Photo ibooks author

Hi,
I'm putting a book together with portraits (photo's), audio and text. But when I have transferred it to my iPad I can't tap the photo to make it fullscreen. I can pinch it but it won't 'stick'. It seems simple but it doesn't seem to work only in gallery but I have just one portrait on each page.
Anybody an idea?
Fjodor Buis

If you select the image, go to the inspector and click on the "Widget" (folder with a gear in the middle) tab you can add a "frame" by selecting one or all of the check boxes (title, caption, background) and you end up with a photo which will expand to full screen when tapped on the iPad.
It works great and if you don't need a title or a caption, just leave the text box empty.
However! There does appear to be a problem if you set up one of these frames in your template. For now, when I drag and drop a new image over the "framed" placeholder, the new image appears just fine. But, when you open the eBook on the iPad, the full-screen images all come up as the original placeholder image.
I haven't found a way to fix this, so as it stand right now I will have to layout each of these pages by hand. Not the end of the world for the size document I'm working on, but one **** of a job for anyone with a large batch of images to work with.
Hopefully someone will come up with the hidden attribute that needs changing in order to fix this.

  • When importing photos with iBooks Gallery widget, is anyone aware of a technique for simultaneously importing the photo's description (or jpeg file name) and writing it into the iBook Author caption field for the imported photo?

When importing photos with the iBooks Author Gallery widget, is anyone aware of a technique for simultaneously importing the photo's description (or jpeg file name) and writing it into the iBook Author caption field for the corresponding imported photo? I have 4,800 stills to import and can't imagine it's necessary to copy and paste the description for each.

As always, feel free to use the 'Provide iBooks Author Feedback' menu item for features you'd like added in the future, etc.

  • Want to see examples of creative photo-based iBooks made in iBooks Author

Can anyone direct me to some creative, high-quality photo based books made in iBooks Author? Not how-to books, but well done, interactive, photo-essay books. Books where photos and words interact would be especially helpful. I have searched on the iTunes store, but have yet to find any good examples.

    vinnyvg:
You are man who makes assumptions based on what, I don't know.
Nowhere in anything I wrote is there anything to suggest "You seem to indicate you cannot create your own style by taking a basic iBA template and making changes to suit your preferred colour scheme and within the book set a layout which compliments your pictures and offer an interesting composition to prospective buyer."
Where do you come up with such things?
You also appear to read very selectively.
You say, "I suggest you first master iBooks Author and its functions before setting out on a project."
Yet, I had already written this:
"I have since completely built my first iBook..."
Complete, I might add, with its "own style" I made by "taking a basic iBA template and making changes to suit your preferred color scheme."
"IF you cannot find photo books on the iBooks store.... Go to a book shop or library and study the various layouts for your ideas."
I am not looking for layout ideas per se. I am looking to see what other creative people have done with the tools of iBooks Author, tools that are new to me, so that I might use those tools to better execute the ideas in my head. I cannot find this kind of information in a library or book shop.
Currently, in the iBooks store, there are a total of 86 "Made for iBooks" books in the Arts and Entertainment selections and I can find no Photography and certainly no photo essay book sections. Only a few of those 86 books are photography books and they tend to be celebrity based. There must be at least hundreds, probably thousands, of photo based iBooks somewhere on the iBooks store made by non-celebrity photographers. Among these, there must be some jewels. I have not found them. I had hoped that somewhere out there there would be someone such as yourself with more experience with iBooks Author and the iBooks store who could have pointed me toward them.
A knowledgable person with a desire to help could have done so in one sentence.

  • Photos Do Not Appear When Dragged Into Ibooks Author

I formatted my images to 72 DPI .png files and when i drag and drop them into Ibooks Author I can see them, I can manipulate them, resize,  add captions.  When I do a test the images appear in the text view portriat mode of the Ipad but when in the landscape mode, the images do not appear. There is just a blank space with a caption.   If I create a photo widget and drop the photo inside I am able to see it on the Ipad however that widget does not allow me to resize as I would like.  Does anyone have a fix for this issue or an idea?
    Thanks
    Chris A.

    Confirm your process here:

And remember - layout in landscape...edit in portrait. Always delete a placeholder image before adding your own.

I created a book in iBooks Author using the Photo Book template. When I rotate to portrait orientation, the photo or widget disappears and a table of contents appears with only the interactive media showing.

Thanx for the prompt response, KT. I have indeed seen that thread, only just after I posted the question.
I have spent hours on the phone with what I now know is a call center in Texas on this question.
I think Apple could be a little more "hands on" with iBooks Author users, and it should also be pointed out that landscape photos will not display in portrait mode.
In my case, I used gallery widgets to display vertical photos, since they look better in portrait mode.
But instead of simply rotating, the page disappears and a TOC of interactive media appears. The gallery behaves as expected when tapped. This is not what I expected, but since the gallery works, I can live with it.
Right now I have "tickets" telling me to "fix" this "problem or to disable portrait mode.
I don't want to disable portrait mode.
Will Apple accept the books if I tell them this is not an "error?"

  • How do you use a photo as a placeholder for a video in ibooks author?

I am having trouble in ibooks author, I am trying to use a still photo as the place holder for a video, so what I want to do is when you click on the picture, a video will start playing. If anyone knows how to do it, please let me know, thanks!

iBooks Author lets you use an image, such as a .PNG (even one with transparency) as a poster image for your video. When tapped, this image will open your video in full-screen mode.
To do this, first drag your video file onto the page in iBooks Author to create a video widget. Select the widget and, in the Inspector panel under the Widget options, choose the Interaction tab, and check "Full-screen only" (Note: Using a separate image as a placeholder will only work if this option is checked).
Next, simply find the photo file you'd like to use as your poster image—it can be any file, not necessarily a frame from your video—and drag it over the video widget on the page until you see the edges highlighted in blue, and release. That image is now the placeholder for the video, and when tapped it will launch your video in full-screen mode.

  • The new photo app and iBooks Author

I updated to Mac Os-x 10.1.3 and when opening iBook Author, in the media picker under photos the new photo app is missing to pick photos.
Does anyone have a solution? or do I need to be patient for an update.
    Brgds, Jelger

OK some progress to report as a temporary fix.
It looks like when you install the Photo update the relationship between iBooks Author and your photos is broken because the media pane shows no images.  I had the same issue as Jelger.
However, iPhoto is still in your applications folder so I tried opening it (as I prefer the ability to organise photos in the old program).  To my surprise the act of opening iPhoto seemed to restore a link with Author.  So now, when I open Author I get access restored to my iPhoto library and can use my old working method.
Of course, this won't last for ever.  Apple will not support iPhoto any more so someday an update might affect it.  Also, if Apple bring out a fix to link Author and the new Photo this would break the link I have re-established with iPhoto.  I'm also concerned that an update linking Author to Photo will make navigation more difficult.  iPhoto has a natural structure for finding images to  put in books whereas Photo does not.
Anyway, for the time being everything works again.....  I hope this helps.

  • I modified photos outside of ibook author, does it automatically update it

    Hi
Is there a way to update photos that have been modified, say in Photoshop. As I am doing it now, I have to delete photo and re-add it; not an efficient process.
    Thanks

I address this mainly to those who may view who have similar questions.
While its always good to send in feedback,  fact is the last update showed that in the main,  feedback ideas, suggestions and request have been - as yet - ignored.
The software is provided free and was created to suit Apples requirements for ebooks made for the iBooks store.
It should be remember Apple recommend  that the all content of a book  should be prepared OUTSIDE iBooks Author and when  editted to its final version, imported into iBA and tuned in as needed.
Text can be created in MS Word or iPages or any simple text editor and  imported into your book for a final edit.
iBA does have  an image editor = View > Adjust Image - which  will make basic corrections to images.
You can also "crop" using the Mask function.
Apple IMHO, are never going to  integrate an image editor anything near as good as Photoshop or any of its lesser functioned alternatives.
BellaGolfer: In your case, you  had the images prior to importing into your book, logically you still have that version. If at a later stage you have  changed the images, all that is needed is to drag and drop into the same imageholder in your book and  it/they replace your old version(s).
Ofcourse if you  want to change images or text  after your book is in the iBooks store... it will need a book update to be delivered.
Its better you use whatever image editor you are familiar with to adjust your images - and if needed, use the iBA Adjust Image to tweak if needed.
A very useful video showing  the functions etc,. of iBA can  viewed  and there is full iBA User Guide and other  must have  guides  which can be downloaded  from your   iTunes Connect > Deliver your Books page
To any newcomer wondering how to set up accounts - the user guide above takes you from that to delivering your  finished book.

  • Why do I have to use iPhoto to add photos to iBook Author?

As a photographer my photos are all in Lightroom and I use Photoshop.  I don't own and don't intend to own Aperture and have long since stopped using iPhoto.  While I love Apple products and own lots of them, I don't want to have to maintain a separate system just to use iBook Author.  I've been wanting some time to play with this for ages and have some ideas for books that I really want to play with but ....  photos and video are an issue for me.  I don't use iMovie either, I use either Final Cut Pro or Premiere.  Please, please tell me there is another way to use media with iBook Author???
    Frustrated ....

    Hey Herbgarden,
Media can be dragged from the Finder or from another application directly into iBooks Author.
You can also add media files (such as images) to a page by dragging them from the Media Browser, the Finder, or another application.

  • Is there any way to embed the pdf file in the book created in iBooks Author to make it available to be downloaded or sent to email? So that the user can print it out.

Is there any way to embed the pdf file in the book created in iBooks Author to make it available to be downloaded or sent to email?
I'm making the book for children and there is one chapter providing coloring pages. So I wish to attach pdf files that allow users to download it at the end of chapter so that  they can print it out. Been searching through discussion, I've found some advice about taking screen snapshot page-by-page > then send the pics from photo album to email. However, I'm wondering if there's a way that make the process easier.

Warehouse that PDF on your own server, then link to it from your book.

  • Best workflow practices for iBooks Author re Enhanced Books?

    Hi
I have already published one Enhanced iBook in iTunes (The Wandering Gorillas) about my research in Rwanda.  I am now working on several others which will contain much more interactive media - photos and video.
I have vast amounts of unique photos and video - which would be useful for education purposes. So, 'where fools rush in...' I began to creat a new Enhanced iBook with lots of rich media.
However, I immediately started to have serious problems as the fille sizes grew very large - due to the many images and especially because iBooks Author creates versions etc.  Thanks to solutions provided on another post by Pondini & Linc Davis these problems have now been resolved and I have regained my 'lost' 100 GB - which had been gobbled up into the folder DocumentREvisions and private/var - you can read their solutions here
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22800295#22800295
Now, I wish to avoid the same problems - and try to get the best possible workflow to use when creating Enhanced iBooks - which contain lots of rich media files such as photos and video.
And so I am asking advice form anyone who has created such iBooks using iBooks author - or who is an expert in the finer workings of this software.
First -  Since Apple restrict the final iBook size to 2 Gb (and recommen smaller) I am considering creating my new iBook via separetly published chapters - so that each will be less than the max 2GB.  Obvioulsy these will have to have some 'stand alone' usefulness!
But, is this a good practice? has anyone done this? Is there any way for the separate chapters to be later combined - by the user - in order to have a complete, coherent book?
Second, re image file sizes.  For best quality on their new Retina Display iPads Apple suggest images of (No larger than ) 5000 x 5000.  I used this - and it produced image file sizes of 20 -30 MB.  I did some other trials - using images of 1024 x 1024 max - and on my iPad 2 (non Retina) my failing eyes could not see any difference?  Their file size was reduced to 2- 300 KB
Would the difference be  obvious on a Retina Display though?  Should we use the largest possible resolution (and file size) - but this has serious implications for the eventual overall iBook file size.
    What is the best compromise?
Third,   I have an iMac with an i7 250 Gb Flash drive and a separate 1TB hard drive.  All my 'media assets' are on the 1TB hard drive. The still images are exported from my various Aperture libraries - as jpegs of the size mentioned above (and into a newly created folder) .  Same with video - to Apple's recommendations for video replay on iPads.
So far I have kept and used the actual iBook Author file - for the new book - on the desktop of my 250GB i7 Flash Drive.
But, as I reported in the other post, this soon caused me huge problems as my disk space was rapidly 'eaten up' by duplicate versions etc.
I am now considering using a separate, 1Tb Firewire External drive for the actual iBook Author file (with backup copies onto another 1TB drive) I am certain this will be slower than using my internal flash drive - but is this 'good practice?'  Can it avoid the problems of all 'lost' storage space which caused me such hassles when using my flash drive?  Or, will this be minimised if I create separate iBooks from separate chapters?
And, delete uneccessary versions of course!
I do feel that this is an emerging issue which many will face - as we incorporate more and more rich media into our iBooks.
Any help or suggestions are gratefull received!

Thunderstorm played havoc with box from my ISP - and I am ruuning on a reserve and internet access flaky!
but, here goes with one reply.  Will have to wait later re tests for your other suggestions when weather calmed down
Re   'as Apple suggessted'   I should have said - no larger than 5000 x 5000 pixels (the 3240 was my vertical proportional dimension from choosing 5000 horizintal dimension)
this is from Ibooks Author help
Add and edit photos and other images
You can add a photo or other image (in a supported file type) to a page in your book by dragging the photo from theMedia Browser, the Finder, or another application.
After adding a photo to your book and positioning it on the page, you can use the tools in iBooks Author to mask (crop) the photo; change its brightness, contrast, and other image qualities; or erase its background.
Important:  When you export your book for distribution outside the iBookstore, images are automatically scaled to a width of 2048 pixels, which is optimized for iPad with Retina display. Readers can view these images on other iPad models, but the viewing experience might be slower. You can improve the viewing experience on iPad models without Retina display by using images no wider than 1024 pixels.
    ShowMask (crop) a photo
ShowChange a photo’s brightness, contrast, and other settings
ShowRemove the background or unwanted elements from a photo
Important:  Images can’t be larger than 25 megapixels (5000 x 5000 pixels) or 50 MB.

  • Ibooks author image size

    Hello ibooks author new users,
Any idea about the "good size" for a picture or photo in order to create a not too heavy ibook?
I am working on a new edition of a 19e century old book in French.
More than 20 chapters + 1 different picture for the first page of each chapter + 15 to 20 interactive images (old maps + engraving) within the book = 100 Mo for the book already... So it is scary or attractive ?
What about the other books already in store? Any limit?
Any "specialist" or studio around able to improve and to lighten my work at the end?
    Thanks for your help.
    Frederic

You can look at other books already in the store to give you a perspective how they act and feel.
Know that the max book size is 2GB. Also know that anything over 20mb must be downloaded via Wi-Fi or docked connection.
