Photo library rebuild in iOS4

My photo library suddenly started a rebuild on my 3GS after i upgraded to iOS4. At first, it looked like all the photos had disappeared. When the rebuild finished, the last few weeks of photos were gone. Any ideas on how to recover? I hadn't synced them yet with iPhoto.

This happened on my device (iPhone 3GS w/ iOS 4.0.2).
I saved couple of photos to my library using the Mail app's Save All feature. After that, my camera role disappeared. It re-built upon restarting the image viewer, and I lost all the photos I took since I upgraded to iOS4.

  • IPhone 4 Photo Library Rebuilding Error

    Hi there,
I recently ran into a problem with my photos/videos on my phone(not jailbroken)--my photo library and camera have become completely inaccessable.
When I tried to send an MMS, the photo library said that it had to rebuild. It began to rebuild and crashed. It has done this before, but I have always been able to fix it either by just opening the library again or turning off/on my phone. That was not the case this time. I tried opening my camera to take a photo because that had helped in past situations, but it did the same as the library--began rebuilding then crashed and back to the home screen. BUT before the camera closed, I was able to see the thumbnail in the lower left corner of the last photo taken. This has to mean the photos are still there, right?
I have reset it multiple times and am hoping I will not have to do a complete factory restore.
After hours of trying to fix it on my own, I am near the point of giving up hope.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

The photo sync is one way - computer to iphone.
You cannot sync the photo library form iphone to computer.  Since the pics came from your computer in the first place, they should still be there and should be included with your regular backup of your computer.  The iphone is not a storage device.
The pics are reduced in resolution when synced to iphone anyway.

  • IPhoto 8.1.2 - Rebuilding Photo Library - Photo Library is unreadable

    Hi,
I am using iPhoto 8.1.2 and have had no issues with iPhoto for many years. However, when I tried to access iPhoto yesterday I obtained the following message:
"You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.
You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto. QUIT"
I then tried to restart and re-install the iPhoto 8.1.2 update. Afterwards I got the following message:
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup. QUIT"
I backed up my photo library and went ahead and restarted the computer again and then proceeded to try and rebuild my photo library. After looking at several discussion threads in this forum, I hoped for the best and checked the following boxes:
    - Rebuild the photos' small thumbnails
    - Rebuild all of the photos' thumbnails
    - Recover orphaned photos in the iPhoto library folder
    - Examine and repair iPhoto library file permissions
    - Rebuild the iPhoto library database from automatic backup
It took a long time, however in the end it seems like iPhoto was once again able to access my photos. However, there are 3 things that make me feel concerned:
    (1) I don't think all my photos were present. Originally, if I am not mistaken, there were around 22,000 photos and now only 20,000 are present.
    (2) During the process of rebuilding the library, iPhoto gobbled up another 5GB of hard disk space. I don't know why, but I think iPhoto might have doubled at least some of my photos.
    (3) Afterwards it seemed like iPhoto froze during "building thumbnails" (the blue bar was about 80-90% complete) - possibly because of lack of hard disk space - and after letting it work over night, I decided to force quit iPhoto this morning.
I then decided to throw away the new "rebuilt library" because of the missing photos and the extra 5GB. After throwing the library away, I placed once again my previous backed up photo library in the pictures folder. So, essentially (I think), I am back to square one.
I would appreciate any help and advice on what I should do. I am afraid of doing the wrong thing and irremediably doing damage to my photos and photo library.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi TD,
Thank you for your quick reply and support.
My HD has a capacity of about 320GB. When I received the error message I had about 24 GB free space. The actual Photo Library is about 19GB in size.
I did the back up on my hard disk, after duplicating the Photo Library I had about 5 GB left over space during the Photo Library Rebuild.
However, after I did the rebuild, the Photo Library size jumped up to over 24GB! Leaving me with only 100MB of HD space left, at this point the thumbnail rebuild seemed to stall. This is when I decided to eventually force quit iPhoto.
Now that I have thrown away the bloated Photo Library and returned to the original one, I am back at about 25GB free space.
I think I know the source of my issue, I don't know if this will help you in advising me on how to get myself out of this mess. I foolishly did a clean up of my hard disk with a clean up / space freeing program. I think one of the little files that was accidentally cleaned up was linked to / related to my iPhoto library.
Thanks for the link to iPhoto Library Manager. I realize that this is definitely an option, but if possible for me only as a last resort (I would like to keep all the books, and calendars data, etc. if possible).
Are there any other solutions? Why did iPhoto double some photos during the rebuild? Why did my Photo Library bloat up in size during the rebuild?
Did I check too many check boxes? Can I attempt another rebuild and if so, what can I do to do it properly?
Thank you again for your help.

  • Hanging during library rebuild

I was finding way too many black triangles in my 135 GB library.
So I decided to try and rebuild the library using options 1,2, and 6 in the rebuild library option screen.  The library is on a 500 GB USB external drive with nothing but the iphoto library on it.  It is connected to a Intel Core Duo Mini running 10.6.8 and iphoto 9.1.5
I started in Wednesday October 5th.
    The screen show:
    "Examining photo library..."
    and another window:
    "Rebuilding library: 26560 Version restored."
The grey wheel is still spinning.
It has hung on this screen for 71 hours and counting...
I have a screenshot at this link:
    /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/162/16299336-1.png
    QUESTION:
    1. Since my database is 135 GB with 26,560 photos/videos is it expected to take this long?
    2. If not, then what can I do differently?

That's way too long.  Quit iPhoto, use Force Quit if you have to.  Then try rebuilding just the preferences option (#6) to see if you can get thru that. If you do then try #1 and #2.
I don't have a library that large but for a 2,500 photo library rebuilding only takes about a 40 seconds using those three options. So by scaling I would expect your library should take around 5 minutes. However, with the library on an external USB drive it will take longer.  Don't know what the speed difference will be.
After #6 I'd try #1 next.  The automatic backup of #2 may be damaged.
If none of the iPhoto rebuilds fix your library you're next step is this:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • I cannot open iphoto- the message I am getting says Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Comma

i cannot open iphoto- the message I am getting says Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command-
I tries and it doesnt work!!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • My iPhone library says library rebuilding I cant fix this I am trying to recover my photos and video please help.

My grandfather recently passed away. I have photos of our last moments together and i went to upload them to computer and Iphone says library rebuilding. I cant see the photos on the harddrive or anything. I am really nervous I lost these i had a video and everything I am really lost for words.....if anyone can give me any help on how to fix this i read something saying get the Iphone browers but it wont install.

Image Capture will only import photos and videos from the camera roll, not from photo stream.  In order to import them with Image Capture, you would first need to save the photo steam photos to his camera roll by opening his my photo stream album, tapping Edit, tap all the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll.  You can then import them with Image Capture.  After doing so, delete them from his camera roll by opening his camera roll, tap Edit, tap the photos you want to delete, then tap Delete.
If you did this carefully, he would never know.  The risk is that you accidently left one or more photo stream photos in his camera roll and he noticed it.
Before doing this, check to see if the photo stream photos are already in his camera roll.  The may be as all photo stream photos originate from the camera roll.  Unless he subsequently deleted them, they would still be there and could be imported with Image Capture without needing to change anything on his phone.

Best way is to restore your backup from before the problem, rebuild it and update it again

  • IPhoto will not open want me to "rebuild photo library" and restart

When I try to open iPhoto i get this error message:
"Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup."
I have tried everything it says, and updated iPhoto, although this problem was happening before today's update.
I just purchased my macbook this past weekend and I am stupid when it comes to mac stuff! Thank you all in advance...

I figured it out. It seems that I some how deleted the folder name where iPhoto stores stuff.

  • After a rebuild/repair of my photo library thumbnails are missing for RAW images.

Every few months I rebuild my iPhoto library to make sure the database stays clean and up to day. This time was different though - after the rebuild/repair of my photo library thumbnails are missing for all RAW images (Canon). Images from other cameras and jpegs are all fine. Only the events with Canon RAW images have no thumbnails.
I am rebuilding the thumbnails once again but has anyone else seen this issue? Losing thumbnails to RAW images during a rebuild?

Every few months I rebuild my iPhoto library to make sure the database stays clean and up to day.
There is no need to do this. It doesn't achieve anything.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

  • I rebuild a photo library without a backup?

I rebuild a photo library without a backup .. it shows
"The photo library needs to be upgraded to works with this version of photo library
Quit or Upgraded .. i exit the app .. and then i looked up in my application then i have few folders
Metadata backup . what it's ? All my pictures in it , is there anything i can do be4 i click on the upgrade version?
I dont want to lose my photos.. If i upgraded it will my pictures stil be there?

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

    Hi all,

  • Photo Library in Ios4

i just noticed that in photo folder i have two folders i.e. camera roll
and photo library. in photo library there are 3 pics that are repeated from camera roll and i am not able to delete the folder photo library, any one with any clue about it, i have 3gs 32gb on ios4.0.1

    You can't remove Photo Library.
Photos and videos that were captured by your iPhone are stored in the Camera Roll as well as a photo saved from a received email, from a website, or from a received MMS.
Photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync/transfer process are stored in the Photo Library, which is selected under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. You can remove all photos from the Photo Library by deselecting Sync Photos under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes followed by a sync, but you can't delete the Photo Library folder or storage area from your iPhone.

  • How to get iPhoto back in order after recall? Is rebuilding your photo-library dangerous?

I recently had my iMac recalled, and when I got it back, about a quarter of my 62,000 photos only show the thumbnail vies. When I try to enter them to edit them, I get a black exclamtion point within a white circle and no access. I called support and did the 6 steps to rebuild. No results so far.
My back-up is questionable beucase as the comupter hard-drive was dying, it stopping backing up the exteral hard-drive 4 months prior to the actual recall when they replaced my hard-drive.
SO . . . I spent 20 hours putting every **** photo on DVD's before the recall to make sure I didn't lose them. Now I can reload the photos from the DVD's and the photos are all there and normal. However it is time consuming.
THE QUESTION IS - SHOULD I DO THE MAJOR REBUILD WITH APPLE SUPPORT, OR CONTINUE TO RELOAD FROM MY DVD'S?

    Thanks OT,
I did the list of repairs APPLE support gave me, but I do not believe it included thte Option+Command launch. Is that a full rebuild that risking losing my organization (books, slideshows, etc)?
I do have two external hard drives which I alternate every few months in case of fire, and which are connected (one at a time) with time machine. Apparently during the internal hard drive failure I missed that the external backups stopped working, and the faulty hard drive would not let me back up when I tried before the recall. NOW my backup works, but it is backing up the faulty data! If I use the old back up I lose 4 months of data, if I use the new I have the fautly data. I think I am back to reloading with the DVD's I made. By the way, I made them becuase I had a computer AND it's external hard drive fail beyond repair 4 years ago. At that time I was able to rebuild my photo library from discs becuase I had made a CD or DVD of every project as I downloaded it from the camera. Heres to backing yourself up in multiply ways!
    Oh my.

Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7)  and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
