Photo Library Indexes

When I got started in IPhoto, I imported photos from an external drive. I then discovered the only way I could view the pictures was to make sure that drive was connected - which was fine (in my mind) because it took up less space on the internal HD. One problem I didn't count on was having the external drive crash. I found a place that was able to save the files but I am pretty sure they won't be in the same file structures and directories when I get them back. Is there a way that I can redirect the thumbnails to the saved files without having to do EACH file individually?? I am talking about thousands of pictures....

As TD already mentioned you probably will have to create a new library and reimport your source files. If the file structure can be duplicated exactly and the new HD is named the same as the old one then you might get away with having to relink only one photo per event/or folder. But that's a big if.
If space is that tight on your boot drive then create a managed library on the external HD and run it from there. For those times you're away from the external HD create a traveling library on the MBP and use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to copy those albums/events that you want to take with you to the MBP's library.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Importing a photo folder just with references creates a photo library 2/3 of its size. crazy!

after ignoring iphoto for many reasons over the last years i thought i give it a try with the new photo app.
i imported a 70gb photo folder - turning OFF to copy it into the library first, just refering to them - and now it ate up all my space by creating a 41gb (!!!) photo library just with references alone. so now i have a 70gb folder plus an index file that is 41gb big. i am beyond baffled.
am i doing something wrong here or are they crazy?
they cannot possibly think this is a smart way to store photos with the small internal hard drives they give us nowadays can they?

it gets even worse. "photos" has created empty subfolders of almost every photo in my original photo folder.
    thank you apple. good job.

  • HT201302 My Camera Roll is empty, but I am trying to import my Photo Library to a new computer's iPhoto...can I do that?

iPhoto isn't seeing any of my pictures.  Help appreciated.

If you meant to transfer the iPhone's photo library to a computer?
Yes you can but you need a 3rd party tool to do that:

    PC:

  • How to synchronize the photo library

I have been a PC user for years and just a week back bought a new iMac. Installed Aperture 3.2 on it and imported all the photos. Good so far.... However.
All my photos are on a hard drive and I chose to use current drive while importing the photos. When I add new photos to a speific folder, I don't see those photos appearing automatically in the aperture photo library or project corresponding to that folder.
Comparing this with Photoshop elements on a PC, it has a default option of automatically synchronizing the catalog whenever there are changes on the drive / folder that holds the photos.
Is there any such option in Aperture? So far I have not found one and it has been really painful to manage the library (I have over 20K photos).

I've used similar programs as well that "watch" a folder. I don't think Aperture does this. It tracks referenced files upon import. If I add files to the destination folder outside of Aperture I don't think it will index that folder and show those photos.
I've used both iView Media Pro (now discontinued) and Portfolio Server and they operate on indexed folders as one method of tracking as well as during the import process. What I'm trying to find is the file size of a project for both referenced projects and those stored inside of Aperture. I am burning my Projects to DVD for archival for now and would like to know when I'm reaching that DVD capacity.

  • I lost all of my iPhoto pictures i think. when i click on iPhoto it says "which photo library do you want iPhoto to use"

the version of my laptop is 10.8.5
there is no photo library anywhere on my computer
the "pictures" folder only has a "photo booth library" which i am not concerned with
i believe this has happened before (couple of months ago) but I'm not sure how i handled it and if it was the exact same situation
bottom line is that something pops up when i click on iPhoto and there is not photo library to choose from.
    please help!!

What happened between yesterday and now?  Did you update software? Install new software?
Did you run new software, for example cleaning applications?
Can it be, that you are now signed into your Mac from a different user account?
    Spotlight will not search everywhere.
Search with Find Any File for iPhoto Libraries -  download Find Any File here: The trial is free:
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.htmlhttp://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.php
You can search everywhere with FindAnyFile, where Spotlight will not search.
I learned this  from Old Toad , see his post here:
Re: My iPhoto Library disappeared...how do I get it back?
Download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the file name. These are files common to all versions of  iPhoto libraries.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.

  • How to ocr search photo library help

    Hey there
Anybody know how to index/ search my photo library via ocr so that I could search my photos for text, similar to evernote's feature but for large photo library (>15GB) mainly its just for screen shots ( so it should be easier for the text to be recognised) , I want to be able to search the photo library for specific photos.
Even better if spotlight could search the photo library, or just any other program.
    Thanks

    Hi imylove,
The photos that show up in your photo library (with the exception of the Camera Roll and the Photo Stream) are sync'd to your phone from your iPhoto library when you sync to iTunes.
If you don't want those photos on your phone, hook it up to your PC, make sure that the phone is not set up to automatically sync in iTunes, and then go to the Photo tab for your phone in iTunes, and uncheck Sync Photos. Then do your sync, and all of the photos will be deleted from your phone.
    Hope this helps,

    Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD

  • Can't open my photo library after upgrading to iPhoto 11.  is it possible to load iPhoto 9.0.1 after loading 11?  have followed all other instructions but it still won't let me open iPhoto.

can't open my photo library after upgrading to iphoto 11.  Is it possible to download iphoto 9.0.1 after installing '11.  Have followed all the other instructions and am in a loop which doesn't allow me to access iphoto or my photos.

when iphoto wouldnt open we read the trouble shooting info and it said that we may have needed to download 9.0.1 if we had an older version.  We obviously didn't download it before the upgrade and wondered if it would cause problems or indeed solve the problem if we downloaded it now!
When we try to open iphoto is says:
To open your library with this version of iphoto it first needs to be prepared
To prepare the library use the iphoto library upgrader available from Apple.
We have downloaded this twice now and it still sends us this message when we try to open iphoto.

  • Can I share an iCloud photo library between family members?

I am searching for a good photo and video backup solution for my entire family. Previously I was backing up photos to a Windows Home Server that did a weekly backup to Amazon's cloud storage; however, the system disk on the home server blew up, leaving me with the choice to rebuild the server or alternatively look for a more seamless, lightweight solution. I have large quantity of photos and video on a home server data drive, as well as a large number of photos that have been recently scanned to my MacBook pro. We have almost completely transitioned to Apple products and use Time Machine for Macbook backups, so that function of the Home Server is no longer useful.
I like the concept of Apple's iCloud Photo Library; however, I need a solution that allows photos from at least my wife's and my devices to be seamlessly backed up to the library. We use different iCloud IDs. The ideal use case would be that photos taken on any of our devices (across a set of iCloud IDs) would be shared within a single library.
Family Sharing allows you to share a number of things across family members, but currently the photo library doesn't appear to be one of them.
Any pointers on how to proceed? Will the OS X Photo app and the move to bring iCloud library to the Mac make any difference? Any alternative solutions?

Someone else can probably answer the family sharing question better than I can, but I wanted to respond with an alternate suggestion. I didn't find the features I wanted in family sharing, so I didn't give it much of a chance. It did seem like you'd have a separate album for each family member.
I just recently started using Flickr and it's great. I looked into it a few years ago and there were limitations on how many MB's you could upload per day and I don't remember being impressed by the amount of free storage. Now Flickr gives you 1000 GB for free and stores the image in the original quality and size. If you download the Flickr app on your phone, you can set it to automatically upload all of the new pictures on your iphone, ipad, etc. If you and a family member share a Flickr account, you can both auto sync your camera rolls into the same Flickr account.
Personally, I'm using Flickr as a way to automatically back up photos for free. I quickly ran out of free icloud storage and I haven't wanted to pay for more.In Flickr, the auto uploads from your phone are set to private by default, but you could use flickr to share albums with friends who don't own any apple products... unlike icloud photo sharing, that only allows your friends with an apple device to view shared albums.

  • How does a family share an iCloud Photo Library?

I have a wife and two kids, all with iDevices. We each have our own Apple ID, and we have a fifth Apple ID for the family. I'd like to have all four devices see and contribute to one iCloud Photo Library, preferably using that fifth Apple ID. Can I do this?
As a note, I do this with the iTunes Store, happily. Apple allows you to set the iTunes Apple ID as a different one than the Apple ID used for everything else. I don't see that functionality with the iCloud Photo Library.
We could, perhaps, cobble together some solution using sharing to the family library and whatnot, I guess. That may be the only way, but it seems clunky. I will figure it out if I have to.
    Thanks!
    Danny.

I do want my daughter to be able to download apps or updates to existing apps even when she is not with me, but that doesn't seem possible without sharing passwords.
That is indeed not possible. She'll either need to re-acquire all those apps through her own iTunes Store account, you'll have to give her the password to your account, or you'll have to do all the updating for her.
    Regards.

  • How to share the Photos library on iCloud Drive with other family members?

I have uploaded our family photo-library to iCloud drive (136GB+). It works great!
But how can my wife (with her own iCloud-account, but within the family) see and use our library?

Tnx for the reply, though I already feared this was the answer.
Family sharing works well for keeping contact lists separated and we do not need to see all the crap the other half shoots with their iPhone.
But as family-members, we DO want to use our communal photo-library.
It would be great if you could share your entire library with family-members or at least select which albums to share with who.
Also it is silly that you can share a photo only to one other iCloud-album. If I shoot a nice pic of the kids I would want to share it with my wife AND with others.
The same would work for contacts. The family-head should be able to assign which contacts are shared and which are separate.
I hope Apple will update the family-possibilities so that this is fixed.

  • HT1229 How can you transfer the  photo library from  an iphone to a mac.

I have a photo library on my iphone which was synced to the iphone from my pc.  Now I have a mac laptop and I cannot figure out how to get the photo library onto my mac from the phone.  The photo stream has transferred over but none of my other albums.

If the photos are in your Camera Roll on the iPhone connect the iPhone to your Mac, launch iPhoto and import directly into your library on the Mac.

  • The difference between Camera Roll and Photo Library

I am a bit confused.  I have, on my iPhone, pictures in 3 places: Camera Roll, Photo Library, and Photo Stream.  I am not sure why iPhone make these distinctions but I want them all to end up in one place: my iMac central photo library.
I  only have 3 devices, an iPhone an iPad and a desktop iMac.  I manually sync my photos to my computer from my iPhone, and do not really worry that all photos get to all devices immediately.  My question is this: How do I make sure ALL the photos from my iPhohe end up in my 'main' photo library on my iMac? Without causing duplicates.   It seems like some of the iPhone photo storage locations sync and some do not; occasionally I get a ton of duplicates.  It is confusing and I was hoping someone could help me streamline it. I know the iCloud is trying to make things easier, but sometimes it does not seem that way
    Thanks!
