"Photo has Develop adjustments" when none made

Hello,
I am importing a JPG photo into Lightroom 5.4.
In the Import screen, in the "Apply During Import" section, both the "Develop Settings" and the "Metadata" fields are set to "None".
Yet, as the import process progresses, I see the correct thumbnail being changed as develop adjustments take place automatically (cropping and turning the colour image into black and white, at least that's all I notice). Why does this happen and how can I prevent it from happening?
I assume the instructions are embedded in the JPG file, which I created in Photoshop (and saved as both PSD and JPG), since it happens in two Lightroom installations, one on the Mac and one on Windows 7 (brand new installation). When I switch to the Develop module, the only step in history is the import.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks,
Gabor

Yet, as the import process progresses, I see the correct thumbnail being changed as develop adjustments take place automatically (cropping and turning the colour image into black and white, at least that's all I notice). Why does this happen and how can I prevent it from happening?
Initially, Lightroom is showing you the RAW file's embedded JPG preview, which has all in-camera adjustments applied.
When it changes, you get a completely unadjusted RAW photo, none of the in-camera adjustments are applied. It is then up to you to edit the photo to make it look the way you want.
There is no way to prevent this from happening in Lightroom.
If you really like the initial view, then you might want to shoot JPG instead of RAW; or alternatively learn to use Lightroom to produce photos that might have superior image quality to the JPG. You can, if you want, develop your own Lightroom presets that can be applied either globally or individually to enhance your photos.
I disagree that the initial view you see is "correct" (your word) as there are an infinite number of renderings of this image, it is not reasonable to say that one is "correct"; the JPG view is still edited in various ways by the in-camera algorithm, there is nothing sacred or correct about the in-camera algorithm.

  • Filter on "Photo has Develop adjustments" flag?

Is there any way to filter on the "Photo has Develop adjustments" flag? I can't find it, but the filtering capability seems a bit opaque to me so maybe I'm just missing it.

Mike, once you're in the smart collection, you can then filter further by using the filter bar in grid view (if it's missing, hit the '\' key). You can type the directory name in the text filter. If you have directories with similar names, I saw a post from Dirk Jan de Ridder that shows how to search for exact words:
    Try
+Fall+ (finds all photos containing the exact word 'fall')
+Fall (all photos starting with 'fall')
Fall+ (all photos ending with 'fall')

  • My photos looked great but when I made a book they all appeared to be corrupted in the pdf preview?

My photos looked great but when I made a book  in iphoto 09 they all appeared to be corrupted in the pdf preview? There is a white triangular shape with random  horizontal lines running through each photo in the ibook preview.  Took it to the Genius bar, after a week of fooling with it including wiping it clean and resinstalling the OS the same thing happens.

A LOT of them dont appear.
What do you see in the window when you click on those?  A blank, black window?  An exclamation mark?  What?

Hi, I had the same problem. I finally figured it out. Plug in the USB cord to your ipad, but beofre plugging it into your computer make sure your ipad is not in the locked or sleep mode. Once I did this, my photos showed up and started downloading. Hope that helps you!

  • How do you filter for photos with develop adjustments?

I wanted to put this information out there, because it was difficult for me to find an answer to the question of "how do you quickly filter for photos that have develop adjustments?"
Some earlier posts in this forum observe that a smart collection has the ability to filter files wherein "has adjustments" is "true." Yes, it can do that. And it can also add in a "date" parameter for more specific targeting. But it cannot simply say, "in the current folder," or "in the selected folder." And frankly, that's the exact situation when I need to filter down to the files I want: I'm in a folder—typically the current folder that I've just imported—and I've done a smattering of develop adjustments. Now, I want to quickly select just those images for export. Can't be done, not with a Smart Collection, anyway.
But Lightroom is nothing if not deep, and if you approach the problem from a filtering standpoint, it will eventually get you there—but the solution is very non-obvious. Expose the filter bar, with your favorite preset: camera info, default columns... it doesn't really matter. Hover over the header bar and to the far right will become visible the "add column" widget. Add a column. From the pop-up menu on the name will come a long list of options, the second-to-last of which is "develop preset." Once that's in place, click on "custom." Save your current settings as a new preset and give it a descriptive name like "adjusted images."
Now, when you're in your current—or any—folder, just click on "metadata" in the filter bar, and your custom preset will be in effect: any images that you've worked on will be selected. It's a fast, one-click selection.
If there's another way of doing this (keep in mind it's for the selected or current folder only), let me know. It's such a seemingly desirable action that I'm kind of astounded there's no built-in or easy or obvious way to do it... or that no photographer has requested it.

I am honored to have a response from Rikk "MVP" Flohr, and I do readily agree that your approach is one way to approach the issue. It puts the relevant images in a discrete area that is easy to access. However (this is where I look a gift horse in the mouth) I find "sorts" a bit underwhelming in comparison to "filtering." Two problems: first, the sort still does not 'clear your deck' of unwanted images. You still have to squint at the badges and carefully select the range at the top (or bottom). Mistakes can be made (and I would be the first to make them). Second, the sort command is "sticky," meaning that folder will always have that sort unless you undo it. In general, I think most photographers want to see a folder's images sorted by capture time, so they can easily glance to the beginning, middle, and end of the shoot. With my method, once you click out of the folder, the filter is taken away and you're back to normal.
I do understand that Lightroom wants me to flag my images with rankings or stars or colors or dancing beavers or what-have-you. But in this particular situation, that's an extra step. If I've applied development adjustments, it's already done. Why shouldn't I be able to choose "Select Developed Photos" from the Edit menu, right under "Select Flagged Photos"?

  • Lightroom 4-not retaining develop adjustments when I move to photoshop

I have used lightroom for years-never had this issue. I am using a Pc with WIndows 8. Recently had hard drive crash so only just reinstalled lightroom in last few weeks but all was working fine until last few days. First it just wouldn't open a file I wanted in Photoshop at all. Just got stuck/ignored request. When I closed program it would not reopen progam unless I rebooted computer. Now it will take any photo into photoshop when I click photo-edit in Photoshop 5.1 but it opens the version of the file with no develop adjustments at all! It will retain a crop if I make one but that is it! Don't recall changing anything that would cause this.
    Stephanie

That was it!  They were not in the same color space. I had to change my preferences in Lightroom under the External Editing tab and then on the "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS6" section to match the other photos color space, which as sRGB.  I had my preference on ProPhoto RGB.
So for those looking for the same answer, I will make it clear for you.
In lightroom click on "Edit" on the top left...
then click on "Preferences" (or hot key Ctrl + ,)
click on the "External Editing" tab......
then on the top of the panel you will see the "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS6" section.
Adjust the color space to the same color space of the other picture. (you can see that info in Photoshop on the top tab of the file).
The bit rate did not matter for me.  I was able to see the lightroom adjustments copied with both the 8bit and 16bit when the file I was copying to was only 8bit.  So you only need to change the color space.......most likely it will be sRGB.
    Thank you c.pfaffenbichler.

  • Find Photos with Development Adjustments

    Let's say I have 100 photos in my folder/collection/whatever.
But only 2 have any Development Adjustments applied - the other 98 are untouched.
Is there any way in Lightroom to perform a Find / Filter / something so that only the 2 modified photos are shown?

The reason I ask is that I'm importing JPGs. They, of course, end up in separate folders. Most of them are fine, but a few need tweaking.
This might happen over the course of a month.
So at the end of the month, I might have 15 directories - mostly original JPGs but a few edited.
In order to upload my pics to Snapfish, I have to "export" the modified JPGs to a new JPG, but only *copy* the unmodified.
If I forget to export the modified JPGs, when I upload I'll be copying the original JPG sans LR edits, hence my need for a quick and foolproof way of finding altered JPGs.

  • Photo has white edges when saved in Acrobat

I have a document in publisher 07 with a photo of a product in it made from Photoshop CS3 saved as a PNG24. No matter how close I zoom in Publisher everything looks fine.
When I create a pdf in acrobat using standard or high quality setting there shows white jagged edges aroung the photo. I have tried saving in a multitude of ways but cannot get those stupid jaggy edges to go away.
Is it Photoshop, Acrobat, Publisher??? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

I suspect it is a "feature" of publisher. That would be much like the white space added around the sides of a PPT when printing to the Adobe PDF printer (unless you click on print to fit) so that printer margins are observed (an assumption of PPT). In photos, a jagged edge might be desired for old-style photos and that is what you are seeing. I am guessing, but I would look for the feature in Publisher.

  • My I photo has been upset when running powerbook as slave to Mac mini

I am a novice at this stuff and appear to have dropped a clanger! I recently purchased a Mac Mini (secondhand) and wanted to back up my powerbook photos and music on to it. I connected using firewire and started the powerbook as slave. I tried to access the photo albums to copy them, but it all got very confusing. The upshot is that when I attempt to use my powerbook I photo , it comes up with the message:
You have made changes to your library using newer version of i-photo. Please quit and use the latest version of i-photo.
I attempted to download 5.0.4 which appears to be the version on the Mini but it goes right through the download process to the point where you choose the destination hard drive and then flags up the following message:
You cannot install i-photo 5.0.4 (or later versions that I have tried to download) on this volume. An eligible i-photo app was not found in the location/application/i-photo app.
Can anyone help me with this please? Thanks. Chris.

    1. If you want a copy of what's in your iPhoto Library folder, then copy the (entire) iPhoto Library folder -- it is, after all, your photo library database. Pieces of a database are largely useless unless you can stitch the pieces all back together. The answer is not to take it apart in the first place. If you only want selected elements, then export those elements to a folder.
    2. Do the two computers have the same version of iPhoto? A database created in one version will often not be compatible with an older version.
    3. If the original iPhoto Library folder is still around, discard the pieces that you copied.

  • All photos in portrait format are displayed blurred in the preview mode "fill" of the library. In all other modes e.g. "fit"or "1:2" the photos are sharp. How can I change this, so that the photos are still sharp when displaying them in the mode "fill"?

All photos in portrait format are displayed blurred in the preview mode "fill" of the library. In all other modes e.g. "fit"or "1:2" the photos are sharp. How can I change this, so that the photos are still sharp when displaying them in the mode "fill"? My Lightroom release is 5.7.1.
    Thanking you in anticipation!

I'd like to get all these '-1 suffix' files together with their associated Develop adjustments into one folder (if they aren't already) so I can see them in Grid view in the Library module, which I use as my basic starting point for everything else at this early stage of my Lightroom 'career'.
To see what folder these are stored in, right-click on a photo and select "Go to Folder in Library".
Advice: if you are going to use Lightroom effectively, you probably want to stop using folders as your method to create a grouping of photos that are already in Lightroom; there are plenty of built-in tools, such as keywords, collections, color labels, etc.
I don't understand why the search on the entire catalog picked up apparently the same two file versions but also got the Develop adjustments when going to the relevant Folder didn't show the adjustment black squares against each image in Grid view nor were they there when the images were opened in the Develop module.  Perhaps if I understood this, I'd be a bit more confident of moving forward myself.
These are most likely different versions of the same photo, in different folders. Lightroom stores the edits in its own catalog, and so it knows that one folder's photos have edits, and the other folder's photos do not have edits. Please understand that Lightroom is a database, it knows where the photos are at the time you import them (or add them to the catalog by synchronize), and then if you move things around in your operating system, Lightroom does not know anything about that and problems begin. Thus the advice to organize using Lightroom tools and methods and not operating system tools and methods.

  • When developing an image from a smart collection "has no adjustments" it gets immediately deselected

I am wondering if this could really be the intended LR behaviour?
I start from a smart collection, one of the criteria is "has no adjustments".
Ok, as soon as I move the first slider in develop module, it no longer matches that criterion.
But that should be no reason for LR to force me to immediately stop the develop edits on the selected image.
It immediately unselects, and I stay in Develop module with a grey window and the message "no image selected". (It does not move on to the next image, which still matches the criterion.)
I would expect that when I return to Library module, it would return to the same smart collection where I started, but I would not find my last developed images there, as they no longer match the criterion.
But that LR grabs it immediately out of my develop selection?
Strange enough it stays the same, when I first explicitely selected all images while in Library/smart collection.
My expectation would be that I  have this selection fixed to work on in Develop module. Similar to when I select any images from survey view and go to Develop module.
But no, the only workaround I found is:
Start from the smart collection, ctrl a to select all, then arbitrarily click on another collection withput this criterion - selection stays fixed - then move over to Develop module.
    This is LR4.1 on Win7.
Definitely my functional specification would be: never take off an image from Develop unless the user moves on to another image.
So ignore from where an image was picked.
Would you consider this a bug? Or a "feature"?
Do you see the same in LR4.2 or 4.3RC? Behaviour on a Mac?
    Cornelia

There is a feature request that has been around for a long time to be able to "lock" the contents of a smart collection so you can work on the photos in it, before "releasing" it for recomputed contents.
My workaround is to copy from smart collection to dumb (I encountered this so often that I created a 1-keystroke plugin mini-feature to help). Before that I actually used a private keyword whose presence was enough to hold a photo in a smart collection (set the keyword to work on photos, clear the keyword to release them). Then as long as you add that keyword as criteria to every smart collection you may edit in, and add the keyword to every photo in the collection that you may work on... - yuck.

  • My early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" non-glare display has developed a dark band at the edges of the screen approximately the same width as the aluminum surround. This wasn't present when the MBP was new. Am near an Apple Store, but anyone else had this problem

My early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" non-glare display has developed a dark band at the edges of the screen approximately the same width as the aluminum surround. This wasn't present when the MBP was new. I'm near an Apple Store and can take the laptop in, but has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks for your input. I didn't completely flesh out what I'm seeing visually. The resolution settings are all correct for my screen. The problem is if, say, looking at the gray startup screens or a completely white full-screen image, there is a perimeter of graying, almost as if the LEDs are somehow not as bright as the rest. It's also curious that the thickness of this phenomenon is almost exactly the same as the metal bezel around the display. I will be taking it to an Apple Store for a look, as I'm also having several minor hardware problems that need to be addressed and remedied.

  • When my husband and I got these iPhones . We had the same Apple ID .(not good) that has changed . We have a iCloud acct. how or what do I need to do to change on my setting under iCloud it has his Apple ID  and also on r PC it has only his info none of mi

When my husband and I got these iPhones . We had the same Apple ID .(not good) that has changed . We have a iCloud acct. how or what do I need to do to change on my setting under iCloud it has his Apple ID  and also on r PC it has only his info none of mi

To change the iCloud account on your phone you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone.  When you delete the account you will be given the option to either keep or delete the iCloud data from your phone.  This also, only deletes the account and the iCloud data from your phone, not from iCloud.  Your husband's phone won't be effected by this.  Then, to create a separate account, sign back in with a different Apple ID (you can continue to share the same ID for iTunes).
If you have any photo stream photos that you want to keep on the phone, save them to your camera roll before deleting the account.
If you're sharing the same ID for iMessage and FaceTime you'll end up getting each other's text messages and FaceTime calls.  To prevent this, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your new iCloud ID.  Then do the same thing in Settings>FaceTime.

  • How can I create a new catalog of all my photos with no develop adjustments?

I use Lightroom 4.3.  I tried this by deleting the old catalog, and creating a new one, thinking that the develop adjustments would no longer exist after first deleting the old catalog.  The develop adjustments were still there.  (I deleted the catalog out of the lightroom sub-folder of My Pictures.)
The reason that I want to do this is that I have one folder (of about 800 important photos) where something went very wrong in Lightroom, and every time I try to pull up one of the photos my whole computer stalls.  Everything works beautifully in my other folders.  I even re-installed Lightroom.  I want to re-add those dng photos without the develop adjustments.  It doesn't bother me if none of my files have develop adjustments.  I save all of my files after they are adjusted.  I save the DNGs also.
    Thanks,
    Jennifer

One easy way: reset after importing (which can be done from library module - e.g. main menu, context menu, quick-develop...). If you can't even get that far, consider using exiftool to strip the xmp from DNGs and/or jpegs, or just delete xmp sidecar file in case of proprietary raw.

  • Have faces on iPhone photos when none are checked to appear

Why do all faces in iPhoto appear on the iPhone?
In iTunes, the sync section of photos has selected albums, Events, etc checked with  No Events chosen.
None of the face entries in the section below of iTunes are checked. I would assume faces wouldn't appear if none are checked. No events appear.
This problem does not happen with my iPad which is checked in exactly the same way as iTunes for the iPhone.
THe problem continues ever since I got the iPhone 6 months ago. All software and OS are the latest versions.

Your faces aren't really being synced. Your phone is just making a separate album where all the faces, that are on the phone, are organized by faces. It's just like the album with videos and panoramas. :-)
If this doesn't help you, try this other threat on the same subject:
My iPhone and Macbook Pro are syncing "Faces" when none are checked to sync
