Photo Names/Metadata etc.

I use Avairy and PhotoMgrPro to edit and organize photos but move the photos between the two, I have to run them through Photos which strips the file names and the metadata I have so carefully worked on.  Is there a solution to this?  I can't upload jpegs to Internet sites.  There are no accessible file names in Photo.  Is anyone at Apple listening or is the corporate hubris too great?  Sorry, but I am irate.

When you imported into the new library, you separated the metadata from the images.
If you still have the intact iPhoto Library on the external drive, then start over. Trash the iPhoto Library folder in the Pictures folder of the new ibook. Copy the entire iPhoto Library Folder from the external to the Pictures folder of the ibook. Launch iPhoto on the ibook. If it asks you to choose a library then navigate to the iPhoto Library folder. [To force the prompt to choose your library, hold down the Option key while you launch iPhoto.] Your library should open in the exact condition it was when you copied it to your external drive, metadata and all.

  • Best practice for editing Captions, photo names, places, etc.

Hello - I find the small windows in iPhoto to be a bit "clunky" to do a bunch of meta-tagging. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on how to best do this? Where I can, I do batch changes. If I upload photos to mobilme galleries - can you edit this data there and have it sync back?
    Thanks.
    Steve

You mean adding metadata? Keywords can be added in the Info Window or using the Keyword Manager window, or with Quick Groups.
Titles and Descriptions (as iPhoto calls Captions) can be added via the Info Window or by the Batch Change command, if you’re working in batches.
You can also add titles and keyword simply by editing them directly under the image in Browse mode.
Those, and my suggestions above, are about your options.

Looking at the same photo before flattening, what is being shown is only the top layer.
    How do I correct this?

The top layer is indeed the one that is visible, unless there is/are area(s) of translucency on that layer, so that you can visualize a portion of the subjacent layer.

Are your settings targeted to have the printer manage colors, or, to have PSE manage colors?

  • Microsoft Pro Photo - Geotag metadata in Lightroom

Geotagging (embedding location information in image metadata) has occasionally been mentioned in posts in this forum, but I just thought I'd share my recent experiences with Microsoft Pro Photo Tools (MPPT) with those that may not be aware of its existence/capabilities.
MPPT is essentially a metadata editor with Geotagging capability - and it is free (
). Since version 2 it has supported Adobe's XMP sidecar file format. I've recently used it with the following workflow to tag my images with location info directly from a separate GPS:
    1. Whilst shooting pictures, I carry around my Garmin GPS, recording my track (optional).
    2. Back at home, I download my images into LR, automatically adding copyright metadata, etc to all files at import.
    3. I download the track information from my Garmin GPS, saving it as a GPX file.
    4. I then open up the track GPX file and the images in MPPT.
5a. Based on the date/time exif data embedded in the image file and the date/time information in the track file, MPPT automatically identifies the location of each image and displays them on a map.
5b. If you have no GPS, you can easily enter in location and fine tune on a map. For example, enter "Seattle Art Museum" and the selected images are associated with the location of the Seattle Art Museum and shown on a map for you to fine tune!
    6. With one click, MPTT then writes location metadata (Country, State, City, Location, etc) to either the original image file or the sidecar XMP (depending on user defined configuration) - I write the data to XMP.
    7. Back to Lightroom and sync metadata (one click). At that point, all the location metadata is visible within the Library module.
I was impressed how easy this all was. One day this capability may well be within LR, but until then this is an easy way to geotag your images.

Have you looked at Jeffrey Friedl's cross platform tool? http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/gps and http://regex.info/blog/2008-10-29/979
This works inside Lightroom, understands track log files, works with manual tagging from google maps and much more.

  • Issue Updating Photo Names in Web Gallery

There is a sync issue with Web Galleries when the photo name is updated in iPhoto while another update is occurring simultaneously. The changes made in iPhoto are lost.
The 7.0.2 Update does not fix this issue.
It seems there should be the option to "update now" and make the web gallery look just like the iPhoto version.
    Anyone else have this issue?

    pschlampp:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The syncing works correctly for me. Try clearing out the iPhoto Cache folders that are in your User/Library/Caches folder and delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist that's in the User/Library/Preferences folder. See if that will let you update titles as intended.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Viewing file extensions as part of photo name?

How can I set iPhoto to display the extension of every photo in every view where it displays the photo name? I often have several versions of a photo, which look very similar in thumbnail views. The only way I know to see which is the RAW file, which is the jpeg or tiff or even Photoshop file, is to right-click, or to keep the rather large and annoying Extended Photo Info box open. Isn't there some way to simply show all filenames with their extensions attached, so that I could look in any Event or Album and see at a glance which one is the .cr2 or .jpg or .tif etc? I certainly don't want to create albums with just the jpegs and more albums with just the RAW files. I like having them together but it's a nuisance and a time-waster not to be able to just read the file names to know which is which. SURELY there is a way!

  • Batch Changing Photo Names and E-mailing them

    Hi
I batch change my photos names in Iphoto to text (I think it is.) So I can date or name events. However when I e-mail the photos to a friend, he receives them with the original numbers that my digital camera had assigned to them.
When I look back to my sent mail folder, the photos are how I had re-named them with the batch change.
I don't get it, can I get some help here as to how I can e-mail photos and have them arrive with their modified names.
    Thanks
    T. Rod

    T. Rod:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You will have to export those photos to a folder on the Desktop with the option to use the Title as the new file name. Then add them to the email. That's the only way to get files with the title as the file name.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. • Custom Name Metadata? Download Path Settings?

Is there a way to use metadata in setting the custom name? I was hoping to be able to use a naming convention like \YYYY\MM-DD Descriptive Name.
I used a tool on my PC to this and I really prefer this format to all others.
I assume there must be a way to do this kind of thing using Bridge.

    Omke,
Thanks for the reply but I wasn't wanting to use slashes in the names literally. I was hoping to have a
folder created if needed for each of those portions of the file name. The result would be that the fully qualified name would be in the form of \YYYY\MM-DD Descriptive text\filename from camera. Some examples might result in this:
    \2005\12-24 Christmas Eve\IMG2048.JPG
    \2005\12-24 Christmas Eve\IMG2048.CR2
    \2005\12-24 Christmas Eve\IMG2049.JPG
    \2005\12-24 Christmas Eve\IMG2049.CR2
    \2005\12-24 Christmas Eve\IMG2050.JPG
    \2005\12-24 Christmas Eve\IMG2050.CR2
    \2005\12-25 Christmas Morning\IMG2051.JPG
    \2005\12-25 Christmas Morning\IMG2051.CR2
    \2005\12-25 Christmas Morning\IMG2052.JPG
    \2005\12-25 Christmas Morning\IMG2052.CR2
    \2005\12-25 Christmas Morning\IMG2053.JPG
    \2005\12-25 Christmas Morning\IMG2053.CR2
The end result is that the photos are naturally organized via their date. The software I use in Windows allows me to structure the target folder name with components from the photo's metadata and additional text provided by me in the form of a Job Code. The Job Code provides the descriptive text. The metadata provides the date details. Heck I even incorporate a bit of metadata from the photo that tells me the camera model so I can determine who took the photo. I know in our family who owns which camera models and then I parse that into and extra bit of text. So my fully qualified names look like this:
    \2005\12-25
    Dad Christmas Morning\IMG2051.JPG
    \2005\12-25
    Dad Christmas Morning\IMG2051.CR2
    or
    \2005\12-25
    Jessie Christmas Morning\DSC2051.JPG
    \2005\12-25
    Jessie Christmas Morning\DSC2051.CR2
In each of these cases I knew that Dad used the Canon 20D or 50D while Jessie used the Panasonic S10.
As for the batch rename feature, this would be plausible on the files but as you can see, we don't rename the files. We create the folders the files are stored in with the metadata. In our home we shoot thousands of photos every year. In 2008 so far we have shot over 7,000 pictures. The have to be distributed into folders to be manageable.
Oh by the way, a second feature the tool I use in Windows has is it protects the files too. I does this in tow ways. First it allows me to set the files as read only. Second it allows me to copy the file to two locations one is the primary location on our network that we all use to view and manipulate the files. The other location is on an external hard disk. The external hard disk files are only visible by me and I only use them to restore files that may have been accidentally deleted or otherwise ruined.
As you can see this tool represents a significant part of my workflow. I try to use it under Parallels but , Parallels has difficulty with card readers an the nature of removable media. Plus I figure Adobe must have a similar capability seeing how powerful their tools are. Perhaps I am wrong in my expectations of Adobe in this regard.. I had assumed it was just my ignorance of the tool and that I could accomplish the same things with Adobe if I only sat down and learned the toolset.
BTW, the tool I am referring to is called Downloader Pro from Breeze Systems. It is a $29 tool just for downloading photos from cameras and cards to your computer. I have asked them to create a Mac version but they are not interested. They are a strictly Windows shop. :-(
PS. Please excuse any typos as I am replying during a brief wakening in the night and I cannot see as well as I might if I were more awake.

  • Why won't Apple put the photo name in the Photos app?!

I keep hoping that Apple will do a very simple thing and that is put the photo name/title in the Photos app for iOS. It's not even available in the iOS version of iPhoto as near as I can tell. This one simple thing would be a tremendous boon to anyone showing photos under any circumstances. "1 of 55" is not very helpful. What possible reason could make this undesirable? It isn't confusing or cluttering up the interface. Nothing is as simple as syncing photos to an iPad with iTunes; I've looked at Photosmith, and while a very nice app, you have to create & publish individual collections from Lightroom one at a time. Does anyone know if it's possible to force the title to be shown? I've read that the information isn't even transferred to the iPad or iPhone but at least some metadata is transferred for iOS iPhoto.

You can let Apple know that you would like this feature:

  • I really need emergency iphone help- please- it has gone into restoration mode and wont come out unless i click restore- if i do will i loose all my photos and videos etc? please help!!!

i recently plugged my iphone4 into my laptop to sync, when i plugged it in, itunes told me that i needed to update my software, so i clicked up date and walked awayfrom my computer leaving it to do the rest, but by the time i came back to my laptop 2-3 hours later i had realized that it has run out of charge and because of it my phone had gone into retoration mode- and the only way to fix it was to press restore. what do i do? do i click restore or will that take my phone back to factory settings as i have a tonne of photos and videos etc that i have not backed up yet?
what should i do anny coments or ideas please let me know!

The first step in the upgrade process is a backup.
Did iTunes not create a new backup when you first connected it?
You really should be syncing your device and copying pictures off of it on a regular basis.
Starting an upgrade without first syncing and copying the pictures off is not a bright idea.
At this point, you only option is to restore.
Also, in the future, ensure your laptop is plugged into external power before starting upgrades.

    No.
One of you create a new AppleID and one use the existing AppleID.
But you can still use the items in each iTunes library.
Create separate computer logins for each of you.
This will give you each your own data. Contacts, calendars, photos, etc. (and your own iTunes library).

Sorry, yes indeed you can do that, I thought you wanted to keep the accounts the way they are now and also share photo stream between all devices, which of course is not possible.
In order to login to the account you are currently logged in to as a secondary account, as a primary account, and vice versa, you will need to delete both accounts from that device and then log back into them with the correct account as a primary (settings > iCloud) and the correct account as a secondary (settings > mail, contacts, calendars).

  • I have set up our school ipads to be supervised by Apple Configurator and am using VPP to buy apps.  I now find the supervised ipads do not allow the pupils to download photos or movies etc. Any suggestions would be great please.

I have set up our school ipads to be supervised by Apple Configurator and am using VPP to buy apps. I did this initially as our school internet connection was stopping us from being able to update the IOS and our County was offering a managed system, Lightspeed, which took control of every device in school which proved very expensive.  I now find the supervised ipads do not allow the pupils to download photos or movies etc. As we frequently use the ipads as cameras this is causing us a problem. We have a school imac that I use to keep the devices updated with Apple Configurator (not connected to our network), and this doesn't seem to offer any solution to download them either.  I was told there was a setting in Apple Configurator to allow other computers to download from supervised devices, but I can't see it anywhere.  I am very new to this so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated please.

I assume you are wanting to take the photos and movies off the iPads?
Connect the iPad to a Apple computer. Open "Image Capture". Any photos or video can me imported to the desktop or other location on your computer.
I had this same problem last year and as we have no wifi I asked lots of people at Apple what I could do - no one provided this answer (a little unbelievable!). If you have wifi using something like dropbox would be an easier solution.
    Hope this helps

Resetting the settings will reset things like the wallpaper to the default. It wont remove the apps or music.
As the previous poster said, the apps and music will be tied to the previous owners Apple ID, you'll need the password to update the apps and remain authorized to play the music.
I would suggest taking your stuff off (the camera pictures) then erasing all content and settings so the iPad is like new. For privacy reasons alone I would erase the device. I realise you want to keep the music, but since you haven't paid for it (it was purchased under someone elses ID) then it isn't yours to keep, you'll need to write down the tracks and purchase them under your ID.
