Photo Management Issues

1) Is it possible to create a new Album in iPhoto for the iPad.
2) Can photos be Moved or Added to other albums in iPhoto for iPad?
3) Can multiple photos be added to the Camera Roll from iPhoto, or just one at a time?
4) Can iMovie access large groups of photos edited in iPhoto without saving them to the Camera Roll one by one?
5) Once I've imported a whole SD card of photos and selected favorites is there anyway to batch delete all the scratch shots that I don't want anymore?
6) Can Beamed photos be organized into other Albums in iPhoto, or do they just keep accumulating in one big mess?
Thanks for the help!

Now when I open Bridge there are several issues. The first being that the Photo Downloader will no longer actually download images. The buttons just don't respond. This is infuriating to say the least and I have not been able to find any advice on the issue. I'm using the latest versions of Camera Raw and Bridge.
Don't have 10.8 installed myself but first I would restart Bridge holding down option key and choose reset preferences. Then I would also refresh the preferences for PS itself.
Secondly, Bridge changes the colour profile of my screen. This has never happened before, so I'm assuming it has something to do with a new update. I use a monitor calibrator (ColorMunki) to set the colours for my monitor and I am not interested in having Bridge or other Adobe products interfere with this as it has been working perfectly until now. I have read everything available on Creative Suite Color Settings, however I cannot find a way to load my monitor profile into the Color settings options.
When you have a CS Suite you can set the color settings of each suite application (edit / color settings) and finally in Bridge to match the whole suite.
However you should choose a common profile (preferable AdobeRGB) and not your monitor profile you created with colormunki. This is the personal profile for your screen to match AdobeRGB.

• Color Management issues with Illustrator

Can someone help me figure out the color management issues I'm getting when printing on an Epson 3880 from Illustrator?
The image comes out severely red as evident on the face. I'm not getting the same problem when printing from Photoshop, even though I set same paper profile in printing dialog box.
I attached two printed picture (one from Photoshop CC, and one from Illustrator CC) that I took with my iphone so that you can see the printed result. Even when I try to simulate same thing using illustrator soft proofing process, the soft proof does not show me anything close to how it gets printed out. And I tried all device simulations to see if any would match it. Im using CMYK SWOP v2 for Color space in both programs.

Dougfly,
Only an hour wasted? Lucky you. Color is an incredibly complex subject. First, forget matching anything to the small LCD on the back of your camera. That's there as a basic guide and is affected by the internal jpg algorithm of your camera.
2nd, you're not really takeing a color photo with your digital camera, but three separate B&W images in a mosaic pattern, exposed thru separate red, green and blue filters. Actual color doesn't happen until that matrix is demosaiced in either your raw converter, or the in-camera processor (which relies heavily on camera settings, saturation, contrast, mode, etc.)
Having said the above, you can still get very good, predictable results in your workflow. I have a few color management articles on my website that you might find very helpful. Check out the Introduction to Color Management and Monitor and Printer Profiling. In my opinion, a monitor calibration device is the minimum entry fee if you want decent color.

• Aperture as a general photo managment tool

Hi
has any one used aperture as a general photo management tool, i mean has any body used to manage 40 gb of RAW photos on their hard drive. does any body has any tip on how to manage large volume of photos using aperture.
using the vult would only back the libarary photos and i am not sure how i can export photos to clear some harddisk space at the same time be able to access them using aperture.
is there any web site or books about "how to manage you photo library "
thanks

Jeff - I have a PB and have no issues using the external Lacie FW800 with this. What's really neat is once I have it mapped right in preferences on both the G5 and PB, I can go anywhere and still have the most updated records go with me, eg ratings etc. The problem with running dual systems is when you for example add a keyword on one system - it is written within the local system, not in the Aperture library, so it is not in the menu when used on the other system.
Also, what's totally awesome (although somewhat slower) is when I can't be bothered disconnecting the Lacie from the G5, I simple turn on the G5, grab the PB and go sit in the lounge or wherever. I can then map (through wifi) the Lacie as one of my drives and HEY PRESTO it still works as if it was hooked up (minus the faster speed, as stated above). It maybe slower but less clutter for sure.

• Photo Management Quandry

I have gone round and round trying to figure out what would be best for our family photos, and I have come to the conclusion that I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. Here are the facts:
COMPUTER
iMac (circa 2006, white body)
1GB RAM
160GB HDD
Snow Leopard
CAMERA
Canon T2i (18MP stills + 1080p video)
USES
Personal use only
Family and friends
Family Events
Kids
My two basic questions are:
1) Which photo management/editing software should we use
2) Where to store photos
About question 1 - I think I would like to stick with iPhoto for most of the work and then use Photoshop Elements for maybe 10% of the editing. I assume this is OK and a tried and true method.
About question 2 - Right now I have all of our pictures stored on the computer's hard drive, which needless to say is filling up rapidly. I have tried to move the library to an external HD connected via USB, but the performance is pretty slow and frustrating. Should I try FireWire? Would it help that much? Is part of the issue my "old" computer? Should I plan on getting a new updated model in the next year?
Any input on this would be very much appreciated. I am getting frustrated.

lets start with the version of iPhoto that you have - you posted in the iPhoto '09 forum - is that what you have?
1) Which photo management/editing software should we use
the answer you will get here is going to be iPhoto since that is why users are here - it is IMHO by far the best and most cost effective for home photo management
About question 1 - I think I would like to stick with iPhoto for most of the work and then use Photoshop Elements for maybe 10% of the editing. I assume this is OK and a tried and true method.
PSE works just fine as the external editor for iPhoto '09
2) Where to store photos
in the iPhoto library
About question 2 - Right now I have all of our pictures stored on the computer's hard drive, which needless to say is filling up rapidly. I have tried to move the library to an external HD connected via USB, but the performance is pretty slow and frustrating. Should I try FireWire?
USB should be ok but firewire would be much faster
Would it help that much? Is part of the issue my "old" computer?
Probably
Should I plan on getting a new updated model in the next year?
Probably - it wil have been five years

• Ios7 Photo app issue.

I Installed ios7 on my iPad3 and iPhone 5 & see some of the images in the Photo app don’t scale properly & cut off at the top and sometimes right side, never an issue before. You can pinch them down to fit, but they don’t stay that way. I use the iPad to highlight my graphic work and and this is a big issue for me and I would suspect others. It seems random but happens fairly frequently. . Again, same images as before and as i said, never a problem before. It seems to affect not photos as much as images such I scan, get from LOC, various other sources, work on in Photoshop or illustrator, all legit and all fine in 6.14 and earlier. Needs to be addressed. PS, other apps that show images, Photo Manager Pro, for instance, show the same images properly. Anyone else notice this? Happens on my wife's 5 as well.

For the record, just confirmed it happens to photos taken by my iPhone as well. Really hope someone at Apple reads this and runs it down and fixes it. Most annoying to have to awkwardly resize images when presenting to prospective client, or a complete stranger. :-)

• Is AIR the right platform for photo management app?

I need to build a web-enabled photo management app with the following features:
server sign-in and authentication
photos fetched from server via REST API/XML
tag, rate (i.e. 1-5 stars), and edit properties for photos, with data updated on or sync-ed with server
all the RIA UI goodies, like multi-select, drag/drop, AJAX-style auto-complete, overlay icons on thumbs,
all the photo management goodies, like fast scrolling, histograms, resizeable thumbnail
able to handle 1000s of photos in 1 album (server is on a local LAN)
One key issue is how the platform loads an album with 1000s of photos in the background, and scrolls through pages of thumbnails. I tried before to build this in Java and all the threading issues were too much for me.
I have good experience with CakePHP & MySQL and some experience with Java, but I am resigned to learning a new platform/libs. I just need to know where to invest my learning time.
Can some experienced users pipe in on whether AIR the right platform for me to build on? Should I use Javascript etc, or learn Flex?
Is there anything out there I could just build on? I'm also considering building on Yahoo YUI or Google GWT as an alternative.
thx.
m.

Let me clarify the issue of 1000s of photo. I the app would need to load thumbnails for 1000s of photos, but only open the full size photo when the thumbnail is clicked. probably 120px max dimension, pre-rendered on the server. I have tried to open 1000 thumbs in a plain html page, and the photos come quickly - as if from the local file system - but it does seem to slow the UI until everything is loaded.
Is there a way for AIR to load the thumbnails is the current "view port" immediately, and the rest in the background? YUI has an imageLoader class that does something like this. Could I use this within AIR?
The other requirement is to manage a DB of tags ratings, and other attributes for the photos, but I can't imagine that is a big challenge. right?

I try to open iphoto and it comes up with You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto. I have downloaded photo manager and it's telling me to update but it wont update...

iPhoto is Apple's included program to manage your photo's and pictures.
It receives updates over time with Software updates and new machine or iLife purchases.
When iPhoto gets updated or a newer version is used, it may alter iPhoto support files, but newer iPhoto versions usually always compatible with older files which it then updates.
If you used a newer iPhoto on your iPhoto support files, then they got altered to the newer format, older iPhoto versions can't read the older format.
Somewhere along the line you somehow got a older version of iPhoto on your computer, you need to fine the newer version of iPhoto (not this photo manager, sounds like another program)
Or somewhere along the line you used a newer iPhoto version (like on another Mac) and it altered the iPhoto support files on your older version of iPhoto.
So the key here is to find the newest version of iPhoto and use that to access your iPhoto support files.
If you didn't access your iPhoto support files from another Mac, then you should have the newer iPhoto version on your computer.
Once you find it, and get it in the Dock, you should remove the older iPhoto version from your computer to prevent this from happening again.
Lastly, if the newer version of iPhoto is somehow gone off your computer, you should be able to get a copy off the latest OS X install disk or iLife using a free program called Pacifist.
http://www.charlessoft.com/
Then you need to check for updates for iPhoto in the program itself, the current version is 9.1.2

• The Ultimate Guide to Resolving Profile and Device Manager Issues

The following article also applies to issues after re-setting the severs' hostname. It also applies to situations where re-setting the Code Signing Certifictateas described by Apple has not resolved the issue.
Hello,
I have been plagued with Profile Manager and Device Manager issues since day one.
I would like to share my experience and to suggest a way how to resolve issues such as device cannot be enrolled or Code Signing Certificate not accepted.
I shall try to be as brief as possible, just giving an overview of the steps that resolved my issues. The individual steps have been described elsewhere in this forum. For users who have purchased commercial SSL certs the following may not apply.
In my view many of these issues are caused by missing or faulty certificates. So let us first touch on the very complex matter of certificates.
Certificates come in many flavours such as CA (Certificate Authority), Code Signing Certificate, S/MIME and Server Identification.
(Mountain?) Lion Server creates a so-called Intermediate CA certificate (IntermediateCA_hostname_1") and Server Identification Certificate ("hostname") when it installs first. This is critical for the operation of many server functionalities, including Open Direcory. These certs together with the private/public keys can be found in your Keychain. Profile and Device Manager may need a Code Signing Certificate.
The most straightforward way to resolve the Profile Manaher issues is in my view to reset the server created certicates.
The bad news is that this procedure involves quite a few steps and at least 2 hours of your precious time because it means creating a fresh Direcory Master.
I hope that I have not forgotten to mention an important step. Readers' comments and addenda are welcome.
I shall outline a sensible strategy:
1. Clone your dysfunctional server to an external harddrive (SuperDuper does a reliable job)
2. Start the server fom the clone and shut down ALL services.
3. It may be sensible to set up a root user access.
4. Back-up all user data such as addess book, calendar and other data that you *may* need to set up your server.
5. Open Workgroup Manager and export all user and workgroup accounts to the drive that you using to re-build your server (it may cause problems if you back-up to an external drive).
6. Just in case you may also want to back-up the Profile Manager database and erase user profiles:
In Terminal (this applies to Lion Server - paths may be diferent in Mountain Lion !)
Backup: sudo pg_dump -U _postgres -c device_management > $HOME/device_management.sql
Erase database:
sudo /usr/share/devicemgr/backend/wipeDB.sh
7. Note your Directory (diradmin) password for later if you want to re-use it.
8. Open Open Server Admin and demote OD Master to Standalone Directory.
9. In Terminal delete the old Certificate Authority
sudo rm -R /var/root/Library/Application\ Support/Certificate\ Authority/
This step is crucial because else re-building you OD Master will fail.
9. Go back to Server Admin and promote the Standalone Directory to OD Master. You may want to use the same hostname.
10. When the OD Master is ready click on Overview and check that the LDAP and Keberos Realm reflect your server's hostname.
11. Go back to Workgroup Manager and re-import users and groups.
NOTE: passwords are not being exported. I do not know how to salvage user passwords. (Maybe passwords can be recovered by re-mporting an OD archive - comments welcome! ).
12. Go to Server App and reset passwords and (not to forget) user homefolder locations, in particular if you want to login from a network account!
If the home directory has not been defined you cannot login from a network account.
13. You may now want to restore Profile Manager user profiles in Terminal. Issue the following commands:
sudo serveradmin stop devicemgr
sudo serveradmin start postgres
sudo psql -U _postgres -d device_management -f $HOME/device_management.sql
sudo serveradmin start devicemgr
14. You can now switch back on your services, including Profile Manager.
In Profile Manager you may have to configure Device Management. This creates a correct Code Signng Certicate.
15. Check the certificate settings in Server App -> Hadware -> Settings-> SSL Certificates.
16. Check that Apple Push Notifications are set.(you easily check if they are working later)
17. You may want to re-boot OS Server from the clone now.
18. After re-boot open Server App and check that your server is running well.
19. Delete all profiles in System Preferences -> Profiles.
19. Login to Profile Manager. You should have all users and profiles back. In my experience devices have to be re-enrolled before profiles can be pushed and/or devices be enrolled. You may just as well delete the displayed devices now.
20. Grab one of your (portable) Macs that you want to enrol and go to (yourhostname)/mydevices and install the server's trust profile. The profile's name should read "Trust Profile for...) and underneath in green font "Verified".
21. Re-enrol that device. At this stage keep your finger's crossed and take a deep breath.
22. If the device has been successfully enrolled you may at last want to test if pushing profiles really works. Login to Profile Manager as admin, select the newly enrolled device. Check that Automatic Push is enabled (-> Profile -> General). Create a harmless management profile such as defining the dock's position on the target machine. (Do not forget to click SAVE at the end - this is easily missed here). If all is well Profile Manager will display an active task (sending) and the dock's position on the target will have changed in a few seconds if you are on a LAN (Note: If sending seems to take forever: check on the server machine and/or on your router that the proper ports are open and that incoming data is not intercepted by Little Snitch or similar software).
Note: if you intend to enrol an Apple iPhone you may first need to install the proper Apple Configuration software.
Now enjoy Profile and Device Manager !
Regards,
Twistan

HI
1. In Action profiles, logon to system and recheck correcion are available in action definition as well in condition configuration and the schedule condition is also maintained. but the display is not coming(i.e in the worklist this action is not getting displayed).
You can check the schedule condition for the action and match the status values...or try recreating the action with schedule condition again....for customer specific ....copy the standard aciton with ur zname and make a schedule condition and check the same.
2, In suppport team of incident when i give individual processor it throwing a warning that u r not the processor. but when i give org unit it is working perfectly. Could anyone guide on this.
You need to have the empolyee role for BP ..goto BP and got here dropdown for ur bp and choose role Employee and then enter ur userid
also make sure that u have the message processing role
Hope it clarifies ur doubt and resolve ur prob

How can I access my parents iCloud account remotely to assist with photo management and printing?

I tried that without any luck. I was hoping I could get Apple to reset it for me or delete the account so I could recreate it or at least tell me what is listed as my birth date, the security question answer.

• Power Mac G5 DP1.8GHz - Bad Logic Board or Power Management Issue?

I have a Power Mac G5 DP1.8GHz/1.5GB/80GB which I bought non-working. It has not yet been disassembled or examined by a certified tech. This is it's issue (which replicates): the computer powers on. It makes a single warning tone, then the LED flashed at least 15 times (too fast to count). Then the posting chord is heard. Hard drive spins up. Then nothing (no video). Won’t boot from any disk. I have changed the RAM and tested the RAM banks with known-to-be-good RAM from another DP1.8GHz G5. The warning tone stopped once or twice after this switch, but then it didn’t chime. I changed the PRAM battery, but not with as new one. However, after installing the used one and then resetting the PMU, it displayed video briefly for the first time. While installed in the other 1.8GHz G5, the hard drive was formatted, given a clean install of OS X 10.4.11, and then moved into this computer where is never mounts. The computer is not accessible through TDM.
Do I have a bad logic board? Bad CPUs? A power managment issue? A RAM issue?

Through my own trial and error troubleshooting, I have found the CPUs to be in good working order and the logic board passes the Apple Service Diagnostic every time. Despite the installation of numerous pairs of modules that worked in another DP1.8GHz, the computer has a RAM issue-it gives the "no good RAM" tone most of the time when it powers up (after a PMU reset it does not). Also the computer boots from disk or into Open Firmware but the disk utility can't see either hard drive so I may have a bad SATA controller.

• Photo Management for old (import) & new pictures

Below is a proposal for organising my photo management system.
I'm a hobbiest photographer with over 30 years of pictures to file. I have read extensively, including this forum and sort best practice to developed a plan to do achieve an organised scalable system.
I would appreciate sharing of experience by providing comments on my suggested plan of action and questions I raise below.
My Objective:
Organise and manage existing legacy photos and provide a system for future photos that is not tied into specific system or vendor. For example where possible Metadata free from vendor specific format or database.
Background:
My collection consists of many photos in over 50 folders, these are:
a) Scanned picture that are now JPGs,
b) Shot JPG,
c) Raw (new and existing).
I files my pictures on my PC & external back up copy.
I file: /my pictures/<YYYY>_<MM>_<Location_Event> for example: /my pictures/2013_04_Yorkshire_Family_Weekend.
On some of my digital pictures I have included the Metadata using Google Picasa v3. Most of my scanned pictures have no Metadata as yet.
I own and aim to use Lightroom 4 to do Post Production and photo filing and management whilst also continuing to use Google Picasa for viewing & Face Recognition (at least until I feel fully confident in Lr).
Suggested plan of attack:
Stage 1)
Add "My Picture" folder, including sub folders to Lightroom Library, Standard View.
Stage 2)
Continue with /my pictures/<YYYY>_<MM>_<Location_Event>
For example: /my pictures/2013_04_Yorkshire_Family_Weekend.
Stage 3)
Use Lr to apply to both existing and new photos file name format as follows: <My Initials>_<YYYYMMDD>_<Key_Words Inc_Location_Event_Description>_<sequence xxxx>
For example:RB_20130420_Peru_Cusco_Holiday_Shots_0001
NB: Regarding Version Control for RAW I will use Lr inc use of "Virtual Copies", for Jpeg I will use additional field for Developed JPEGs of <vX>
For example:RB_20130420_Peru_Cusco_Holiday_Shots_0001_v01.jpg
Stage 4)
Manually use Lr to add Metadata & Ratings to all pictures to date.
Metatdata: Include "My Name" to all pictures, "Date" by Windows folder, "Keyword" by folder, "Additional Keyword" to 3* and above.
Rating: 1&2* no action required, 3*+ maybe further editing if time permits.
Stage 5)
Run "Save Metadata to file" in Lr. This will run Metadata to file for JPG and to XMP side car for RAW files.
Stage 6)
Import new shots to new folder using "/my pictures/<year><month number><event>" structure. As they are in sub folder they will be included automatically to Lr library.
Stage 7)
Create JPG in same folders as RAWs for Developed Photos.
Stage 8)
Back up "My Photos" and Lr dbase on regular basis as per Lr best practice.
Questions:
1) Is Lr more powerful than Google Picasa for Renaming File & Adding Metadata?
2) Once I "Save Meta Data to Photo" in Lr will I be able to access it in Google Picasa?
3) Can I automate the Importing of new shots to Lr and have it maintain / build upon my existing file structure?
4) Any recommendations for Keyword Schema to include in Metadata?
5) Does my approach above seem sensible?

Honestly, if your goal is to have metadata that is not tied into a specific system or vendor, then here's what I would do:
I would not put any effort at all into organizing your folders (or improving the organization of the folders), or renaming files, as I think your time is better spent on keywords. In my opinion, the benefits of keyword organizing are many; in addition, without you putting any effort into reorganizing your folders, you can also search for you photos by date inside Lightroom using Lightroom tools regardless of the folder structure (and you can search this way inside of any other photographic management software I have used as well, regardless of the folder structure).
In Lightroom assign whatever keywords and metadata are appropriate, and then instruct Lightroom to write the metadata to the files. There are two ways to do this, one is Ctrl-S, and the second is to turn on the option in Preferences that does this automatically (Edit->Catalog Settings->Metadata) Once the metadata has been written by Lightroom, you now have metadata that can be read by any photographic software (and even all major operating systems) that I know of. Having keywords in the file name is redundant, it doesn't help you find photos and faster but it does require extra work; and there is a limit to the number of characters you can have in a path\filename.
Another point ... don't use Lightroom collections or pick flags as part of this "metadata that is system and vendor independent", as Lightroom does not write this information to the files.
You ask for Keyword schema, but without knowing what your photo's subject matter is, there's no way I could give any advice.

• Updating photo management strategy with add'l laptop?

Hello -
I have added a new MacBook Air to a set of computers - old MacBook, older iMac. The iMac hard drive bit the dust earlier this year so it has a brand new 750 GB hard drive with Mavericks installed. That's the background to wanting to updating my photo management / storage strategy now that I have an additional computer.
I keep my iPhoto library on an external drive connected to my desktop (the iMac) and have since the beginning - that baby is about 350 GB and isn't updated b/c now I've had photos on the Macbook and don't want to get into the same habit with the new MB Air. I take a lot of photos, decent amount of video but it's all personal, not my profession. My camera shoots with 10 - 15 MB size per photo though, so it adds up. I use SmugMug to share my photos (and online backup strategy) - the process on a good day is to pull the photos off my camera, do any editing, upload the ones I want to share to Smugmug, then save/store the originals.
I'd like to consolidate now that I've got a new computer in the mix - and storage drives keep keep getting bigger and less expensive. ;-)
My current thinking is to get a NEW big external storage drive and set it up to be ONLY a repository for photos and video. I'd likely use that storage drive with a main iPhoto library (or whatever software I use) on the desktop, especially since it's now on an updated OS.
What I'm debating is whether I should go with the larger storage of a desktop storage drive - or go with the portable with the largest storage capability just in case I *ever* want to take it and use it with the laptop (now or in the future)?
Does that seem like a sound strategy? Thoughts? Thanks!
P.S. A good thing to add is that the iMac has only Firewire 800 available, unfortunately (and USB obviously). The MacBook Air has thunderbolt. If I use a Thunderbolt storage drive on the iMac it would need a converter (which I think will slow it down - but is that slower than the usual Firewire 800 speeds?) If I use a Firewire 800 storage drive with the iMac, I'd need a converter if I went to use it with the Macbook Air - not ideal, but not going to happen very often.

1. You need two drives: one to hold the Photos and one to be a back up for that.
2.

Well, as you need both, I'd get one of each, and keep the portable outside the house - even in your car.
SmugMug is excellent as off-site storage (as is Flickr) for your photos. But if whatever you choose to manage your apps has a library of any form, then you need to also back that up. And everything pretty much uses a Library - Picas, iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom etc - of some form or other.
The thunderbolt to Firewire adaptor will not make an appreciable difference in performance. But frankly, I'd go for USB, I'm not sure of the long term prospects for Firewire.
