Photo migration

I recently went from an Imac G5 to an iMac C2D.
1) Some of my photos seem to be corrupted.
2) When I click on a thumbnail another photo pops up full screen.
3) When I click some OTHER thumbnails I get a full screen exclamation point.
Then there are many photos that show just fine.
Any thoughts?
.

raygun:
How did you move your photos to the iMac C2D? The correct way is to copy the iPhoto Library folder/package from the Pictures folder on the G5 to the Pictures folder on the C2D. If you've done that and it's still messed up, try copying it again, replacing the current library on the C2D. Once you get the library in place and before running iPhoto on it download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. Now launch iPhoto and see if it won't display the thumbnails correctly.
If it's still messed up try rebuilding the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Photoshop/Elements to Revel Photo Migration Problem!

What happened to my Photoshop/element photos? They were supposedly migrated, but I don't see them! I have no albums in my Revel account.I had a paid subscriiption and it was cancelled back in or around February, and told that the photos would be moved over to REVEL...Can anyone help me to get them back?

First, thanks Pattie for following up with me. I am going to check my backed up hard drives to see if my photoshop materials are on them. It will take me a few days, as I have only small amounts of time to research it at this time. maybe a break will come in a day or two for a determination.

    Michael-
Is it possible you logged into Photoshop.com with a different email, or is it possible that you did not set up your Elements to sync with Photosho.com? These are the two main reasons users can not find their files.
The Photoshop.com account created in 2009 with the email you use to log in to this forum has no files in it, and therefore, nothing migrated to the Revel account with the same login. You do have a Revel account with the same login, but it is also empty since nothing migrated.

  • Music and photo migration issues, help!

I just bought a new Macbook Pro 15.4". I previously had the Powerbook G4 1.67 17". I ran the Migration Assistant and my Applications and hard drive folders of work copied over fine. However, my music, photos, and desktop preferences did not copy over. Any help?
I did a quick search on the forums and did not see an answer to this dilema.
    thanks,
    andy.

    this is what i did
    1. connect an ethernet cable between the macbookpro and powerboook (or through a router)
    2. On the desktop
    a.go
    b.connect to server
    3. Find the ip address of your powerbook
    4. "Connect"
    5. Find all music and pictures and transfer
    Or....
Plug a firewire/ethernet cable from your macbookpro to your powerbook and when you turn on your powerbook hold the letter "T" until it becomes an accessible hard drive to your macbookpro. Then extract the files you need! Enjoy

  • HT4796 I completed a migration of my music and photos from a PC to my new mac.  I have an error in music library that it can't find original files.  Photos migrated fine.  Where did the original files go?

I completed the migration of my music an dphotos files from a PC to my new imac.  Both transferred initally and I even synced my ipad with the imac thereby transferring most of the music to my ipad.  However now itunes says the music isn't available because it can't find the original music files.  How can i find the original files? I am getting the same error on my pc too.

They aren't in your user Music folder? Have You tried Spotlight?

  • Help with photo migration / conversion

    Greetings smart Mac folks.
I just bought a new mac book to replace an old G3. I used the migration assistant to move into the new machine. IPhoto wants to convert the old Tiger pics to Leopard iPhoto 08 pics.
It hangs with various numbers of pics yet to be processed. It hangs for ever with both processors showing maxed out in the activity monitor floating bar. It's done this repeatedly.
Anybody have an idea what's going on, or how to get it to finish it's job?
I've done it with only iPhoto running, after restarts and permissions repairs.
    Thanks for thinking.

Assuming that you still have your old iPhoto library on your G3 (and that it is working well there - if not copy it and rebuild it there first) trash the iPhoto library on your MB and drag the iPhoto library from the G3 to the pictures folder on the MB and launch iPhoto - hopefully that will work better than migration assistant did

  • Would I be able to migrate to new Photos app from Aperture 2.x ?

Although I've been trying to keep up on upgrading HW and SW, I have some old Aperture libraries, but all under Aperture 2.x.
Does anybody knows if Photos would take Aperture 2.x libraries?
If not, does that mean I need to rush and buy Aperture 3 before it is taken out of the Mac App Store?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I contacted Apple Support with the same question.
First level support tech told me it "would be fine", should work, "probably be okay" under repeated questions about how certain he was.  I asked to be transferred to Pro Apps technical support. This guy understood my dilemma. I cannot, and frankly should not, have to justify paying for Aperture 3.6 at this juncture, considering it will be discontinued. But, I want to be certain that my Aperture 2.X libraries will migrate to Photos.  I no longer require the editing power of Aperture, but of course, do not want to lose access to my thousands of photos in Aperture 2.0.
It was as if this tech in Pro, had not been asked this question before. He consulted "senior" support reps and still was not able to definitively say.
1.) Recommendations Apple has:  Bite the bullet and pay for Aperture 3.6. Be certain that way.
2.) Join the Public Beta program (new, separate partition)  and "try" Photos migration.  I can't do this because of hardware constraints.  Another external hard drive would cost as much as the software for example.
3.) Take my Aperture libraries on a backup drive to an Apple store and ask them to update them to Aperture 3.6 format.   <  This alone tells me there is an update process and a difference in the database organization and perhaps foretells that migration from 2.X will not work.
Apple is supposed to get back to me with a definitive answer.  I am frankly not surprised as most manufacturers assume users, especially "pro" users will keep up to date and Aperture 2.X is, what, five years old?
Will repost when I hear back from pro support.

  • HT204476 Can I delete my iPhoto Library after migrating to Photos?

My iPhoto Library is about 450 GB in size. This morning I migrated it to Photos. After a reboot my Mac started complaining that I have no disk space left (I have a 1 TB drive in my MacBook Pro). It appears that the Photos migration process duplicated my iPhoto Library and I now have two photo libraries, each measuring 450 GB, based on looking at the Finder's Info windows for each library. But I understand there's some fancy, convoluted new file storage methodology being used with the new Photos library, so I'm not clear on precisely where my actual, precious photo files are.
My compulsion is to just delete the old iPhoto Library, since I've migrated to Photos and I won't be using iPhoto anymore. But there's this niggly feeling that Apple had made it more complicated than that, that I now must have an iPhoto Library and a Photos library taking up space on my hard drive and totally confusing my file management practices. I was hoping this transition would be easy, clear, and safe but Apple has made it complicated and worrisome for some reason.
Bottom line: can I delete my old iPhoto Library? Or would this be a catastrophic action?

I have the exactly the same problem. But when upgrading it created in total three libraries?!!!? This is very unlike Apple to do this. What to do?

  • How do i get my photos out of a backup thats in the cloud onto my IOS 8 I phone 5S

    Hi,
I just upgraded to a I phone 5S from an I Phone 5. I backed up the I Phone 5 and returned it to Verizon and received the 5S.
I didn't think to worry about doing a photo migration because the I Phone 5S came with IOS 7. What happened was I Tunes went ahead and put IOS 8 on the 5S which is ok but now the 900 + photos that were in my photo stream on my I Phone 5 did not transfer to my IOS 8 I Phone 5S.
BUT...I still have the original backup of the I Phone 5 with all of the pictures on it in I Cloud and a copy of it on my Computer.
Is there a way to get those photos back out of that backup and on to the I Phone 5S or just get them onto my computer? There is also a back up of my original I Phone 5 on my computer also. I always back up all of my devices in 2 places.
Can I use my daughters I Pad Mini running IOS 7 to put that I Phone 5 backup onto to get the pictures back & then restore her I Pad Mini back to a backup I would have created before doing the above or is there another way of doing it. My daughters I Pad Mini is only 16GB  and my I Phone 5S is 32GB.
Any Ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I can't replace a lot of those pictures.
    Thanks in advance
    Steve

    Hi..
    Thanks for the reply..
My original I Phone 5 was running IOS 6.12
My I phone 5S currently runs IOS 8..When I upgraded it, it had IOS 7 on it which made the I Photo app compatible with everything below IOS 8...( which the photo app is not compatible with ) so I just connected the I Phone 5S to my computer and thinking the new phone had IOS 7 on it that these was nothing to worry about..I thought all 900 + pictures in the photo stream would transfer but somewhere in the process, I Tunes decides to just go and install IOS 8 which requires that you run a " Photo Migration App" to transfer photos from IOS 7 & below. The problem was is that I didn't want IOS 8 on my new 5S so I thought I wouldn't have to do that part..
Anyway the phone emerged with IOS 8 on it and the only photos that remained were the ones that were actually on the phone..The 900 + I had in the stream didn't transfer because the Photos that works on IOS 7 and below isn't compatible with IOS 8..I guess you have to use the photo migration app that comes with IOS 8 & I phone 6..But I didn't ask to upgrade to IOS 8...It just did it on it's own!
I still have the I Phone 5 Back up that I did just before giving it back to Verizon but if I try to restore the I Phone 5S running IOS 8 those photos in the stream will not go back on the phone because IOS 8 isn't compatible with the I Photos" that ran on IOS 7 and below..
So I have an I Pad mini that runs IOS 7..should I try and erase it...and put that I Phone 5 backup on it and pray the photos that were in the stream come back on it so I can transfer them back to my computer...then erase the I pad mini again and restore it using it's original backup that I have on the computer and the in the cloud?
I know this sounds confusing but I'm at a loss as to what to do..This is what I found ...http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201386

  • How can I start anew with Photos and clear the (minimal) stuff it has uploaded

I've about had it up to here with this new Photos scheme. I reorganised my Aperture libraries on both my iMac and MBA in preparation for this, delayed turning Photos on for a couple of days until I thought everything was ready based upon the limited advice that was out there, and then got stuck in an endless loop of "uploading" and "preparing" every time I opened Photos. There are 19,975 images in my Aperture library on the iMac. I was stuck at Uploading at anywhere between that number and 19,000 with no progress after hours of waiting. I tried all the tricks mentioned here including re booting, restarting the app, repairing/rebuilding the database, killing the "cloudd" process, etc.today Today when I restarted Photos, it now said I had 23,775 images to upload- 4000
more than I have-and of course it got stuck there, like it has for the last week.
I copied the previous Aperture library (pre Photos migration)back to my iMac and opened it in Aperture. Thankfully, all the photos I had taken on my iPhone this week during this Photos clusterphuck transition were in the Aperture Stream so I didn't lose any of those. I'm willing to give this whole thing one more shot. So  i need some advice. How can I start anew with Photos and clear the (minimal) stuff it has uploaded (about 6000 of 19,000 images in the last 7 days) ? If I simply delete the Photos.photolibrary file will that do the trick and lt me start a new fresh library using?

It is hard to say from your post, why the migration did not succeed in your case.
by "stuck on upload" do you mean, you opened the Aperture library in Photos, and Photos converted it to a Photo Library, and then the upload to iCloud Photo Library did hang?  Or did already the upgrade to the Photo Library fail?
If you want the Aperture library to upload to iCloud Photo Library, it needs to be on a disk formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled) and the original image files must not be referenced. Referenced originals will not upload.
Also, the upload may hang, if you do not have enough free iCloud storage, orr if one of the videos or photos in your library is in an unsupported format or corrupted.
To start over, try to repair and rebuild the Aperture library before opening it in Photos. Try all Aperture Library First Aid options - starting with repairing the permissions.  (Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual)
If I simply delete the Photos.photolibrary file will that do the trick and lt me start a new fresh library using?
You will have to delete the photos that are already in icloud too; otherwise you are risking duplicates.
Can you launch Photos at all?  If yes, delete all photos in Photos and empty the Recently Deleted album. Wait for the deletion to sync to iCloud. Then delete the Photos.photolibrary.

  • How do I make a private album in new Photos for IMac?

How do I make a private album in the new Photos for IMac? I had one in iPhoto, and now that all the photos migrated to Photos my private album is not hidden anymore. Thanks for help!

Photos does not hide photos in albums at all.  Photos can only be hidden from Moments, Collections, Years.
If you want private albums, move the photos in questions to a different Photos Library, that you keep hidden.

  • Migration of iTunes from 10.5.8 (Leopard) to 10.10.1 (Yosemite)

    Hi hi everyone,
My old iBook G4 (late-2004 model) has had a good run and served me well, but I finally upgraded my hardware and purchased a Mac Mini (late-2014 model).  I am now in the process of selectively populating the Mini with relevant files that I use daily.  Much of what I want to do was done seamlessly using my external HDD as the go-between.  So simple things like documents were pretty straightforward drag-and-drop scenarios. With respect to iPhoto 5 > 9.6, I thankfully found the "iPhoto Library Upgrader.app" which fixed my photo migration issues.  Where I'm facing a sizeable hurdle is in migrating my music library.  Actually, "migrating" is perhaps not the right verb since my music is completely on my HDD and I'm simply trying to point iTunes on my Mini to read it from that same location.
    Background and Issue:
    - Since my iBook grew more and more sluggish over the years, I placed all of my music media onto the external HDD and "pointed" iTunes to read it there.  This still works perfectly on the iBook.  I have tried to recreate this precise "pointing" in the Mini's iTunes but it is so far unsuccessful.  All that happens when I open the new iTunes is it creates its own new .itl, and the sub-folders happily receive any files I "Automatically Add to iTunes" (which I did to test it).
    - After that brief functionality test, I deleted everything below Music > iTunes.  If I open and close iTunes again, a new .itl is created.
    - On the HDD, my old iTunes Library folder looks like a mess and I don't know why: Music > iTunes contains six .itdb files, no .itl file, and two different .xml files, namely "iTunes Library.xml" and "iTunes Library.xml.xml".  The sub-folder "Previous iTunes Libraries" contains .itl files ranging from 2009 to 2013.
I am admittedly rather confused by this point and the steady stream of support articles are not helping.  I get the impression I'm not searching the right keywords.
Bottom line: music files on external HDD being run in iTunes 10.6.3 on an iBook G4 running OSX 10.5.8 >>> trying to get iTunes 12.0.1.26 on a Mac Mini running OSX 10.10.1 to read the same files on the same HDD.
Any and all advice, direction and help are most welcome and appreciated.
    Best,
    SG

Hold down the option/alt key while starting iTunes.  When it asks to select a library, select the iTunes folder on the external.
    Do not change preferences.
    Do not "import" anything.
Do not move files or folders around other than the entire iTunes folder which you say is where you want it to be anyway.

  • 'Photos Library Recovered Photos' folder in Pictures

After a successful iPhoto to Photos migration, I have noticed a folder in 'HD > Users > xxxx > Pictures'  - titled 'Photos Library Recovered Photos'.
    The folder contains 112 images.
When I open the Photos.app all my photos from my previous iPhoto Library seem to be there and everything is functioning correctly.
So why has this folder appeared and where have these images come from?

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.

  • How do I delete the Photos App and go back to original

I did not back-up before updating, my bad. Can I simply delete Photos ??. Really think the new Photos app is about ten steps backwards, I tried to EDIT a photo and was sorely disappointed. Any help is appreciated.

The problem is Photos migrates your iPhoto Library file to a file name of Photos Library.photoslibrary. However, it saves this migrated version as iPhoto Library.migratedphotolibrary. So, you can open this file with iPhoto and you will receive a warning that tells you adding photos or editing will not be seen in Photo.  And it will change the name of the file to iPhoto Library.photoslibrary. No big deal since you won't use Photo. You can also duplicate that file and rename it back to iPhoto Library, open it with iPhoto and do the Repair when promoted.
Just keep Photo around in your /Applications folder and use iPhoto again.

  • Should I trash iPhoto after installing Photo?

Should I trash iPhoto after installing Photo?

Should I trash iPhoto after installing Photo?
Why would you want to do that? You paid for it, and Photos cannot do everything that iPhoto can, for example add location data to photos or batch changing the titles. Don't trash iPhoto, before you have explored your migrated photos library thoroughly and are sure, that all photos migrated correctly, and before you have tested all features of the new Photos and are sure, that there are no hidden bugs on your system, that would require reverting to iPhoto until the bugs are fixed.  And even if you, be sure, to keep a backup of iPhoto and your iPhoto library - best make a bootable clone of your system. Better be safe than sorry.
