Photo prints too red

I have a HP5180 All-in-one-Printer. It prints in color perfectly when I print a flyer or brochure on regular paper. However, when I go to print a photo it prints the faces, etc. bright red. I have the settings on photo paper, tried the auto fix on and off, any suggestions???

This is a 6 ink printer right? Sounds like you are low or out of Light Cyan ink.
The light cyan is used primarily for photos which is why your flyers still look ok. When you print in photo mode the printer trys to use the light cyan but if your empty everything will look a bit reddish.

    I purcahsed aHP Photosmart Permium model HPC410a about 6 months ago after my previous HP broke down.  I have to say I was quite happy with the previousd printer but this one I would not recommend to anyone.   I am stuck with it I guess till it also breaks down.
    It prints totally unrealistic pictures.  They are just far too red and it is very thirsty on ink (may be the carrtrides are too small but XL versions that fit  are not cheap.     I have tried to find a way to correct the redness it but there does not seem to be much that one can select.   I am using HP paper and the correct inks.   A face  looks as if they have been out in the sun far too long but there is a redish brown tinge right though the pricture which make is look dark.   However no mtter what monitor you look at the pricture on  eg. CRT, LCD or LED types  the pictures alwys  looK to have a good colour balance and the skin tones look like real skin.
    I have tried a number of things.
    1.  making sure the latest drivers are installed both on the windows machines and the Linux based machines
    2.  printing from a different computers usinhg the same photos.   XP & Vista, Fedora and Mint Linux,
    3. used different cameras from different manufacturers and get the same end printed result.
    4  used a different printer (was loaned one, not HP) and after loading the linuix driver worked fine out of the box so to speak.  didi not bother to try it on a windows machine.
    Therefore I conclude that the printer is set up wrong.  Using the GIMP program and adjusting the Gamma settings I can get it to look somthing like right but this is a hassle and I should not have to do it.   Is there something that one can set in the HP printer to correc this problem. 
    Has anyone any idea as to how to correct this problem?

    Hard Reset – While printer is powered ON, pull
    the power cord from the printer then from the
    wall. After 30 seconds reconnect power to
    wall and printer. This will trigger a ‘dirty power
    up’ and restore the printer to a known good
    condition (if it is possible). No user settings
    are lost with a ‘hard reset’.
    This ‘Hard Reset’ is one of the most powerful
    tools to use when the printer hardware is not
    functioning properly!
    if not resolved, While printer is powered ON, pull
    the power cord from the printer then from the
    wall. on the printer control panel press & hold Help key & Down Arrow ...while holding both keys down reconnect power to
    wall and printer. It will trigger a partial reset.
    if not fixed...printer may have a hardware failure.

  • Printing too Red - Help!

    Hi,
    I'm having a huge problem I have no idea how to fix. When I have a photo I print it looks good on the screen (iPhoto) but the skin tones print very red when using either my Epson Picturemate or my Canon MP600. I got an idea and hit print preview today and guess what,....the print preview is so much more red than the original picture. I've posted a picture here:

    Sounds like the colorsync profile isnt working. You can calibrate your screen manually in the "Displays" preference and see if that helps. This will create a new color conversion profile for your display that it will use instead of the damaged one.

    Not sure what the EW-sRGB is. What does EW stand for? There are a number of color RGB profiles but I've not seen that one. When did this start? What camera is it from and does it affect all of your photos? Is the photo you posted a scanned photo? If so what color profile does it have? If it's Adobe RGB I suggest you rescan to the sRGB profile.

    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

    I have an Envy 5532 printer. If I print from an sd card the photos print ok, copying a photo direct from the scanner also prints perfectly, but if I print from photos already stored on  my computer they have fine red lines randomly across them.

    Thank you for your reply. I have now found that my problem was in fact confused by a number of coincidences.
    I had set up the printer and run test print pages & copied from the scanner and a print from an sd card before the "stripe"  problem appeared. When I tried to print from a photo already stored on the computer was when it first really showed up. I ran the Print Doctor Tool and no problems were reported. Similarly the print test page appeared ok although of course it only has small coloured sections. Finally, after running test after test, the ink ran out and I had to put in a new cartridge - Eureka! problem disappeared.
    I therefore conclude that I had a faulty cartridge that was causing the trouble. I have since run a photo on "best quality" onto Photo Paper and it looks perfect. At the high price of cartridges, this was a costly excercise, but at leat I am now able to print my  photos which is what I bought it for.

  • Display looks great.  Prints too red/magenta

    I'm been perusing the boards, but haven't been able to find a direct answer to my problem. Using iPhoto or even Preview, my photos looks great. Good colors, contrasts, etc. However, when i print them to my Canon photo printer (with photo paper), or even my HP color printer (with normal printer), the pictures are always quite magenta-ish.
    At first i thought it was a printer problem (canon). But now that we see the same problem with the HP, i'm beginning to think otherwise. Both printers have been hooked up to a PC and printed without problems.
    Ideas and/or pointers?

    You may need to calibrate your monitor or if you aren't using the right paper for your printer that can affect it to. Photo printers are designed to have the manufacturer's paper used with them, when you stray and use paper not designed for that printer your results won't be the best. I would recommend you visit both manufacturers web sites and see the paper they recommend.
    If you do decide to calibrate your printer go to:
    System Preferences - Display - Color - Calibrate. This can be a sophisticated process that may require tools, for most people this isn't necessary. Assuming your printers are OK and you are using the manufacturers recommended supplies (ink and paper) this may be what's required.

  • Photos print too dark on Lasejet CP1515n

    I have a Laserjet CP1515n and in almost every way it works very well and very reliably. Unfortunately color photographs always print out too dark. I have not been able to find any documentation that describes how to resolve this and set up color printing for more accurate results. I have never had this problem with any HP inkjet printers, of which I have owned a number over time. This is presumably a calibration issue but I would appreciate any pointers on how to deal with this problem. Printing of documents in color is not an issue, only photographs.
    I have seen other people with other color lasers with this type of problem. I don't believe that what they have said about how to deal with this amounts to any more than experimenting with settings. Does anyone have an approved or official take on this problem or a reliable method to solve this?

    You can change how the printer interprets color.
    Go to Print->Properties->Color->Color Thems and select "Photo".
    This helps give more accurate color when you are printing only photo images.

    I've read a similar thread about this but didn't understand the suggestions.
    I'm new to cs3 indesign and have windows xp. I've prepared a newsletter with colors photos saved as pdf which are being printed for black and white newsprint. The photos come out way too dark and lightening them only washes them out. Is there a setting I'm suppose to be using when saving to pdf? If I need to change any settings for the images could you please give me step by step instructions?

    This is called dot gain. Different printing devices print dots
    differently. Some throw a bunch of ink (or toner) at the paper, while
    others are more conservative. You need to talk to your printer and
    prepare your pictures specifically for his press. Ask about color
    correction. And yes, when you're talking about color correction, black
    is a "color".
    And if you're starting with color pictures, convert them to grays first.
    You're letting the output device decide how to convert colors to grays.
    If you do it yourself, in Photoshop, you'll get a much better idea of
    what it will look like on paper.

    Washes them out onscreen, or washes them out in the final printed
    output? Work with the numbers, not what you see onscreen. Dot gain means
    that, for instance, the dots that make up a 90% black will run together
    on press, effectively printing at 100%. Dots that make up a nice 50%
    black will probably yield an effective 54%. On press, darks usually get
    darker, midtones usually get a littler darker, and very lights get
    whiter. So you compensate for that by color correcting: lightening the
    darks, lightening the midtones a little, and darkening the
    almost-whites. Different kinds of presses (and different presses,
    different papers, even different press operators) experience different
    amounts of dot gain.
    In Photoshop, you want Image > Adjustments > Curves, and the exact curve
    depends on numbers you would get from your printer. After you get a
    curve you like, you can save it as a .ACV file for that printer, using
    that print process.

  • HP z6100 Photo prints are too dark and magenta density is too high, etc...

    Hi,
    Here's the problem. I am having digital portrait photos printed at 20" by 26" in. for wall displays on an HP Z6100 designjet using universal adhesive vinyl. The test prints came back dark and with strongly pronounced magenta and red in the skin tones.  I have a few questions that I hope you can help me with:
    1. Is universal vinyl really the best print medium for this or would some photographic paper like luster or matte yield better results?
    2. I am not in control of the printing process itself, but would providing the ICC profile for the printer/paper combination make a difference in correcting this issue?
    3. The images are jpegs and the color space is sRGB. Should I convert them to CMYK for better results?
    4. Any other suggestions please.

    My 6500A prints photos far too dark - how do I get round this???? I can't find any OBVIOUS way of controlling this.

    Same problem with the same printer here.
    When I send a photo from my phone (via ePrint) the result is not as clear as I would like.
    In addition to settings for brightness, I would also like to know if it's possible to change the size of the printed photo. (if you print a photo from windows you'll get a wizzard that lets you choose from different sizes)

    I have been treading around trying to find an answer to my question.
    I´m using Epson PX720WD and Photoshop elements 10.
    When I´m printing with the correct paper settings "premium glossy photo" in elements, my prints gets too dark. If I print them on normal paper and choose "plain paper" they seem better. And they are "perfect" if I print them in easy photo print - Epsons software.
    I read that I have to calibrate my screen and all, but I edit my pictures in elements, save them and open in easy photo print they are ok. There must be a way around, that I don´t have to calibrate my screen.

    Btw, I´m completly new to this, so please don´t use too complicated words:)

  • Exported Jpeg's when sent to photo lab print too dark

    I have had consistent results with exported jpeg images that look fine on my monitor (as raw files)and show in the histogram in lightroom 2.5 as the highlights just starting to clip as printing too dark when sent to a photo lab in SRGB.  Is this a fault of my monitor?  I have calibrated the monitor, a Dell S2409W, using charts on the website at http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html but this still happens. Will darkening the Monitor help or will the images still clip at the same point?  I have been able to send a second image with the exposure and or brightness boosted a bit and they print brighter, but this is a pain.  What is the best way to correct this so that I can see the same image as I get back from the lab?

    Remember from the digital events many people print his image at home,you must deciding maybe is better to work with a professional photographer,that can given you more work.itsn't easy.you must have a good preparation because ,they are more exigent.The good results depend also from the quality of your works.a good machine,good chemical product,good upkeep,of your laboratory.(in italy this is the procedure,i think also in other country,because is a ticklish question licence.)I hope that this my little explanation are useful to you.Good luck .

  • Photos from Lightroom print too dark

    I have saved my photos in RAW format and imported them into Lightroom. I have then made changes to them and exported them from Lightroom as JPEG files. However, when I go to a printing kiosk and get the photos printed, they are all darker than what they displayed in Lightroom. What do I need to do to be able to print accepable photos?

    It really isn't that difficult to print and get good results. But the key is to make sure the monitor is set properly. Those who are really into printing strongly advocate using a hardware monitor calibration device. I agree, but haven't invested in one. Over the years I have worked with the controls on my monitor and software tools to match the monitor to my printer. And having done so I have found that images that I send to a lab match very well, too.
    Since you have never printed before, or are just getting started, you really need to take time to get that monitor adjusted to match the results you are getting. Photolabs are pretty consistent. And if your images are too dark you must at the very least reduce the brightness of your monitor. Color matching can be a whole additional challenge. If you want to print, whether on your own printer or through a lab, getting your monitor set up properly is critical.

  • Photo is printing too dark

    I am printing from Lightroom 4 to to an Epson Artisan 1430.  I'm using a generic glossy paper.  I have the print settings set to this, along with best photo and have the print management in Lightroom set to printer.  I have tried printing 3 images now from a batch of photos.  They all appear under exposed.  I'm printing a 6x6 photo.  When I print it as a 2x2 the exposure is better.  I then chose another photo that was shot in .raw format in a much higher quality just to see if it was the photo set before or the possibly a setting.  The single photo printed out de-saturated which leads me to believe I'm missing a setting somewhere.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to look for?

    This is not a known issue with any Adobe products.
    But Epson has had a lot of problems with their drivers in MacOS 10.9.

  • Blue shade on photo prints

    I am an amateur photographer and was very pleased with the photo prints of my HP officejet 6500 wifi.
    However, after replacing HP blue and magenta ink units, recently (old ones were empty), the following problem occurs:
    I have a blue haze on area's where it should be black/dark, mostly shade area's of a picture.
    Dark brown, black, dark red, etc. all have a bluish haze and miss the original deep dark tone.
    A light grey shade on a white picture turns into a bluish shade in stead of grey.
    White remains white, and other colors seem correct too, though.
    Initially it looks like a wrong white balance, but it is not.
    Checked this on several monitors, and different PC's and prints at a photo service.
    I print on HP photo paper (premium and everyday glossy).
    I use Photoshop Elements 10.
    I bought new HP ink cartridges again, but the problem remains.
    I tried to figure out many settings, maybe I did something wrong, but could not find anything wrong.
    I tried to bypass the problem for urgent prints by strongly reducing blue with Photoshop Elements 10, then blue disappears in real blue sections, but the blue haze problem remains.
    Bottom line is that I cannot use my HP printer now for printing photographs, but need to for regular presentations at a photographer community where I participate.
    Who can advise me what to do, what to change, where to adjust .... ?
