Photo Orientation around the Compass

When upgrading to the 3.0 for the iphone, I noticed when viewing photos, the orientation only works to 3 sides. If you viewing in a landscape mode, I can turn my iphone 180º, the photos will flip to match orientation. When viewing in portrait and turn the iphone 180º, the photos will not match orientation.
This is a problem because in earlier versions, photos will orient itself on all 4 sides; east, west, north, and south. And based off of this, I purchased a Speck brand heavy duty iphone case/stand. The stand is located at the top part of the phone, so in order for me to view photos on a stand, in the portrait mode, I have to turn the iphone 180º. This worked in the earlier versions, but with the 3.0 upgrade, my iphone stand is worthless. Please fix.

Which OS are you using?
I believe that old versions of Windows (XP and earlier) did not understand the orientation flag that is stored in the EXIF data. Most modern cameras have orientation sensors, and the save the orientation when the photo was taken in the EXIF data for the photo (the EXIF data is metadata that is stored along with the photo data in a jpg file).
Any decent photo browser will understand the EXIF data and will display the photo properly without having to manually rotate the photo. However, if you manually rotate the photo in Windows, the photo data will be rotated, but the orientation flag will not be changed. When the photo is loaded into the iPad, it interprets the marker in the EXIF metadata and rotates the photo a second time.
I'm not sure that this is your problem, but if it is your problem, then the photo is being displayed incorrectly on the PC, and the iPad is displaying it "correctly".
If you think this might be the problem, try installing a program called irfanview on your PC. You can download it at: http://www.irfanview.com
It is a great public domain image viewer program. If you install it, try looking at your photos in irfanview and see if it also rotates your photos like the iPad does.
Ron
p.s. I can understand how what is happening must be annoying. The photo will be displayed incorrectly, and as you instinctively rotate the iPad to fix it, it auto-rotates again leaving the photo always in the wrong orientation.
My OS is windows 7. So to fix it, I should rotate my pictures in my pc folder in landscape mode so that in the ipad it will be in portrait? As of right now in my pc folder my landscape pictures is in landscape in ipad but my portrait pictures is also in landscape in ipad. And no matter what I do, the portrait ones are always landscape. I've deleted the ipod photo cache and resynced. And no changed.

  • Photo Orientation on Windows platforms

I am so sick of flipping and turning my pictures every time I transfer them to my pc. Is Apple going to address this issues anytime soon?

As I said, the orientation of photos is set in the EXIF data of the photo itself. Whatever you use to view the photo, whether it be Windows Explorer or some other program, should obey the orientation data and display the photo whichever way up it was taken.
Picasa for Windows is written correctly and shows photos correctly. It is Windows that ignores the EXIF data, and as Microsoft make Windows, who else's problem could it be?

  • Changing photo orientation

The photo orientation on the CHAPTERS THEME main page is vertical. How do I change it to horizontal?
    thank you

Unlike the books, calendars do not change the orientation of a frame depending on the orientation of the photo dropped into it.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I believe Frank is referring to the end use (e.g., for print or on-screen use).
Until he returns, I can tell you that I ran a quick test using an image from the Aperture 3 training book library which was as follows:
Camera = Canon EOS 5D Mark II
    Master resolution = 5616 x 3744 (21 MP)
I was able to export to a JPEG with end file size of 1 MB as follows:
Export Presets drop-down > select 'Edit' option
Selected preset name 'JPEG - 50% of Original Size' > change percentage value to 40% > change DPI value to '300' > click OK to set as current default > Export version to desktop.
The exported JPEG has a resolution of 2246 x 1498 and appears on screen to have the same image quality of the original in Aperture.
Note - I did not change the default Image Quality slider in the Export Preset dialog (which left it at 10).
Basically, you will need to play around with the settings until you find the appropriate values to arrive at an image version you want.

You would need an image editor to edit the images and add a border to the image first before importing them into Final Cut.

I have a new MacBook Pro with Iphoto installed when purchased.  When editing a photo, primarily orientation changes, the slideshow initially displays the photos in proper orientation.  However, after leaving Iphoto and shutting down the computer, and then going back to run a slideshow the photo displays back to its' original orientation, that is, the edit-change was not saved.  Please help...the program information says all edit-changes are automatically save and therefore there is no save command, but my changes are not being saved...thank you for any suggestions...HM

    Hi celi_116,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you're seeing unexpected behavior with Wi-Fi, first make sure your iPad is up to date (iOS 7.0.4 was recently released.)
Update your device wirelessly (available in iOS 5 and later)
Ensure your device is connected to a power source. To avoid potential data costs connect your device to a Wi-Fi network.
Go to Settings > General > Software Update. iOS will automatically check for available updates. Available updates download automatically if your device is connected to Wi-Fi and a power source.
If an update is available* you can tap Download to download the update.
After the download has completed tap Install to update your iOS.
If the behavior persists after updating, the steps in this article can also help:

Sounds kind of stupid, but check to make sure that your iphone case cover is not blocking the edge of the camera lens.  I had a silicone case on my 3S and when it got older, it started tot slip and the edges of my pictures were blurred.

  • Why do my photos move around when I save an image from email so difficult to locate the new saved image

My photos move around randomly after I save an image from email can't locate picture easily with 1000 photos on iPad please help

I believe the default is for them to order themselves in 'date taken' order. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do to change that. It's the default in the photos app and users can't change it. You can try looking for a third party photo app that may have more functionality. Afraid I can't recommend any since I've never looked for them but I'm sure someone can.

  • Is there a work-around to enable Digital Photo Pro on the Microsoft Surface Pro ????

As I understand the problem  DPP is unable detect the screen resolution of the tablet ( the defauilt res of the tablet
    is 1920 x1080) with a minimum of 1024 x768.
It would be usful if one could type in your working screen res into at startup if that's the only problem
___I've looked at other screen drivers from Intell but I realize if I could install thrm I'de lose the touch functionallity
Are there any other ideas out there???
    Thanks  artB

Canon DPP is Canon provided application for desktop/laptop computers and they don't have a version for any tablets as far as I'm aware (not even iOS or Android versions).
But there are other photo editing programs that would work.  I have an iPad.  While Apple has their own photo software (which isn't going to work on a Windows tablet) Adobe has an app called PS Touch.
PS Touch isn't nearly as full featured as Photoshop.  It limits the image resolution (it resizes any images that you import to it so they don't exceed the max resolution) but it does have most of the commonly used adjustments.  So if a person were just trying to get something out, it works in a pinch.
One other catch is that PS Touch can't deal with RAW images... so it's JPEG only.  But I can import JPEGs off the card into the iPad and then edit them -- not as well as I can if they're on a regular computer, but this is what I'ved when I'm away for a weekend with my camera.

  • Photos print in the wrong orientation

I have just composed a 40 page book for printing at Apple.
Everything looks fine on the display. However, when I do print out on my laser printer or to PDF, some photos are disoriented. Landscape photos show vertically and vice-versa.
Presumably I could turn them by 90 degrees in iPhoto and then add them to the book, but how will I then know what the end result will look like when printed?
    Any clues please?

    Thanks LarryHN and MadisonP,
Both tips were useful and I have now solved it in this way. By double right-clicking on any photo in the composed book it will enlarge for editing. At that stage the photo showed in the inverted or disoriented manner. I then turned it 90 or 180 degrees to correct and then closed it by clicking done. It still looked correct in the book, but this time it also looked correct in the Preview, so presumably it will print correctly.
How some photos came to be like this I don't know, but it's pointless trying to analyse.
    Thanks again.

  • I tried to upload photos to Costco photo and was unsuccessful, since then I can not open my Iphoto on my desktop. It appears but goes right to the dashboard. A blue border is also around the entire IPhoto. What has happened?

As stated my IPhoto is not able to stay on the screen since I attempted to upload to Costco photo center. The Iphoto only appears if I hold the mouse down. Once I attempt to move the mouse it goes right back to the dashboard. Also, there is a blue border that appears.  Please help.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Is it possible to change the orientation with the Ken Burns effect?

    Friends,
I would like to change the orientation of the Ken Burns effect for a particular photo that I've insterted into a movie.  In other words, the KBE crops the image in landscape mode -- I'd like to crop it in portrait mode (which is how the photo was taken).  How do I do this?
    Thanks!

    Tom,
You broke my heart, but I figured out a way around it using cropping and keyframes.

  • Photo Orientation

So I'm still getting to know my way around iPhoto, but from the way it appears to work, the program automatically rotates a photo to the orientation it BELIEVES is "up". Which is all fine and good, but how do I force it to show me the orientation hardcoded into the photo?
Because there's this one photo in particular that I just CAN'T get to stay in the proper orientation once it's exported out of iPhoto (to my MobileMe gallery or my iPod). I've rotated it multiple times, restarted my Mac, done everything I can think of, but the orientation just won't "stick" outside of iPhoto.
How can I see what the hardcoded orientation is so that I know I'm flipping it into the correct orientation?

    cks:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The only way to get the photo to show in the original position is to turn of the auto-rotate feature in the camera. Then photos taken in the portrait orientation will be imported in the landscape orientation.
Are you wanting a portrait photo to be exported out of the library in the vertical orientation? If so then click on the vertical thumbnail in iPhoto and use the File->Export->File Export menu option. In the Export window select jpg as the format, select the size and quality level you want and export. That will give you the vertical oriented file on the desktop.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
