Photo library missing

My photo library icon on the task bar had a question mark on it. I couldn't open it. Then I noticed it was in the trash. I can't seem to remove it from the trash and return it to my task bar.
Today I noticed that the icon was gone and just a question mark left in its place. I am really worried.

Here's your problem:
There's no library file for iPhoto 6 there. That file is called the library6.iphoto.
Unless you have that file there's nothing you can do except create and populate a new library:
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Whole photo library missing from iCloud

Connection to iCloud photo library and Mail has been flaky in the past 48 hours.
I noticed missing photos on the iphone last Saturday night for the first time.
All photos taken prior to October 14 have since then gone missing from the iPhone5S.
(pics are still available on my iPad3 and my iPhone4 running iOS 8 and 7 respectively).
Have been trying to check the content of my photo library on iCloud several times using Safari to no avail. Connection times-out and the support form appears.
Please note that I can login to my account no problem and all other services like Note, Reminders, iWorks documents, Calendars everything works just fine.
The problem appears to be related to only the photo library.
Tonight I have tried on more time to check if things were back to normal but even the photo library icon has now disappeared. (see below picture)
A clear sign that something is not working properly on the server side IMHO.
Interesting enough, iCloud system status is not reporting any problem with the servers and if I take a new picture with one device it syncs with the others.
After two days I am now getting a little impatient and wonder what else could I do to solve a problem that appears to be at Apple's end.
I have tried to contact online support but ironically they ask me for a serial number in order to proceed. It seems like iCloud customers (I am a paying one) are left on their own. Quite disappointing..
Any ideas as to what to do and/or how to report this malfunction?
    Thanks and regards
    Pieter

Things have started working again first on the iPhone but not on the Mac via the browser interface.
Later on the day I got the photo library icon up and down but still no access to the library.
Tonight things are finally back to normal. Thank you guys for pointing this out.
Surprisingly, still no acknowledgement of any kind from Apple's side regarding a server trouble, if any.
This was a severe blow to my trusting into this cloud service as well as a reminder to ALWAYS BACK-UP no matter what.
Better to be safe than to be sorry

We have no way of knowing. Maybe you did or maybe you didn't. If you don't tell us what version you have, how could we know?

I have just downloaded iPhoto from the app store. The photo library from my old laptop was backed up on an external hard drive and I retrieved the photos from there.  Now when I open the photos on my new Mac Book Pro, they are small - am I missing something?
I am using 10.8.2 Mountain Lion btw

I dragged the Photo library icon from the backup drive on to iPhoto on the laptop
That means you imported one Library to another.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
So the reason you're seeing small photos is because you're seeing the iPhoto thumbnails from the back up library.
    So, what to do?
Do you still have the back up? If so, trash this bunged up library and restore from the back up again. HOw to restore will depend entirely on how you made the back up, but no version of restoring includes importing the library.

  • After a rebuild/repair of my photo library thumbnails are missing for RAW images.

Every few months I rebuild my iPhoto library to make sure the database stays clean and up to day. This time was different though - after the rebuild/repair of my photo library thumbnails are missing for all RAW images (Canon). Images from other cameras and jpegs are all fine. Only the events with Canon RAW images have no thumbnails.
I am rebuilding the thumbnails once again but has anyone else seen this issue? Losing thumbnails to RAW images during a rebuild?

Every few months I rebuild my iPhoto library to make sure the database stays clean and up to day.
There is no need to do this. It doesn't achieve anything.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

  • Missing movie files in my project since iOS 8 and iCloud Photo Library

    Hello all,
I've been to New York at the start of 2014 and created an awesome movie project in iMovie for iOS. That was when iOS 7.1.2 was the most current release. Today, I wanted to finish up my project. I'm currently running iMovie 2.1.1 on iPad air 1 running iOS 8.1.2 and iCloud Photo Library is enabled since day one. I Opened the project today and iMovie told me there are missing movies in the project and offered me to search for them. It only found 2 out of 140 or something. Now my project timeline is filled with clip with exclamation marks and many transitions with pictures in them are missing too. I tried to download clips that are in iCloud by tapping the Cloud icon but iMovie still cannot find them. Ive also tried importing from iCloud drive, disabling iCloud photo library and syncing the movies from iPhoto using iTunes on my iMac but iMovie cannot link them to the project. I'd hate to see hours of editing work to go down the drain.
    Hope someone can help.
    RF

Ok, so sinc you turned iCloud photo library, that automatically delets all of your current photos. I found that out the hard way. I'm sorry to hear that your editing has gone to waste.   It is still odd that some media was saved though.

  • Missing movies in project since iOS 8 and iCloud Photo Library

    Hi,
I've been to Europe this summer and created a movie in iMovie for iOS. That was when iOS 7.1.2 was the most current release. Today, I wanted to finish up my project. I'm currently running on iPad air, iOS 8.0.2, latest release of iMovie and iCloud Photo Library is enabled since day one. Opened the project and iMovie complained there was missing movies and offered me to search form them. It found 19 out of 40 or something. ***??? Now my movie timeline is filled with clip with exclamation mark and many transitions with pictures in them are missing too. I tryed to download clip that where in iCloud by tapping the Cloud icon but iMovie still cannot find them. How am I supposed to fix this now? My clips are there but iMovie cannot link to them... Apple, are you reading this forum?

I recreated this same question here so it wouldn't show like its solved: Missing movie files in my project since iOS 8 and iCloud Photo Library

  • Sharing I Photo and Missing Library

On our Mac pro, have 2 accounts and share the Itunes and Iphoto libraries.
Suddenly on my wife's, I photo is missing and get a message asking if we want to create a library or look for it. My Iphoto is fine - since we are sharing the library, how do I set hers up again? If I create a new library for her, will it use the same Iphoto mine has or create a totally new one??

Here's some ways you can share with iPhoto 08. Perhaps something will ring a bell for you:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. The problem here is that OS X works very hard to keep your data safe and secure from the other users. You're trying to beat what's built in to the system. So, to beat the system
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
Lastly: This method seems a little clunky at first, but works very well. Most importantly, it uses the System to do the job for you.
Create a new Account on your Mac, call it Media. Create an iPhoto Library there. (BTW: This will work for iTunes too.)
Enable Sharing on the Library:(Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other accounts. In those accounts, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. The Library will appear in the other source pane.
This means that both users will be able to see the pics. If you want to use a pic then simply drag it from the shared Library to your own in the iPhoto Window. This means that each user can have their own edits.
If you want to add photos to the Library: Log into the Media account for that purpose.
To make it all seamless: Set your Mac to log into the Media Account automatically. Set iPhoto to launch on log-in. Then switch to your own account using Fast User Switching.
Net result: a Library that's permanently available to all users but also protected. Each user can have their own versions of the pics if they want.
No partitioning, no permissions issues. Uses no extra disk space. What's not to like?

  • Recently I went to my iphoto library and noticed that some of my albums of photos were missing. Any help appreciated, Recently I went to my iphoto library and noticed that some of my albums of photos were missing. Any help appreciated

Recently I visited my iphoto library and noticed that photos were missing and several Albums. Any advice would be appreciated.
I'm running OS 10.6.7 on a Mac Book Pro

What version of iPhoto are you running?  Any other items missing from the library?
You can try the following (assuming iPhoto 11): make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
      Fix #1
delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
    Select options #1, #2 and #6.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • ICloud Photo Library beta in iOS 8.0.2 - 1134 missing photos?

HI, I foolishly decided to try iCloud Photo Library beta which I activated (after several tries) on my iPad. I chose the "Optimise iPad Storage" option. I had 1189 photos on my iPad, but only 55 are now visible. I checked to see how many were in the iCloud (to do this, on any of my devices I can go to Settings>iCloud>Storage>Manage Storage>iCloud Photo Library> ...it confirms that there are 55 photos in the iCloud. So where are the other 1134?? If I go back to the Photos app and go to Collections, at the bottom it tells me how many photos I have in total - it correctly says 1189, even though only 55 show up. Help please!!

seriously, I don't think there's any bug. I suspect that Apple is aware of everything; I guess they're just testing different configurations on their servers, checking the load etc... another example is that obviously keeping optimized versions of images locally doesn't work for everyone. In my case and in the case of many others who posted here, full res images remain stored locally hours after iCloud has been fully synced, even when the "keep optimized" setting is checked.
Another thing, minor annoyance, updating manually (by clicking on the button at the bottom) doesn't work here; the page must reloaded. Well yes, it all works like a very early beta; shouldn't have been announced and released yet imo.

  • Photos missing in iCloud Photo Library

I have successfully imported my Aperture Library into the new Photos app on my iMac - 17866 photos and 485 videos.  All seems fine.
I then turned on the iCloud Photo Library and left it to upload overnight.  18 hours later it says 'Updated Just Now', and seems to have stopped uploading.  However, when I access the library on iCloud.com, it contains 4794 photos and videos only.  I think all the album structure is there, but many of them are empty.
My Aperture library was a referenced library, with the originals stored in the Pictures folder (not in the Aperture library).  I have read today that referenced libraries will not upload to the iCloud Photo Library.  My library also contains many Photostream imports from other devices - I don't know if these are referenced.
Can anyone help me with these questions:
    1. If referenced photos will not upload, why have some of mine been uploaded and not others?
    2.  How can I pull these referenced photos into the Photos Library (ie. un-reference them) so that they will upload onto the iCloud Library - if indeed this is the reason they are not uploading.
Hope this makes sense to someone out there.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Judith

I think I have found the solution on another thread.  Am consolidating the referenced files which will hopefully solve the problem. A bit puzzling that I didn't get the warning some people mention, that the referenced files would not be uploaded to iCloud.

  • HT6378 Missing Photos iCloud Photo Library

I'm uploading my photos to iCloud Photos using the beta web client.  They appear to upload fine and can see them all appear in my iCloud Photo Library on my IOS 8.1.1 devices, however the most recently added photos are not showing in the web client.  There are no differences in photo format - in fact
Also, the total number of photos as shown in IOS8 and the web client is different.  I know the web client is in beta but this seems like a strange issue.  Any thoughts?

  • Missing Sound and Music Library and Photo Library

A student of mine came across this issue. She installed a clean 10.7 FCPX on her Snow Leopard system. Her Sound Library is empty...not even an option for looking in her itunes library. Her photo library is also empty. I've tried adding her folders to fcp via drag and drop, in an effort to get it to "reindex" the files to no avail. The search bar in both is empty so it isn't searching for " " and coming up with nothing. The sound files are exactly where they need to be under the apple folder in the library. What is going on?! I've seen this question posted before with no answers. Anyone know of one? I've attached the frightening photos.

that was not what I was suggesting... But come come to think of it... who know what would happen ? Perhaps worth a try.
Perhaps you could try to repair the disk permissions.
Also perhaps try to delete any cache in
    Users/Account-In-Question/Library/Caches
Then delete the FCPx preferences from her user folder...
After that "Reboot WITH shift button held" THEN log in. After that do a normal reboot and log in and check
