Photo "name" (ie: DSC_0001.jpg).

Many of my photos have the same "name" (ie: DSC_0001.jpg). When I try to batch change them to a blank name so I can copy them to a DVD, I get a message saying that there is already a photo with the name DSC_0001.jpg! What am I doing wrong?  I have tried changing the name of the main library folder with the same result.

- Is DSC_0001.jpg, the photo title or the file name or the photo title?
Initially it is both but they are not the same thing
the photo title (which is initially set to the file name during import)
But you can never change the file name within iPhoto - you can change the photo title under the photo at will
- Is the DSC_0001.jpg, assigned by my mac during import from the camera or by the camera when the photo is shot?
That is the file name of the file that contains your photo and is assigned by your camera (and you can change how the camera assigns files names using your camera menus - I prefer continuous names rather than starting over each time but it is your choice)  And when you import photos iPhoto sets the title to the file name on import
the photo title (which is initially set to the file name during import)

  • "The volume for DSC_0001.jpg cannot be found"?

I'm a bit of a novice with macs but a new problem has occurred while importing photos from my Nikon D70s to iphoto. With the majority of images, it comes up with the caution "The volume for DSC_0001.jpg cannot be found" or whichever DSC image. If I press 'cancel' it imports the photo and I can view and edit it. If I press 'OK' or 'find photo' nothing useful seems to happen.
I have tried updating iphoto but I again get an alert saying "An eligible iPhoto application was not found in the location /Applications."
Any help with both these problems would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers.

This sometimes occurs if you’re importing a file into iPhoto and there’s already a file there with the same name. Digital cameras can produce many, many files with the same name over their lifetime, so it’s not uncommon to have several files called IMG_00543.JPG, for instance. Now you want to import one also called this.
What happens is that iPhoto compares the two files to check for duplicates. However, if iPhoto cannot find the file already in the database for comparison, then you get this message. It suggests that your database is damaged because iPhoto has lost track of this (or these) similarly named files.
A simple test is to rename the file you are importing - just add a character - IMG_00543a.JPG for instance. If this then imports with no issue then you might consider rebuilding your library:
Download iPhoto Library Manager  and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Viewing file extensions as part of photo name?

How can I set iPhoto to display the extension of every photo in every view where it displays the photo name? I often have several versions of a photo, which look very similar in thumbnail views. The only way I know to see which is the RAW file, which is the jpeg or tiff or even Photoshop file, is to right-click, or to keep the rather large and annoying Extended Photo Info box open. Isn't there some way to simply show all filenames with their extensions attached, so that I could look in any Event or Album and see at a glance which one is the .cr2 or .jpg or .tif etc? I certainly don't want to create albums with just the jpegs and more albums with just the RAW files. I like having them together but it's a nuisance and a time-waster not to be able to just read the file names to know which is which. SURELY there is a way!

  • Changing Photo Name

I find it hard to believe there is no way to change the name of a photo once it is imported into iWeb. But so far, I cannot find a way. I do not see this as a problem on the web page itself, but if someone downloads the photo, they'll get the original name. A few of which are embarrassing.
How can I change the photo name besides starting all over?

    Yes,
You need to run the script right after each time you publish to folder.
The script will look for photo page(s) in the published folder and apply photo captions to the published photo file names, and re-link the new photo names in the .js file (this is for the slideshow).
There is one thing though, I wrote the script to pad out any spaces in the captions with underscore.
Example: caption: "Twisted tree 1" , the script will name the file to "Twistedtree1.jpg" . The reason is that many FTP servers don't like spaces in file name.
You can get there script here: iWeb Photos Rename
I will post in another thread for this fix.

  • Changing photo name after downloading

I downloaded a group of photos to my computer and wanted to rename each photo. When I attempted to do so, I received a message saying "changing file name extension may make file unusable". When I did it, the photo disappeared. Why can I not change the name? I have done so in the past with no problem using a different camera.

    Hi Nancy,
Are you trying to Rename the files using Photoshop Album Starter Edition or simply from Windows Explorer. In either case, you should rename only the file name and leave the extension as it is. For example, if your file name is "file1.jpg" you should only change 'file1' and leave ".jpg" as it is. Otherwise, Windows will not be able to recognize the file as a picture file.

  • How to set iPhone photo name pattern?

Is there a way to specify some other naming pattern for iPhone photos? Currently, the photos are named: IMG_nnnn.JPG (where 'nnnn' is a sequential number). Specifically, I would like to specify a name that uses the date (e.g., 20080214-nnnn.jpg). Minimally, I would like to have the names be in lower-case.

Read the User's Guide, it covers basic functionality of the device including how to add pictures to contacts.

  • Changing a photo name after importing

Can you tell me if it is now possible to change the 'original' name given to a photo once it has been assigned. I have stayed off iphoto because although it was possible to update the 'displayed' name in iphoto, the underlying name always stayed the same. This caused problems elsewhere. I have been using Picassa up to now becuase this did allow the underlying photo name to be updated. I know there is software out there that gets round this, but is the iphoto core product now capable ?

I understand the point. The issue arises when (in my case) I use the 'media collector' on my HP Media Smart EX490. This collects any new files automatically and stores them in the file structure they have been placed in on the Mac. Because this works from the file name, you can get a mismatch between what is on the HP Media Smart and the photo name on the Mac. Not the end of the world I know, but, up to now, by using Picassa instead I have been able to change the file name to match the photo. This causes the media collector to re-collect the photo using the new file name, so everything stays in step. I am sure there must be other examples out there, so it may well be that if Apple added this function they would promote some switchers from Picasa to Iphoto. Thanks for your help anyway.

  • Issue Updating Photo Names in Web Gallery

There is a sync issue with Web Galleries when the photo name is updated in iPhoto while another update is occurring simultaneously. The changes made in iPhoto are lost.
The 7.0.2 Update does not fix this issue.
It seems there should be the option to "update now" and make the web gallery look just like the iPhoto version.
    Anyone else have this issue?

    pschlampp:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The syncing works correctly for me. Try clearing out the iPhoto Cache folders that are in your User/Library/Caches folder and delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist that's in the User/Library/Preferences folder. See if that will let you update titles as intended.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Photo names in slide shows.

Hi. Simple question. I can see how to add captions to a slide show (under preferences) but I would like to know if you can add the photo name to it (Besides the obvious of copying the name to the caption)? I'm using Photoshop Elements 6.0 on Windows Vista. What I need to do is take the photos, put them in a slide show, and give to a friends family so she and they can look at them and pick out which one(s) they want to print. With the photo names it would make life a lot easier. Thanks.

  • Photo name not reflecting in iPhoto

Hi everyone... Forgive me for this question while I am on a learning curve w/ my Mac. I have a question about photo names not reflecting in iPhoto. I recently loaded some pictres from a compact flash card, and iPhoto started and pulled them right in. I went to the Finder, navigated to Pictures, then the iPhoto library. I found the pictures, and used Automator to change the name of the photos. I opened iPhoto, and went to the Album I created, and all the photos have the old name as given by my camera. I cannot find what I am doing wrong. Thanks for any help. Chris

    Chris,
You would open Image Capture (in your Application folder) and set your preference there (weird, huh!)
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
    Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.

  • Exporting iphoto 08 album to USB or DVD/CD individual photo names lost

    Hi All,
Trying to export iphoto album's using iphoto 08 to either DVD, CD or USB or Media card.
Problem: Either all the names of the individual pictures are replaced with a number OR some photo names/descriptions appear and the rest in the album are numbered.
I do not care about the order of the photo's.
I just want to give a copy to a family member with the names on them. Some of photos are from 1800 & early 1900's so I don't want to lose the information with them. Nothing worse than a whole lotta photos that you don't know who or what they are about.
    Any help here??
    Thanks!
    Cherisse

When you added this information in iPhoto you added a "Title" to the photo, and the Finder (which is what reads the disk or USB device) doesn’t understand that. it just uses Filenames.
So, File -> Export and in the Export dialogue choose to use the Title as filename.
    Regards
    TD

  • All my photos in the iphoto have disappeared, not sure if this related to any iphoto upgrade or other issue, tried to find the photos through the finder (JPG or photo) but failed, can you help me to get back my photos please?

All my photos in the iphoto have disappeared, not sure if this related to any iphoto upgrade or other issue, tried to find the photos through the finder (JPG or photo) but failed, can you help me to get back my photos please?

Help us to help you: There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance. (And no, more exclamation marks do not get help faster or make your issue seem urgent. They just make it seem like you have a stuck key )
