Photo library disappeared

My complete photo library has disappeared from iPhoto (version 1.1.1) and I am in a state of panic as the photos go back a few years when my father was alive.
I urgently need to find the photos on my computer - there's no way I would knowingly delete them - so where have they gone to?
Help....!!!

Hi, dwelly. I suspect the reason no one has answered your post is that almost no one still has or uses iPhoto 1.x, and those of us who never did use it are hesitant to guess about how it might have worked or failed to work, and how to fix what ails it.
In the iPhoto versions with which I'm familiar, inside your Hard drive>Home folder>Pictures is a folder called "iPhoto Library." That folder contains all the pictures you've loaded into iPhoto and all the information iPhoto uses to keep track of them and how you've organized them. That folder is iPhoto's database of your pictures.
Again, in the versions of iPhoto that I know, any mucking about on your part inside that iPhoto Library folder is apt to cause pretty much the behavior you're experiencing: iPhoto opens, but few or no thumbnails of your photos are displayed in it. This is because meddling with the arrangement of things in iPhoto's database makes the database meaningless to iPhoto: the connections iPhoto expects and needs to find among the parts of the database are broken, and some of the parts may be, or seem to be, missing. The database needs to be reconstituted, perhaps from scratch. What I don't know, never having seen iPhoto 1.1.1, is how to go about doing that.
Whatever you have in your Pictures folder now, *don't move or delete any of it*. Post back here to let us know whether there is an iPhoto LIbrary folder in there, and if so, what files and folders it contains. With luck, someone who remembers iPhoto 1.x will happen along and be able to tell you how to get things back in shape again.

  • My iPhoto photo library disappeared after I used a SanDisk Cruzer Fit USB Flash Drive

Hi! Not sure if these 2 things are connected, but I bought a SanDisk Cruzer 32GB USB Flash Drive. I dragged my documents over and copied them on to the flash drive. I didn't have iPhoto open. I didn't drag any applications, photo library folders, or anything else over to the flash drive. I just dragged over 3 file folders of work and personal documents (MSWord, Excel, etc.) over to the flash drive. It took some time to copy all my documents over, so I left it overnight.
The next day, I decided it might be a good idea to also back up my photos from iPhoto. Interestingly enough, nearly all my photos had been deleted--save for photos from the last 3 - 4 weeks or so. That's right, a decade worth of photos were gone. I went online, Googled the problem, looked through this community and verified that I did not accidentally import one library into another or move (or delete) the backup iPhoto Library folder or anything. I even checked the flash drive. Nothing. Just the 3 folders worth of documents that I'd copied over.
Has anyone heard of a flash drive somehow corrupting or deleting photos from an iPhoto library?
I'm stumped. I have dug through other regular folders where I'd stashed some .jpgs so I could burn a CD for family, so I have put back about 338 photos from a library of thousands of images (some which are, of course, irreplaceable). The irony is that this last year, I'd been scanning in photos from actual physical photo albums to digitize them and have them handy on iPhoto... not knowing that they would disappear. And, of course, the double-irony is that I was using a thumb drive to back up my photos when they disappeared. If I wasn't so bummed, I'd be laughing right now.

Thanks for the helpful thoughts LarryHN. I'm having a Mac guy look at my MacBook Pro in the next day or so to see what he can find out. I described the issue on the phone... and like you, he said that saving my documents to a thumb drive shouldn't affect my iPhoto library.
One reason I bought the thumb drive was to back up my iPhoto library, but the time I got to that, it was already gone. I've thought of getting Time Machine (and have checked out other systems), but the reviews are so mixed, I'm dragging my feet on coughing up the cash right now.
When I launch iPhoto, I only see the last few weeks' worth of photos. Oddly, photos I imported 3 weeks ago appear, but are in a folder dated November 2012--when I know I took those and imported them in January 2013. So that's weird...
When I got to iPhoto Library, I have an Auto Import folder with nothing in it. "My Pictures" folder has nothing as well. I did hold down the option key while opening up iPhoto, but only my recent library (a few weeks' worth of photos) appears. I'm using iPhoto 2011 (6.2.3). I can only hope my Mac guy can help...

  • I just downloaded Yosemite and all my iPhotos have disappeared! I tried importing them from the photo library but it said there wasn't enough space on my hard drive which is rubbish, because they were there before. How do I get them back to iPhoto?

I just downloaded Yosemite and all my iPhotos have disappeared! I tried importing them from the photo library but it said there wasn't enough space on my hard drive which is rubbish, because they were there before. How do I get them back to iPhoto?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Photos and photo albums disappeared, but iPhoto library still has 60 GB.

Photos and photo albums disappeared, web gallery titles remain but show (0). iPhoto library still has 60 GB size. How do I retrieve photos, events and albums. Thanks in advance.

Are you getting an "!" in the window when you try to edit a photo. The "!" means that the library has lost the file path to the original file. This happens when there has been an interruption to iPhoto while it is writing to it's database file, Library6.iPhoto. Moving, renaming files or folder inside the library package while in the Finder is another way you can get that indication. Try the three fixes below in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. Report back on how long it took and how many photos you have in the library so we can give other users an idea of how long it may take.
3 - start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • London pictures disappear after enable iCloud Photo Library. It is any kind of problem with UK? =)

I have about 1000 pictures in my iPhone. (About 900 from Brazil, took with my Brazilian SimCard).
Last year, I went to  London and took about 50 pictures there. In that time, my iPhone was a 4S, with iOS7. (With a UK Number from a UK SimCard, don't know if this is relevant).
2 Months after, I went to US and purchased a 5s. Took about 50 pictures too, (With a US number, from a US card).
Today, I did the update to iOS 8.1, but when I enabled the iCloud Photo Library, all pictures from London just disappear.
Before iOS 8, we had something like that in iOS 7 ( I guess it was iCloud sync), and every time I do enable this thing, all pictures from London disappear. I have to restore my backup and let the feature off to have my pictures.
Anyone have any hint about why this is happen, or how to solve this thing?

Well by luck I figured out.
Restored the backup that I had with all pictures.
Went to the photo Library and selected the photos that disappear.
By some reason, don't know why, a "save" option appeared to me. I clicked in save (don't know from where to where), and when I turned on the  Library sync again. Tandam!! The photos didn't disappeared.
Anyone know how to explain this?

  • My i photo library has disappeared!!!

This morning I realised that my I photo has disappeared. The message said "we can not open i photo because you have no more library"
I tried to find it by the Research in the menu folder but it was not exist.
    So I went to: User/pictures:iphotolibrary:originals folder but it says that I have no application to open the folder;
    Thank you for your help.
    Vahine

    Hello Vahine,
Could you please explain this message "we cannot open iphoto because you have no more library".
This is not a message that is generated by the iphoto program. If the library is missing then iphoto will offer to create a new library or let you search for your current library.
I would consider running a search of your entire hard drive using the File > Find command for any folder with the name "iphoto library".
Once you locate those folders you can then tell iphoto to use them as its library by launching the iphoto program with the option key and then selecting the desired folder.
    Hope that helps.
    Cheer!

  • "Photo Library" thumbnail disappeared (use to be there) - Name also changed

    Hey,
I just got a new 3GS after my 3G was stolen. I first fired up itunes yesterday, and under 'photos' it offered a view of 4 blue folders (everything in "My Pictures"). It wouldn't let me browse 'into' a folder, so I moved the actual folder itself so it's root was in my pictures. Obviously at this point it showed, up, I selected it, hit sync.
Now -- the view from within my phone when I selected "Photos" showed my different libraries, and the one I just uploaded ( all my contact wallpapers) had the NAME of the folder, as well as a thumbnail for the first photo in the folder. I loved this..
I went back into itunes and saw the option to 'select folder', so i moved the folder back from root of my photos to where it belongs. Then when I selected that folder, the blue itunes folder viewer disappeared and now it's only the folder I selected with an empty screen.
When I go back into 'Photos' after it syncs, the preview image is no longer there, and the name of the library has reverted back from the name of the folder to simply "Photo Library" with the default picture of the stupid yellow flower.
In iTunes I can't get it back to the original way it was before I selected a custom folder. Is there any way I can get this back?
    Thanks
it's a minor detail but, I really like it cause when I show pictures to people they will see my thumbnails of the different libraries, along with cool names

Wow I actually just got it
I fiddled with it 5 seconds longer.
What I had to do was select the 'My Pictures' from the file selector, then cancel the sync (i have like 5gb of pics...), then i went away from the screen, then came back, and suddenly the folder selector is back.
I moved the folder back into root, and now it shows the name of the folder in "photos" , along with the preview image !
    Rock on

  • So I had pictures in an album called photo library and when i backed up my iphone to my computer, the pictures disappeared from my phone. They were pictures that had originally been transferred from my blackberry to my iphone

I had pictures that I transferred from my blackberry to my iphone and they were in an album labeled photo library. my phone needed to be replaced so I backed it up to my computer and now my photos are gone. The camera roll pictures are still there but my 800 photos from my blackberry are gone. does anyone know where i can recover them from? are they gone forever? any help would be much appreciated. thank you

I transferred my photos (I cant recall how i did) from my old blackberry to my new iphone.
    Okay.
i also imported the photos to iphoto but it was only the pictures from the last six months (camera roll).
    Okay.
I dunno if this information is useful but the photos im trying to recover were in an album called photo library and they were permanent and couldnt be edited or deleted on the iphone.
These photos were never on your Mac. iPhoto only imports from the Camera Roll. You'd have needed to use a 3rd party app to get any other photos from your phone.

  • Photos just disappeared from library - iphoto2

I only noticed that my collection of photos had disappeared when I uploaded a new batch from camera. I simply cannot find them anywhere on my computer.
    Recent changes to my habits:
    1. I was recently in Paris using my hotel's WIFI and I uploaded a batch of photos from camera
    2. I recently did a series of tasks on cocktail - doesn't seem likely there's a connection with the disappearance though.
    I guess they're gone forever?
But why after 5 years would they desert me?

    TD:
Yes I've looked in 'Pictures', used spotlight with some keywords and I've done a random check of other folders in HD.
I've got an Olympus Master app. and HP Photosmart Studio which have photo editing facilities but all my checks there draw blanks too.

  • ICloud Photos Disappeared after enabling iCloud Photo Library

    Hi,
I have quite a complicated problem.
About two weeks ago I bought a new iPhone 5S (now running iOS 8), to replace my ageing iPhone 5.
All my photos were backed up on the iPhone 5, and then restored onto my 5S.
Recently, when I enabled iCloud photo library (Beta) on my 5S, all of my photos from a period of time (January to October this year) became grey thumbnails on my iPhone. When I looked at an individual photo, a message: 'loading' was where the photo should have been.
The loss of all of these photos is seriously troubling for me, and anyone who can give me a solution to this problem will receive huge respect from me.

    Hi goblue123,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that some of your older photos appear to have been removed from your iPhone after turning on iCloud Photo Library beta. Please read over the attached article for why this may have happened. If the photos are still on your computer, you can sync them back to your iPhone.
iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ - Apple Support
What if some of my photos are missing after I turn on iCloud Photo Library?
iCloud Photo Library won't upload lower resolution photos and videos synced to your device from iTunes. You can use these steps to move the photos from your computer to your iOS device.
    Best regards,
    Joe

  • Can I organise photos into albums within iCloud Photo Library?

i Understand that edits / deletes etc in iCloud Photo Libary will be reflected on all my iOS devices but can I organise my photos into albums using iCloud photo library?
basically I want to take photos on my iPhone, review them on my iPad, delete the ones I don't want and keep the good ones in a relevant album (e.g. "Summer holiday 2014"). Then I want to be able to see identical albums on both my iPad and iPhone. From what I've seen so far, when I create an album and save a photo to it then that album is only local to that device?
    please help.

Are you saying it showed 800 photos before turning off iCloud photo library or that the 800 photos disappeared after you enabled iCloud photo library for the first time, the distinction is quite important.

  • Does iCloud Photo Library syncronise ALBUMS across devices?

It is not clear whether the iCloud Photo Library synchronises ALBUMS across iOS devices. NOT just photos - the Photo Stream does that but I have several dozen albums on one iPad and I want the to be recreated on another iOS devices automatically.
Can anyone actually answer this question? It seems simple enough.
Here is what I want to happen after configuring the system:-
The existing albums on iPad A appear on iPad B automatically.
Changes to an album on either A or B are reflected on the other device.
A new album created on either device appears on the other device.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks
    ELKAY

Ok. At last I have it. And as far as I can tell my problem can't be solved automatically
As far as I can tel. most existing Albums (which aren't in the iCloud) don't get re-created or synchronised. All albums on your iPad will be deleted (although oddly for me, there are three out of 70 that seem to have been kept).
Turning on iCloud Photo Library turns it on for all devices that have the same Apple ID, and that are  on a compatible version of the iOS. Any new album that is created on any device that is part of the iCloud photo library will be synced to other devices.
My approach has been to disconnect one of my iPads from the network which has all my albums and I will work through one album at a time recreating it and adding the selected photos to the album.
Much remains unclear (such as what happens to edits made on a iPad) and for a company whose story is all about ease of use, this has been a very opaque and nerve-racking experience - strating with the hair-raising message when you turn it on about deleting photos from iTunes. Before getting into the iCloud 'dream' I backed up all my photos from all devices to DropBox and from there to a USD drive.
The Photo-stream is another problem - no proper explanation of anything from the vendor - who knows where the images actually reside, and when they will disappear!
My next move is to look at Picasa as an alternative to this half-baked Apple vision.

  • Cannot open iPhoto. I get this command, " you can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.

I tried downloading iPhoto library manager as suggested by a pervious post, but even with Safari and Firefox it will not download.  The dmg image disappears before I can click on it and I get a command that says "it does not work with this architecture". I'm using a G-5 Power PC Mac running OS 10.5.8.  Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Likely that is for IntelMacs only.
If the iPhoto Library was ever "touched" by a later version of iPhoto, then you get the can't open message.
    Create a new photo library
                               Quit iPhoto.
Hold down the Option key as you open iPhoto.
In the window that appears, click Create New.
Type a name and choose a location to store the new photo library.
Click Save.                           The iPhoto Source list shows your new, empty photo library. Any photos you import are added to this library.                                                      You can switch to another library you’ve created at any time.

  • Whole photo library missing from iCloud

Connection to iCloud photo library and Mail has been flaky in the past 48 hours.
I noticed missing photos on the iphone last Saturday night for the first time.
All photos taken prior to October 14 have since then gone missing from the iPhone5S.
(pics are still available on my iPad3 and my iPhone4 running iOS 8 and 7 respectively).
Have been trying to check the content of my photo library on iCloud several times using Safari to no avail. Connection times-out and the support form appears.
Please note that I can login to my account no problem and all other services like Note, Reminders, iWorks documents, Calendars everything works just fine.
The problem appears to be related to only the photo library.
Tonight I have tried on more time to check if things were back to normal but even the photo library icon has now disappeared. (see below picture)
A clear sign that something is not working properly on the server side IMHO.
Interesting enough, iCloud system status is not reporting any problem with the servers and if I take a new picture with one device it syncs with the others.
After two days I am now getting a little impatient and wonder what else could I do to solve a problem that appears to be at Apple's end.
I have tried to contact online support but ironically they ask me for a serial number in order to proceed. It seems like iCloud customers (I am a paying one) are left on their own. Quite disappointing..
Any ideas as to what to do and/or how to report this malfunction?
    Thanks and regards
    Pieter

Things have started working again first on the iPhone but not on the Mac via the browser interface.
Later on the day I got the photo library icon up and down but still no access to the library.
Tonight things are finally back to normal. Thank you guys for pointing this out.
Surprisingly, still no acknowledgement of any kind from Apple's side regarding a server trouble, if any.
This was a severe blow to my trusting into this cloud service as well as a reminder to ALWAYS BACK-UP no matter what.
Better to be safe than to be sorry

  • I lost all of my iPhoto pictures i think. when i click on iPhoto it says "which photo library do you want iPhoto to use"

the version of my laptop is 10.8.5
there is no photo library anywhere on my computer
the "pictures" folder only has a "photo booth library" which i am not concerned with
i believe this has happened before (couple of months ago) but I'm not sure how i handled it and if it was the exact same situation
bottom line is that something pops up when i click on iPhoto and there is not photo library to choose from.
    please help!!

What happened between yesterday and now?  Did you update software? Install new software?
Did you run new software, for example cleaning applications?
Can it be, that you are now signed into your Mac from a different user account?
    Spotlight will not search everywhere.
Search with Find Any File for iPhoto Libraries -  download Find Any File here: The trial is free:
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.htmlhttp://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.php
You can search everywhere with FindAnyFile, where Spotlight will not search.
I learned this  from Old Toad , see his post here:
Re: My iPhoto Library disappeared...how do I get it back?
Download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the file name. These are files common to all versions of  iPhoto libraries.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.
