Photo orientation with AppleTV

Hello all
I have been having some problems with photo orientation in AppleTV screen saver and in viewing the iPhoto library on AppleTV. I did all the usual things, restarted the Apple TV, restarted computer, etc. What was really strange was the photos I had changed rotation in iPhoto were all good. It was AppleTV which wasn't seeing them as 'corrected' images. What AppleTV was doing, was seeing the original photos, rather than the edited versions (the correctly oriented photos).
What I had to do was go to the original source of the photo. So I had to click on the photo, then go to File, see original file. The original file was still in the incorrect position. Once I opened this in preview and corrected it, it seemed to work. Will keep you posted. What is also interesting to note is that AppleTV was having problems with the original picture files of photos taken with a camera, rather than with the iPhone. There seems to be a bug here about how the AppleTV sees original and corrected files when the photos are taken with a digital camera.
Keen to know what others have found.
Happy AppleTV travels everyone.

Updating the information regarding photo orientation with AppleTV screen saver.
Clear instructions: Click on photo in iPhoto, then go to File, choose 'Reveal in Finder', select 'Original File'. A window opens up where the original photo file is held. Open the photo in Preview. Rotate photo as needed. Close and save. You are done. Restart your AppleTV and turn your photos on and off to share in iTunes. Ta Da, it all works and it's very easy.
Hope this is helpful.

  • Photo orientation with iPhone 5

When I take a photo with my iPhone 5 and email it to someone (including my desktop computer), it arrives in landscape orientation even if I shot the image as portrait. So I have to manually rotate the image 90°. I have heard that there is a fix for this problem, but do not remember the steps involved. Can someone provide the steps to reset the phone so it sends the photos in the orientation in which they were shot?  Thanks!

The client is ignoring the orientation information in the metadata for the photo. It's not a problem with the phone, it's a problem with theclient who is receiving it.

  • No Photo Sync with AppleTV Vista 64

OK this should NOT be this hard. I am having difficulties with Photo sync. I get the eternal loop of syncing and it does not ever get to the point where it copies the photos. I have seen similar issues from other users but no detail of how to fully resolve this and this lead seemed to disappear with no follow up to any resolutions.
I have installed the 64 bit version of itunes after accidently installing the 32 bit version. I did remove the 32 bit and then install the 64 bit.
I found detail on moving the photos to a public folder which I also did. This has not solved the issue.
The only other piece of information I saw was on removing the ipod photo cache file in the parent directory of photos however I could not find this file (unless it is hidden of course).
I have checked whether hosting the photos on an external drive will solve the issue and have removed and then reinstalled itunes latest version to verify this is not the issue. Still the eternal sync loop happens
So I am a very frustrated new vista user who has spent the last 24 hours trying to find a fix for this.
Perhaps I should have gone mac

OK so no replies of any thought on what caused this. So I finally got the syncing to work. Do not know what really started to happen as it is still flakey in my opinion.
Step 1. Removed photos from public photo folder and returned them to the normal pic folder.
Step 2. Checked permissions on all folders and made sure all folders and subdirectories were set so that read only was off. I really don't know if this had any effect.
Step 3. Prior to tryong to sync I removed the iPod Photo Cache folder and directory from the pictures directory where all my photos were now stored. This was from an earlier topic discussion in another thread.
Step 4. Selected one photo directory to sync... boom the dang thing started to sync instead of the eternal loop.
Now here is the rub. When I thought I had cracked this I went and started to add other directories. What happened then was that it went back into the eternal loop of syncing. I could not get the AppleTV to sync. I gave up in frustration after this last night.
Step 5. I returned tonight and followed same Step 1-3 and this time I selected all the photos and folders I wanted added. I am now some 500 of 11000 the way through syncing. yay!
Again, this does not give me a guarantee it is fixes as it appears that if I will try to add more photo folders in the future then I am sure I will get into the eternal loop.
I would appreiate if anyone has any further thoughts or information on this. Perhaps this is a bug in the iTunes 8.1.1.10 as I have seen other comments relating to the eternal sync for this release of software which do not relate to photos.

  • Slideshow with origami transitions - photo orientation changed

I started playing around with the slideshow, and was happy with the origami transitions until I realized that for a few of my photos, it had rotated the images 90 degrees. They consistently showed up in the wrong orientation as the slideshow cycled through all my images.
Is there a way to specify which is the desired orientation for display in the slideshow for a photo?
And I wasn't messing with the angle of the iPad at all, so it wasn't changing the screen display orientation...
    Thanks!

  • Photo Orientation Incorrect When Viewing MobileMe

I've tried to find a solution to this by searching other posts. What I've found is this is not a new problem. I have two AppleTVs and I have the same problem on both units.
But this is the real oddity. The photos not only display correctly orientated when viewed through a browser on both a Mac and iPhone (as well as the MyGallary app), but they also display correctly on AppleTV when previewing (as they carousel) while in the applicable onscreen navigation menus, and when they are displayed as a screen saver set to "Floating". However, if directly viewing in slideshow or when the screen saver is set to "Slideshow" the orientation is all messed up. And the current photos I'm view where also all taken with an iPhone and uploaded directly to the users MobileMe account.
And on top of all that, when I viewed the first 4-5 photos on AppleTV (now up to 15 photos) they displayed in the correct orientation. Now some of those that did display correctly are messed up.
How can the preview and floating screensaver correctly display the photos, they have a wrong orientation when in slide show. Again, this is on two aTVs. Seriously, there have only been Apple devices and Apple services used - this is should not be happening.
I've have this problem in the past on both aTVs, but the pictures where taken with a Canon and uploaded to mobileme from an iMac. I figured it was a minor inconvenience and that Apple would resolve this in subsequent updates - this was over a year ago.
The only thing I've tried to do so far is to delete the user's MobileMe account and then re-added - nothing corrected.
Oh, and the software is up to date on both units.

  • Incorrect Photo Orientation - Aperture 3 to Apple TV 2

About a year ago I imported my iPhoto library of about 23,000 photos to Aperture 3.  The iPhoto library had some small corruptions in it and I was hoping the more robust nature of Aperture 3 would fix these, but the import made the corruption issues significantly worse.  Old Events from iPhoto (now Projects in Aperture 3) were randomly split up all over the place, duplicates of many photos appeared and many photos seemed to have lost the EXIF(?) data indicating which way photos were taken (landscape or portrait mode). As a result of the last problem many photos were on their side or upside down.  Applecare were no use at all, claimed they had never heard of such a problem and had no idea how to solve these issues.
After laboriously fixing most of the problems by hand over the past year, all the photos in my Aperture 3 library (now around 25,000 photos), display the correct way up.
However, I still have one problem I can't fix.  When Apple TV picks the photos up from Aperture (on my iMac), via my WiFi network, it displays around 20% of them on their sides rather than the correct way up.  Rebooting everything multiple times hasn't fixed it. My guess is the Apple TV is reading the corrupted EXIF data associated with these photos, and ignoring their orientation as they appear (after manual correction), in Aperture.
Does anyone have a fix or any ideas please?

I believe that iTunes/Aperture keeps a cache for the photos shared with AppleTV. Those need to be updated. If you can figure out where the cache is and delete it, iTunes/Aperture should regenerate it in the correct orientation. Unfortunately I don't have the time now to figure out where it is.

  • Problems with synching iTunes with AppleTV

    Hi,
I am frustrated and cannot find help elsewhere, so I hope someone can help me here....
I have 1st gen AppleTV with the latest SW. My iTunes is version 10 on my iMac.
For some reason all my music, photos, etc have disappeared from the Appletv, and it now has only the purchases I have made via Apple TV.
When iTunes starts to synch, it appears to try to first transfer the purchases from Apple TV to iMac. For some reason this transferring does not work well, and purchases do not get transferred to iMac. iTunes just has a message "Transferring Purchases from "Apple TV. Copying 3 of 25: <name of the show>". Even if it indicates that the 2 (of 25) would have been transferred, they have not. This can go on for ever - all day, over night, just does not transfer the purchases.
QUESTION 1: why does it not transfer the purchases??
I would have patience to wait for the transfers as I don't need them in my iMac (yet), but in the meanwhile I want my music and photos back from iTunes to AppleTV. This synching does not work because it is trying to transfer purchases from AppleTV to iMac.
QUESTION 2: how do I stop transferring the purchases and get the music and photos synched with AppleTV? Disk space on AppleTV should not be the issue, there is plenty of space on my AppleTV.
Any one, please, make my day!

Have you tried restarting everything including your router, you may want to try relinking the library and apple tv.

  • Photo orientation off in appletv

Help please.  I have been using Aperture 3.3.  Downloaded some photos from a Sony Cybershot DSC-W200.  This camera is slightly broken, or glitching, because after I take a photo, it sometimes shows up sideways or upside down, even on the camera display!  Auto orientation is set to "on" in the camera.  So I know there is a problem here, but it still takes great pictures.  I can easily rotate the pictures after downloading to Aperture, and all looks good!  Until I just picked up an AppleTV3.  Now, when I share my Aperture library to the AppleTV, the pictures on the TV are sideways and upside down again, and don't appear as they do on Aperture!  How can I straighten this out??

I tried your solution - went ot File Menu, Homesharing, Choose Photos to share with AppleTV, closed iTunes, re-opened.... then went back to TV and AppleTV and drilled down through the menus. It took awhile to find where the Photos are hidden in plain sight! I THINK it is going to work. I still don't see any indications that my Mac iTunes is seeing the TV, but the photos do appear to be trasferring. The Photos selection is buried under Music as a sub-tier after the rest of the list, Artists, Albums, etc. Right now, spinning wheel, I think because it is doing a first time 'load'.

Thanks for the information as this helped immensely. I was having the same problem having recently purchased the iPad and using Windows Vista. Made a series of edits in "Microsoft Office Picture Manager" to correct the view on my PC by rotating and then loaded into the iPad and they were showing incorrectly. Found a quick solution was to do all the rotations whilst in file manager (i.e. viewing the icons) and not picture editor. Seems this enables them to display correctly on the PC and also go into the iPad correctly. If you actually rotate the pictures whilst editing it doesn't work.

  • How do I recover photos from my AppleTV photo stream? when I reset my iPhone, I did not get all of my photos back. How do I get these photos off of my Apple TV?

how do I recover photos from my AppleTV photo stream? when I reset my iPhone, I did not get all of my photos back. How do I get these photos off of my Apple TV?

    Hi MrRhea,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like you have photos in your Photo Stream that you would like to download. The photos are not actually stored on your Apple TV, it sounds like they are being displayed from your Photo Stream. Please read over the attached article for information on your Photo Stream and how to download these photos.
My Photo Stream FAQ - Apple Support
Because your Mac and PC have more storage than your iOS devices, you can choose to download all of your My Photo Stream photos automatically.
In iPhoto or Aperture preferences on your Mac, select Photos (or Photo Stream) > My Photo Stream > Automatic Import. All of your photo stream photos will import into your Events, Projects, Photos, Faces, and Places folders in iPhoto or Aperture.
On your PC with My Photo Stream on in the Control Panel, all of your photos will import intoC:\\Users\<user name>\Pictures\iCloud Photos\My Photo Stream
    Best regards,
    Joe

  • Photo orientation in Ipad

Hi I'm having problems with the photo orientation in Ipad. In my pictures, I have photos both in portraint and landscape mode. When I sync in Ipad, they are all landscape, the ones in portrait are orientated in landscape. How do I fix this. In my pc picture folder they are at the right orientation, but not in the ipad. Has anyone have this problem? and how do I fix it?

    Which OS are you using?
I believe that old versions of Windows (XP and earlier) did not understand the orientation flag that is stored in the EXIF data. Most modern cameras have orientation sensors, and the save the orientation when the photo was taken in the EXIF data for the photo (the EXIF data is metadata that is stored along with the photo data in a jpg file).
Any decent photo browser will understand the EXIF data and will display the photo properly without having to manually rotate the photo. However, if you manually rotate the photo in Windows, the photo data will be rotated, but the orientation flag will not be changed. When the photo is loaded into the iPad, it interprets the marker in the EXIF metadata and rotates the photo a second time.
I'm not sure that this is your problem, but if it is your problem, then the photo is being displayed incorrectly on the PC, and the iPad is displaying it "correctly".
If you think this might be the problem, try installing a program called irfanview on your PC. You can download it at: http://www.irfanview.com
It is a great public domain image viewer program. If you install it, try looking at your photos in irfanview and see if it also rotates your photos like the iPad does.
    Ron
p.s. I can understand how what is happening must be annoying. The photo will be displayed incorrectly, and as you instinctively rotate the iPad to fix it, it auto-rotates again leaving the photo always in the wrong orientation.
My OS is windows 7. So to fix it, I should rotate my pictures in my pc folder in landscape mode so that in the ipad it will be in portrait? As of right now in my pc folder my landscape pictures is in landscape in ipad but my portrait pictures is also in landscape in ipad. And no matter what I do, the portrait ones are always landscape. I've deleted the ipod photo cache and resynced. And no changed.

  • Wrong Photo Orientation

    Hi there.
I just upgraded to Z1 Compact and while copying new photos I noticed my vertically taken photos are shown rotated left. Looks like all photos are taken in Width>Height resolution 3840x2160. This is fine for horizontal photos of course but Vertically taken photos appear sideways on my PC. My old HTC Desire S automatically adjust photos taken vertically to correct resolution by default (in sony it should be 2160x3840 if it did it the same way) which is what common sense suggest (photo Height should be bigger than Width)
Photos appear in the way they were taken in Album and such on the phone and I basically would like to get them copied to my PC the same way. Is there a way to do it on the fly or change some options I can not find to do so? I can of course rotate them manually in my photo explorer but it will be pretty annoying woth hundreds of pictures
Please let me know if you can help me out with it, cheers, Dan.

I just copied it to a folder, dont even have to use software to view them as Explorer icons' options shows minatures. Like I said all photos are taken in the same resolution which is 3840x2160. Xperia itself adjust it to display them in proper manner but if you choose photos details from menu you can see the resolution which is one above. Vertical photo should be taken in "vertical" resolution of 2160x3840 (basically Width should be much less than Height).
Tried to get more info about this photo and with "Photos" software on my phone if you go to details you can see "Orientation" parameter set to 90 for vertical photos. So phone takes photos in one resolution it seems and then just insert its own modyfier to rotate and display these photos properly. I believe this parameter is lost when doing simple drag and drop on these photos resulting in them being not rotated.
Just my take on this, any other ideas let me know, cheers. Dan

  • Changing photo orientation

The photo orientation on the CHAPTERS THEME main page is vertical. How do I change it to horizontal?
    thank you

Unlike the books, calendars do not change the orientation of a frame depending on the orientation of the photo dropped into it.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
