Photo library storage issues

why does my phone say I have data in my photo library even though I've deleted everything from my camera roll and my photostream
I also shut off my photostream.

Hi szimmer38,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iPhone. If you are having an issue with a mismatch in the reported storage/number of photos between iOS on your iPhone and iTunes on your computer, you may want to make sure you have a backup of your data, then try the following troubleshooting steps (the article is aimed at a slightly different issue, but the steps are also helpful for storage reporting issues):
If your device gets stuck during startup
When starting up, you might see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen for a long time, or your device might restart again. Try these steps:
Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
Put your device in recovery mode.
When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.

  • Photo library storage problem

    Hey guys,
I have deleted all the photos from my 5s. Including the deleted photos. ALL of them, but in Storage - Photos&Camera - Photo Library is shown that i have 3.7GB occupied. Also in iTunes i can see i have 568 photos, but i cannot see them on the iphone.
    Any idea what is happening?

Any shared photostreams? If not, then next time you are plugged in to iTunes, turn off all photo syncing and disable photo sharing under iCloud settings on the phone. After the next sync, see what you show for photo storage.

  • ICloud Photo library storage optimisation

I cannot make this think work..! Open , close IPL buttons...! but ...! same storage in my iPhone and in my iCloud..!

See the quote below from iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ - Apple Support
That link has some other details but doesn't explicitly state (at least that I could find) how the situation where you have photos from other sources added to iCloud Photo Library are dealt with on your phone if you no longer have space.
How does iCloud Photo Library save space on my device?
If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your iOS device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. iCloud Photo Library stores the original, high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and can keep lightweight, device-optimized versions on each of your devices. As long as you have enough storage, recent photos and videos that you access the most will stay on your device at full resolution.
To turn on Optimize [device] Storage on your device, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera, then select Optimize [device] Storage. You need an Internet connection to access an original photo or video that’s stored only in iCloud.

  • Photo library storage not cleared in the usage

i have deleted all the images from the home photo library but still the usage is showing 540mb in photo library. the shared photo stream is also been turned off but there too it shows 87mb. I refreshed the usage & restarted the phone too.

The title and the Filename are not the same thing. In the absence of a title, iPhoto displayed the filename. Photos doesn't.

  • Photo library storage

is it possible to store you i photo library on an external hard drive?

    jamesk1
    Yes it is.
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Photos & Camera / Photo Library Storage Bug?

I have 3.3 GB of phantom photos and videos in my Photos App. I have removed all photos and videos from my iPhone. Settings > General > Usage > Storage / Manage Storage > Photos & Camera still reports 3.3 GB of storage is being used.
I have made sure that all photos and videos have also been removed from the "Recently Deleted" album in the Photos App.
I have made a local backup using iTunes on my Mac, Restored iPhone to iOS 8.1.3 and then Restored Backup from iTunes on my Mac. No content in the Photos App, but the storage is still being taken up.
I made an Apple Support call and the only advice they could give me was to restore my iPhone and set it up as a new device.
This bug was in iOS 8.1.2 and remains in 8.1.3

Yes, that is strange.  When you're in the Manage Storage section of Settings, tap on 'Photos & Camera' and it should show you a breakdown of which parts of the app are using storage.
It's possible that the corruption is in the app data somewhere, so the issue may always come back after restoring from a backup.  However, I'd be curious to see if the same issue persists after erasing all content and settings then restoring from an iCloud backup (rather than iTunes backup).  Since iCloud downloads photos AFTER the settings have been restored (as opposed to iTunes, which restores settings and photos at the same time), it might recognize that no photos are supposed to be downloaded and the Manage Storage section of your Settings may display properly.  Just a suggestion.

  • I can't take pictures on my phone b/c it says I have 10.1gb of photo library storage and 3.8kb of shared photo stream,I don't know what that means. My photo stream is off and I only have 500pics and its a 16gb phone, what can I do to my photostream?

Do the pictures on my old phone add on to my new phone on photostream?

Make a backup of your laptops hard drive to an external hard drive or a thumb drive.
Videos take up a lot of memory.  One second of videos is like dozens of pictures.  How much time, in total minutes & seconds, do all 22 of these videos add up to?

  • ICloud error message on iPhone saying I don't have enough space to store photos when in fact I have 1.5gb free and my photo library on my phone only has 22 photos. What's happening here and how to I fix this?

I get an error on my iPhone saying that iCloud photo library storage has run out of space and it will stop uploading photos from my phone. However, my iCloud has 1.5gb of free storage and my photo library only has about 22 photos. So, what's happening here?

Are you using iCloud photo library beta.
Are any of your photos actually video.

  • How does iCloud Photo Library and Optimize iPhone Storage Work?

Even Apple Phone support can't answer these questions:
How does iCloud Photo Library (Beta) from yesterday's 8.1 update with Optimize iPhone Storage turned on work? (I'm on an iPhone 6)
It only stores your iPhone/iPad versions on your device, which is amazing. Why would you need anything else? It freed up around 8-10GB of space on my device which is amazing. But how does it work when you use it?
When you email it seems to ask you, when sending what size you want to send like it's always done. It gives you the original 2.4MB version. This works like I'd imagine and when I received the test email the photo was correct. In this case I assume it hits iCloud and sends it from there, not your actual device. (Like it doesn't re-download it to email it). Correct?
When posting to Facebook, does it do this same thing? Or is this something Facebook has to build into their iOS app in an update? Or does it just work? Correct?
When posting to Instagram, does it grab the right version. Obviously the phone optimized version should be fine, but when viewing on a Desktop version of Instagram at instagram.com, will it show the right version?
Sometimes I backup photos using Image Capture on the Mac. If I did that right now, would it only grab the iPhone versions? Obviously I can just test it but it'd be amazing if someone who knows these things could explain all of these use cases.
Do you need to be on
In closing it's more of how does this work? Does it work? Why wouldn't you want to use this feature if it saved space and made more sense? I guess I just would love some real clarity since not even the blogs are explaining how it works in every application.
In closing part 2. It does seem to work really well, it's just those fringe cases. I just viewed all my photos on https://beta.icloud.com/#photos and they're all there, easy download of the high res, delete, it deletes from my camera roll on my phone, it's amazing, it works, it's magic. Just tell me what issues there are with storing only low res iPhone on my device and if there are none, game on!
    Thanks!

And of those 4.3GB of backup, my Photo Library is 1.4GB.
So my question is, how do I prevent my Photo Library from being backed up to the cloud, since I already have a backup of it everytime I connect to iPhoto and it copies all those photos to my mac?
I don't know, sorry. It's supposed to work alongside Photos & iCloud, so that photos are stored only once. When it doesn't work you have a couple of options as I see it –
Delete the old backups on iCloud to hopefully start over (I don't like deleting the only backup of anything).
Forget about iCloud backups & use iTunes to backup instead, it might not be suitable if you have no computer etc.
    Buy more storage for iCloud.
I don't use iCloud backup, it bemuses me with issues like this, there is no easy way to resolve when it fails.
And one more question while we are at it...can I erase iphoto from my computer now that I have the new Photos app?
That is up to you. If you are happy you do not need it & have a backup of it go ahead & remove it. You can re-download it from the app store if it is already in your Mac App store account.

  • Photo library occupy big storage

this is not the issue related to iTunes! in the storage usage, there are four items for the Photos&Camera: Photo library (2.1GB), synced from iTunes Library (0.8kb), My photo stream (181mb), Shared Photo Stream(20.4MB). I can not figure out what the Photo library means, and why it occupies so much. I tried to restore my phone5s a few times, it did not work. even there is no photo on my Photo APP, the Photo library occupies 2.1GB.
I am thinking this is maybe caused by the iCloud Pohto Library (beta) that is inactive now on my phone. However i can not try it, coz i can not enable it. It tell my that "You must be logged in to iCloud to enable could photo library"

The Photo Library is where you pictures and videos are stored, and where you are able to view your pictures and video. Your phone has 2.1 GB in the Photo library because your library contains a lot of pictures and/or videos. Videos take up more space than pictures.

  • On my iphone in photo library i have no photos but in storage it says i have 663

on my iphone in photo library i have no photos but in storage it says i have 600

    Hi Bpaitin,
Go to Settings>General>Usage, and under iCloud, click on Manage Storage>click on your device, then under Backup Options, turn Photo Library off and then back on. See if that clears it up.
If it does not, reset your device (nothing will be lost): Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the Slide to Unlock screen redisplays, see if the issue is resolved.
    Cheers,

  • My iphone storage is full due to my large photo library. As I want to go on taking more photos, if I back up my phone to icloud, can I then delete all my photos from my iphone to make room for new photos?

My iphone storage is full due to my large photo library. As I want to go on taking more photos, if I back up my phone to icloud, can I then delete all my photos from my iphone to make room for new photos? Or will the next time I back up lose all those previously backed up as it is a 'new' set of data?
I just want to find the easiest and safest way of not losing all my photos while being able to take more than my iPhones storage worth as it is already full - can someone help me please? I thought icloud was the solution to not uploading my photos to the mac but I'm not sure if the way it's going is working and don't want to delete photos or lose my phone and then find out what I'm doing isn't actually storing my photos permanently. Thanks

    Hey EmilyEliza,
As you are clearly aware, it is important for you to have backups of your important data, including all of these photos you are currently keeping on your iPhone. While it is possible to use iTunes or iCloud to do backups of your iPhone, the problem becomes how to access those backups if you have deleted the photos from your iPhone. Once you have done the backup and then removed the photos from the iPhone, the only way to access the photos is by restoring the backups to the phone. See this article for information about backups made from the iPhone -
Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support
If you want to easily access the photos once they are off of the iPhone, another approach to this would be to import your photos from the iPhone into an application on your Mac, such as iPhoto. To learn how to do this, use the steps in this article -
Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or Windows PC - Apple Support
Once those photos are on your computer, it is still important to back up those photos to somewhere else, so you can be sure of their safety before removing them from the iPhone. Your Mac’s Time Machine application is one method of doing this -
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • My Photo Library says it is using 2.3 GB of storage, but I only have 30 pictures in my camera roll and nothing else.

I ran out of storage on my iPad Air, so I attempted to clean it up to make more room.  I deleted all but 30 pictures from the iPad's camera roll.  I have no other albums.  I even deleted the 'recently deleted' photos in case.  I restarted.  I turned off photo stream.  It still says that my Photo Library is using 2.3 BG and my shared Photo Stream is using 4.6 KB.  When i look st my photos on my computer (attached to the iPad with USB0 it says that my photos only take up 42.9 MB.  I just want to get all of the storage space I can.

    Any videos in Camera Roll?
Make sure you are reading GB and not MB. At the top of Usage what are the "Available" and "Used" numbers?
You should also try a Reset which could make the numbers display propperly:
From the Home screen double tap the Home button to view the multitasking bar at the bottom. Tap and hold an app at the bottom till the icons wiggle with the minus button visible. Tap the button to close all apps then tap the Home button to get back to the Home page. Press and hold the Sleep button till you see the Slide to power off message and power it off. Once powered down completely press and hold the sleep button till the Apple icon appears.
I have had an instance were I had to Restore my iPad due to photos not properly deleting from the Photo Library. Restore using a Backup which should return your 2 photos in Camera Roll. If it still doesn't fix it you'll have to Restore as new.

  • Have storage optimised with Photo Library but need more space - How do I delete photos just off my MacBook Pro and not from other devices and icloud

    Hiya,
I moved a 40GB file off my MacBook Pro to make room so that I could enable the iCloud Photo Library. I optimised the storage but during this process it used 10GB of space and so I cant now put back the file I took off my mac. I though that once I had optimised the storage I would gain space not loose it!. So i'm wondering how can I delete photos off my MacBook and not off all my devices and so I can get this 40 GB file back on ??
    Cheers

Hi, that's how it works. photos in Photo Stream are these ones that actually exist on your Camera Roll. Photo Stream is an iClous service that helps you to share photos. Just think about Dropbox or any other cloud services, isn't it that you delete a file on your computer, then found the file no longer exist on your other devices?
If you want to keep the photos while making them occupy less space, I suggest you try SafeEraser's Photo Compressor feature. It compress the photos and make it easy for you to keep them on your iPhone without losing much quality.

Best way is to restore your backup from before the problem, rebuild it and update it again
