Photo problems between iphoto and Canon Digital Photo Professional

Hey people,
So I've copied all my photos from my SD card and iphoto asked if I wanted to import them so I said yes. I've put them in folders, albums etc and have since installed my Canon software for its editing programme but cannot seem to open my photos in it.
The folder 'iphoto' in the finder or 'all images' aren't available when browsing in the Canon programme, and I cannot drag and drop them into it from the all images folder. The only way I've found to open them in the Canon programme is to copy them and put them into a new folder and having 2 copies of the same photo.
Is there a way of being able to access the photos in both programmes, such as creating a single shared folder with the photos in and then setting them both to have access to it?
Any help would be great!
Will

Applologies, I have since discovered the 'export' function in the file menu, so I've solved my problem.

  • Can anyone help with workflow problem between iPhoto and Photoshop CS4?

I am very new to CS4 Extended, having upgraded from Elements 6 recently. I use iPhoto '08 to do all my photo organization and really enjoy it, have a LOT of work invested in it and don't really want to switch to anything else if I can help it. One aspect I like about it is that it tucks away my original in case I ever need to revert. With Elements, I could set my iPhoto preferences to allow all my editing to be done externally using Elements 6, but it would only allow 4 photos to be sent over to Elements at a time. Then I would have to go back to iPhoto and "get" more. I thought that when I upgraded to CS4, I would at least be allowed four at a time to be sent from iPhoto to Photoshop for editing. Whenever I do this, it sends only one, maybe two, but never four. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. I'm annoyed at having to constantly go back for one or two photos at a time to edit and wondered if anyone knew of a workaround for this problem. The reason I have done it this way all along is that the two programs would work together and update my iPhoto pics and thumbnails automatically. Since then, I have just opened the iPhoto files from within CS4, but the edit doesn't update the thumbnails, only the enlarged versions within iPhoto. Neither Apple nor Adobe has been able to offer any solutions. I am not looking to create multiple copies of my files. I download straight from my camera to iPhoto. I could always just download them to a folder, edit them in CS4 and then import them into iPhoto, but that would necessitate making a copy of the photos to keep the originals safe and I'm not sure I want to have to organize all my originals elsewhere on top of my iPhoto library. I am very open to suggestions!
    Thanks!

I appreciate your response. I recently did a reinstall, hoping it might help. It didn't seem to make any difference. Don't know if I need to just switch to a different program like Lightroom or just do all my editing outside of iPhoto and then import the results, but that defeats the purpose of letting iPhoto handle my originals so easily. I really like iPhoto and what it does, and have spent a lot of time getting my library compiled just the way I like with keywords, ratings and so on, and I'm afraid that switching to a new product will lose a lot of that work and either cause me to split my library into two places or to create unnecessary duplicates.

  • I just updated my iPhoto to the most recent version along with updating to OS lion.  I had transferred all of my photos to my iPhoto and turned on photo stream so I could view them on my iPad.  when I tried to open my iPhoto today it would not allow me to

It keeps saying that i need to choose a library to open.  When i look for a library I find the iphoto in my pictures folder but it shows up as a folder not as a  iphoto icon.  How can I get it to use that library again?

It sounds like that Library is damaged. Restore from your back up is the simple surefire solution.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
First, empty the Trash, if possible.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) 2>&- | wc -l | pbcopy
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be a number. It's automatically copied to the Clipboard. Please paste it into a reply.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

  • I made a photo book in iPhoto and would like to transfer the book to my iPhoto on other macs and iPad.   How is this done and can it be synced between devices like photo stream.

I made a photo book in iPhoto and would like to transfer the book to my iPhoto on other macs and iPad.   How is this done and can it be synced between devices like photo stream?

You can create a Quicktime movie slideshow of the book's pages and share that. Here's how to get your book into an iPhoto slideshow and then export as a Quicktime video:
1 - While viewing the book type Command+P to start the print process.
2  - click on the PDF button and select "Save PDF to iPhoto".
Note:  If you don't have any of those options go to Toad's Cellar and download these two files:
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Unzip the files and place in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder and reboot.
3 - select either of the files above (300 dip is used for photos to be included in a book that will be ordered).
4 - in the window that comes up enter an album name or select an existing album and hit the Continue button.
That will create a 200 or 300 dpi jpeg file of the item being printed and import it into iPhoto. Immediately select all of the photos in the new album and sequentially renumber them as "Page  " using the Batch Change ➙ Title to Text with the option to add a sequential number to each title.  This is to let you put the pages back in the correct order in the event they get sorted incorrectly.
Now you can proceed as follows: create the slideshow in iPhoto and export it out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large (480p with iPhoto 9),
    Happy New Year

  • Difference between iPhoto and Aperture and photo storage

I'm thinking about upgrading from iPhoto to Aperture but I'm a little confused about the differences in the way photo edits are handled. The iPhoto to Aperture page says that Aperture stores photo changes in one photo rather than duplicating them, therefore taking up less space. BUT they also use a unified shared library. So how is it possible for Aperture to handle edits differently if the library is now shared between the two applications?

Aperture may save you some space if you choose not to generate previews, but then you won't be able to integrate with other apps.
As Terence Devlin says. But being able to manage the Previews is quite a space saver. In Aperture you can selectively generate previews only for the photos that you want to share with other applications, and you can specify the size and quality of the previews you want. iPhoto on the other hand will always create previews for all photos, and all in very high quality. In Aperture I delete previews for redundant photos and keep the previews only for my highest ratest photos that I am likely to share with other applications and want to use as a screensaver or slideshow.
If you share your photo library between Aperture and iPhoto and edit a photo in iPhoto, then iPhoto will add a preview for this photo, even if you disabled previews in Aperture.

  • Missing photos in both iPhoto and Aperture

I recently upgraded to Aperture 3.1.2 and transferred all my photos from iPhoto 8.1.2. In total I transferred about 15000 photos from my iPhoto library. I noticed some photos were missing in Aperture. After opening iPhoto again, some photos were missing there (although the thumbnail was present). I tried restoring my iPhoto library but that did not restore the photos. I BELIEVE between iPhoto and Aperture I have all my photos but I can't be entirely sure. Does anyone have anyone out there have any ideas of what I can try? I already rebuilt my iPhoto library and that just helped identify what photos I am missing in iPhoto.

This definitely sounds like and iPhoto and/or backup problem.
How was the backup done? If it was with TM (or another incremental backup program) did you check an earlier backup?
If you restored the iPhoto library from backup and the images were still missing I'm afraid there isn't much that you can do.

  • How do I go about with Canon Digital Photo Professional installing?

When I bought my Canon 40D two years ago, I got a cd "Canon Digital Photo Professional 3.3."
I use that on my windows based computer for manipulation. Now..
I wish to install this software in my Mac Book Air. Since I have Aperture 2.1.4 on this MBA, Do I have to choose any particular directory for this Canon DPP install.
Will Canon DPP work along side the Aperture or work as a plug in for Aperture?

    Hi snowshine,
when you launch the DPP installer it will create automatically a folder named Canon Utility in the Application folder...mine did so, I didn't changed the default settings.
After installing DPP from the CD be sure to go to the Canon website and install the upgrade, there are several available, along with Picture Style Editor and a new version of the EOS Utility.
DPP and Aperture are two distinct applications, they can live together, no problem...I have installed DPP and Aperture 2.1.4 on my powerbook G4, DPP and Aperture 3 on both iMac and macbookpro..and everything's fine.
DPP will not act as an Aperture plug-in...but you can set DPP to be the external editor for Aperture if you need so, you can set the external editor program by going in the Aperture Preferences.
    Ciao!

  • IPhoto and Flickr - disappearing photos and involuntary syncing

After control-clicking on Check Now in one of my Flickr albums, within iPhoto of course, all of the pictures in the album disappeared, leaving only the name of the album in the list of Flickr albums in iPhoto.
The set made from that album is still present on the Flickr website (so far), even after navigating away from the page and coming back. I have no idea what is going on.
I assumed that Check Now would sync any changes I made to photos in that Flickr set back to the same photos on iPhoto.
I am worried that Flickr is now going to delete all of those photos entirely from iPhoto (as well as from the Flickr site). That would be a big problem. It hasn't done that so far, but who knows? I understand that the syncing between iPhoto and Flickr is two way - i.e. true syncing.
When your changes in Flickr sync back to iPhoto, does Flickr change your original in iPhoto (or whatever is serving as your original for Flickr's purposes - that is, the most recently modified version in iPhoto), or is there a separate version created just for uploading to Flickr, that is stored in the Flickr album on iPhoto, and that is the only version that is changed by Flickr when it is syncing back (to iPhoto)? I hope it is the latter. If not, many of us may be in for a surprise.
Should I delete the empty Flickr album from iPhoto, which should have the effect of deleting that set and its photos from the Flickr website, and start all over? This was a big, long upload, which is why I am hesitating.
I just started using Flickr yesterday and have had some trouble with it - for example, I've deleted albums/sets and re-uploaded them, for various reasons. Perhaps I've confused the poor thing.
I have Flickr Pro, if that makes a difference.
    Confused.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
The Flickr tool in iPhoto is both pretty neat and pretty frustrating. While I think it is a good start, it still needs work. I probably can not answer most of your questions, but I can clarify a few and offer my own experiences...
The set made from that album is still present on the Flickr website (so far), even after navigating away from the page and coming back. I have no idea what is going on.
That is weird. So the Flickr set in iPhoto cleared itself but the actual set on Flickr is still intact, right? Have you tried restarting your computer, going to disk utility and repairing disk permissions on your start up drive, then restarting iPhoto?
If that doesn't clear it up, you might try rebuilding the iPhoto library by closing iPhoto then restarting while holding down the Option key. Then try some of the rebuild options and see where that gets you.
I assumed that Check Now would sync any changes I made to photos in that Flickr set back to the same photos on iPhoto.
The syncing is two ways, but the Flickr sync back to iPhoto is more limited. For example, if you add keywords in Flickr those keywords will be synced back to iPhoto. However if you add a photo from your flickr account into that album, Flickr will send a small version thumbnail back to iPhoto, not the original photo.
But yes, to answer your question, all syncing between iPhoto and Flickr is more or less a two way sync.
I am worried that Flickr is now going to delete all of those photos entirely from iPhoto (as well as from the Flickr site). That would be a big problem. It hasn't done that so far, but who knows? I understand that the syncing between iPhoto and Flickr is two way - i.e. true syncing.
First off, Flickr can never remove anything from your iPhoto library. Perhaps a photo might be removed from a flickr album in your iPhoto, but the photo will still exist in your library. So you can not lose anything from your library using Flickr.
Second, if the Flickr album in your iPhoto is empty but the photos are still in the album in Flickr, then they will not be removed later. The sync tends to be a real time event where if you remove photos from an iPhoto Flickr album, iPhoto then begins to remove them from Flickr as well.
My own experience is that sometimes things happen like you experienced, where the iPhoto Flickr album gets "disconnected" from the on-line Flickr album. At this point there is no longer a connection and one doesn't effect the other. I have not found a way to relink the two which is one of the weak points of the new iPhoto Flickr syncing.
As a side note, a nice feature would be a menu item to actually do that, disconnect iPhoto from an on-line album, as it would be nice to be able to upload an album, then disconnect it so no further changes are made to Flickr regardless of what happens to the iPhoto album. Basically a "do not update" setting.
To the best of my knowledge, Flickr does not sync back actual changes to the photo itself. It will sync back things like album name changes, title changes, keyword additions, and stuff like that. However I have never actually tried publishing an album to Flick then editing a photo in that album in Flickr to see what it does. I should try that to see. Generally, if I have used iPhoto to publish photos to Flickr, then I use iPhoto to make any edits to the photo, not Flickr.
Should I delete the empty Flickr album from iPhoto, which should have the effect of deleting that set and its photos from the Flickr website, and start all over? This was a big, long upload, which is why I am hesitating.
As I mentioned above, if the album in iPhoto is empty but everything is still intact on Flickr, then likely the album in iPhoto was "disconnected" (link lost) from the Flickr album. When you go into that album in iPhoto, does it still show a Flickr link in the upper left? If so, what happens when you click that link? Does it take you to the album?
I just started using Flickr yesterday and have had some trouble with it - for example, I've deleted albums/sets and re-uploaded them, for various reasons. Perhaps I've confused the poor thing.
Flickr is pretty good. It is the iPhoto to Flickr interface and syncing that is a bit weak. It sounds like your issues are with iPhoto's syncing with Flickr than with anything to do with Flickr itself.
I myself use a number of tools with Flickr and I find iPhoto doesn't offer many choices on how it works with Flickr. Actually it doesn't really offer any choices, you get one method of interaction and that is it. So for many tasks I use other tools to get photos onto Flickr.
That said, if you have a full album/event you want to put on Flickr, the iPhoto interface is very handy for publishing a set on Flickr with keywords, map data, etc. and allows you to edit photos later and have those updates automatically go to Flickr as well. But with that comes some problems like being able to edit a photo in iPhoto for a different purpose, perhaps forgetting you added it to a Flickr album since you are accessing the photo elsewhere in iPhoto than that Flickr set, and then having those edits updated to Flickr without you realizing or intending.

More info about my question - there is an emanating wave or broadcast signal icon beside each Flickr album name in the iPhoto source menu. It looks a bit like the Airport signal icon along the top bar of the computer screen. When you click on it, the sync symbol appears and goes round and round for awhile. So that is how you manually sync Flickr albums and sets I guess.
Yes, even if you just click on the set to look at it in iPhoto, you will usually see the little "broadcast" icon indicate it is checking the set against the Flickr set. Usually you see one of several icons. The little broadcast icon like the airport signal simply indicates that the set is synced to a Flickr set but is currently idle. When you click that icon or the set, the icon changes to a circle. A couple of swirling arrows in the circle indicates it is checking online. If there are updates then the circle goes blank and you start to see an advancing pie piece indicating how much of the sync is complete. If the circle just sits there blank for a long time, then the sync has stalled or not working.
One album has the symbol, and two don't. These are the two I had trouble with today (deleting and re-uploading, etc.)
The album that has the symbol also has a link at the top of the photos to the page on Flickr containing that photo set.
The two albums that don't have the symbol do not display a link to the appropriate Flickr page. The corresponding sets are both visible on Flickr, however, as I said.
Perhaps I should start all over?
Ah, ok that answers the question I asked above. Sounds like the two albums somehow got de-linked from Flickr. Both sets show up on the left side under the Flickr listings?
If that is the case, you have a couple of options.
One is if you are satisfied with the set as it appears over in Flickr and don't really have a need to keep a live link between the two (Flickr and iPhoto) you can probably delete those sets from our of iPhoto's "Flickr" albums and your Flickr sets will stay.
On the other hand, if you wish to keep a live link to the two albums so you can continue to edit or update the album, keywords, photos, etc. then you probably want to redo those two.
Unfortunately as I said above, I don't know how to get an album to RE-link back to Flickr once that link has been broken and where it has happened to me I either have removed the set from iPhoto, removed the set and all photos from Flickr (using the Flickr web site tools), then recreating the set in iPhoto and clicking the Flickr upload button again to recreate the whole thing. Or I leave the set on Flickr and continue to work with it directly at Flickr using other tools to add additional photos and doing all my edits on the set or the photos from the Flickr website itself.
    Regards,
    Patrick
