Photo Manipulation

My friend and I recently started a photography business (mostly wedding photography)... We both are pretty handy with editing techniques, but we have run out of good ideas. Here are things we have done:
- blur background
- fade borders
- soft focus
- focal black and white
- chalk & charcoal
- colored pencil
- create black and white & old fashioned
- create black and white with one or more pieces in color
- clone objects to remove unwanted images in photographs
We need more ideas on what to do with photographs... I have Photoshop Elements 4.0
Any ideas for us or things you like to do with photos would be greatly appreciated :)

If it's done well, "Out of Bounds" frame techniques.

  • Need some advice on a photo manipulation project

I am working on a photoshop manipulation project. Just an Idea I thought about that will be using turtles. What I am wanting to do is make the turtle's shell shiny and colored like that of a car. I have attempted this by using the quick selection tool to select the shell then adding color and using bevel in blending mode. This did not come out quite right. I have also thought of removing parts from actually car pictures and warping them into shape. This would take some time to do. Is there any other ways to do this? I have done a couple of photo manipulations before, but I'm a little bit stumped on this one. I am fairly new to this, but have a little bit of knowledge. I have provided the picture I am wanting to use so you can see. Thank you in advance for your help.

    Just to elaborate,
The shape and look of the outside of a car is defined by A) its colour and B) the reflections of the light sources on its surface.
It's relatively easy to change the colour of the shell of the turtle, but making it look reflective is much harder (I didn't do a very good job myself), especially if you also want to keep the textures of the shell somewhat intact.
To light the shell you need to consider what the light sources are that are hitting the shell when it is outside. Reflections of the sky and clouds should be brighter, reflections of the ground should be darker.
In my attempt, I overlaid a landscape picture, warped to roughly follow the shape of the car, then played around with blend modes and opacity and colouration to achieve the above effect. (Although the "specular" highlights could stand to be brought up a bit more). In practice, making this look realistic is probably beyond my skill set.
Then I added the lightning bolt and wheels for fun.

  • Photo Manipulation RAW, JPEG or TIFF?

    Hello
I have been looking at some absolutely wonderful surreal art done with Photoshop.
Question: are all the original photos in these works shot in RAW format?
In other words, are only RAW formats can be manipulated to create art, or can it be done with JPEG or TIFF?
    Thanks

Any image can be manipulated but more can be done with a raw file because it has more data to work with.

  • IPhone Photos manipulation

I want to alter a photo using my iPhone only. I want to alter a picture in my camera roll without altering the original.
I managed to duplicate a picture ONE TIME, and then haven't been able to get that choice menu for duplicating ever again :( In addition, the picture I thought I had duplicated never materialized in any of my albums, including the camera roll.
Apparently I need very specific, step-by-step instructions for getting from point A to point B.
Please advise with very specific instructions if you have the time, and I thank you greatly in advance.

Actually, I think that this is a very capable phone in this area and that there is no need for downloading any apps...I simply need help harnessing all that the phone itself has to offer.

  • Use PS 5 can't use on 3 newer pcs. What's equilivant with same layers & photo manipulations as 5.

I have photoshop 5. I took classes at a local collage over 10 years ago on how to use it, I learned so much. My classmates had a more generic version.  I had the more expensive, high end version compared to the class. I really don't want to lose the ability's I had in 5. The instructor was able to show me some great functions in the 5-pro version, which I use, but I don't remember which functions those were.  I just can't afford the expensive pro version and Window stopped supporting my PC long ago and I've had to save things to floppy's because that PC didn't have a CD/DVD slot.  I want to use faster PC, my duct tape and rubber bands just are not holding my unit together anymore. I moved away from great teacher and the course not offered near me now. I could upgrade to just XP if needed and purchase a used version but I'm concerned about purchasing something used. Could someone spell-out for a low tech lady ...what I could purchase that will have the 5-pro functions and what I would lose if I discontinue it for your recomdation?

If you are looking for a newer computer, I would stay away from Windows XP as Microsoft just abandoned that version. Find windows 7 if you can.
Frankly from what you wrote, any newer computer would run rings around the old system including majority of the laptops. Almost all computers now come with a DVD drive, rarely CD but it is possible. External DVD drives can be had for under $100 easy. All newer computer have usb ports so external drives are easy to find and are relatively cheap.
If you can afford $10 a month subscribing to the photography program will get you the latest version of photoshop and lightroom.
Your alternative (speaking perpetual licensing) would be photoshop elements. You would be lacking some of the features, but would work for now for all the basics.
A main difference for you anyway would be elements can be used on your system until you run into the same situation you are in now.
Whereas the subscription is done 30 days after last payment. But it can be reactivated at a later date and it is always the latest version. Therefore with the subscription as long as you pay it will never be obsolete.

  • Desktop photo manipulation?

    Howdy all,
I have the widescreen display and I understand that the only way I'll be able to see the whole picture is if I center it or stretch it. Or tile, but who likes that? I'm wondering if there's a way to move the picture up or down to see more of the top or bottom as dictated by my preferences?
    Thanks in advance,
    Brian

    Back up all data.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
              Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
              Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following items to the Desktop, if they exist:
              Application Support/Dock/desktoppicture.db
              Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the items you moved to the Desktop back where they came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the items.

  • Not SURE HOW TO TRANSFER PHOTOS  FROM A "MAC CD" FOR USE A PC

I didn't expect a problem, but have run into one this weekend.
Looking thru old photos, I came across a photo disk from Ritz Camera containing pix from 2006. Wanted to pass along the pix (along with other photos and documents) to a friend who has a PC.
After burning all the data onto a fresh CD, I tested the disk on a PC and found all the other files could be opened except for the items from the original Ritz CD.
Those items included three separate folders, nested within a single fourth one.
The folders were labeled "Ritz Documentation" . . . "Preview" and "Pictures".
The last two appeared to contain identical JPG items, but I left them all intact.
I'm not particularly PC savvy, and the owner of the PC computer has departed, so I had to wing it on my own. The only thing close to a photo manipulation application I could find on the PC was Picassa, which located the disk and files in the CD drive and was able to read the three other individual items, but could only recognize the three Ritz files. When I clicked on them it said they were "invalid" documents.
Any idea on what I'm doing wrong?
I know the files were readable by the owner's previous PC in 2004, so assumed they would be now, as well. I also still can see clearly the copies I transfered to my Mac and did nothing to them, except drag the entire original folder from my Mac to the new CD.
If the files can't be copied this way, would it make any more sense to transfer all the files directly from the Ritz CD to the PC and add the other 3 files from the CD I created . . . then transfer them all to a new CD for burning?
Sounds convoluted and time consuming, but I need to complete this project today, so am ready to try anything.
    Any insight or suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

Sory, I can't find the name of the MacUser who steered me onto the right path, but do think I remember thanking him via e-mail.
If I'm mistaken, thanks a bunch. I finally finished transferring all the photos onto a CD. Actually completed one project , which I was able to test on a PC.
Have run into a second, smaller one on the current project, which I I think I probably should post separately.

  • Looking for an app that will edit photos like Skitch

This is probably the wrong place to put this but maybe I can get help with finding a better than app like Skitch for photo manipulating.
Skitch is close but there are a few things I don't like and find it hard to use for my purpose.
I like to be able to change file name, adding arrows with narrative, and resize using pixel count and not percent.
An example would be FastStone Image viewer for a PC. Actually this has much more than I need but it is a good program.
    Thanks

What system is your MacBook currently using?
Some of the titles formerly available had not been updated to later OS X systems, and a few that I liked, do not appear to be available anymore from their authors source pages to download.
One I liked for a few years, went by the odd name 'ToyViewer for Mac, version 5.1.1' - free - & was in a 6.5GB download zip file. I saved the file but it was said to be for Leopard 10.5.x and a different one at the time was available for Tiger 10.4.11. Somewhere I probably still have a zip for the earlier Tiger version 4.x. in an archive.
There may be something out there that isn't a high-end image editor or image manipulator, at a fair price. Names like Acorn, Pixelmator, Graphic Converter, and then there's Gimp... are out there; plus a monthly fee to use some photoshop?
    see: image editor free= https://www.google.com/#q=mac+os+x+image+editor+free
Years ago, I'd found I can resize, edit, rotate and whatever on the desktop of my almost antique Mac in the Finder, using screenshots. Also to view an image, I can open a browser (mine go nowhere on launch) and drop in the image; then pull the window larger or smaller and the image fits that size automatically. I can screen capture in Finder. And the saved captures are .jpg since I changed the default, because .png did nothing for me.
That method plus  'ToyViewer for Mac' (leopard version, may work in snow leopard) has worked fine for me. Beyond my needs, actually. And I've seldom used the included Image Capture application in the OS X, and manually save images from digital camera into folders, so I avoid iPhoto's intervention and storage ideas totally. Even though it is installed.
If I were in the area, I'd give you a copy of the zip for ToyViewer v 5.1.1. (Maybe it won't work in SL10.6.8.) It can do more than expected for what was a free license application by an author in japan. His page is gone...
PS: yes, the system default viewer, Preview, can do quite a bit.
And so do screencapture keyboard shortcuts in Finder.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Need to prep some still photos for doc project & don't have photoshop

My producer just sent me some photos to use but they are way too hires for Final Cut and also some need to be rotated and cropped. Usually I use photoshop for this but haven't upgraded to the new version and the old version won't work with OS 10.5 so what can I use? Does Final Cut studio include software that would help me do some basic photo manipulation? I have never used Motion but it seems way too complicated for what I need to do.
Can I use iPhoto or will that compromise my picture quality in some way?
    Thanks!

    GraphicConverter.
    On Apple Downloads: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/imaging_3d/graphicconverter.html,
Or search for it on versiontracker.com or lemkesoft.com
It is fully functional unlicensed, but well worth the money.

  • IPhoto 5 album names are present; photos are missing

One month ago I installed Mac OS X (10.5.4) on my iBook G4 to resolve issues with my browser and hotmail. Today after having loaded new photos into iPhotos within the last month, I entered iPhotos and found the last two years of photos missing. The album names are there but no photos appear to the right when I click on the album name for photos imported from March 2006 to present. In fact the right side picture viewing area is grayed out as are the photo manipulation icons on the bottom of the screen. I had no iPhotos problems since purchasing my iBook G4 in February 2005 until now shortly after the OS upgrade. Any suggestions?
I have viewed other similar posts but those circumstances are slightly different from mine.

    Brian
The database becomes corrupted from two principle causes:
    1. The app is interrupted in the act of writing to the database - by a crash or force quit for instance
    2. User activity in the iPhoto Library Folder - moving or renaming things.
If iPhoto Library Manager is not fully rebuilding then it suggests that your main db is so corrupted that it's not writing out to the Albumdata.xml file correctly. The only solution to that is to restore from a back up or start over new.
What version of iPhoto are you using? This is the iPhoto 08 forum, the original poster is referring to v5 and the instructions for starting over are different.

  • Finding photos in the catalog

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/lightroom/using/WS1C348D44-4A02-48d5-940C-FBBF047594CB.html

I have re-opened an existing Catalog, all media has reloaded, but none of my development settings have remained intact. What have I  done wrong? After I was happy with all the photo manipulation, I output the project as a catalog and assumed that all my settings for each manipulated shot would be intact. Does this mean that I will have to go back and redo all of my files? Please tell me not! Please someone help!  :  (

  • Turning a series of still photos into an animation in CS5?

I have taken a number of photos of a sporting event using the sport/burst mode on my DSLR. I would like to turn some of the 5-10 shot series of photos into animation(s). I have CS5 but not AfterEffects, etc.
I'm really hoping there is a straight-forward method of doing this. All I use PS for is photo manipulation. Heresy, I know.
    Any advice?

I believe in CS5 the video animations was part of the extended version. The standard version did not support animations. It may have been able to do a few things with gif files, but I don't recall.

  • Suggested programs to resize photos in MacBook Pro w/retina?

I am new to apple, I have a macbookpro with retina and need to know what software to download in order to resize pictures.
    Thanks.

The pictures will originally be where?
Have you visited the App Store and considered the iPhoto app (part of iLife). It is the "official" app for  photo manipulation, can handle a wide variety of input devices, allow a reasonable range of editing and manipulation, and lets you print, mail, etc.

  • Aperture vs photo shop vs paint shop pro(

I'm a new Mac user..... on my PC I've used both Photoshop (harder to use) and Paint Shop Pro easier but still a lot of options). I'm not a professional photographer but I take a lot of pictures and enjoy enhancing them.... more then just taking the red eye out or slightly adjusting the colors. So I'm looking for some photo manipulation software that is deeper then just fixing your photos but not quite as complicated as Photo Shop is. Is Aperture the way I want to go?
Does anyone have any suggestions for me or reviews I can read?
    Thanks, Susan

Hi Susan. I'm an experienced Photoshop user, but I'm using Aperture 2.0 for more and more of my post-processing of images that do not require masking. My workflow using Aperture for whole-image adjustments is faster and, with 65,000+ photos, the savings in hard drive space vs Photoshop will be huge.
I'm learning Aperture bass ackwards, in the sense that I've been drawn into its image processing abilities before learning how to use it for managing my collection.
Be aware that Aperture really hammers your hardware, especially the video card. Download the trial version to see if it will work well with your computer system.

  • Trying to create "popup" photo scenes

Hello!  I found a photoshop roadmap tutorial but seem to be having some issues with this particular thing I want to do and was hoping adobe tv or other, had a better tutorial.  Here is a link to the tutorial, since I'm not exactly sure what I'm trying to ask for, just what I want to do.
    http://photoshoptutorials.ws/photoshop-tutorials/photo-manipulation/create-a-scene-with-po pup-photos-in-photoshop.html
I will check periodically to see if anyone is familiar with this technique, making "popup" pictures.  Landscape image of grass and a tree, where the tree like pops up out of the rest of the picture that was laid flat.

The tutorial is explaining pretty much everything, so I'm not sure what you hope to get by just posting a blanket thread basically saying "I have no clue." This sounds more like a general lack of PS knowledge, so for what it's worth, perhaps start by reading the help? And not to put too fine a point to it, tutorials can't teach you creativity, either. If you don't have the slightest idea how to conceptualise the whole thing, then you have an even longer way ahead of you... (yeah, I know this all sounds harsh).
