Photo images blank in Preview

Thanks for any help with this. All attachments (jpeg images) in emails are no longer visible in preview. I can see the photos on the sidebar, and when I select print preview I can see them also. If I try to rotate the photo on the preview pane, it rotates in the sidebar, as though the photos were there, but the screen is blank. Text attachments open fine, and I can open photos in iphoto. This is only occurring with photos.
I've been around the block on all the preview preferences, and nothing changes. This is a new problem since changing laptops and to snow leopard. (I cloned my old laptop onto the new one, and this wasn't a problem previously.)
Thanks for any help!

This did not work for me, I open a jpeg file and the picture is blank but I can see the icon of the file on my desktop. Also some pdf files open up with just meanlingless text where the text should be.
Both will open fine with Acrobat 9.
I also have problems viewing streaming video sites with quicktime X ....
Snow leopard has not been goos so far.
Any other ideas?

  • Finder List View and White Border around photo image files (icon preview)

Hey everyone, just curious if anyone knows how to remove the stripes from list view in the finder window? I tried a method that worked for Leopard but no luck with Snow. And for photos, the icon previews have real thick white borders around them, can these be removed (or at least inverted)? They are so distracting when looking through hundreds of images...
    Thanks,
    Jason

I just found an app that will get rid of the white borders and preserve the original date in the photo's EXIF data. It is CocoThumbX and can be downloaded from http://www.stalkingwolf.net/software/cocothumbx/.

How can I copy a photo from iphoto to PReview to make it smaller for uploading to a site that requires a smaller image?

I don't think you need Preview.
Select the image and use File->export and you have full control over the size and compression.

  • Image Capture and Preview "folder not writable" error importing to shared folder

I'm running 10.8.5 on a Late 2012 model Mac Mini. I'm trying to create a folder under my home directory where my wife can import pictures using Image Capture or Preview while logged into her account. I've tried setting permissions on the folder by setting POSIX permissions and ACLs from the command line, and also by setting ACLs using Get Info in Finder, but it seems as though both Image Capture and Preview ignore the ACLs and instead rely solely on the POSIX permissions for everyone/other (even when a relevant group is set). Unless the POSIX permissions for everyone/other are "rwx" Image Capture and Preview both give an error that the import failed, and /var/log/system.log shows errors that the "folder is not writable". I'd like to be able to set this up without making the folder and the files in it writable by everyone. My understanding was that ACLs should take precedence over POSIX permissions, but even the POSIX permissions don't seem to be getting handled properly, because the group is ignored. Any help or explanation of what's happening would be appreciated.
    Here's an example with details:
Suppose we have the users alice and bob. We want to set permissions on the directory /Users/bob/importdir such that Alice can import files from a camera there using Image Capture (or Preview, either would do), but don't want to relax the permissions more than necessary.
We create a group named bob_and_alice
We set the following permissions on /Users/bob:
    POSIX: rwxr-xr-x, owner=bob, group=staff (i.e. default POSIX permissions)
    ACLs:
    0: group:everyone deny delete
    1: group:bob_and_alice allow list,search,readattr,readextattr,readsecurity
    2: user:alice allow list,search,readattr,readextattr,readsecurity
"Get Info" shows "Read & Write" for bob and "Read Only" for alice, bob_and_alice, staff, and everyone
We set the following permissions on /Users/bob/importdir:
    POSIX: rwxrwxr-x owner=bob, group=bob_and_alice
ACLS: (these are already probably more permissive than should be necessary)
    0: group:bob_and_alice allow list,add_file,search,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,re adextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity,writesecurity,file_inherit,directory_inherit
    1: user:alice allow list,add_file,search,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,re adextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity,writesecurity,file_inherit,directory_inherit
"Get Info" shows "Custom" for both alice and bob_and_alice, "Read & Write" for bob, and "Read Only" for everyone
Alice opens a Terminal and cd's to /Users/bob/importdir. Alice can create and delete files in this directory.
Now Alice opens Image Capture and with our camera connected we try to import a photo to /Users/bob/importdir. Image Capture shows an error dialog with the text "Import error. An error occurred while importing. The item 'foo.jpg' was not imported." /var/log/system.log shows the message: "Jul 20 22:12:34 computer_name.local Image Capture[32804]: Document destination folder is not writable" If instead Alice uses Preview it shows an error dialog with the text "The selected folder is not writable" and /var/log/system.log shows two error messages:
Jul 20 22:23:45 computer_name.local Preview[33280]: Document destination folder is not writable
    Jul 20 22:23:45 computer_name.local Preview[33280]: Encountered error during image import: Error Domain=com.apple.ImageCaptureCore Code=-9934 "The selected folder is not writable" UserInfo=0x7ffda4881f00 {NSLocalizedDescription=The selected folder is not writable}
Now we change the POSIX permissions on /Users/bob/importdir to: rwxrwxrwx
The import succeeds with both Image Capture and Preview
Can anyone explain what's going on here? Is there another reasonable way to do this without, moving this shared directory to /Users/shared?

Did you figure out how to fix this?

I need your help with a decision to use iPhoto.  I have been a PC user since the mid 1980’s and more recently have used ACDSee to manage my photo images and Photoshop to edit them.  I have used ProShow Gold to create slideshows.  I am comfortable with my own folder and file naming conventions. I currently have over 23,000 images of which around 60% are scans going back 75 years.  Since I keep a copy of the originals, the storage requirements for over 46,000 images is huge.  180GB plus.
I now have a Macbook Pro and will add an iMac when the new models arrive.  For my photos, I want to stay with Photoshop which also gives me the Bridge.  The only obvious reason to use iPhoto is to take advantage of Faces and the link to iMovie to make slideshows.  What am I missing and is using iPhoto worth the effort?
If I choose to use iPhoto, I am not certain whether I need to load the originals and the edited versions. I suspect that just the latter is sufficient.  If I set PhotoShop as my external editor, I presume that iPhoto will keep track of all changes moving forward.  However, over 23,000 images in iPhoto makes me twitchy and they are appear hidden within iPhoto.  In the past, I have experienced syncing problems with, and database errors in, large databases.  If I break up the images into a number of projects, I loose the value of Faces reaching back over time.
Some guidance and insight would be appreciated.  I have a number of Faces questions which I will save for later.

Bridge and Photoshop is a common file-based management system. (Not sure why you'd have used ACDSEE as well as Bridge.) In any event, it's on the way out. You won't be using it in 5 years time.
Up to this the lack of processing power on your computer left no choice but to organise this way. But file based organisation is as sensible as organising a Shoe Warehouse based on the colour of the boxes. It's also ultimately data-destructive.
Modern systems are Database driven. Files are managed, Images imported, virtual versions, lossless processing and unlimited editing are the way forward.
For a Photographer Photoshop is overkill. It's an enormously powerful app, a staple of the Graphic Designers' trade. A Photographer uses maybe 15% to 20% of its capability.
Apps like iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture are the way forward - for photographers. There's the 20% of Photoshop that shooters actually use, coupled with management and lossless processing. Pop over to the Aperture or Lightroom forums (on the Adobe site) and one comment shows up over and over again... "Since I started using Aperture/ Lightroom I hardly ever use Photoshop any more..." and if there is a job that these apps can do, then the (much) cheaper Elements will do it.
The change is not easy though, especially if you have a long-standing and well thought out filing system of your own. The first thing I would strongly advise is that you experiment before making any decisions. So I would create a Library, import 300 or 400 shots and play. You might as well do this in iPhoto to begin with - though if you’re a serious hobbyist or a Pro then you'll find yourself looking further afield pretty soon. iPhoto is good for the family snapper, taking shots at birthdays and sharing them with friends and family.
Next: If you're going to successfully use these apps you need to make a leap: Your files are not your Photos.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
When you process an image in iPhoto the file is never touched, instead your decisions are recorded in the database. When you view the image then the Master is presented with these decisions applied to it. That's why it's lossless. You can also have multiple versions and waste no disk space because they are all just listings in the database.
These apps replace the Finder (File Browser) for managing your Photos. They become the Go-To app for anything to do with your photos. They replace Bridge too as they become a front-end for Photoshop.
So, want to use a photo for something - Export it. Choose the format, size and quality you want and there it is. If you're emailing, uploading to websites then these apps have a "good enough for most things" version called the Preview - this will be missing some metadata.
So it's a big change from a file-based to Photo-based management, from editing files to processing Photos and it's worth thinking it through before you decide.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro slowe when I open it off line to view photo images?

I had recently activated iCloud. I have it set not to copy my photos or data, but only settings and a few other categories. I opened it offline in Preview to quickly view photos on memory cards. I found it slow, with a drop down box periodically flashing open from  the top of the screen. It appears to be attempting to copy or save my images. I presume this is to iCloud, though I have it specifically unchecked and do not want it saved to iCloud. I have Dropbox, which I quit, so it is not a factor. I never save my photo images there either. In the past, it was never problem to open and view images with Preview. Now it is extremely slow to open and load images for contact sheet view. All this is recent with the addition of Mavericks and iCloud. Also, I attempted to get  out of this by quitting, but had to resort to a forced quit, as it continued to do what it was doing.
Is there a way to be sure iCloud is not copying things and slowing down my computer? Is this a glitch caused by Mavericks?
I have done scans with Sophos Antivirus and it does not appear I have any virus. I have lost all the speed of having a Mac. It is now slower than my old dual core Acer PC. I recently added a Caldigit Thunderbolt dock which has worked great to add USB 3.0 to  my early 2011 MacBook Pro which had not 3.0 ability, but this
was bypassed, as my card reader is only 2.0. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think I have found the source of my problem detailed above. Apparently, there have been problems with Preview running on OS Mavericks, dating back to October 2013, which Apple has yet to acknowledge or address. Many have had similar problems with photo images loading very slowly to the point of making Preview unuseable.
It may also explain problems I have had with flash drives and hard drives that ran on my Mac Book Pro under Lion no longer working  since upgrading to Mavericks. I found other postings on these issues.
It is a shame that I have to resort to Google as the best source to identify problems with my Mac and possible solutions. In many cases, it directs me to the source on Apple Support, which is difficult to find when one attempts a search via Apple Support. This could use some improvement.
I am new to using community support sites and Apple does not seem  to provide simple, clear directions  on how to get started. Jumping in with both feet, not only did I get wet, but I apparently "splashed" someone, as I got a hostile response from another community member on the first issue ever posted. I never did get an answer to the problem, though. I hope some find these comments helpful.
Oh, and wake up, Apple. We all would hope you monitor and glean information from these postings and act promptly to remedy problems with OS Mavericks.

How can I keep a photo image from fading away on my tv using apple tv?

Thanks for you reply.  When I paint, I bring up the photo as you suggested.  I begin painting.  After about 10 minutes or so, the photo goes blank.  And, I have to start the process over again to get that same photo.  It interrupts the painting process.  I think it goes blank due to a sleep function.  I have gone into the Apple TV settings and turned off the sleep function.  But, this does not seem to work.  What can I do to keep the image on the TV screen permanently?

  • Photo images from dig. cam [one is error and other won't open] questions

My wife inserted the sd card in the card reader and copied about 70 photo image files to the Mac. The camera that took all the 70 photos was a Panasonic DMC-LZ5 but I don't think the camera model matters much here.
For the first time, 2 of the many images seem to be corrupt. Mac X reports one photo image has an error while trying to open and reports the second image won't open.
My main concern is whether or not to just delete the two error/corrupt jpg images. My other main concern is that I don't want to keep the two images if it could affect or corrupt my hd or Mac system in some way.
I normally just trash corrupted files; however, in this case I went ahead and attempted to open both of the 2 troubled files myself later and they both opened up in Preview and didn't report any error or corruption. However, one of the jpg images defintely is corrupt when viewing it as the bottom of the image is definitely messed up. However, the other image now opens perfectly and looks fine to the eye as if nothing is wrong with it.
Here is a link to the one photo image that isn't quite right [note the obvious distortion at bottom of image]. Link is http://mysite.verizon.net/vzenvo78/question595.jpg
Further very relevant information: The SanDisk sd card that all the 70 images were on is a 1 gig card and the sd card seems to be a total loss. The sd card can't be initialized/formatted by disk utility and furthermore the sd card is no longer recognized by the Panasonic camera - the Panasonic camera won't even preview the images off the card or allow me to format the card even from the camera.

    Hello,
I see what you are talking about. I just discovered this same exact problem on a friends G5 after he uploaded pics from his Leica.
This is what I did: I ran Disk Utility from the system restore disc to verify and repair the drive. DU reported Volume Bitmap problems. DU was able to repair the disc. Next, I created a new user account and tried uploading the images from the camera to the G5 and it worked just fine. The images loaded like they should.
I also reinstalled the drivers that came with the camera.
Delete any files that your Mac reports as a problem. It's just not worth leaving them on the drive.
So...... run Disk Utility from your system restore disc. If it reports errors, hopefully DU can repair them. If not, one option is to get DiskWarrior here:
    www.alsoft.com or TechToolPro4 here: www.micromat.com
One other idea is how old is the card?
Next idea is to create a new user acccount: System Prefs/Accounts. Try using that account to upload the same images. See if they upload as they should. If they do, then the issue isn't system wide, it's just in the other user account.
Remember to always back up your images/audio/data often as you never know when you might need to do either an Archive or Erase and Reinstall.

  • Image blanks when clicking with Polygon Lasso - does not redraw

When I am in an image, selecting an area with the polygon lasso tool, every time I click a point, the image blanks out and does not redraw. I am left with my pologon selection lines and a white image where the photo should be.
The only way to get the image back is to force it to scroll. I have to extend the tool off one side of the image or another to make it scroll.  Otherwise the screen does not redraw.  I am forced to work with my images in a window instead of fullscreen to ensure that I have part of the image to scroll to when the image blanks out.  It is doing this with every click of the polygon lasso tool.
Needless to say, this is maddening!  Has anyone seen this behavior before?
I am running Adobe Photoshop CS3 on Windows XP and the program is up to date.  I have two gigs of ram and have moved up the memory allocated to Photoshop from half to two thirds.  I have stopped having other programs opened.  I also tried turning off the preference for the 3D graphics acceleration. So far nothing has worked to fix the problem.
I have about 1100 product photos to clip out - HELP!
    Many thanks,
    Lynne

I have reset the prefs, first for the polygon tool, which did not fix the problem.  Then I held down the keys on startup and told it to delete the prefs file.  I am still having the problem, although not on every single click.  It has become intermittant, which is bizarre!
This laptop was recently completely reformatted and reloaded with everything when they passed it down to me.
I checked my video driver and it is up to date.  I am on a Dell XPS Gen2 laptop running NVIDIA Gforce Go 6800 Ultra.  Unfortunately the NVIDIA site is referring me back to Dell for the driver, and the Dell driver has not been updated since 2005.  Oh, the joys of running on older equipement!

  • Iphone 6 photo image compression/ quality loss

iPhone 6 and 6 plus have pretty remarkable cameras. But oddly, Apple doesn't seem to want you to keep the high quality images and videos you take. As soon as you email let's say a 3.5 mb photo image, you are asked what size you want to email it in and given a series of compression options. Once you make the decision the first time, that decision is permanent. Apple does not really warn you that you are about to permanently, massively compress (destroy) that original image. There should be a better way to preserve original image files. The email compression decision should impact only that email -- not the master image file. But it does.
Also, if you take an amazing video on your iPhone 6, when you put that video in photostream or in the cloud or email it, there is no warning to you that you've just massively compressed the video. I took a video that was close to 10 mb, emailed it to myself to save it, then had to wipe my phone because of a problem. When i reinstalled and opened the video, it was about 10% of the size of the original video. Original gone. No warning.
It's sort of odd that Apple would not think to create better menus, options and communication/guidance around image compression.
Lastly, if you take a picture on your Iphone .. there is NO WAY to know any metadata on that image file -- unless you go to email it and you get that compressino option screen. You can't see anywhere else the image file size. Again, why make such a great camera if all you want is to massively degrade the image files the moment you do anything with them?

    Howdy elkspark,
If your camera photos still dont look quite right, I would recommend taking a look at this info from the following article to help determine what might be causing this to happen:
Get help with the camera on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Your photos are blurred or out of focus
If your photos are blurred, out of focus, or have dark spots, try these steps:
Make sure that the camera lens is clean. If you need to clean the lens, use a microfiber cloth. If you see dirt or debris inside the lens, take your device to an Apple Retail Store or Authorized Service Provider for more help.
Make sure that there’s nothing blocking the camera lens. If you’re using a case, try removing it.
With iPhone 6 Plus, a metallic case or magnetic lens could interfere with optical image stabilization. If you have a metallic case or magnetic lens attachment, try taking a picture without it. Then compare the quality.
Adjust the focus by tapping on the person or object in the preview screen. You’ll see the screen pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as the camera adjusts. In photo mode, try to stay steady when adjusting the focus. If you move too far in any direction, the camera will automatically refocus to the center. In video mode, you can adjust the focus before you begin recording.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling

It's says that file does not exist. How come? And why does it still show the image info.?
Where can i find those files (i have a daily backup)
The original image files are missing form your iPhoto library or iPhoto cannot find them, because the link to the originals has been broken. The image info is stored in the internal libraries, independent of the original files. That is, why you are still seeing them.
I restored the whole library from my backup.
Try restoring from an older backup, from before you first noticed the problem.
How large is the library, that you restored? Is the file size large enough to hold all your photos, or has the size been reduced?  If the library is still large, the photos may still be inside, even if iPhoto cannot find them.
It's says that file does not exist. How come?
What happened, before your iPhoto library got deleted? Which applications have you been running, or which new software have installed or upgraded?  Have you moved the library to a different disk or tried to use it from different user account or access it over the network?

  • New HDR Image darker than preview

Today I was using Adobe Bridge to combine sets of 3 photos with different exposures to create HDR images and sending them to Photoshop. So far today I made 20+ such images and successfully saved them into PSDs.
I just ran into an odd problem. After clicking 'Merge to HDR' in the Bridge -> Photoshop option, Photoshop did it's thing of merging my 3 images. The preview window came up, it looked perfect, so I clicked 'Ok'. Then it created an Untitled document (as it always does), except that this image is much darker than what was shown in the preview. I tried doing some light adjustments, can't get it to be what I saw in the preview window.
All of my other HDR creations were exactly the same as I saw in the preview window. What's going on?

One important thing to keep in mind is that what you see on screen when <br />working with 32-bit images IS NOT the actual image. There are no monitors at <br />least consumer priced monitors that can show 32-bit's of data. What you are <br />seeing is a faked representation. You will only see the real image when you <br />convert out to 16-bit or 8-bit.<br /><br />Also, many video cards allow you to set 32-bit color in the control panel <br />(Windows, can't speak for the Mac) this is NOT the same thing as a 32-bit <br />HDR image. The 32-bit color is the number of colors NOT the dynamic range <br />from darks to lights it is this dark to light data that can't be seen on <br />monitors.<br /><br />BTW I just recently learned this from a podcast from the digital photography <br />connection. The have Lightroom and Photoshop podcasts and just recently <br />covers HDR for both programs, this was covered as was PhotoMatix.<br /><br /><br /><[email protected]> wrote in message <br />news:[email protected]..<br />> Once you hit okay in the preview window and Photoshop creates the 32-bit <br />> image, you may want to try going to your view menu and adjusting your <br />> 32-bit viewing options.<br />><br />> [edited by host]<br />><br />> Hope this helps!<br />> -Kurt

  • Lightroom photo / images backup

How to backup in a CD the photos / images with all the corrections that I made (I don't want to backup the image / photo corrected, but the image / photo with the alterations). Thank you.

LR makes non-destructive changes. It stores these changes in a database, but your original photos are untouched, though the rendered previews show those changes.
In order to save photos with your changes applied so you can see them outside of Lightroom, you have to export the photos. An export will apply your changes by introducing them into the rendering pipeline to create a new file that represents your original plus your mods.
My understanding is that you can have your library be a mix of online and offline originals, so backing up your originals to anywhere (i.e., a removable drive or DVD) and ensuring your library is properly backed up should be sufficient for backup purposes.

My (wife's) iPad Mini loses some included photo images when emails are sent to her.  We use a GMail server and iOS 8.1.2 .
The email structure and text content are fine, but a series of imbedded images shows some images correctly, while some are shown as blank image shapes.
I have been able to gain access to all images in the email by going online to the GMail server and forwarding it to a Microsoft PC.  Any help will be appreciated as it looks as though this might be an iPad Mini problem !!

Thanks - but this is confirmed as the setting which was already "On".  But thanks for trying to help.

If images are missing then check that you do not block images from some domains.
*Tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu bar.
Check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"
Check "Tools > Page Info > Media" for blocked images
*Select the first image link and use the cursor Down key to scroll through the list.
*If an image in the list is grayed and "<i>Block Images from...</i>" has a checkmark then remove this checkmark to unblock images from this domain.
Make sure that you do not block (third-party) images, the <b>permissions.default.image</b> pref on the <b>about:config</b> page should be 1.
Make sure that you haven't enabled a High Contrast theme in the Windows/Mac Accessibility settings.
Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own colors.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above"
Note that these settings affect background images.
