually the photo in original format on pages?
    Thank you
    Mario Aprea

iPhoto books can only be created using the fixed templetes supplied - you can not modify them
I have no idea what a "standard Photographic Format is" - neither I nor Google knows that that is
So I do not understand what you want to do
One possible suggestion is that in a book you can right click on a photo (in most temes) and use the fit to frame option to show an entire photo that is in the wrong dimensions

  • Best practice for photo format: RAW+PSD+JPEG?

What is the best practice in maintaining format of files while editing?
I shoot in RAW and import into PS CS5. After editing, it allows me to save as various formats, including PSD and JPEG. PS says that if you want to re-edit the file, you should save as PSD as all the layers are maintained as-is. Hence I'd prefer to save as .PSD. However, in most cases, the end objective is to share the image with others and JPEG is the most suitable format. Does this mean, that for each image, its important to save it in 3 formats viz RAW, PSD and JPEG? Wont this increase the total space occupied tremendously? Is this how most professionals do it? Pls advice.

Thanks everyone for this continued discussion in my absence over two weeks. Going through it i realize its helpful stuff. During this period, i downloaded Aperture trial and have learnt it (there's actually not much learning, its so incredibly intuitive and simple, but incredibly powerful. Since I used iphoto in the past, it just makes it easier.
I have also started editing my pics to put them up on my photo site. And over past 10 days, here is the workflow I have developed.
-Download RAW files onto my laptop using Canon s/w into a folder where i categorize and maintain all my images
-Import them into Aperture, but letting the photos reside in the folder structure i defined (rather than have Aperture use its own structure)
-Complete editing of all required images in Aperture (and this takes care of 80-90% of my pics)
-From within Aperture open in PS CS5 those images that require editing that cannot be done in Aperture
-Edit in CS5 and do 'Save', this brings them back to Aperture
-Now I have two versions of these images in Aperture - the original RAW and the new .PSD
-Select the images that I need to put up on my site and export them to a new folder from where i upload them
I would be keen to know if someone else follows a more efficient or robust workflow than this, would be happy to incorporate it.
There are still a couple questions I have:
1 - Related to PS CS5: Why do files opened in CS5 jump up in terms of their file size. Any RAW  or JPEG file originally btn 2-10 MB shows up as minimum 27 MB in CS. The moment you do some edits and/or add layers, it reaches 50-150MB. This is ridiculous. I am sure I am doing something wrong.  Or is this how CS5 works with everyone.
2 - After editing a file in CS by launching it from Aperture, I now end up with two versions in Aperture, the original file and the new .PSD file (which is usually 100MB+). I tried exporting the .PSD file to a folder to upload it on my site, and wasnt sure what format and size it would end up with. I got it as a JPEG file within reasonable filesize limits. Is this how Aperture works? Does Aperture allow you options of which format you want to save the file in?

  • Photo format question

Newbie question: when designing an ID document (let's say ID CS4, since that's what I'm using), is there any difference in placing a Photshop image (.ps) versus a .TIF file? I've done both. And is there any harm in using high-res .JPG's? I have a friend who works in Quark and he always changes every photo to .TIF before placing. Thanks.

Resizing is a different issue altogether from format.
It's safe to scale the image in ID regardless of the format. If you look in the info panel with the image selected you'll see two resolution numbers listed, actual and effective. Actual is just the resolution at the dimensions the image was saved and is essentially irrelevant. Effective resolution is what you have at the dimensions you are currently using, and that's the number that counts. If that number is in the range that is acceptable for the type of output you are using, there is no need to resize the image in Photoshop at all.
If you MUST resize the image, then yes, convert to something besides jpeg if that's what it is to start. And keep in mind that up-sampling won't improve image quality in general, and downsampling more than 20% or so can cause you to lose fine details (but so will scaling down).

  • Photo format handling different after upgrade

Learned by accident. I shoot RAW only and the Photo app used the embedded jpeg to email, embedded, prior to 4.2.1. Today I shot a few to share with a friend, RAW only-first time sine upgrade I guess. She couldn't open them. I assumed they were jpegs as always before. I tried again but now in the email that pops up I get only the application icons. So I saw the icon for photo.RW2. Huh?!??!?!?
I took a few and sent to myself. The RAW + jpegs shot sends a jpeg attachment and when received it opens that as embedded and my file was 4.4MB. The RAW file was 14.4MB, sent the photo.RW.2 attachment icon and when received and the attachment touched an "open with" appears with 3 choices, Filterstorm, Goodreader and Evernote. Just strange. I'm not sure what the Photo app is sending. None of those apps ca process a RAW file so have to assume it's a large jpeg.
I'd love to have some insight. Obviously things have changed. Maybe all it means, at least for me if I want to send a quickie photo email without any processing, is to simply shoot RAW + jpeg since I retain my memory cards anyhow to upload directly to my main computer for processing in Photoshop and zlightroom. Still, it seems odd to make this change and I can find nothing about it. My question is why?

Here are the results of the queries. So is it safe to say that it is not the database that is changing the format? Or is there somewhere else to check. The format that the database is showing below is the format I want displayed.

  • Apple TV photo format and syncing

I just got an apple TV and had it working for a day. Now when I add more photos I get a blank screen when I select my photos in the menu. The funny thing is that my photo are definitely on the apple TV unit as it will start rolling through the images in its screen saver mode when the unit is left alone for a few minutes. Also, my music will no longer play and I have also lost all the other functions. My file format is Adobe PNG files selected straight from my desk top. It was actually working at first???

Make sure the content is suitable for the Apple TV, the first generation model cannot play 1080p HD.
If your problem persists, remove all the cables for 30 seconds and then try again.

  • Photo format correction... help needed

Hi I'm new to the forum so please forgive me if I in the wrong section. I'll explain my problem as best as I can. I have taken some photos of text books in a library, the photos aren't the best quality because I was in a hurry and the library rules forbid photos being taken so most of them are not straight, a bit blury or taken at the wrong angle (star wars film intro text style!!). I needed to convert these jpegs to doc format or PDF but since the texts shown in the photos are not perfectly straight or clear I was wondering if any one can give me some step by step instructions using photoshop CS6 as how to get the texts in the photos straight and clear enough to be able to convert them correctly to .doc or pdf formats.
thanks for any help at all
    J.

I should have explained myself better... most of the books in this library for some reason aren't for loan, you can't take them out of the library, they will do photocopies at an abnormal cost so someone who has to study for a uni degree and needs hundreds and hundreds of pages... would definitely never pay such an amount for photocopies... hence breaking the library rules. Most of the books in this library are of historical importance and can only be found in libraries that will charge you to the bone for photocopies.
That said, can anyone help me out with correcting the photos using photoshop CS6 so that I can convert them to doc or pdf files successfully?
    thanks

  • What and Where is the basic photo format and size info????

I am new at this but an experienced graphic designer.
I work in print often so I take high resolution images. Using still photos I want to make movies with titles and effects, music that are emailable and facebook friendly. Do I need to down size photos before importing them to IPhoto. My project will have around 30 photos.
Is there a place I can go to get this basic info, it was not covered on Apple tutorial.
Do you think any of the manuals that we have to purchase will discuss this issue? Gripe, why does mac give you a program without a manual!!!
So the question is, what is the recommended resolution and format for photos to import to Iphoto or Imovie and be able to have a good quality movie.

the Apple intended workflow is, that stills are managed in iPhoto, and iMovie 'picks up' from there.
this workflows guarantees to some extend a compatibility to iMovie.
iM will not accept 'raws' or CMYK.psd - jpeg, pic, tiff preferred.
there's a flaw, how iM handles portrait-sized pic.. if you want to show them full-sized (=black bars l/r), you have to add those in any pic-processor to make the pic landscape BEFORE import to iM09..
the maximum res of a video is 1920x1080 .. adding any higher res has no effect. only needed, as Kirk allready told you, if you like to use the Ken Burns effect.
for uploading to YT choose HD/1280x720 as size.. adds some extra grain of quality.. made a demo of some random pics as a test, what's possible with iM/YT.
mailing video...? I prefer to upload to YT, make it private, send invitation to mail adress.. for mailing, you would have to compress sooooo much.. nothing left.

  • Latest RAW photo format update breaks iPhoto?

    Hello,
I'm running the latest iPhoto (9.2.1) on Lion (10.7.2).   I bought iPhoto the other day so that I could enable Photo Stream from my iPhone.
After it installed via the App Store, Apple Update said there was a RAW file format update.  I didn't install it right away as I was importing the 6500+ files into iPhoto.
A majority of my files are in DNG format from when I imported the RAW files into Lightroom.  But iPhoto didn't seem to have any issues with this and imported happily.
Once the import was done, I could see all the thumbs of my photos without issue and the larger versions of the photos.
I installed the RAW file update, and now things are broken.  None of my thumbs show up.  iPhoto knows the files are there as it has a record of something being there, but no display.  When I double click on the thumb to see the full size, I get a  !  for the bigger picture.   Now here's the really odd thing... if I use the scroll wheel on my mouse and scroll super fast in the thumbs display, I can see thumbs scrolling by, i stop scrolling, they all disappear.  I've attached a screen shot of what it looks like.
I'm utterly confused on this and not sure how to proceed.  Is there a way to roll back the update?  Or should I blow away the library and reimport?
Any ideas would be greatly appricated
    Thanks

This has  nothing to do with the Raw update. (And, by the way, all these do is add support for new cameras. If you're not shooting with one of these specified cameras there's no need to update.)
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Changing photo format from "microsoft word doc" to jpeg or other supported photoshop format

    hi --
on my windows XP (home edition) i have many photos stored under "my documents." one is categorized as a "microsoft word document," despite the fact that it is a photo (this may be b/c i was very unskilled at the computer when i scanned this photo in and thus selected the wrong format? i'm still not "skilled" but i'm doing better!).
when i tried to import this photo into my photoshop album (starter edition 3.0), i got a message that says "format not supported" or something similar. how do i change the format of the photo so that it will be accepted into my photoshop album? i haven't had any trouble with photos in other formats (jpeg, etc.).
thanks very much for any assistance -- susie margaret

On my other computer I have a different photo software. Once I download the pictures from the card reader and left click on the photo I want, it simply gives me a choice to save it in the computer, under MY PICTURE or desktop etc. in jpg.
When I left click on the picture on the adobe photoshop 2.0 starter edition, it gives many choices such as : copy, turn, edit, but not saving.
How do I save it on the computer to add it to a real estate home sells website for pictures on the home advertisement or virtual tour. Also when the pictures were read off of the card reader it popped out all of the pictures 120 of them. I only need 3 of them saved. Please tell me step by step . Thank you.
